Found this on Google while looking up the original Flash game and decided to give it a try, seeing as I had some money in my Steam wallet. I'm so glad I did. Avalanche 2 takes the original game's foundation and fleshes it out into a roguelike with lots of new features that complement the gameplay extremely well and make it much more enjoyable to play.

While I haven't sat down and played it for very long, I'm already fairly confident in saying this game's great. I'd highly recommend giving it a shot.

Update: This game is a great fit for the Steam Deck too, as long as you set the controls properly. It's a great pick-up-and-play game that feels right at home on a handheld.

This was one of my favorite GameCube games growing up, and I have some very fond memories of it. Recently, I backed the Kickstarter for console ports based off this remastered PC version and decided to buy the Steam version as a Backerkit add-on. I haven't played very much of the Steam version yet, but from what I've played so far, this is definitely a great way to experience this classic game.

I'll update this review once I have more time to properly sit down and play it for a while, but sadly, I'm gonna be really busy this week.

EDIT: I beat it the other day after playing it on and off during breaks and it's pretty great! There were a few technical hiccups here and there, but overall, I stand by my opinion that this isn't a half-bad way to play Ty 2. Mouse + Keyboard controls work a lot better for this game than I thought they would, and the game itself still holds up pretty well.

My dad got a physical copy of this game back in the early 2000s when it was relatively new (I don't remember the specific year, I was very young). I tried it out a few times over the years, but never got very far. Regardless, I still find myself coming back to this game from time to time when I'm feeling nostalgic... Even bought the Steam version too!

Starscape is great fun, even though I personally kinda suck at it. It's an older game for sure, but I've yet to see anything quite like it, and despite its age, it still works fine on my Windows 10 PC. Would definitely recommend. If you're on the fence, there's a free demo so you can decide for yourself whether or not you like it enough to buy it.

Also, please learn from my mistakes and remember to save! The game ain't gonna do it for you.

The Henry Stickmin games were some of my favorite Flash games growing up. The games' silly humor was on-point, and their artstyle, while on the simple side (especially in its early entries), was super charming and instantly recognizable. Very easy to draw, too!

That said, you can imagine my excitement when I heard PuffballsUnited had released a remastered collection of the Henry Stickmin games... And not only that, there's a whole new entry to boot, bigger than any game prior! I normally don't buy a game the instant I hear about it, but I made an exception this time... and I have no regrets.

The Remasters
First, I'd like to discuss the remastered games. The visual difference between the original games and their remasters is honestly night and day. The environments in each game have been given a nice big facelift, bringing each game up to modern standards. If you want some visual examples of this, watch this video showing some side-by-side comparisons of scenes from the original games alongside their HSC remasters.

However, there is a bit of an elephant in the room that's worth mentioning. The original games, being Flash games on the internet, often contained copyrighted/trademarked sounds and assets, which have all been replaced in the remastered releases with new, audibly/visually similar ones, making a few references not land quite as well. That said, I don't think it's a very big deal (it's usually fairly obvious what they're referencing), and it's a sacrifice I will gladly accept if it means this collection can be sold on Steam.

Completing the Mission
Now, onto the new game: Completing the Mission. It's huge. You start by selecting two endings from the previous two games (Infiltrating the Airship and Fleeing the Complex) to act as a backstory to your playthrough. Then, the game begins. The length of each path varies; some of the shorter ones are around the length of an Escaping the Prison path, while most go on a little longer. As with the previous remasters, the art looks fantastic, and the writing and humor is just as great as the previous games, if not better... This game could've released a year or two after Fleeing the Complex and almost nothing would seem out-of-place... barring a couple modern references, of course.

Like I said in the beginning of this review, I grew up playing the Henry Stickmin games. They were a big part of my childhood, and if this is where the series ends, I honestly couldn't think of a better sendoff. Please, do yourself a favor and buy this game. It's 100% worth the money... And let's be honest, we could all use some simple, lighthearted humor right about now.

I use this program all the time for everything from 3D modeling, texturing, UV mapping, animation, and rendering, and I honestly can't recommend it enough. I switched from 3DS Max to Blender, and I am NEVER looking back. I personally found that watching CGMatter's comedic, fast-paced Blender tutorials helped me get comfortable using it pretty quickly, but if you prefer more in-depth, longer-form tutorials, his second channel, Default Cube, is an excellent option too.

A fascinating behind-the-curtains look into the development process of Half-Life: Alyx, and a great explanation of what the hell's been going on at Valve this past decade. Would definitely recommend.

