Important: no spoilers in my review!

Awesome Anime detective game!

This game has a bit of a rough start (during the prologue you can't really do much (not even change your settings or even quit!) and you have to progress through the story which can become quite annoying if you're suddenly considering to start over and use some different playing options). Which immediately brings me to: Japanese. Whatever you're going to do I strongly suggest you play this with the Japanese language! Don't worry.... you'll still be able to follow everything because the texts all remain in English. But the character voices will be Japanese and trust me when I say that it seriously enhances the atmosphere of this game! (in case you're wondering: yes, I started with English and during the prologue I figured that Japanese might have been better SO... 20 - 30 minutes later I could finally start over). But it was well worth it because I learned up close & personal how much better the voice acting is. And don't worry: even if you don't understand Japanese at all you'll still be able to recognize the characters moods or anxieties.

The atmosphere is amazing

As one could expect from this type of game it starts with an opening animation as if it were a real animated series, and it's brilliant.. the opening 'movie' itself is all you need to understand what this game is about. No, not all the specific details like "actions" and "free time" of course, but the general gist of the game is well showcased.

And the atmosphere is seriously something else. The combination of a good background music ("BGM") together with interesting characters... I don't necessarily like visual novels yet here we are: this game is pulling me right in!

But now I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here!

The story

You are Makoto Naegi (苗木 誠); a pretty average student who has been invited to attend one of the most prestige schools in the city: Hope Peak academy! Only the best of the best are invited for this school, in fact: most of the other students are also known as "Ultimates"; people who have achieved something outstanding and have risen to be the best of the best in what they do. From a well known pop-star to a novel writer, martial artist and even the baddest of the bad: a (motor)gang member who is both respected and feared throughout the underworld.

However, things don't quite go the way you've been expecting... it soon turns out that Hope Peak doesn't provide much hope at all, it's more a place of despair because you end up locked inside the school; you're expected to spend the rest of your life here, totally cut off from the outside world. Fortunately there is a way out: by murdering one of your fellow students without getting caught. Talk about a devious plottwist!

The game (edit)

Now that I've finished my first case I feel confident enough to add this section to my review knowing that it won't contain spoilers. Yah, I may have been a little too eager with posting the review but... that's only because I think this game is a lot of fun!

So you're staying in Hope's Academy which is controlled by a murderous bear. The rules are simple: you'll have to live here for the rest of your life unless someone murders someone else. If the students manage to find the killer then he or she gets punished ("executed"), but if they fail to determine who the real killer is then he or she will graduate and the rest of the students will be put to death. No pressure here! :)

After a murder takes place.. or better put: after a body is found this will be publically announced and the students can then try and collect evidence to determine who the killer is. If you find a piece of evidence related to the case you'll collect a so called "truth bullet", these are to be used during the class trial which follows next. There you'll have to counter other people's statements with arguments of your own (using those "truth bullets"; the name comes from the fact that you're basically presenting facts). When all goes well the trial procedures will lead to the real killer.

At the end you'll need to fill in the missing parts of a comic strip in order to fully recapture what exactly happened. After that a vote is held to determine the real killer.

(end of edit)

Oh, the atmosphere...

I can well imagine that visual novels aren't for everyone (I usually don't like them) but this game does so many things right it's honestly sucking me right into the storyline. At the time of writing I'm almost 3 hours in, nothing really happened just yet, but I'm already quite eager to continue playing.

As I mentioned earlier: do yourself a huge favor and don't play this in English; Japanese is really the best choice by far, you can almost hear the effort that had to go into all this, some of those voice actors and actresses are amazing in my opinion. And yes... it's mostly reading; not everything is spoken out loud. But even those small sighs and hisses can reveal a lot about someones state of mind, trust me on that.

In conclusion....

