The best way to 'experience' Fallout

I discovered Fallout 3 back in my PS3 days and it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time, at least until Skyrim came along ;) In the mean time I've played modern versions such as Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 and although these are all good games there's nothing like experiencing the atmosphere of Fallout 3.

But first... what is Fallout?

The Fallout series tells the story of people who managed to survive a nucleair attack and their live in the following apocalyptic wasteland. Before the war a company called Vault-Tec had build dozens of underground shelters, called vaults, which were advertised as the perfect way to keep people safe from the blast and its lethal radiation. However... what the company hasn't told anyone is that each vault was actually a psychological and/or biological experiment. An experiment from which you couldn't back down.

For example... what would happen if you were to take a group of humans and force them every year to pick one of them who would then be put to death? What would happen if you were to take a group of humans and expose them to a high pitched sound 24 hours a day? What would happen if you allowed some controlled doses of radiation to get into the vault? What would happen if you were to put one man in a vault which contained only women? What would happen if you'd do this the other way around? What would happen if you were to try and combine human DNA with plant based DNA and expose that to radiation? What would happen if you were to freeze a bunch of humans for a few hundred years?

Think of some bizarre situation and there's a good chance that the Vault-Tec company have tried to set this up.

Vault 101

Fortunately for us Vault 101, which is the main vault within the Fallout 3 game, was less radical; its main restriction was that the door would remain shut "until further notice", a task which would be enforced by the overseer. So basically you'd get born, live and die in the vault. Which is exactly how this game starts: your birth. Which is why I think this is still, even in 2020, the perfect game to begin exploring the Fallout series and get a true feel of its unique atmosphere.

See... there is a problem. No one can leave the vault but all of a sudden your father has done just that. Which enraged the overseer and now he and his henchman are coming after you. The only way you're going to get out of here is if you follow in your fathers footsteps and leave the only home you've known for over 16 years....

Oh the atmosphere....

Curse you DLC! ;)

The first time I stepped out of vault 101 was in a game without any DLC and as a result... I was all alone. The only thing I managed to pick up with my pip-boy was some kind of weird radio station but that was it and that was all. I was alone, in a seemingly endless wasteland.

That experience gets ruined by the DLC. The moment you step out of vault 101 you'll be bombared by tons of strange radio signals which all appeal to you to go investigate. In other words... guess the wasteland isn't as lonely as it seems.

But even with all the DLC (which is honestly quite good stuff, it really helps to enhance the game) this is still one heck of an experience... alone, pretty much helpless (armed with a pistol which is running out of ammo and a baseball bat) and you got no clue where to go next. Welcome to Fallout :)

Spoiler alert: you're not alone ;) Far from it.

Summing up....

This game is in my opinion a true classic. If you're going to play again then the introduction sequence (the "growing up" part) may get tedious over time but everything else.. timeless. In my opinion this is still one of the best ways to learn all about the Fallout series.

Thanks for reading!

Fun for young & old!

Scribblenauts is a Nintendo classic which eventually got released for the PC platform and is now even available on Steam (this kind of surprised me when I found out)! Although the game is definitely intended for youngsters it can also be plenty of fun for grownups as well, but just keep in mind that you could grow a little tired with some of the repetitiveness.

What is Scribblenauts?

It's an open world sandbox game in which you play the role of Maxwell; a boy who has a magical notebook in which he can write down something he'd like to have or likes to happen. By doing so he can control the world around him! For example... if Maxwell is hungry he could grab his notebook, write down "apple" and whoosh!: an apple will appear. If he's really hungry he could also use an adjacent: "big apple" and now he'll get a bigger apple.

Maxwell has been a little naughty and to undo the mistakes he made he's going to visit the whole world to try and help people with their problems. From a little girl who's cat is stuck in a tree right down to a doctor who needs help treating incoming patients in a hospital. So you'll meet people who are having problems and then you need to use your notebook to try and solve those problems. And honestly... some problems can be pretty tricky, even for grownups!

