While the game isn't incredibly difficult to beat on normal difficulty (took me barely over 5 hours), it was incredibly fun. In fact, it's one of the best Wild West shooters I've ever played. The missions are composed of an on-the-rails adventure that you must walk through, clearing popular Western backdrops of throngs of bad guys and ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Then the game breaks down into a boss or showdown mode, in which your focus, hand placement for your pistol, and draw/aim speed all comes into play. The music is what you'd expect out of a spaghetti western and many of cinema's favorite tropes are lovingly found in the game. The narrative is also special, as it's a tale being told around a poker table and subject to interpretation. The narrator's voice is spot on for the character and mood of the adventure, and often funny. A similar narrative experience would the game Bastion. Finishing the game in 5 hours got me roughly a third of the way through the achievements, so there is more cheevo hunting replay value for those who like to hunt such things. In addition, there are 10 arcade modes that I've just begun to start playing through. These rely on more run'n'gun style play.. which is fine by me. The action and controls are great, so it's fun to come back to levels previously run through. Overall, this is a really fun game which doesn't take too long to beat, but beckons one back for the fun of blasting the black hats. Recommended.

A better title for this game would have been: "All There is is Fight"

Super bizarre. And I'd challenge the description's setting of "punk fantasy world". Fantasy world yes. Punk? Not so sure about that. To be more accurate, this game looks and plays like a bad LSD trip. I wonder how many mushrooms were a part of the development cost of this game?

One of the darkest and most entertaining roleplaying games I've played in a long time. Darkest Dungeon's setting is a hamlet that has fallen on dark times. A manor built upon a hill overlooking the land is your adventuring jumpoff point. Your party consists of four characters that you may choose from by recruiting heros to your adventuring party. These range from plague doctors to vestals to occultists. The setting is dark.

As the game begins, you quickly realize that the game is rogue. If your characters die, they stay dead. In fact, you can go visit dead characters in the hamlet's graveyard. If they live, well your bound for improving their abilities. Abilities come in two forms: combat and camping. Combat are exactly what they sound like, the offensive and defensive abilties used when actively in combat. The camping abilities are an interesting tertiary set of skills. On medium and larger dungeons, you can camp to regain health and other traits through rest (assuming you have enough food).

Other things that matter in the game.. light for one. You must carry enough torches. If not, the world starts to dim. Things get tougher, while also yielding higher rewards. Some abilities are tied to the light as well. So are some curses. Along the way, the game generates treasure and curio stops for you to either interact with or not. Items in your inventory serve as critical lifesavers when your characters abilities are not available.

As you loot the dungeons, you purchase town upgrades with the heirlooms you find. And in all of this, you do not save. The game saves your progress forward, but mistakes are permanent.

I am enjoying this game immensely.

***UPDATED REVIEW 2/9/15***

15 hours in and I've learned to deal with loss. Repeatedly. First boss battle I lost one of my best Crusaders. I winced. Second boss wiped my entire party. Then my friend showed me the retreat button. Not sure if it would have worked though.. as I found out later, retreating doesn't always function properly (circumstances depending).

The stress features in the game are some of the most enjoyable aspects. It makes the game laughably tough at times while also being hilarious in game at other times. For example, my Plague Doctor reached her breaking point at which time her 'mettle was tested'. She could have gone either way - a good OR a bad trait. It was bad however. She developed selfishness. This meant that she was constantly chiding the group on if they were doing too much damage that might show her up. She would complain about her backpack chafing her and ask for someone else to carry it, stopping the party. But the worst.. I looted an armoire with 1100 gold and a jade, but instead she jumped in and took the goods. It was her payment for services rendered.

So yeah, the game is fun like that.

Still 11/10

***UPDATED REVIEW 3/2/15***

37 hours in and I've learned to deal with mental illness. My town seems to be working like a darkly oiled machine. I'm also learning to deal with repetition as the game is providing new enemies for me to kill, but the play is essentially the same.

Still fun, but adjusting to the reality of what it is.

***UPDATED REVIEW 1/19/16***

I shelved this game for a bit and have returned upon its full release. The changes to the game have been substantial and I'm glad to say that they've all been for the better. A few of the changes:

- Corpses were added a while ago, but have changed the manner in which attacking/death-dealing works. Now, when you slay an enemy, they fall to the ground and become an obstacle to reach enemies further back in the line. Previously, when the enemy died, they disappeared and the enemy line shuffled forward. Now, there is an added strategy to removing meat bags on the ground.

- Several new classes were introduced into the game, giving more variety. The Hound Master (added in the Corpse & Hound update), the Man-at-Arms and Arbalest (which were added in the Friends & Frenzy patch), and the Abomination (added in the Inhuman Bondage update). To say the least, the game has become more robust.