Preface
I'd like to preface this review with a bit of my personal backstory around this game: I remember loosely following the Kickstarter, but I never really boarded the hype train before it derailed. Years later, I found the game at a local game store for about 5 bucks or so, said "screw it", and bought the PS4 version. Not long after, I was genuinely surprised how much fun I was having with it, and I later got the PC version on Steam.

Gameplay: Mechanics
If you've played the classic Mega Man games, then you already know what to expect in terms of the game's overall structure. Defeat 8 bosses, steal their abilities, and then clear a few more stages to beat the game. Unlike the classic Mega Man games, however, this game features a dash mechanic that, unlike the one from Mega Man X, can be used both in the air and on the ground, can be used while holding down to slide through small holes like in Mega Man 3, and, by holding down and dashing in the air, can even be used mid-jump to rapidly dart down to the ground (Note: Use this one with care!).

That's cool and all, but where the dash REALLY shines is in the absorption feature. Once you damage an enemy enough, it'll become stunned and start glowing one of 4 colors. When this happens, dash into the enemy as fast as you can in order to defeat them and get either a timed powerup or partially fill the AcXel Recover, this game's version of the E-Tank, depending on the color. If you do this fast enough, you absorb more of the enemy's power and begin/continue a combo. Racking up and maintaining combos is key to getting higher scores and ranks. Speaking of which...

Gameplay: Design
This game is quite challenging and focuses a lot more on technique and/or speedrunning than its inspiration, which I found particularly engaging and fun. It genuinely feels great to master a level that once kicked my ♥♥♥ and get a shiny gold S rank for my efforts. I even found myself achievement hunting, to an extent! I honestly can't recall the last time I actively did that.

If anything, the learning curve of this game and the satisfaction I got from mastery oddly reminds me of Sonic's learning curve (especially in the Genesis games and Mania), and I love that series to pieces. Coincidence? I think not.

The game isn't perfect, don't get me wrong - there are random difficulty spikes in some of the levels which kinda ruin the flow of the levels they occur in if you're not prepared for them. It's not a massive deal once you get used to it, and to be fair, this isn't a problem exclusive to Mighty No. 9. The earlier Mega Man games suffered from this too at times.

Soundtrack
The soundtrack, while a little forgettable at times, is still easy on the ears and fun to listen to, and there are definitely a few standout bangers in there. Avi's News Report (the Radio Tower theme) and Allies Obstruct (the boss music) are my personal favorites.

Visuals
The graphics, while not stellar, are fine and generally get the job done pretty well, but the overall visual presentation and artstyle cohesion could've used more work. Not gonna dwell on the pizza-splosions since everyone and their brother has memed on them at this point, but the cutscenes feel like the developers couldn't decide between standard 3D cutscenes or portraits + dialogue (think Ace Attorney or Sonic Colors DS) and instead went with this weird middle ground where everyone stands around and poses. It didn't affect my enjoyment much, but it's worth pointing out.

Voice Acting
The voice acting ranges from alright to pretty bad (Dr. Sanda's voice acting is especially bad), but I personally enjoyed it in a campy sort of way.

Conclusion
All that said, while it's definitely not for everyone (or even every Mega Man fan, for that matter), I would definitely recommend Mighty No. 9 to those looking for a more fast-paced, technical, speedrunning-focused take on Mega Man. It's definitely flawed, but in my opinion, I think this game is worth a try if what I've described sounds interesting to you. If you're on the fence, I'd recommend waiting for a Steam sale or getting it at a local game store. Chances are, it'll be pretty cheap. (Plus, physical copies came with a double-sided poster and a code for the Ray DLC! Used copies may or may not still have these included, so it's a bit of a gamble.)

Also, for those wanting a more vanilla experience, you may have a better time with Mighty Gunvolt Burst. It plays much more like a standard Mega Man game, and has an in-depth customization system to boot. I own both games and I enjoy them for different reasons.

Backstory and Controversy
On a side note, throughout this review, I deliberately avoided discussing the Kickstarter campaign and the controversy surrounding it until now. While I believe the game holds up well on its own merits, it's really hard to discuss this game without also discussing its rather infamous backstory (which, let's be real, is most likely the reason you're even on this store page in the first place).

To say Mighty No. 9 had a troubled development would be putting it extremely lightly, and in hindsight, it's clear as day that director Keiji Inafune didn't have much crowdfunding experience prior to this project. While I don't think he's a con man like many people make him out to be, there's no denying that he dropped the ball HARD in terms of managing customers' expectations, communication with both backers and business partners, and of internal budgeting and setting realistic goals.

Now that Comcept has been acquired by Level-5, only time will tell where this franchise goes from here. Mighty Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt Burst were generally well-received, so perhaps there is still hope that this series can continue, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.
