I like the ability to switch between 4 characters, I like how each character has their own gun, special move, and ultimate. Each can also equip an accessory. I like the music. The characters constantly yapping didn't bother me, but then I only played 90 minutes. They did finally fix the mouse controls and it felt fine; guess they didn't learn their lesson from their previous releases.

I hate how to level up your characters you have to rescue them again, which given the amount of characters I imagine isn't going to happen very often for the ones you want. I hate how armor earned after the mission only applies to the characters you brought with you. Considering you are constantly getting new characters and swapping them out, and you know you're not going to stick with any of them long term until the end game and hardest difficulties, it feels frustrating and like a waste. Shooting bugs isn't as satisfying as the other EDFs.

I could perhaps have forgiven these, but the game loves to stutter at various points including when you use an ultimate. Very annoying. First EDF game I didn't like, refunded. Buy EDF5 instead.

A very fun and underrated arpg gem! Even not on sale it's worth the small price if you're a fan of arpgs.

Postive
+4 classes with each class having 4 different skill trees plus a separately leveled mastery tree (max level 100, seemingly infinite mastery level). This allows for multiple completely different builds of each character. I normally play a sword and shield as my first character, but ended up going a fire magic build that infinitely stacks Burning Conviction!
+The ability to enchant and enhance the stats of your items is a lot of fun and adds more variety to builds. It's a nice convenience factor instead of being forced to grind endlessly for the item you want with the perfect stats. Speaking of convenience...
+This game has the most in-depth and customizable UI and game system I've seen in an arpg. You can adjust all kinds of things to your liking and to make the game more convenient. My favorite is being able to make the game auto pickup what items you want (via a customizable loot filter) instead of you having to pick them up individually. More time annihilating stuff, less time stopping. You can also adjust the size and opacity of the map overlay, customize how big the damage numbers are, how big the healthbars are or even remove them if you want, and much more. You can even make custom keybinds for each character and the game automatically swaps to it when you change characters! You can also bind skill slots to the same bind and simply hold that bind for easier skill spam.
+You can fully respec your character at any time and for free when you are at the home base. Perfect for trying new builds and making adjustments.

Neutral
-+You only have 6 skill slots including default attack (4 slots for potions/scrolls/relics). This is likely for balance reasons, but still. You get used to it though, and it forces you to make hard choices about the skills you want.
-+The endgame isn't very fleshed out and basically just consists of random maps with random enemies. However on the dev's roadmap are more endgame modes later this year, and I'll update this sometime when that comes out.
-+In order to effectively do the endgame you need to figure out or look up a build that will allow you to do billions of damage. This may not be intuitive for players new to the genre. However, playing the game normally by the seat of your pants is perfectly fine for the story mode even on its hardest difficulty.

Negative
-I'm not a fan of how quickly you stop caring about enchanted and rare items, and move to only looking for uniques and up. This happens within hours, whereas most arpgs are balanced that this doesn't happen for a long time.
-In the endgame maps random events that can occur during the story do not occur. There are no random portals to challenge dungeons, no mysterious vendor, and no crystal puzzles. You can't even use the challenge portal scrolls in the endgame maps. Why these aren't there baffles me and makes the endgame maps less interesting.

I cannot recommend this game mainly because of the constant split second stuttering. It stutters when you load new parts of a map (then doesn't stutter again while merely walking) and it stutters sometimes when you fight enemies. I've tried all recommendations on the forums including turning on vsynch in nvidia control panel. Nothing works. This is my primary reason for not recommending it because otherwise I could overlook the other flaws, perhaps.
EDIT 7-12-21: The latest patch, Season 13, has fixed the majority of stuttering. It still happens but not nearly as often or as bad.

Another huge flaw is that this game has the worst inventory management of an arpg I've ever seen. Even the original Diablo, which was the template for all arpgs afterwards because it works, is far superior. You don't have an overall view of your items, instead you must select helm to see all your helmets. Then you must use W or S to scroll the items, and it has a very baffling comparison window. Clicking the item brings up detailed information which you must then manually X out of. Why did they have to change what works?

Something else of note is the extremely small and uninteresting skill tree. Yes each character has a unique skill tree, but they are small and there's no real room for varying builds or different styles of play.