If a game is a bit complex I normally play it for a few days ("sleep it over") before writing a review so that I can be sure that I don't make mistakes (which sometimes happen). With this game however I'm a little worried about accidentally adding spoilers to my review which is why I wrote a review the same day as I started playing. Please keep this in mind... at the time of writing I know about "actions"; this basically boils down to reacting to something which another character is telling you, and I've experienced "free time"; during this moment you can do whatever you want: investigating or maybe conversing with other characters... You can even try and befriend some, for whatever that's worth of course.

One tip I can (and will) give you: if you're someone who is curious by nature then you're going to love this. The game actually rewards you for looking into places which may seem like nothing special, and that kind of curiosity will really help you get along into the storyline. Just make sure you pay good attention to the things people tell you, it'll become important!

Two thumbs up from me! It's hard to imagine that this game is already six years old, it sure managed to age very well. Highly recommended!

One of the better erotics games out there!

This game is easily a classic in the making I think; it provides pretty much everything you could want from this type of game and on top of that: the price is very fair when looking at the contents you get for it. Not to mention the upcoming DLC! It is a graphic novel, which is a game type that won't appeal to everyone, but trust me when I say that you don't have to worry about endless clicking to get through boring story lines which never seem to end. You'll do some clicking, but the story is pretty to the point. No hours of clicking!

The story

It's very simple which is what makes it so good: Serena went to a party with her boyfriend. And she was ready to party alright, she even left her panties at home! Unfortunately they end up in a fight and Serena got the short end of the stick: kicked out of the car in the middle of nowhere. Barely wearing anything, walking on high heels which kill her feet and she's miles away from home.

Now what?

A bit limited in choices, but very satisfying

Look, surely you understand that you can't expect too much for a mere 5 bucks, right? But if you look at the stuff you do get and better yet: if you also look at the way the story progresses then you'll notice that the developers really put time & effort into this. The models look good, the pictures/sceneries look believable (using good facial expressions in my opinion) and in a way the story is somewhat believable.

And you can get any kind of situation you may want. Are you someone who thinks Serena should make it home safe? That's possible. Or maybe you're looking forward to seeing the poor girl get jumped? Yah, there's that too. Or maybe you're just eager to see her getting seduced into things she may or may not want to do?

This game really has a bit of everything and I like it that way. In my first play through Serena got home safe, in my second.. well, she wasn't that lucky all of a sudden.

In conclusion....

If you're into erotic based games then I think you should seriously consider to pick this one up. It's not too expensive, it features a cute looking protagonist and you'll get into a story which can go either way. From the classic damsel in distress kind of situation right to a little lady who knows what she wants and who won't allow herself to get baited into things she doesn't want to do. You go girl!

An easy 2 thumbs up from me, good enjoyable game.

PS: and if you do buy this title (good on you!) don't forget to keep an eye out for the upcoming DLC as well (time of writing of course). Seems some aliens also got their eyes set on Serena and who knows what they're going do to her....

Great game, but...

The game itself is honestly very cool. You find yourself and a girl on an island and you'll need to try and see to survive here best as you can. Which means trying to look for resources to keep yourself and the girl fed, provide some shelter and craft tools to help you "do" stuff. For example: finding a broken fishing rod and some driftwood allows you to craft a fishing rod. And that gives you access to a fishing activity which gets you some food.

Because you can fully customize both characters you can really try and work out your fantasies. The atmosphere of this game is plain out brilliant, it truly is. If you start playing this game "as-is" though you may get a little confused because the girl doesn't sound very interesting at all, quite the opposite even! This can definitely ruin your game, but it's not a problem. See, the idea is to create your own characters first and then use those for the fantasy island adventure.

Now things will become a lot more enjoyable!

However.... this game has some serious issues, which is why I cannot recommend it (especially not for the full price!), despite the fact that I honestly think that this is a brilliant game in itself. The thing is: the more I dive into this game the more I get the feeling that the Steam version was but an afterthought.

Bizarre character creation

The game allows you to create both male and female characters and then undergo the island adventure. It sounds good, but considering the fact that you can only create Asian characters... why can you only create random names in English instead of Japanese (or Asian for that matter)? That makes no sense. I don't want my Asian looking girl to be named "Mary Sue", it's stupid.

