Jesus answered hours of research for me. I find it very interesting though, I thought the AK-12 was a pretty good weapon, but guess the Russians didn't think so ;p
AK-200 (the original AK-12) had failed, so AK-400 was adopted and named AK-12 instead. It's pretty much an upgraded AK-74M, it's decent, but still lacks in ergonomics (things like comfortable fire mod switch). It's comptetitor A-545 (modernised AEK-971) was much better, but Kalashnikov Concern were able to push AK-400 into the army, A-545, unfortunately, will be only used by special forces.
