Simple controls (left, right, and jump). Your ship requires the sun to run and you're racing against your dwindling power due to the setting sun (hence the name of the game). This is a high speed and unforgiving action game. Obstacles stand in your way, which include things to dodge or jump through. Minimal buffs along the way keep your ship running, your jumps available, and allow you more speed (like we needed that).

It's fun unless you're easily irritated at having to start over each time. For that reason, understand this is a video game in the style of old school arcade machines, except there are no quarters to keep you proceeding forward in the race. Just your excellence at ship control.

In many ways, Caravan is The Oregon Trail game from Apple IIe days. You play as a caravan leader, thrust into the role after your village is destroyed by a mysterious sand storm. Play consists of plotting which trade route you'll take to a camp, village, or city. At these points you can trade goods, upgrade skills, or pick up quests. Questing (hell, just travelling) offers many opportunities for random events. These include ambushes, animal attacks, beggars, people in need, stray livestock, ghouls, and even genies. Plenty more event types abound.

Conflict is resolved as a dice game. I say conflict because it covers actual combat as well as haggling (remember this is a trading game too). I'll allow the game to explain exactly how it works, but it involves taking turns to pick up shared dice to boost stats. At the end of dice placement, damage is handed out. Luck and strategy both exist in these rolls. Its possible that you'd also be using a character that has skills that allow him to cheat in this part of the game.

There is a story, with obvious choke points on the map. Until that choke point is tackled, you're free to roam through the desert, trading and xping. You can also level a party of other merchants, rogues, and mercenaries. Each of these are allowed their own horses, camels, or auxillary support characters. In addition, there are artifacts to fine tune all of these characters. These options and overall game direction make Caravan extremely fun to play. Its a very relaxing game, although the music does get repetitive (thank you Spotify).

One of the only things I didn't like was how slow it took your caravan to get up and move to the next point. The animation is slow and drags on when you leave -and- enter a location. Since you travel often, this time feels longer and longer the more you play. Be nice to have an option to turn off that animation. Other than that, Caravan is a decent purchase at the $10 price point. If you've played The Oregon Trail and enjoyed that kind of game, you'll like Caravan. It's kept my interest.

Windward is a very basic ship combat game with a pirate overlay. Archipelago style island chain maps are randomly generated in sizes that range from duel-size to medium-large. There are several factions that you can ally yourself with, which give your ship additional bonuses (such as gold storage, speed, damage, trade capabilities, etc). Once you've figured out which faction you're down with, you can get right into action.

The first thing that you'll notice is that there's no "get out of your ship" mode. You are the ship. Dock in ports and buy/sell trade goods which can be sold for profit (or loss) at other ports, depending on need. Movement is very basic: forward, stop, left, and right. You can drop anchor for a quick stop move and should you need to engage in combat, you'll be doing damage from the left and right sides of your ship. You'll run across supplies floating in the ocean randomly as well as after taking down an enemy ship.

In single player mode, you fight AI pirate ships, but in online mode, you can play against other players. Combat is arcade style, with the primary objective to always be T-boning shots onto the enemy ships while avoiding getting T-boned yourself. I'm referring to cannon fire, but you can also ram ships for damage as well.

Progression is about upgrading your ship (better ships, sails, hull, cannons, etc) while also offering captain skills that can affect your ship as well as your abilities.

This feels like a fun, mindless game when you just want to listen to some Pirates of the Carribean style music and take your mind off things and wreck havoc on the high seas.

Armello is a board game with a fantasy theme that you can play solo or online multiplayer. You play in a kingdom of animated furry forest critters. There are bipedal wolves, bears, foxes, field mice, etc. The king is actually a hulking lion. The game board you play on is made up of hexagonal tiles (reminiscent of Catan). At the center of the board is the palace, which houses a slowly dying king. The king loses one health per turn due to a magical rot that's taking over the countryside. It is your goal to take back the throne from him, as he tends to be doing bad things lately. Things like summoning demonic purplescent hellhawks to terrorize his populace. Or, ordering his Royal Guard to attack the townfolk. Not only is this bad, but its also a direction you can assist with when the king looks for advice from the player who has the most prestige points. These are earned by casting spells or killing other players.

When you enter the game board, you can do a few things. You can cap settlements that pay you gold every day as well as earn you a prestige point when you take it over. You can visit stone circles to help you regain lost health back. You can hit up your local dungeon for a quick loot run. Or you can cast spells and/or attack other players.

Cast spells comes in the form of card draws that you can make each turn. Cards come in three varieties: Items, Spells, and Trickery. Items are cards that you can play to go directly into your inventory. These cards help you out directly in combat (which is a dice game similar to Risk in some ways). Spell cards can be cast outside of combat and can do things such as direct damage or teleport you across the map. You can also cast a type of booby trap curse on tiles to mess with other players when they enter the zone. And then there are Trickery cards. These allow you to directly mess with other players (think Blue deck powers in Magic the Gathering).