Another thing I noticed was that the male customization also leaves a lot to desire. For example: what are all those female hair styles doing in the customization process of my male character? A male character who can have 2 pony tails but not a rugged looking hairstyle? That's just dumb.

And to add insult to injury the game doesn't even properly manage to handle the customizations. In the beginning of the game the girl character is standing over you with her head bowed. Yah, so I get to see all her hair glitch through her neck, that's.... "not good".

Censorship

This is the part I plain out dislike. It's not because I can't appreciate erotic contents (erotic doesn't always imply nudity you know) but the problem is that it's Illusion themselves who describe this game as something that contains nudity. Yet it doesn't, everything is censored. Heck, the game itself doesn't even have an Steam Adult rating applied to it (this would keep it hidden from people who don't explicitly enable adult contents).

Keep in mind: Illusion is well known for its adult games, sometimes even plain out hardcore. So it's only natural to expect something like that in here as well. Don't take my word for it, just read their Wikipedia page right here[en.wikipedia.org].

Ectasy patch

Sure, they do provide a patch which allows you to uncensor the game and from what I read it also provides more interaction. See their official Foreign customer support page[www.illusion.jp]. In case you're wondering: "foreign" implies "Non-Japanese"; this game was originally released for the Japanese market only.

While this can definitely make the game more enjoyable for sure I'm still not happy. Because if you apply this patch you're changing the game, which means that uploading screenshots can land you into problems on Steam, especially if you upload "adult stuff". As innocent as a topless girl may seem, it's ill advised to upload such pictures.

Why? Because the vanilla game (so: as it's available on Steam) doesn't feature topless girls. The game is also not rated as "adult" so it's not allowed to share any adult stuff like that.

I don't know about you, but for me that ruins quite a bit of the fun. Steam is also about sharing stuff afterall.

Gameplay

The gameplay is really good, which is another reason why I don't enjoy clicking "No" below my review. You find yourself stranded on an island, only this strange girl is with you. So you start with trying to get some food, setting up a bit of a camp and then the two of you go out to explore the island.

I really enjoy how the game can really manage to build up with its activities. You basically collect resources, craft stuff and also try to get a good relationship with the girl(s?) around you. Seriously: this is erotics in the way it should be. As I mentioned above: it's more than just nudity, and yeah, considering the quality of the models it can actually be quite cute to see your friend walk around and discover all sorts of things on her own.

On the down side though the interactions aren't all that extensive. Sure, you can ask the girl how she feels and ask her to do something for you, but it's still quite limited. And to be perfectly honest: that can become boring quite easily.

In conclusion....

Generally speaking this is a good and fun game, though maybe a bit overpriced. You design your own character(s) and then interact with them during your island adventure. Even though the store page mentions nudity you won't find that in here. And that can become bothersome. Why have the ability to apply tanlines if you can't really see what they do?

Although there is a patch available you should be careful because this can result in problems if you upload adult screenshots; as mentioned before even a topless girl can become a problem there.

Which is why I can't recommend this game. It's good, but it should have been better. Especially considering the hefty pricetag. At the very least they should have tagged this "Adult only", and provided the full uncensored game. Because that would allow us to fully enjoy all Steam functions without any restrictions as well as a solid erotics game.

Thanks for reading!

This pack isn't so bad anymore...

If you look at the storepage of this DLC you might be wondering if I had my coffee yet, or worse: have I turned in one of those fanboys? You know: someone who will praise a product despite everyone else hating on it, even though the others have very good arguments to dislike the product. Because why can I praise this while everyone else dislikes it (and for good reasons!)?

Don't worry, I haven't lost my mind and I'm most definitely not a fanboy (at least not in the negative sense of the word). Quite the contrary:

Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe Edition

See, you can't buy this DLC separately anymore, but only as part of the deluxe edition. In fact, the only buy option on the store page (at the time of writing!) is the one which gets you the deluxe edition. So I'm not going to review this single DLC, heck no, I'm going to review the Deluxe Edition instead! And while I also cannot recommend this individual DLC I can in full honesty recommend the deluxe pack.

