from what I can tell looking at "Ascension Unlocker"s code, it should set all characters to ascension 20 when the game is launched

Rather, it doesn't conflict directly.
My experience was that I download a new character mod -> go to the new modded character -> and there is no option for Ascension, so I can't go to Ascension 20.

I played the character -> beat the run -> I was able to go to Ascension 1... it was normal, as if I didn't have the "Ascension Unlocker" mod at all.

Launched the game with the mod and didn't go further than the main menu, then quit and disabled the mod. Next time I started the game (with the mod disabled), the Silent, Defect, and Watcher were locked, as though I hadn't completed any runs with base game characters. However, I still have ascension and all unlocks for the Ironclad... either way, looks like using this mod did something weird to my savegames.