Attacking is the other option. Attacking happens by rolling a number of dice equal to your attack power. Modifiers apply, such as terrain bonus, ambush status, as well as day/night bonuses. If you beat your opponents blocking, your surplus dice hit his health.. and vice versa. You can trade deaths in this game. Which is really not that bad, since you get to respawn as a fresh scrub in your animal army. Remember, it's a board game.

There's also a corrupt magic element to the game, that affects not just the king, but your avatar as well. Corruption plays a major part in combat scenarios with other players by adding a cheatery dice rule to the mix. I've used it to my advantage a few times as many as its been used against me. So while it sucks when it's my bane, it's fun to smash my opponent.

Games are relatively short (20-30 minutes) and the game ends when someone has dethroned the king (i.e. sword to the gut) or when the Rot overwhelms him and he succumbs, leaving the highest prestiged fuzzy in charge. Due to the randomized nature of the board and player setup, and add to that the quick gameplay, and the game has some nice replayability. I can see myself coming back to this for a quick game in between chores my wife likes to give me on day's off. Seems about the right amount of time.

Garry's mod is simply a physics sandbox that allows creators to build worlds that games and roleplaying can take place in. Think of it like a digital switchboard connecting you to thousands of weird gamescapes. I've played Garry's mod before and found myself enjoying the chaotic humor of the player interactions more than any game that was ever designed for it. Things are clunky (which is part of the charm) and downright silly most of the time. Garry's mod is a good change of pace title, when you're bored and need something to do.

It is what it is.

Killing Floor 2 is a high-paced wave combat game with a heavy dose of blood and guts. The story is thin, but the game takes place in Europe after a zed outbreak happens due to a company named Horzine Biotech. You are a part of a group of citizens and soldiers who fight to reclaim their world.

Matches are a pre-determined length when setting up the game, but can be up to 10 rounds. Each round gets progressively harder and increases in size as well. In between rounds, the dosh (or credits) you earn can be spent at a vending machine for more armor, ammo, and weapons. Weight is a consideration during this phase, so you need to pick what you want. Can't carry it all.

Gameplay consists of maps with several levels in height. They're usually dark and large though. Players can use flashlights if they like, but many play without them. Hordes of baddies are mostly easily dispatched, but as the levels progress, harder enemies join their ranks. These require focused teamwork to take down, since most of these type have a particularly nasty weapon that can wipe a group if left unchecked. At the end of the match, there is a boss fight. These are designed to be killed a certain way, so teamwork is again a necessity to win. Or, have an overpowered individual in the party to carry you.

Gun action is fun and satisfying. The explosions are a treat as well. At times, you'll experience bullet time, which is really fun for placing a lot of head shots. Different characters have different main and secondary attacks, which makes the game even funner. Running feels a little sluggish for some reason, but outside of that, the characters move nicely in the world.

Overall, this is one of the games we like to go to as a group. With buddies, its the best. The player following is relatively positive though, so even if you don't have people you know to play with, the pick-up groups are usually pretty good. Enjoy.

This version of Gauntlet is mostly true to the feeling of the series. The skeleton is all there. Several classes to pick from in a top-down dungeon crawler that focuses on a twin-stick style shooting mechanic. Power ups and treasure await. Despite being all there, it doesn't have exactly the same magic as some of the series earlier titles.

All in all though, it is a fun title and has a decent co-op mode in it. I have only one gripe with the co-op mode. If everyone doesn't stay together, the screen stretches to include everyone up to a point. If someone gets stuck in a hallway off to the side, the entire group has to figure out how to backtrack the camera to unlock them. Annoying. It would have been far better for everyone to have their own screen when playing online.

That aside, the gameplay is fast and fun. The fun factor is multiplied when playing with friends. Minus the above issue, Gauntlet is a fun arcade style game for friends. If you aren't sure if you'd like it, watch a few videos of the play style.

Dead by Daylight is a one-vs-four game of cat and mouse. One player takes on the role of the killer, while the rest play survivors. The goal of the survivors is to.. well, survive and do so buy stealthing around the map trying to find generators to fix to power the escape door. Survivors cannot be offensive in any way. Each survivor has a character-based talent (such as being able to not groan in pain or recovering from a jump landing faster than normal). In addition, items can be found and used to thwart the killer's efforts. These kinds of things include flashlights to shine in the killer's face or tools that can disassemble the large meathook assemblies the killer uses to hang you while he hunts for others.

And the killer.. you guessed it.. is there to toy with and ultimately end the lives of each of the survivors. As a killer, there are many different types to pick from. This is one of the really neat things about this game. Killers can be a twisted hillbilly, a mentally unstable electro-shock therapist, or even favorites from movies (such as Michale Myers from Halloween or Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street). Each one has their own "weapon". Some use chainsaws, some their claws, while others slash away. Each has their own powers that are unique and unknown to the group until the killer reveals his or herself.