Elite Dangerous

This is what it's really about and Elite Dangerous is an awesome game which I highly recommend. You can read my full review of the game here.

The commander pack

The commander pack by itself is pretty "meh"; definitely not worth your money should you consider to buy it separately (but you can't do that anymore!). See, it only provides 6 liveries for 3 ships in the game which simply isn't a good deal. Look... the Sidewinder is the ship you start off with, chances are high you'll never use it anymore once you got another ship. The Cobra MkIII is a very popular ship, I myself have one too and I love it. But once again... it's highly likely that you won't be using it for too long, not after you got your hands on one of the "high end" ships. The same can be said about the Viper: it's a good ship, but eventually you'll definitely be moving on towards a better ship, just like you'd do with the Cobra.

So this DLC is a nice addition to the deluxe edition, but you should never buy this individually.

Horizons seasons pass

If you're into Elite Dangerous then you really owe it to yourself to add Horizons as well. I am honestly not exaggerating when I say that I cannot imagine myself playing Elite Dangerous without Horizons. It really is that good and adds so much more to do in the game. You can read my full review on Horizons right here.

In conclusion...

This DLC isn't the shoddy DLC it once was. You can no longer "waste" your money on a few liveries for ships which you'll most likely eventually stop using because there are better variants available. Simply because the only way to buy this DLC is to buy the deluxe edition.

Well, and as mentioned above, the Deluxe Edition is something I can highly recommend.

Say about Frontier (developer of Elite Dangerous) what you want but when I see this store page I can't help be convinced that they really listen to their customers. People felt a bit "conned" when buying this pack and so you can no longer buy it individually. Maybe they should have known better, perhaps, but they did fix their mistake in the end and I can only respect that.

Therefor, as one of the few here, I highly recommend this purchase. But only within the context I've described above: this product can only be bought if you buy the Deluxe edition (as shown on that store page) and within that context... this is honestly a very good purchase.

Thanks for reading!

If you could enter a comic book, would you?

Well, Maxwell and his sister Lily would, that's for sure! Heck, that's what got us Scribblenauts unmasked in the first place! But now I'm really getting ahead of myself here ;)

Scribblenauts is a Nintendo classic where you play the role of 'Maxwell', a young boy who has a magical notebook which allows him to get (or change) anything he wants in the world! His sister Lily owns a globe that allows her to go to any place in the world, or send someone else there! In the original game (Scribblenauts Unlimited, follow the link to go to the store page) you had to save your sister Lily from turning to stone. This game tells us what happened after that.

Batman, Superman, Justice League, Green Lantern....

So as it turns out Maxwell and Lily really enjoy reading comic books but they don't quite agree on who is the best of the best, sometimes they even fight over that! So one day they decided to try and find out for themselves! Lily helped Maxwell to connect his book to her globe and then Maxwell wrote "Gotham City", and wooosh!: the next moment they were actually in Gotham City, home of Batman!

As it turns out super heroes all over the world are having problems with their arch enemies and Maxwell quickly finds out that his evil twin, Doppelganger, is helping the villains! So now it's up to you to go out into all the different superhero realms and try to put a stop to evil!

About the game

To be honest I have some mixed feelings about this title, but then again I'm not exactly the kind of gamer it was intended for ;) It has some really good things going for itself but can also get a little chaotic.

First: it's most definitely a good Scribblenauts game, instead of the real world you'll now be playing in several superhero settings. From Gotham City, Metropolis (where Superman lives), Oa (the planet of the Green Lantern) and so on... Although I'm far from being a comic book expert I do think it's very fitting that they paid attention to the different outfits (or "versions") that are available for some superheroes and supervillains alike. For example: there's a huge difference between Batman from the original TV series and Batman from the movies; this game does its best to pay homage to all of those different versions.

Just as in the original game you'll come across a lot of people who are having problems, so it's up to you and your notebook to try and help them out. But now there's a catch... If you use the same solution multiple times you won't get as many rewards; always try to come up with unique solutions to get the best out of this game!

