In hindsight, I don't think gm_bigcity needed any improvement. I just wanted to add some extra features to make it slightly more fun and make it look a little bit less depressing because it was a popular map on my sandbox server. But in that sense, you might as well just make a new map. Working with gm_bigcity was always a tricky balancing act between features and performance because of the layout.
It's also the fact that I know it won't be a small project because I want to do the night version properly (i.e., not just change the brightness). I want to put different soundscapes for night time and I want to add partial illumination to some of the building windows. Doing the soundscapes requires sourcing sound effects or recording them myself, making the sounds loopable, and then testing them out in-game multiple times until I am satisfied. The building illumination requires making custom textures and editing some of the brushwork in the map and (again) lots of testing in-game.
Its all possible, but it takes time, and the source engine workflow is (to put it gently) not the most straightforward.
