Red Faction on Windows 7/8/10 and/or with proper widescreen + achievements
By Mulder
This is a guide on how to configure Red Faction to run on most modern video cards with widescreen resolution, along with additional multiplayer features thanks to the people who made the Alpine Faction mod. This guide used to be about how to use the Dash Faction to get these features, but that mod is outdated now replaced by Alpine Faction, and this guide will now be a 90% copy paste from another guide by one of the admins of that mod including his video with some small tweaks from me, since he already made a guide for it.
the Alpine Faction guide I pulled from, copied and reformated a bit here: https://sp.zhabite.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3480724130

Installing Alpine Faction

This video walks you through the full installation process if you'd like a video guide. The process is very simple though, so if you'd rather avoid spending 4 minutes watching the video, here's what you need to do:
  • Download Alpine Faction from https://alpinefaction.com (You might get a warning that its an unsafe file but that's because its still niche and browsers don't have it on their "safe" list but just go "Keep file" or something similar and it'll work)
  • Run the Alpine Faction installer and follow the prompts.
  • When prompted for the location of "rf.exe", provide the path to that file in your Red Faction install directory. To find that directory, right click on the game in your Steam library, and go to Manage->Browse local files. The file named "rf.exe" will be in the directory that appears. You must point the Alpine Faction installer to rf.exe, NOT RedFaction.exe!
  • Continue to follow the installer prompts until Alpine Faction is installed.

Link a FactionFiles account (optional, for multiplayer options and achievements)
Red Faction doesn't have achievements on Steam but they are supported via the FactionFiles Red Faction community website, and you need to link your FactionFiles account to your Alpine Faction client to start unlocking them.

Ensure you've already installed Alpine Faction BEFORE attempting these account linking steps!
  • How to link your account:
  • Go to FactionFiles and register for an account[www.factionfiles.com], or sign in[www.factionfiles.com]if you already have one).
  • Go to your Profile page[www.factionfiles.com], look for the "Alpine Faction Linking" section, and click "[Add this computer]"
  • When prompted, confirm you wish to open the Alpine Faction Launcher.
  • If the link was successful, you should now see "Linked as X" in the launcher window title, where X is your username. The link will remain as long as you use the same computer unless you manually reset it from the Profile page on the site.

Thanks to the Alpine Faction guy and previously the Dash Faction guy for asking me to update the guide, I don't really follow Red Faction multiplayer scene but if you're into that you can check the afformentioned discords' where people organize matches and events if you want to try it, as for running the game with widescreen this guide works great, after installing Alpine Faction with the (required for steam support) thing you can just press Play on Red Faction in Steam and it'll bring up the launcher and it'll work with hour tracking, for the options I suggest borderless window since it works well which you can set in the settings option thing.
Anything else you can find in-game, for 1440p I also suggest the "big HUD" option in the HUD settings ingame since the UI was way too small for me

To confirm the account linking process was successful and achievements are now available to you, the easiest achievement to get is "Let There be Light!", which unlocks when you turn on the headlamp (flashlight) in single player - simply start a new game and press the headlamp button (configured in Options->Controls). If the achievement is unlocked, you're all set!

Your unlocked achievements can be viewed on your FactionFiles profile page[www.factionfiles.com] by opening it and going to "Click here to view your profile as others would" in account details, which will bring up a list, if that changes in the future with UI changes i'm sure it'll be in there somewhere regardless.

Finally if you have any questions or concerns, or if you run into any trouble following this guide, or using Alpine Faction in general, join the Red Faction Community Discord[discord.gg] for assistance.

You might wanna google that since it sounds like an issue with mouse emulation of the console than red faction in particular, not sure

There's no DF version for RF2.

I wonder if there is a similar version of Dash Faction for Red Faction 2. This helped me with Red Faction 1, no issues with Red Faction 2 yet, but just in-case. Thanks again.

DaisyInTheMiX: Reinstall Dash Faction, and be sure to tick the "Replace Red Faction launcher by a link to Dash Faction launcher" option during the installation.

The issue you described is happening because when you launch Red Faction via Steam, it's launching without Dash Faction. Ticking that checkbox during the install will make Dash Faction launch when you launch Red Faction through Steam.

PS. Drop by the Red Faction community Discord if you run into any further issues - we'd be happy to help out. Here's a link to join: https://discord.gg/factionfiles

I ran the game via the Dash Faction Launcher and it works but when I quit and start the game via Steam it crashes after entering a room (the same room that didn't crashes via the Dash Faction Launcher.
I just wanna play via steam with the adjustments of Dash Faction to see my playtime and make some screens.
Is there anyone who has the same issue?
Thnx in advance !