Everything else I saw, which was just the first screen then the town map because most of my time was spent trying everything to fix the stuttering, the game seemed ok. I like how enemies explode on death.

If you're looking for a pixel arpg, check our Chronicon instead. It too is made with Game Maker 2 except it has no stutter problems. While Chronicon only currently has 4 characters, you can play those characters in several different and unique ways with bigger and more interesting skill trees.

If you're still interested in Hero Siege buy only the base game for a little over a dollar on sale, and see if it stutters for you. Then maybe consider getting some of the dlc.

They had to relicense the right to use Dante from the Devil May Cry™ series hence why it costs money. The Chronicle Pack is free and does the exact same thing, it just features Raidou instead. Everything is the same including the battles, the chase sequence in the Labyrinth of Amala, and the move set. So $10 for what is essentially a skin of Raidou (who was the original) and some changed dialogue, does make it a bit over priced. However Dante is pretty awesome in this (so is Raidou and his cool cat). Buy this at full price (or via the deluxe edition) only if you're a super fan, Otherwise wait for a sale and until then stick with Chronicle.

Not worth it at the full price of $8. All it does is change the music while in the vortex world (overworld) and the music of the battles that take place there, which is a tiny part of the game. You only get 4 options besides keeping it at default: SMT I, SMT II, SMT IV, SMT IV Apocalypse. I do like the Apocalypse music a lot more than the default music for this part of the game, but such a tiny thing isn't worth the price. Don't bother unless it drops to a buck or two at most, or you get it via the deluxe edition as I did.

Good [cheat] maps for experienced players who have already beaten the game in the past and want to reduce grind time. However it's extremely easy to abuse and get yourself a super high level early in the game making the game easy. I recommend you beat the game first, or save it for the very end game just before the final boss to make grinding out the 100% compendium easier. If you can't resist using what are essentially cheats then don't buy this.

I hate rhythm games but this soundtrack is fantastic. Fortunately you don't need to own the game to buy the soundtrack! People are saying some songs are missing which is a shame. Maybe they couldn't get the rights to include them in a separately sold soundtrack?

SMT: Nocturne is one my favorite game of all time. I've been waiting for an HD release for many years now, and I hardly dared hope to see it also come to Steam. It's almost hard to believe but here we are now!

What I really enjoy about this game is the feel of the turn based combat animations accompanied by the sounds, as well as the music. The press turn system is also so much fun where landing crits or weakness attacks grant you an extra turn, and nullifying attacks takes turns away. Combined with nearly 200 different demons and it never gets old. Furthermore you can fuse 2-3 demons together to make an entirely new one that can inherit a certain number of skills from the ones used in fusion. This allows you to create a wonderful variety of demons with almost whatever skills you desire. The MC can also learn his own skills from magatamas. Sadly once you forget a skill the MC can never learn it again. Demons you can always re-fuse.

Note: Do not select "new game"! Instead select new game chronicle (Raidou) or new game maniax (Dante, but only if you bought the dlc), both of which add awesome extra content.

The good
+80 hours or more of gameplay, especially if you seek to fill the demon roster and complete the Amala Labyrinth.
+Extremely fun combat with a huge variety of demons and skills all in 3D!
+The music (and sound effects) are completely outstanding and memorable. Almost 2 decades later and I still enjoy listening to the battle themes.
+New to this release is the ability to choose what skills your demons inherit. Gone is the tedium of redoing the rng fusion results screen for hours to get the perfect skill set! However if that is still your thing, randomized inheritence, they made that easier for you by allowing you to randomize it with the press of a single button instead of having to exit then reenter the menus.
+The enhanced graphics are outstanding and way better than what you could do in an emulator with upscaled graphics.
+For the first time ever English speakers get to experience the side story of Raidou! Previously we only had Dante, who is awesome yes. Now we can choose which we want upon starting a new game.
+The ability to suspend save while in the middle of a dungeon is really awesome. Look for the "continue" option on the main menu, don't use the "load" option! Some of the later dungeons it can be an hour or more before you reach your next save point, and that's even if you know where you're going, so being able to suspend save is huge quality of life update.
+The various buffs and debuffs are lots of fun to use! They're also essential to beating the game.
+The English voice over was a lot better than I was expecting and actually increases immersion.
+The keyboard and mouse controls are fully customizeable and are a lot better than I thought they would be. If you don't have a controller then it is perfectly viable and fluid-feeling to use kb+m. It's still recommended to use a controller, though.