What makes this so much fun is the fact that many problems usually have many solutions. The kitty stuck in a tree? You could give him wings so that he can fly, or you could give yourself wings so that you can fly. Or just give yourself or the girl flying powers. Of course, we all know that the real solution here is to use dynamite or a good ole' fashioned flamethrower! ;)

Object editor!

The game also has an object editor which you can use to modify existing objects or create new ones yourself! A deer with a rabbit head? No problem, you can make all sorts of crazy things. And as one could expect: there's full integration with the Steam workshop so feel free to share your inventions with others as well!

More than just objects!

Once you have made an object you can also control how it should behave, almost anything can be scripted and added. For example... a burning sword which can make you fly? Not a problem! A ring of invisibility? Also not an issue. Your imagination is pretty much the limit here.

In conclusion....

Don't expect too much from Scribblenauts, in the end it's still a game meant to be played by youngsters. But as I said before: even grownups can have some fun here. It's simply relaxing (and fun) to visit different parts of the world and discover all sorts of crazy things going on. An Italian chef trying to bake a motorcycle? Yeah, that's Scribblenauts for ya ;)

Definitely 2 thumbs up, I highly recommend this title.

Nice read outside the game

This DLC basically gives you a PDF which roughly goes over the story as it's played out in the game itself. I actually enjoyed this better than the full game (no offense intended) simply because it left a lot more open to your own imagination. Which I think helped the story a bit more.

Next to the (brief!) story you'll also get to see several pictures which have been used in the game. Which is where a fair warning is in order: I strongly suggest you only read this after you've finished the game, otherwise you'll have a few spoilers to deal with which can ruin some of the surprises.

But yeah, I think this is a good addition to the game and it can help relive some of the moments from within the game.

Cool & honest artwork

Although I didn't really enjoy the game I was definitely pleased with some of the used artwork. There is some really good stuff in here and some of the pictures in-game can truly set a good atmosphere.

Well, now you can enjoy some of those outside the game using this DLC. The reason I'm calling this honest is because the preview on the store page shows you exactly what you're going to get: 9 anime pictures. And if you want to know what I meant with atmosphere: take a close look at the city overview, it's one of my favorites. That's what I call setting up a good atmosphere.

In conclusion...

Solely looking at the artwork and the price of the DLC I think this is a solid buy and a welcome addition to the game. Like I said above (and in the review of the actual game): I may not have enjoyed the game all too much, but I was quite pleased with the artwork, some of it is simply plain out good. Which makes this a good buy I think.

Silly but fun!

The idea is simple: an anime girl has to go from one station to the other and in between she'll come across several crates of different sizes which she'll need to pick up and carry with her. Not much more to do for now.

It's silly but I think the idea behind the game is fun.

But beware: the fun may be over sooner than you'll expect it... level 2 is plain out frustrating, in my opinion too frustrating. You basically have to push a barrel up a hill but if you make 1 small mistake then chances are high the barrel will pass you and roll all the way down again. Get ready to do it all over again.

Yah, that's bad gameplay in my opinion; requiring a player to basically restart an entire level after 10 minutes worth of playing simply because they made 1 small mistake? That's just frustrating and only hurts your motivation.

The only reason I still recommend this game is because I think it has potential; it is an early access game afterall so theoretically some things can change in the future (though I wouldn't bet on it) and well; it's cheap.

Fun but not accurate

This game gives you access to cardfights from all the Yu-Gi-Oh TV series, so basically ranges from the original series featuring things like 'Duelist Kingdom' and 'Battle City' right up to more modern stuff such as GX, 5D and Zexal. The thing is: I used to watch a lot of the original series when I was a kid, I even own (and still sometimes play) the (DOS) games that got released "back in the day": the Yu-Gi-Oh "Power of Chaos" series.

