I wanted to like this game - the music in the trailer is amazing, the setting is a rarely seen one, and the characters seemed unique.

Unfortunately, the in-game music is less remarkable, the dialogue is railroaded so tightly that the characters feel one-dimensional instead of complex, and the branching story paths feel completely arbitrary - it seems at least half of them require you to unceremoniously ditch your passenger. Also, even if you've seen a cutscene before, you can't skip it, or even speed it up - this makes unintentional trips down the same story path boring and frustrating, and there's no real way to tell which turns will and won't uncover new content.

All of that could be forgiven if the gameplay were fun, but... it just isn't. The collision geometries will often have you colliding with invisible hitboxes, the "autopilot" doesn't work well enough for you to rely on it, and the frequently obscured road means you will often rear-end unseen traffic.

The car's velocity occupies the distinct territory of "too fast to stay in the right lane, too slow to pass in the oncoming lane reliably," and there are no brakes. You can stop for passengers, but the controls don't give you any way to slow the car. So if you have three cars in front of you in the right lane and three cars coming at you in the left lane, you're either going to rear-end the car in front of you or sideswipe multiple cars while lane-sharing.

The result is a buggy, unsatisfying game that seems to fail at everything it sets out to do. The setting is interesting, to be sure, but I feel that exploring it isn't worth sinking several hours into such frustrating gameplay.

That's something I think about as well. I try to read over my reviews every one or two years but I know that's not very often.

If I find someone that has reviewed something negative and it's highly ranked I try to point out to them if the game has changed, especially if it's a lesser known title. Sometimes they rereview, other times they get upset.

I always feel uneasy about thumbs-down reviews that lots of people found helpful because I've seen cases where thumbs-down reviews complain about problems that have been patched out.

It's reassuring to know that the problems I described are still present.

I got this game on Epic Store through the weekly giveaways and had the same thoughts. I was glad that I didn't buy it.

constantcompile is right. Achievements don't show on a users profile to others if said user doesn't own the game anymore (such as a refund). Steam implemented that a couple years ago along with the "steam is learning about this game" thing.

Huh? That's odd.

I had the achievements for ending A, C and D, plus the <15 minute playthrough and one other.

Could be that Steam invalidates the achievements if you get a refund.

Let me just say that your review is perfectly valid as well. I'm sure I would enjoy the game more if I had the historical context that you seem to have. As someone without that knowledge, however, the game's weaknesses outweigh its strengths.

But did you play game actually, because all achievements are locked on your profile for Wheels of Aurelia?
I can't complain about said things in review, drawbacks you mentioned are real...but how you manage to skip achievements?