Neutral
+-Although there are different endings depending on your response to certain questions given by npcs, called your Reason, they are short and boring. The only interesting and fun ending is the True Demon Ending where you complete the Amala Labyrinth. The labyrinth is huge with a bunch of fun bosses, and completing it unlocks the true final boss, content missing otherwise. Outside of achievement hunting for getting the different Reason endings, I suggest on every playhtrough you go for TDE because it's just much more fun.
+-Dungeons quickly become near impossible mazes. Planning your route using cheat maps is very fun; spending untold hours blundering into teleport traps trying to figure out where to go as you are constantly placed into random battles sucks and is tedious. Unless you're a major masochist don't play this game without using maps and enemy guides.
+-Sadly the game is capped at 30fps just like the original. Probably a coding limitation, but still. Fortunately it still looks and plays fine at 30fps; this isn't a shooter after all.

The bad
-The game is brutally unfair. If the MC dies it's game over; your demons can't revive you even the ones capable of using items. You could get hit with an instant death spell, or just simply get unlucky with enemy crits and you've just lost an hour's worth of progress. It's so hard that you can, and I have, die in the tutorial on hard mode. Because of this they made a new difficulty, primarily for journalists, called merciful difficulty. Real gamers won't use it, though. Despite the famously brutal difficulty the game is a lot of fun and you feel amazing when you get past a difficult fight.
-Magic got the short end of the stick. As your level goes up the effectiveness of magic damage goes down. Conversely strength based damage gets more powerful as you level. Magic is still useful for landing weakness attacks and getting you half a press turn. The stat itself is very self sufficient though, being the primary governor of magic damage, magic accuracy, and mp.
-Luck sucks in this game. Contrary to practically all other games luck does NOT help with crit chance or item drop rate. Don't invest in luck until you're getting close to wanting to open the luck doors in the Amala Labyrinth.
-Demon negotiation is completely random. I've tested using save states on an emulator. Regardless of which personality question you choose the demon will react the same way I've found, and what works or doesn't in one encounter probably won't in another even with the same demon. Just say yes to everything (unless they want an expensive item) and hope for the best. The only choice that makes a difference is when you're given the choice of acquiescing to the demon's request or declining. Assuming you want to recruit the demon, sometimes saying yes will cause them to leave, but reload the save state on an emulator and saying no will progress to a new question and give you another chance to recruit. Sometimes the demon is not recruitable no matter the negotiation path. But there are certain skills you and your demons can learn which makes negotiations in certain situations easier (or harder in others), but that's it.
-For some reason they are still using compressed music. Is it so hard to simply port over the uncompressed music from the OST?

Regarding the price I feel it's totally worth it. The only ones who have the right to complain are the ones where the international pricing is way out of proportion. If the price is comparatively reasonable where you live then I feel this game is worth it.

Fun concept, however you've got a resource you must carefully manage the whole game: your health. Screw up with health management in the first half of the game, and it becomes impossible to beat when you're expected to tank certain damage to continue. This is what happened to me and I played as carefully as I could. I avoided what enemies I could, and made sure to always get the first hit. Then I got to Rule 6, did everything I could, and found I didn't have the health to tank the boss and continue. I'm not starting all over.

The game would have been so much better if it was redesigned to be linear with each Rule (level) giving you a set amount of health. Mess up and can't beat it? Simply restart the Rule. Of course this means you can't backtrack.

If the idea of being almost certainly forced to restart the game halfway through to better optimize early gameplay sounds fun, and the style of game sounds fun, then check this out.

I didn't realize going into this game that you were punished for taking your time and being thorough. As you play, the difficulty is constantly getting harder. Go slow and soon the items and levels you acquire won't be enough to outmatch the ever increasing difficulty and you will eventually find yourself overwhelmed, even on easy.

It's a shame because I like everything else about this game. If you like being rushed into completing stages as quick as possible then this game might be for you.