So consider me completely surprised when I was re-playing the original duel between Yugi & Kayba and noticed dozens of cards which plain out didn't exist back then! Even though I clearly told the game to use authentic decks for that era. Errr. yah, not good if you're a fan of the series.

Bland interface

The interface is decent, the playing field is easy to navigate and you can always check up on the effects each card has, so far so good. But it also looks plain out bland in comparison to all the special effects you got to see in the series. Sure, when you draw a special card (like Dark Magician for example) it will show a brief animation, that's fun, but nothing really happens on the playfield itself: it only shows a ton of numbers and that's basically it.

See, the original "Power of Chaos" series would actually added some special effects; when Yugi (or Joey or Kayba) would take damage you'd see a small cutscene showing how they didn't really enjoy that. When you drew a special card for the character (Dark Magician for Yugi, Black Eyes for Joey & (of course): the Blue Eyes white dragon for Kayba) they'd also show you a small cutscene in which the character starts boasting about how they were going to summon their "ultimate trump card". Yah, there's nothing like that in this game. A crude CG animation is the best you get, and that's it. After that it's all back to showing numbers again.

In conclusion...

The game isn't bad, I also have no intention of requesting a refund, but it's still not something I can recommend. If you claim to provide some Yu-Gi-Oh history and then 'forget' to provide all the right cards from that era then that's plain out sloppy and thus doesn't live up to the expectations.

Because you deserve the attention!

Ever had this feeling that your Steam friends are ignoring you? Playing the latest and hottest Steam games yet no one bothered to ask you something about it? Then forget about Triple-H errr: A games and get this title instead!

I'll tell you: the moment you're playing this you'll have your friends wondering in no time "wtf you're playing this time?!". Success!

If you could stop Hitler....

Of course you would ;) So while on your way to stop the Fuhrer from doing his evil deeds you suddenly discover that he is actually a she, and better yet: she is kinda interested in you. This is the perfect opportunity to distract Ms. Hitler from invading Poland and by doing so saving the entire world!

Together with her trusted sidekick Helga the cute Fuhrer is ready for the missions ahead. Just too bad that you'll soon convince her into a three-some before building the base on the moon which was bound to guarantee victory.

Should I love this or hate it?!

I don't know anymore... As much as I appreciate "Cute Anime Girls" (the developer) I also have to admit that I can't help wonder if they're not pushing the envelope a bit too much here. Why this sudden fascination for Hitler in order to sell more candy crush games?

On the other hand I also think this game has some really fun (but maybe kinda bad) humor and well.. who am I to say something is right or wrong?

In conclusion....

Seduce Ms. Hitler, stop her from invading Poland and save the world. You'll be well paid! errr... wait... if you stop Hitler from becoming a major influence on the world, and you're the only one traveling back in time, then why would your contractors pay you for a job that doesn't need to be done anymore?

Errr, yah... I liked it more when we got a mandatory maid which made our (cute) catgirl jealous.

TO buy or not to buy... if you can take some dark humor and the attention of all your friends then this is a good title. And hopefully you'll still have some friends left by the time you finish this game ;)

ok, ok.. 'nough bad puns. This is an interesting title but I am not too sure about this whole WW2 fascination. Having said that I do think the humor is good (though defo dark) and yah... it's candy crush. I can appreciate this.

Better than I thought...

My first Fallout game was Fallout 3 on the PS3 and I loved it; I spend weeks exploring the wasteland and gathering resources and doing all sorts of quests. The next title, Fallout New Vegas, was also something I heavily enjoyed because it managed to really enhance the story.

And then we got Fallout 4 which implemented some very different mechanics... For example, the main character now has a voice and actually talks to others. This may sound like something very casual but up until now all Fallout titles had a silent protagonist. So from a gaming point of view... this was pretty deep.

Next was a change in V.A.T.S., the so called Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System which allows you to freeze your game and carefully target specific parts of your enemies. In previous titles this would fully pause your game so that you had plenty of time to decide your attack strategy but in Fallout 4 the game is merely slowed down.

