CHANGES
Included in this mod are two universal changes to the damage calculation of XCOM 2.

The flagship change of this mod is of course armor before ablative! Damage will now be reduced by armor before ablative takes the hit. However, on the flip side, armor can be shredded before ablative is brought down.

Second, hits no longer have 1 minimum damage. This means that if you hit an armored enemy with a weapon that deals less damage than the enemy has armor, you'll deal 0 damage instead of 1.

These changes are universal, meaning they apply to both XCOM, ADVENT, and any third party factions. Both changes can be toggled on or off individually in this mod's configs.

REASONS
If you have mods that turn the Shields stat into 'Ablative' for thematic and gameplay reasons, it doesn't make much sense that they go on the outside of all your other plating. Now ablative's gameplay actually matches its thematic purpose. To reflect this lore change, the damage banners will say ABLATED rather than SHIELDED.

Getting more technical, the old damage calculation actively discouraged mixing both ablative and armor, because the more ablative you had the less likely your armor would ever see use, and any armor you did have was useless until the ablative was gone.

REQUIREMENTS
Yes, you must have the Community Highlander. Why? Because this mod doesn't actually contain any code changes. All the damage calculation stuff is in the Highlander, because any far-reaching changes like this mod must be done through there. What this mod does is simply activate the code I put inside the Highlander.

COMPATIBILITY
"Hold on," I hear you say, "What about actual shields? What happens to them? It doesn't make sense for armor to apply before shields!" Well don't worry, I've got it covered. Check out Energy Shield Overhaul, a mod I made that converts the shielding mechanic into something that doesn't use the Shield stat, so Ablative can have it all to itself.

Another highly recommended mod is Iridar's Defensive Items Overhaul, which gives every XCOM unit access to ablative hit points, making this mod super useful.

Finally, this mod is completely compatible with Cover Damage Reduction, as you can see from the screenshots. It's a great mod and I highly recommend it.

Damage Calc Tweaks is safe to add mid-campaign, maybe even mid-mission, but I haven't tested that. Let me know how it goes!

afaik in community highlander there is an option for this in the ini files
go to 1134256495\Config
or use the mod launcher to jump to "show in explorer"
then then XComGameCore.ini

you should find

Issue 743
; Set to false/commented out if you want damage to hit shields/ablative, then armor, then health (vanilla behaviour)
; Set to true/uncomment it if you want damage to hit armor, then shield/ablative, then health
;ARMOR_BEFORE_SHIELD=true
Oh Hello There 22 Feb @ 6:58pm
@HiertotheStar I think HP from bubble weave and ablative platings are both shields so they can't be separated from each other

Anyway to separate shield hp from ablative hp ? I have Bubble Weave from Additional Vest Mod installed and would like to have damage done to shield then armor then ablative.

Thank you.

do you know if this works alongside irridars armor overhaul 2.0? where armor hp is converted to ablative instead of hp? :lunar2020halodragon:

Could this cause poison damage to be reduced by armor? I have been seeing that a lot in my campaign, and trying to track down the source.

Will this conflict with EW aim mod?

Just finished a campaign with about 685 mods, this one included, and had no major issues! Thanks for putting this up.

Is there anything out there (or a possibility for this mod) to get the damage preview (aka the blinking health bars on enemies) to take into account these damage calc changes?

It's a non-issue really for relatively "vanilla" games, until you meet a shieldbearer, then the dmg previews are all off

One of the best mod ever. Fully compatible with LWOTC. Gives very useful opportunity if you modify stats of armor as well as shields, both for XCOM and Advent.
