Description
(Made to be used in Phantom-class destroyers.)



Designed to be launched at 104 m/s and with a mass of 36 000 kg, the Type 1 Railgun Projectile has the potential to inflict great damage upon impact. Activating the artificial mass in a strong gravity field will propel the projectile forward, and a sensor will then deactivate the artificial mass after 50 m to reduce the effectiveness of gravity shields.

Effectiveness:

The Type 1 does the most damage when its heavy armor tips are allowed to bury their way into their target.

The Type 1 is most effective against flat surfaces and box-shaped spacecraft. During testing it has consistently punched through 15 layers of heavy armour. This often completely disintegrates the projectile. On some occations the damage also spreads several meters in a horizontal fasion.

Against a angled surface, or one with bumps or protrusions, the effectiveness can drop dramaticly. If it hits with only one tip, it will punch through 2-5 layers. If it hits at an angle so that none of the tips bury into the armor, it will only cause a bump.

Therefore, when choosing a target, aim for the area with the flattest surface for greater effect.

That is a good argument you posed; I guess I went "all or nothing" on cost XD
Also, I'd hold off on changing anything major until the ship collisions are not so wonky :P

Thank you for the help Whiplash! The first designs where very similar to yours regarding the use of blast doors, and what you say is right.The reason I decided on light armor is the amount of resources needed to build one projectile, as this design seemed to me the best compromise between cost and effect. I'm always wiling to revise and update though, I'll start testing new designs :)

Howdy! I'm glad to see I could serve as inspiration :)

In regards to this projectile: I feel that using non deformable blocks (like, say, blast doors) would net you more consistent results and better penetration. Also, you want the projectile to be as heavy as possible so that you can impart maximum kinetic energy into the target. For this reason I feel that you should replace the light armour with heavy to permit the round to withstand moderate point defence and still deal reasonable damage to targets :)