It could have been better, I think...

And that brings me to my second point: in my opinion this game doesn't really live up to the quality of the original game. Don't get me wrong: it's most definitely a real Scribblenauts game and it's even a bit more challenging. But sometimes you get the impression that the developers tried to cram as many problems into a level as they possibly could, and sometimes it's hurting the game.

I've been in situations where I "fixed" two problems at the same time, but I solved the second problem purely by accident!

And sometimes it can get really difficult to keep track of what's going on... the game sometimes even tries to rush you to go to a next level, even if you didn't finish the one you're currently playing just yet! But then again, that could be just me of course. As mentioned before I don't exactly fall within the intended audience ;)

Summing up

All in all this game is seriously good and a lot of my enjoyment comes from all the solid details in here. Maxwell's sister Lily is extremely excited to be in Gotham City, but as we all probably know Batman is usually a little grumpy. SO yeah, I couldn't help grinning a bit when I see Lily constantly ask Batman for something to which he always answers: "No.", it's silly but fun.

Batman gives you access to the batcomputer which also happens to contain information about all the available DC comic characters, so every time you encounter someone you don't know: just look them up!

And just like in the original game the object editor also makes a comeback, but this time it's a "Superhero creator", you can use it to make your own superheroes (or villains), and as before you can save those creations and share them with friends.

So all in all... this is a very worthy Scribblenauts game; it pays respect to the original (even references some of those events) and yeah... this is what you get if you mix Scribblenauts with the DC comic books :)

A well deserved 2 thumbs up from me!

Solid attempt

The original 'Seek girl' series is a silly (in a good way!) series of games where you hammer down an anime girl and by doing so reveal an underlying image. Sounds bizarre? It is ;)

However, this game completely does away with the silliness of the first games and actually turned it into a "rescue the girl" RPG-like game. Early access, so there's no way to tell what this is going to become of this but from what I can see so far... it's fun!

You navigate through a maze with slime monsters running amok and your task is to rescue the girls in the maze. I have no clue what's next because so far I managed to rescue 2 girls but even so, I think this is fun nonetheless. Most definitely a new approach into seeking girls... in a mist :)

In conclusion....

2 thumbs up. Early access isn't really my thing but considering the past silly but fun games I really have my hopes up that this is going to be good. I suppose we'll see when the first update hits, but until then... don't expect to much but if you keep your expectations low (while keeping 'Seek Girl' in mind) I think you're going to enjoy. I know I did!

Whack a anime girl mole WAS here!

This edited review pains me, a lot. No, I didn't go "woke" and I will gladly give up the awards and likes I got so far, I'm also sorry because I really liked this game.

So this was "whack a girl" at its finest, it didn't take itself too seriously. Easily noticed because of the squeecky sound of the hammer when it hit. It was fun, it sounded harmless, it even made my gf laugh!

Yes, I am one of those guys who has no problem sharing his naugty stuff with his gf. And before we even GO here: I also play WAY more offensive stuff than this and she couldn't care less. This is about this once awesome game which turned into stupid.

And I will fully agree that the reasoning is also kinda stupd, but you can't argue with perception!

The fun squeeky sound got replaced with a hammer sound.

Sorry, no longer a fan. Screw that crap....

A brutal blast from the past

This game is pretty old yet has aged quite well. Although the animations may look crude with all the things we can achieve now you need to keep in mind that when this game got first released this was very revolutionary.

Keep in mind that this game is brutal, there's hardly a margin for errors and if you do make an error then prepare to play the scene all over again. And trust me: mistakes are easily made. Overlooking only one small snail sized monster can prove fatal when stepped on it.

The story

You're a researcher who gets ready to conduct an experiment with a particle collider. Unfortunately a lightning blast hits the main circuit and an explosion happens, sending you to 'Another world'. A hostile world filled with strange alien beings which are all out to get you.

The controls are very simple; you move your character left and right and can perform specific actions. In the first stages of the game this is limited only to kicking with your foot, later on you'll also be able to fire weapons.

