Description
The first true capital ship produced by Hyperion Systems, few vessels symbolise the CEU's commitment to the acquisition of new worlds better than the Artemis Atmospheric Command Carrier. Artemis is capable of deploying and resupplying every Hyperion Systems small atmospheric craft. It was designed with a full spectrum of capabilities in mind, including Air Superiority, Special Forces insertion and Ground Attack. Although clad in only destroyer grade armour, Artemis features extremely strong short range firepower capable of destroying incoming missiles and small craft with ease and is more than capable of defending itself against Frigates and smaller large ships. It's real strength however, comes from the wide array of small craft it supports.

Background
As the original creators of the orbital bombardment system; Harbinger, Hyperion Systems engineers knew that fixed military installations would be of little use in this new age of warfare. This fact, together with the CEU's prevalent doctrine of mobility, led them to believe that mobile bases were key to the taking of new worlds. Given the hazardous geography of these worlds, crawler style bases were quickly dismissed in favour of taking to the skies.

Secretly developed at great expense under the codename Project SCARLETT, Artemis was considered a unnecessary investment by many of the CEU Council. Nevertheless, the project was delivered on time and within budget. Its designers were soon vindicated, as within weeks, the campaign to acquire Jupiter's moons had escalated to full scale war with the Phoenix Republic. Colossal “Atlas” planetary lifters were commissioned to deliver Artemis the front line of this conflict, Europa, and within a week, a vast flotilla was dispatched to Jupiter's orbit to assist House Tokugawa's troops on the ground.

Initial reports from the from line were overwhelmingly positive. With Artemis capable of resupplying and deploying dozens of small craft, the small expeditionary Air Force of CDI was quickly overwhelmed. The Republic was initially shocked by the broad spectrum of capability displayed by the CEU Air Force. Few had suspected a faction based in the vacuum of the Main Belt would have any atmospheric capability, let alone be able to gain air superiority. Refusing to surrender their assets, CDI troops dug in, and were soon supported by the newer, Jump Drive capable ships of the Republic. While these ships are capable of destroying the lightly armed Harbinger with ease, Artemis' potent point defence has so far proved too resilient for LAARP missiles. Not only that, Artemis can rapidly deploy squadrons of small craft to defend herself and Shrike pilots can not linger in atmosphere for long before they are attacked by Tarantula Squadrons. Even the mighty Jotunn is of little use against Artemis, as their captains rarely linger in one place for too long. Despite the animosity between the Alliance and the Republic, Hyperion Systems engineers continue to hold Phoenix Fleet Systems in high regard and awaits their inevitable response with baited breath.

Your move, Titan...

The LAARP, Shrike and Jotunn are by Lord Commissar. You can find his work here: http://sp.zhabite.com/profiles/76561198019042567/myworkshopfiles/?appid=244850

FAQ
What? It doesn't work in space!?
Nope. A jack of all trades is a master of none. At some point I'm going to do the mother of all planetary lifters so you can transport Artemis, the Cougar and any other HS atmospherics between planets.

Seems a bit risky putting that much mass in the air doesn't it?
You're absolutely correct, it is, and the Rule of Cool bears some responsibility here. :D That being said, Artemis should be capable of lifting over 10Kt and can fly even after losing over a third of it's lifting thrust. It is also powered with plenty of redundancy by four separate power plants made of multiple small reactors. Not only that she has guns, lots of guns :D

Is that a SHIELD Helicarrier?
This is no replica. Not going to lie to you, It was obviously inspired by it, but that's largely because it seems a efficient layout for a Carrier.

OMG, I destroyed it in one shot with my amazing super PMW. Are you a noob?
Did you destroy it while it was moving and had it's turrets turned on? Because if not, that's not really an achievement, building a PMW that can do that is like day one, Bro. If you have destroyed it while it was moving and defended, do send me a link however, because that's probably something I'd want. :D

I'm sad, this won't run at all well on my PC, can you help?
At nearly twenty thousand blocks, this ship is going to be demanding whatever. However, if you load Artemis into a world, save and then load that world in MidSpace's amazing SE Toolbox, you can swap out the interior walls for light armour. It will weigh more, but it should be able to lift ok. You may get a few more frames that way. Failing that, I will do a light Carrier at some point.

This is my first completed Capital Ship, I have probably made mistakes. If you find one, let me know and I'll try and fix it.

Hey CrimsonAdder,

Thank you for your response and the addition of credit in the Moskva's description. In response I have removed my comment and upvoted your ship. The Moskva is a cool ship, I hope you make the FP.

I'd like to point out that should you wish to take "inspiration" from other ships, it is totally fine. Just put a link in the description and all is good.

Good luck with the fleet!

Hey 5URG3, I've noticed your comment on my recent ship, and this is the first way I found to contact you directly about it.

I did, in fact, credit JD Horx and IMDC with my first ship that was influenced by the IMDC Nestorius. However, I forgot to do this with my space carrier. Thanks for reminding me, I've since fixed that.

Similarly, I have no problem with mentioning you or the Artemis in my description.

However, to be frank, I did not copy the Artemis. It is true that some key areas are similar, the most prominent being the superstructure forward of the bridge, and the horizontal lobes by the stern, but these, along with the very general layout, are the only significant parallels I think can be drawn between the two.

In good spirit, however, I will include a link to your Artemis in the description.

Thank you for the proverbial "slap on the wrist," it certainly has dissuaded me from being "influenced" by other people's designs in the future!

I await your response.