- Also added were heart attacks. Like the game wasn't dire enough? (evil grin). Stress now plays an even more critical role in the game. If your characters' stress bars fill up once and then "prestige" a second time, your character can die from a heart attack.

- New areas were added (as expected though, as this was an "under construction" area from the beginning).

- And achievements have been added. *One note on the cheevos - I had to start a new game to unlock some of them.. they didn't credit me for all of the ones that I had previously already done.. some, but not all. This is okay though, as its fun to play the game fresh and some of them look to be challenging to complete (For example, it's easier to play the game without the corpses option turned on, but there's an achievement for beating the game with the feature on).

- There have been some new monster additions as well: The Madman (who shouts stressful words to the party, found in all areas), The Collector (miniboss), as well as the new bosses from the F&F update.

- The town has more upgradeable sections to it now.

- New trinkets, modified trinkets, and the ability to sell them for much needed gold (this becomes handy if you wipe on a run and lose more gold than anticipated. You still need to ensure you have enough to provision your next embarkment).

The new additions are welcome! This has been a great Early Access project that I'm happy to have seen completed in time and with some great additions to the game. I cannot recommend this game enough. It has great replay value and is one of my favorite games on Steam. Great concept, great development, and thoroughly engaging.

Together makes this game complete. As a standalone single-player experience, the game is just fine. Albeit, somewhat lonely. DST just adds the ability for others to join you on your adventures in the murkily-drawn world. If you liked Don't Starve, best part is that you get this for free while in Early Access. If you're thinking about picking it up, it's hard to say that you might not like it. It's a really fun game.

At its core, it's a rogue survival game dressed up in gothic cuteness. You need to manage to find and/or prepare food for consumption. You also need to manage your fear of things, as well as stimulate your mind. Unusual survival metrics to be sure, but interesting nonetheless. You collect all your goods during the day, possibly crafting armor, weapons, machinery, or defenses for your base(s) - then you survive the night. The night is when most of the playable characters start getting scared. The more frightened you are, the more you pierce the veil of reality.. into the nightmare realm.

If you get too scared or darkness envelops you, the demon gets you.

Simple conceptually and with enough interesting uniqueness to keep me playing. Perhaps the best bit is the randomly drawn world each time you play (ala Diablo 1 dungeon system). The inclusion of rare NPC's and areas - as well as the ability to tweak every element of what actually appears in the game world - makes this a great value at any price. The fact that it comes in at indy pricing makes this sweet.

Safe to buy at full tilt. Enjoy.

Having logged 8 hours into the game, I can tell you that I cannot begin to give a full review of this game at this point. So, take this for what it is: a first impression of the game. Here is my list of pros and cons as I see it so far:

+ Graphics were not ground-breaking, but possessed of a nice amount of detail (found myself looking at the art frequently)
+ Music was really beautiful, ambient sounds (with one exception below)
+ The world feels huge. There is a lot to explore and get lost in.
+ Questing feels more organic, less WoW.
+ Creative things you think up to solve a problem, sometimes work. For instance, I shot a fire arrow into an explosive barrel to blow some guys up. Boom! Now everything is on fire. I could shoot the water barrel over there to put out the fire, or charge it with my melee specialist, or cast a rain spell to put out the flames. Many roads to success.
+ You play with two main characters in the story, but can define both of their classes. This lends itself to a lot of class combinations.
+ The game has classes that are not typical in every RPG. Witches, Enchanters, Battlemages were a few of the uncommon varieties.

+/- The game feels like an old-school RPG, which I give a +. Others may not like this style of game (more text, party micro-management, and elements of hardish turn-based combat)
+/- Physical appearances in character creation are very limited. Not a big deal for me. But might be to others.
+/- The game has co-op, which I thought would be pretty awesome. You don't see that often in a straight-up RPG. Ever maybe? However, the game doesn't play with a fast pace, so my co-op excursion felt disjointed and sort of wrong. My friend was off looking through chests and got into a fight with some guards, while I was embroiled in conversation with a talking shellfish. If both players are in the mood to roleplay play, the game might work better in co-op. Not sure how I feel about this feature.

- Cameras got caught up on foreground stuff, which necessitates a mouse-scrolling move. No big. But when the camera switches to another NPC, it resets, making you have to zoom in again. This might be fixable in a menu option, but I was not able to find it.
- There are some glitchy areas of the game that cause unusual graphic effects on screen as well as a odd pathing problems in some areas that look clear.
- Some (not many) NPCs need to have their audio repeat function disabled. Some fights were annoying to listen to.

All in all, I give this game a 8/10. It has me wanting to come back for more.. lots more. It is very fun. I'll post a more detailed review after I've logged at least 40 hours.

This game's true rating lays somewhere in the 6-7/10 range. Since Steam only allows for a thumbs up or down though, it is more up than down.

