This is still the best open world game I've ever played with story and writing rivaling that of even the old school Black Isle rpg classics. Even lowly minor subquests have interesting story, characters, and dialogue. And of course you can make choices and they have impact. Combat takes a little getting used to but is challenging and fun, especially on Death March. Even if you hate the combat just turn it to easy so you can still experience the amazing story, characters, and world.

Honestly not worth it at all full price. If you get it on a heavy sale then it should be worth it. To put succintly, this game lacks depth. I can't help but compare it to the Borderlands games in my mind which have significantly more depth than this game. The skills in this game are also pretty lame.

Basically what I did is turned off autoaim and used a sniper to hit the weakspot of everybody. Pretty sure that's the highest dps assuming you don't miss much. Annoyingly when you zoom with a sniper the reticle shakes which adds difficulty to headshots. No stats fix this.

The AI is abysmal. Your teammates you bring with you are literally worthless and only good for being a distraction to enemies so you can snipe the weak point on their back. Enemy AI is just as bad only they're programmed to actually be aggressive and they have pretty good aimbot. So if you're caught out in the open vs certain enemies you're dead. You then get to watch your teammates roll around your corpse 20 times before they decide to revive you. There are no instant heal skills you can use on yourself, only on other teammates. And your AI teammates are unreliable about healing you. So you'll quickly learn hit and run tactics while your first aid kit gadget slowly heals you. Fortunately in the right environments you can cheese enemies and abuse their stupid AI, like how I finally beat the hardest pvp quest boss in the game by sniping them and then climbing the wall to escape.

I will say though I thoroughly enjoyed my custom avatar and the skintight suit I gave her... I also like how you can change the colors of everything you have equipped including your guns.

As usual for a Sword Art Online game the story is trash and characters are cliche at best. No English dub so I can't even enjoy that.

Keyboard and mouse controls work great with this game, no complaints at all.

Play borderlands instead if you haven't already. Otherwise wait for a heavy sale. I admit I did have fun shootin' stuff for awhile, but no depth.

To be honest I was never a very big fan of this game to begin with, I preferred Secret of Evermore (SoE) far more. But I still appreciated what this game did for its time. However this game hasn't really aged well and this remake keeps all those things that haven't aged well. Good because it's a faithful remake, bad because it's just not as fun nowadays. It's extremely grindy with hard to kill enemies everywhere in the later game.

In order to effectively attack you have to wait for your stamina bar to be at 100%. Otherwise your odds to miss are very high and even if you do hit you do less damage. This means your attacks are always about 2 seconds apart. Not a big deal, SoE does the same thing. The problem with this game is that you constantly miss, and I mean constantly. Both you and enemies have absurdly high evasion rates, and it just gets worse with the enemies in the later game. SoE wasn't nearly this bad. You also have charge bars for each of the weapons. You can go as high as 9 charge levels. Problem is each charge bay takes like 2 seconds. So if you've unlocked a level 5 charge for a weapon it takes about 10 seconds to fully charge it. And then you miss anyway. If it does hit it's much less damage than 5 regular attacks would have been. SoE also had charge levels for the weapons, up to a 3rd charge. But in that game they were actually useful. Basically combat just gets boring in this game, and by the end of the game I was running past enemies So I could just finish this. Killing enemies is not satisfying, especially when you miss more than you hit.

Magic also has charge levels but these are actually useful. They make the spells more powerful. Unfortunately it's also very grindy and only a select few spells are truly useful. For some absurd reason, just like the original, you earn more magic exp when you use a spell in an area with your weapons drawn as opposed to a passive area. Why? What's really dumb is that when you use a spell you have to wait for that character's long animation of activating the spell, then wait for it to hit the enemy and do it's effect. Waste of time usually. SoE at least has a super fast character spell animation.

The game is really glitchy. The AI is honestly the worst AI I have ever seen in a game. If the player controlled character is on one side of a wall fighting an enemy and an AI controlled character is on the other side, the AI will uselessly run against the wall instead of pathing around it. A few times the AI will refuse to attack a boss. This wasn't a problem until the end game when the AI refused to attack the last 2 bosses. I had to find "alternate" means of getting past these bosses because I couldn't do it solo. Sometimes enemies will be invisible and undamageable, but the AI can see them and will try to attack where they should be. When you hit an enemy they will recoil and be stunned. Sometimes these stuns last much longer than they should, and while they're stunned most enemies can receive only 1 additional hit, so this delays combat. I had the game crash on me twice, but thank goodness for autosave, the second truly positive thing in this remake.