Up until now I really didn't like the thought of these changes but now that I'm playing Fallout 4 myself I have to admit that it's not as bad as I imagined it would be.

The plot and gameplay is a bit shallow...

When I stepped out of vault 101 (Fallout 3) it was an amazing experience; here I was.. all alone in a desolate wasteland. Without friends, without anyone else around (so it seemed) and all I knew was that my father had left shortly before me. So my only real choice was to find him.

In Fallout 4 though... not so much. You end up in cryostasis and at some point in time you briefly wake up and see your partner in life getting murdered and your son getting kidnapped. You go back to sleep and when you eventually wake up you'll soon learn that you've been gone for over 200 years. So here's my problem... for all we know we could have seen the kidnap shortly after we went to sleep, say after 30 - 50 years. This means that it could have easily been 150+ years since our son was kidnapped. Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on staying alive while putting your son on the famous todo list? You don't even know if he's still alive, but what you can be sure about is that he should not be your primary focus, and yet he is....

And well.... although I definitely got excited when I got my hands on power armor + minigun so early on in the game it also left me unsatisfied. I mean... "wham" and I had power armor just like that. In Fallout 3 I managed to steal power armor from someone roaming around Vault 101 early in the game, only to learn that I couldn't operate it. That's right: you had to learn this first.

So I stored it and continued playing and only after my endeavours in the Citadel was I finally able to actually use it. Sure, that was a lot more difficult, but also so much more satisfying than "wow, you're new! Here, have some powerarmor!". It was fun, it was exciting and that sound and feel when I jumped off the roof... Awesome! But it wasn't as satisfying as it could have been.

People only eat carrots?

Disclaimer: I'm still very early in the game so I can't be sure that I didn't miss something here.

But yah... So I started a settlement with people and I learned that they need food. Apparently the only way to provide this is by building a structure that will help them. Ok... so why is the only food generating structure something you plant with a carrot? Why can't I, for example, put down a fridge or storage unit and then fill that with spoils from my adventures which can then be shared with the settlers? It doesn't seem to work this way and that seems weird... Even Minecraft allows you to use several different types of food...

Modding ftw!

I'm a big fan of the Nexus mods website and I plain out love their Vortex mod manager. In fact: this is one of the main reasons I decided to pick up on Fallout 4 because I've already seen lots of cool Fallout 4 mods on Youtube. So even if the game would completely disappoint me (which it didn't!) I'd still be able to have plenty of fun using mods.

Well, they didn't disappoint. Although I normally wouldn't recommend modding a game before you played it in its vanilla form I kinda ignored this entirely and loaded up several mods to enhance my gameplay and so far I am not disappointed. Some work even even better than Skyrim because there are no multiple game versions here...

In conclusion....

Two thumbs up. This game is very good and provides you with plenty of fun, it truly is a more modern Fallout which still pays proper respect for the franchise as a whole. Although I would strongly suggest to wait for a Steam sale (that's how I got my copy) I also think the normal price is fair.

If you enjoyed Fallout 3 & NV then.... maybe it's time to cast aside your prejudice and at least give this a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed and even if you are; don't underestimate what the modding community has managed to build.

From the makers of Girl and Goblin (which is a personal favorite of mine) and Fantasy girl now comes a new puzzle game: Tentacle girl...

The puzzling continues....

Normally I'm not very anxious to buy hentai puzzle games because let's be honest.. we know the drill right? The developer creates a 'framework' (= the software which allows you to do the puzzling) and then all they have to do is sell you the same framework over and over again but simply with a different name and different pictures, done!

Now, although this also somewhat applies to the 'Inverse game' developer you can clearly see that they're still doing their best to provide us with a little more than a general puzzle game. Heck, they even try to improve on previous titles. And let's be honest here... their games aren't extremely expensive, right?

