How to enable achievements in Red Faction
By Goober
Red Faction has no achievements by default. Enable full achievement support via the Alpine Faction patch.

This patch also makes the game run properly on modern computers, fixes countless bugs, adds autosaving, widescreen support, anti-aliasing, window modes, and much more.

Install Alpine Faction

This video walks you through the full installation process if you'd like a video guide. The process is very simple though, so if you'd rather avoid spending 4 minutes watching the video, here's what you need to do:

  • Download Alpine Faction from https://alpinefaction.com
  • Run the Alpine Faction installer and follow the prompts.
  • When prompted for the location of "rf.exe", provide the path to that file in your Red Faction install directory. To find that directory, right click on the game in your Steam library, and go to Manage->Browse local files. The file named "rf.exe" will be in the directory that appears. You must point the Alpine Faction installer to rf.exe, NOT RedFaction.exe!
  • Continue to follow the installer prompts until Alpine Faction is installed.
Link to your FactionFiles account
Because achievement support has been added by the Alpine Faction community patch, using Steam's built-in achievement feature is not possible. Achievements are supported via the FactionFiles Red Faction community website instead, and you need to link your FactionFiles account to your Alpine Faction client to start unlocking them.

Ensure you've already installed Alpine Faction BEFORE attempting these account linking steps!

How to link your account:
  • Go to FactionFiles and register for an account[www.factionfiles.com] (or sign in[www.factionfiles.com], if you already have one).
  • Go to your Profile page[www.factionfiles.com], look for the "Alpine Faction Linking" section, and click "[Add this computer]"
  • When prompted, confirm you wish to open the Alpine Faction Launcher.
  • If the link was successful, you should now see "Linked as X" in the launcher window title, where X is your username. The link will remain as long as you use the same computer unless you manually reset it from the Profile page on the site.

For a more in-depth explanation of this process, visit https://alpinefaction.com/link
Play the game!
To begin unlocking achievements, simply launch Alpine Faction and play the game - that's it!

To confirm the account linking process was successful and achievements are now available to you, the easiest achievement to get is "Let There be Light!", which unlocks when you turn on the headlamp (flashlight) in single player - simply start a new game and press the headlamp button (configured in Options->Controls). If the achievement is unlocked, you're all set!

Your unlocked achievements can be viewed on your FactionFiles profile page. As an example, you can click here[www.factionfiles.com] to view my unlocked achievements.

Using Alpine Faction on Steam Deck through Proton, and unfortunately have no way to link my FactionFiles account to the game.