Gameplay is tense no matter which side you choose. Obviously moreso for the survivors. Running causes a trail the killer can see, as does bleeding. If you miss your skill check while fixing a generator, a loud noise can be heard and the killer is alerted visually as well. Run by any birds in trees and they'll squawk and fly away. The killer receives all manner of clues as to your presence if you're not being careful. However, the killer is only afforded first person view, while the survivors get the more cheatery third person view.

Graphically, the game is mediocre. Character design is very basic on the survivor side. The killers are molded in a similar manner. Thematically, the killers have a wide variety to pick from. Characters move decently well across the map, with only minor issues with navigating around structures, windows, and ledges. Character animations are sufficient, but could use some work as well. When it comes to the killer/survivor interactions, such as combat, the game plays satisfactory. If there's any department that could use an overhaul, it would be in its graphics.

The music and sound in the game is top notch though. Both add a fantastically intense experience. Survivors experience a panicked heartbeat noise as their killer draws closer and any time a skill check is failed, the noise of the generator exploding or a first aid roll that turns into someone yelping in pain.. these are the things that make you cringe while playing.

Progression in the game is done through a dark web of abilities that you purchase with points earned from the game. Each role is awarded these. Points for survivors are earned by saving other players, disabling meathooks, as well as foiling the killer directly amongst others. Killers are granted XP for stalking their prey, hooking survivors, and using their powers effectively. As you uncover the nodes on the web, eventually it will fill to the point of earning a new character level. Perks as well as consumable one-level perks can be earned in this way.

Overall, Dead by Daylight is a lot of fun if you have the nerve for it. It can be very intense at first and end in a horrible way for you. But that's part of the fun. As it appeals to a variety of types of players, the killer vs survivors angle is fun for all.

Deep Rock Galactic is a fun, action/mining game set in space within distant planets. The object is to land, find specific ores or items, load them up on your mechanical mule, and blast back to your mother ship where beer, dancing, and kicking barrels around takes up your free time. Sort of a Minecraft/Terrarria idea mixed with periodic wave combat events.

There are four classes to play: Gunner (specializing in the best weapons), Scout (best for mobility and keeping things lit up), Driller (being the best for quickly boring out tunnels), and Engineer (who can build sentry guns). Each class has a primary weapon, a sidearm, and class-specific tool. For example, the Gunner can also shoot zip lines to cross large canyons. Every dwarf gets a mining pick, which can be used for melee as well. The pick is what most of the mining is done with and it can even be used to carve out tunnels or stairs to reach higher ledges. The blocks are similar to voxel-based mining, such as what can be seen in 7 Days to Die.

No matter who you pick, you have a finite number of resources and ammunition, so they must be used wisely. You can resupply, but must find resources in the cave walls to dig up to activate these drops. Periodically, the swarm of alien bugs will attack you and your team.

These action scenarios are great fun. As the underground is.. well, dark. Part of each players' responsibility is to help illuminate things by tossing flares. These are one of the things that recharge, but in the middle of a fight, it can be hard to do this as well as navigate your fire. Friendly fire is a thing too, so watch where you're shooting. If one of your buddies goes down, you can revive by hightailing over to them and helping them up.

Once you've collected all of the resources that are required for you to leave, you can either finish the bonus collection quest or leave back to the ship. At this point, XP and credits are awarded. There are also perks to be earned by completing milestones. These are things like, "complete 5 quests in crystalline caverns". You'll get a few points to spend on your progression tree to further toughen up your dwarf. Players may also spend their credits on upgrading their armor and even vanity items. This is all done with in-game credits.

My friends and I have all spent a lot few hours now enjoying this game. The action is fast and chaotic. The darkness adds a fun element to the fights, as does the surroundings themselves. Some caverns are icy, while others are bio-organic. Every cave is randomly generated to boot, making each excursion a mystery. It's a great cooperative game that relies on everyone communicating and helping each other out to win. The development team continues to release updates regularly and takes feedback from their player base very serious. This is a solid co-op game that plays fast and makes you want to keep playing.

If you're looking for a light-hearted Halloween game, Haunt the House: Terrortown fits the bill. You are a ghost. The object of the game is to scare all the people away using your possession power. Littered through all of the cartoony levels are hundreds of objects for you to animate. Do this at the right time and you'll spook nearby humans. As you grow in your supernatural power, you'll unlock more "terrifying" object possession powers. The ultimate goal being to clear the zone.

The game has a polished, soft look. Nothing in the game is actually scary and the game controls are pretty simple to understand, which makes this a great game for kids. The music feels like what you'd hear in an old saloon, which has its own charm. I wouldn't say there is a ton of extra gameplay after you beat the game, unless you like to achievement hunt. In that case, you'll want to possess every object and reach max spook power on each level for the biggest bang for your cheevo-hunting desires.

This is a fun game for me to play with my kids. They love it.