Fantasy tentacles with no goblins! ;)

See, this is why I can appreciate this title so much: the developers pay attention to their audience (at least that's my impression). First we had 'Girl and Goblin' (release: January 2019) which was later followed by 'Fantasy girl' (released in July 2019). 'Fantasy girl' was a puzzle game which featured scantly clad (or plain out naked) Anime fantasy girls (duh!) in all kinds of different situations. From standing under a shower to wielding a sword and some even managed to find themselves attacked by tentacles.

The last type of pictures became quite popular with the players (that's what I make from checking out the forums) and so, as a logical result, the developer now gives us more of the stuff we enjoyed so much: more girls getting harassed by even more tentacles ;)

In conclusion...

Very fine game for a very reasonable (if not plain out fair) price. You puzzle your way around hentai pictures which feature Anime girls who are trying to make their way into a cave full of tentacles. There are 12 levels, 12 girls and 12 achievements to get. And don't forget to pick up on the free R18 DLC if you want to see even more clothes getting removed ;)

One of the best Anime series off all time

Section 9 is an elite taskforce working within the government at the highest level possible. They have special clearance which gives them the opportunity to intervene when other options are no longer available. When a foreign diplomat goes rogue and tries to smuggle stolen information which could jeopardize the security of the entire nation of Japan then there's still little which law enforcement can do because of this thing called diplomatic immunity. Not so much for Section 9 though... provided that their Intel is 100% accurate of course they can and will intervene when given the order. Even a direct assassination is well within their options, despite all the diplomatic backlash this could create. But then again, terrorist attacks simply happen sometimes ;)

General plot

The serie consists of 2 seasons and each has a general plot. In the first the team comes across the "Laughing man", a master hacker who can even compromise global networks and manipulate them in real time. Meaning? His first public appearance was on a live weather talk where he held someone at gunpoint, trying to make them confess something. The moment he realized the camera's were also pointed at him it only took him seconds before he managed to hide his face behind the now infamous "laughing man logo". Live... on public television.

Season 2 goes into the story of the "Individual Eleven". A terrorist group which tries to stir trouble between several refugee groups which are living in Japan and the nation itself. This is just the general jist: season 2 is filled with political deception, plots where people try to gain power and even touches on the threat of a nucleair based attack. Although still a masterpiece I didn't enjoy season 2 as much as season 1.

Complex & Dual....

Both seasons consist of 2 types of episodes... Dual episodes tell a (sometimes stand-alone) story but they contain bits and pieces which will have an impact on the overall outcome; hence the name 'dual' which refers to two stories rolled in one. Better pay careful attention because these bits are not always spelled out in an obvious way, though several discoveries made throughout the series will get addressed in future episodes, sometimes also in more detail.

The Complex episodes simply tell a story which will have no ties nor consequences for the general plot, although all episodes do often reference each other.

Action and intrigue

What I enjoy the most about this series is that it's believable. This is not your modern non-stop action series, far from it. There will be scenes which contain plenty of action but just as in real life most of the action takes places behind the scenes: when the team is busy working out the mission at hand. And the story really goes deep at times, very deep where things can sometimes even become a little uncomfortable.

Even the Major who is usually very straight forward and directly to the point has her soft spots. And when a case slightly affects her then you'd better not get in her way, or else...

Oh, those intro's....

The vocals on the intro music scores ("Inner Universe" for season 1 and "Arise" for the second gig (2nd season)) are done by Origa (music by Yoko Kanno) who manages to roll Japanese, Russian and English vocals into one song with ease. I tell you: Japanese combined with Russian? It sounds very different and very, very, special.

In conclusion....

The quality of the Steam videos isn't top notch, for example the subtitles are a joke (in ALL CAPS?) but on the other hand they do provide the videos in all available languages and yah... I think this is a really good way to sit back and relax on Steam while having this run on a second monitor or something.

I'd still recommend buying DVD's or Blueray's before this, but in the overall this too is a very good purchase in my opinion.