Things I enjoyed:

The humor and writing is mostly on par with BL2 and as such, the story feels fairly consistent. So much so that it seems like it would have been better to tell the story in the proper order to begin with instead of doing a prequel. I digress. There are still plenty of guns to obtain in the game, following in the footsteps of BL2 as well; each with their own signature handlings and trappings. The overall size of the game is about the size of BL2 also, perhaps a touch on the smaller side - hard to tell. Music is again, very close to the other game. All in all, it feels like a continuation of the first or the reverse, depending on how you look at it.

What I didn't enjoy:

The game was released with too many bugs. The game crashes periodically, usually always in co-op. The settings re-default at times and there are plenty of clipping issues and holes to fall through in the game world. Some of the voice acting is weak. I'm not referring to accents. The game is done by 2K Australia and one would expect Aussie accents - it actually goes quite well with the genre. And the ending. I wont give anything away, but it is highly anti-climactic as you know who lives entering into the game. And the "to be continued" feeling it ends with is sort of lame as the reason we all bought this title is because we've already played BL2 to death - we get it. We know it concludes in something that's already come out. I can't help it though. It sort of bugs me.

Should you buy it?

If you love the series, yes. Diehards wont mind paying $60 for it. Casual BL fans should wait for a 33% off sale. It feels right at $40 for those people. If you've never experienced the series before, I would say to wait altogether. At least until you've played the BL2 adventure. It's the best of the series so far.

I haven't played the latest Sim City, but I've played all the rest. This is by far, my most favorite version. This gives you all the features that you expect out of a Sim city builder game. You zone land for the three basic types in your city: residential, commercial, and industrial. Each of the three zones has three subcategories. For example, you can pick an agricultural zone for industrial or medium density, which will allow small shops and factories. Same goes for the other core zones. Placement of services is critical in the city. Police stations, fire stations, and hospital proximity to things is all important. But your sims want more than just the essentials. They want soccer fields, plazas, playgrounds, and tennis courts as well. Again, where these units are placed is critical. Each thing you make costs a build amount and a monthly upkeep, so thought must go into it. As does how much road you have and of what type. You can eventually add rail, boats, planes, and a myriad of other additions to the pulse of the city.

I have a few gripes with the game though (all minor). One, the camera controls could be smoother. Two, WASD should be the primary camera control instead of the arrow keys (the game shows its age here). And three, I wish the game had more organic choices for laying roads and placement of zones. All things snap to the grid and diaganol roads have a funny bend to them. These have nothing to do with the enjoyment of the game though.

Sim City is a relaxed, leisurely game to play.

This is an old school dungeon crawler. Think Gauntlet graphically scaled down. You can play solo or co-op as one of several classic classes: Paladin, Thief, Mage, Warlock, or Ranger. Each character has a primary melee or missile attack and then a second attack that costs mana. Mana regens, health does not. Well, unless you find apples in the game (or if you enable HP Regen as a crutch in the menu). Crutches make the game easier and subtract from your score. The mission? Find a way around a broken bridge to get back to your friends.

Gameplay is a series of wave battles that are stumbled upon in the maze. Once you've cleared an area though, it stays clear. This is good because sprinkled throughout the dungeon are vendors (funny place to do business). They are the source of upgrading your character into a deadlier machine of.. death.

This is a much funner game with a buddy, but it's also a rogue game, meaning that you have a finite amount of life and must find more ankhs in the game if you want to keep swinging a sword from beyond the grave. Once the ankhs are gone, they're gone. That makes the game all the more fun.

Hammerwatch is cheap. You should get it.

I became a fan of Saints Row when I played the third installment. The second was decent, but suffers from some choppy movement. Saints Row the Third was the pinnacle of this series. The thing that made it great was the unrelenting humor and solid gameplay. It was a blast to play.

Saints Row IV loses all of the charm.

Keith David was a major draw to this game for me. But there's a particular event in IV's story that dropped my interest right out of the story. It's a story element 100%. And I don't want to spoil it for anyone else, but let's just say that it affects how much I care about the world. Even despite the fact that much of the game is tongue-in-cheek.

Fun title with a very robust crafting system. Almost everything in the game is lootable or can be broken down into a resource. As a voxel game, the world can be dismantled and reduced or added to. Soil, stone, clay, sand - are all materials of the earth, including many ores to mine for. You can craft wood, brick, and stone structures and building materials, but like the components of the ground, everything has a physical property. My friend and I found this out the hard way when a tunnel collapsed on us that we were digging.

The zombies are a fun addition to the game. I started on the easiest setting (there are 5) and they were little more than slightly-mobile shooting range targets. We bumped it up to the next setting and the shamblers began to run at night time (they still shamble in the daylight). Setting 3 made night time a horrific experience, with even faster zombies and endless hordes of them. Yeesh..

We're in the middle of creating a zombie-proof base. It's a very addictive title now at this point. I look forward to revisiting my server and continuing the struggle.
