Y DDRAIG GOCH / THE RED DRAGON

A truly ancient emblem, the Flag of Wales (Welsh: Baner Cymru or Y Ddraig Goch, meaning 'the red dragon') consists of a red dragon passant on a green and white field. As with many heraldic charges, the exact representation of the dragon is not standardised and many renderings exist. The flag is not represented in the Union Flag.

The flag incorporates the red dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colours of green and white. It was used by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, after which it was carried in state to St Paul's Cathedral. The red dragon was then included as a supporter of the Tudor royal arms to signify their Welsh descent. It was officially recognised as the Welsh national flag in 1959. Several cities include a dragon in their flag design, including Cardiff, the Welsh capital.

The oldest known use of the dragon to represent Wales is from the Historia Brittonum,[2] written around 830. It has been associated with Wales since Roman times - the Welsh are a direct line back to the Celtic/Romano-British culture that continued after the fall of Rome's power.

BANER DEWI SANT / ST DAVID'S CROSS

The flag of Saint David (Welsh: Baner Dewi Sant) is normally a yellow cross on a black field, but it has also appeared as a black cross on a yellow field or with an engrailed cross. It represents the 6th-century Saint David (Welsh: Dewi Sant; c. 500 – c. 589), a Welsh bishop of Menevia and the patron saint of Wales.

The Flag of Saint David has been used as a flag representing Wales (as an alternative to the Red Dragon flag), in the same sense that the crosses of Saint George, Saint Andrew and Saint Patrick are used to represent England, Scotland and Ireland (of which they are respectively patron saints). It is similar to the arms of the Diocese of St David's.

The flag can be seen throughout Wales, but not as frequently as the Red Dragon. On Saint David's Day it often plays a central role in the celebrations.

@thepatagonian I was wrong, it was the Urdd Eisteddfod in 2013 (time does fly). I do have a recording. I've sent a friend request and will share it that way.

@Macwelshman That is pretty amazing do you have a recording? @MrMiyagi I am so thrilled with the Welsh Argentine flag you made. I lived in Esquel, Chubut, Patagonia Argentina. There is definitely a cultural imprint down there, that the people are proud of. And you don't have to be a Welsh descendant, at all. I am Welsh on my father's side. So it's not unusual in these areas to encounter red hair and blue eyes, and whereas 60% of Argentines have Italian surnames, in these areas you are much more likely to run into surnames like Brandt, Thorpe, Thomas, Wilson, etc. These towns are little more than outposts of humanity in the vast untrammeled Patagonia, but the people are genuine and friendly. In Esquel their is an old brick chapel Capilla Seion where services are held in Welsh. In nearby Trevelin there is a polygonal central plaza that proudly flies a Welsh flag. Princess Dianna visited a tea house there.

@thepatagonian as a Welshman I warmly welcome all those Welsh Patagonians. My Welsh speaking daughters celebrated the link between our countries with a performance at the youth Eisteddfod show a couple of years ago.

Aha! Y Wladychfa Gymreig in Talaith Chubut, la Provincia del Chubut! Are you from there? What an amazing story and amazing place. It would be so neat to see it. I think I'll have to fix your need for your flag. :)

I love it! Thank you so much for posting this! I am hoping one day someone will make the Welsh-Patagonia flag (my avatar) to celebrate the Welsh settlers in the Patagonia Argentina.