Summing up....

Considering the price of this game I'd say it's a no brainer. A platform game, sure, but one with some serious history behind it. It may get frustrating at some points, but once you proceed to finish a level it'll also be very rewarding.

Must have for Elite players!

In my opinion the basis game of Elite Dangerous is plain out awesome in itself, even without DLC. There's already so much to explore, discover and to do. Trading, smuggling, mining, bounty hunting, etc. I have to admit that at the time of writing this review I'm only 6 hours into the full game, but even so...

This DLC adds a whole new dimension to the art of space exploration by allowing us to actually land on planets! Even if there are no settlements or spaceports or whatever, so make sure you know how to manually land / dock your ship because your fancy docking computers won't help you here.

Once on the planet you can deploy a rover to explore the surface (if you have one), heck, you may even be able to find and mine minerals.

As if having thousands of star systems wasn't enough we can now even explore the several planets within those star systems. Even if the game originally never intended for this ;)

Summing up...

Some people claim that the functionality of this DLC should have been part of the base game. While it would make sense I don't pick this up as a cashgrab by the developers. And quite frankly.. having played the vanilla game (but for roughly 5 hours or so) I really don't think that there's anything missing. It's the figurative icing on the cake I think.

Not to mention that the space exploration game I was severely hooked on before Elite Dangerous, a game called 'Freelancer', never had this feature at all; the only place you could dock were space stations or planets which had a settlement. Manually docking your ship? What's that? ;)

But.. having said that.. it's also fair to say that this DLC adds so much more to the game that it truly is a must have.

So in conclusion.. this DLC gets two thumbs up for me. If you enjoy playing Elite Dangerous then you're going to love this as well. In fact... I can't even imagine not firing up Horizons anymore in order to play. It really is that good.

Review 2.0 ;)

My first review was more like a rant about the bad registration process and a brief mention about the game itself. Time to fix that mess!

About the game

Elite Dangerous is the successor to the 80's hit game Elite; it's a space trading game in which you own a ship, try to earn credits and then use those credits to get better ships which will also allow you to make better credits.

Choose your career

The fun in Elite Dangerous comes from the ability to do a lot of different things to earn credits. For example; every space port you visit will have a few missions available, these are given out by the several factions that have a presence on that station. Undertaking such a mission means you'll earn credits but also get a better reputation amongst that faction which will result in better payment for future missions.

Then there are the commodities; you can buy and sell stuff in every base. The trick is to buy low and sell high which can make you a good profit, depending on the amount of items you can haul of course. Which brings me to ....

Customizing your ship

A space ship consists of modules, internal modules which your ship absolutely needs and optional modules which you can exchange for others. Every space port provides different modules which you can use to enhance your ship. For example; a better power supply will make sure you have better options for better tools such as lasers and such. This modular design will allow you to make your ship a lot better than it originally is.

And more... it also allows you to change the functions of your ship. For example... if you're hauling cargo it makes sense to add more cargo racks. If you're going to mine then you obviously want a refinery and some cargo collection limpets which get controlled by a limpet controller. ... or you get a ship which can house all of this together of course ;)

Exploration

There are thousands of star systems available in the game and each of them can have planets you can land on, or it has space ports which you can dock to. This will allow you to discover new markets and get access to new missions which you can undertake.

All in all this game can keep you busy for hours and hours to come....

Worthless registration process though...

To play this game you need to register with Frontier and then link that account to your Steam account. Unfortunately this process is pretty flawed which can result in the game not even recognizing your game license. This should resolve itself though, but it can be a major annoyance at first. So keep it in mind...

In conclusion

If you enjoy the idea of flying a spaceship anywhere in the known galaxy, trading commodities, going after pirates (or the 'good' guys), mining, exploring... then this is probably just the game for you.

It may be tricky to get started, especially in the beginning it can ba difficult to find a good way to make some credits, but once you got the hang of it things will only get better from there on.

I definitely recommend this, 2 thumbs up!
