About figuring stuff out, for me it was mostly trial and error :D Only part I got from tutorials is how to get custom weapons to Skyrim.
The files were in weird format, so I had one or two different programs to convert models (don't remember what they were, just googled how to convert .something to .another) to more common formats.
Then I opened them in 3DSMax/Blender (I don't remember which one) and did some changes to models so that they would look better in game, like resizing, rotating, some minor edits.
After that I exported models that would work with Skyrim's modding tools.