The other good thing is the remastered music, but this is obviously personal preference. In my opinion the original music was nothing special, unlike SoE's music which is amazing. You can switch to the original music if you want to. But the new music is actually really good and was honestly the best part of the game. The new voice acting really isn't bad, but it was unnecessary. I feel the new graphics, while nice, weren't needed either and they should've simply done a slight update of the original pixel art which was so much more fun to look at.

In the end the original game was never that great to me and this remake does nothing to change that and what little charm the original had is taken out. A waste of money at $40 usd, wait for a heavy sale, or better yet play the original. You'll just likely regret wasting your time with this version.

I've written reviews for the previous 2 episodes. Basically if you enjoyed those you will probably love this new episode too. Unfortunately there isn't really any naughty stuff in this episode, mainly because it would go against the personality of Phillip who is embarrassed by such things.

But the amount of interaction combos is off the charts in this episode! Not only can you explore the outside areas found in episode 2, but as you return the animals to the gym certain screens outside involving the groups of kids will change and develop. This was a nice addition.

Buy this episode if you enjoyed the previous ones!

After many long years we finally get new crpg Baldur's Gate content. This content takes place immediately after the end of Baldur's Gate 1 (you automatically start SoD if you own it) and leads up to directly before the beginning of BG2. So is it worth it? Simply put, yes. It took me 30+ hours to do all I could.

What about the SJW stuff? Vastly overblown. There's only one npc Mizhena, who offers priest services (which I always ignore), who identifies as trans. You ask about her name then she drops that bit of awkwardly done info. She's easy to ignore. The other instance is a comment Glint makes if you take a specific action in chapter 11 don't ever setup the bwoosh barrel, and instead go through the weak wall to the east later on. I can forgive his out of the blue comment because if you have Safana in your party too it turns into a really funny joke. There was also supposed to be something about Minsc but I never really used him.

Some people have said the writing is bad. Not true, and in some cases I would argue it was better. Like, who cares about the iron shortage in BG1? The story here is compelling and kept me interested to the end, especially the really fun chapter 12 where all the answers are finally given. The side quests were also at least as interesting, if not more so, than most of what you would find in BG1. And if you're wondering, yes nearly all the quests give you different ways to complete them, just like BG is known for.

It is true that relatively speaking the game is linear, but once you take the nostalgia goggles off you will realize that BG1 was just as linear, but the fact was better hidden. Sure in BG1 you had all these different areas you could explore on your way to your main quest destination, but let's be honest, all those areas were nearly empty. There were monsters, and one maybe two npc encounters which were very short and uninteresting. In SoD there are fewer areas but there's more stuff packed into them, which is much more interesting to me.

Something I'm impressed about is that even after all these years they managed to get almost all the old voice actors/actresses back to reprise their roles. More than that they expanded on some of the characters like Safana, and the relationship between Khalid and Jaheira. I also found the new characters to be interesting too with my favorite being Glint. And there are so many random character interestions between your party, something that rarely happened in BG1.

If you enjoyed BG1 and want more then you aren't likely to be disappointed with SoD. I'm glad I didn't listen to the naysayers and bought this (on sale for $10). Don't forget you can import your SoD character into BG2!

Disclaimer: I got into the beta and so received this game for free. I was never asked to make any sort of review and thus am reviewing it of my own free will.

This is a game where you use monster girl cards to battle your enemies. Battles take place on a 3x7 grid, where the left 3x3 grid is yours to freely place any card, and the right 3x3 grid is the enemy's. The cards represent a unit which means when you place the card on the board the unit appears. All units travel on the same row they are placed and cannot change rows. Your goal is to get any unit to the other side next to your enemy's base thereby damaging it by 1, regardless of the unit. At the end of your turn all your units move forward by 1 (except for newly placed units unless they have a certain ability). There are melee units, range, healers, and buffers which raise the attack of the first unit in front of them. You have mana which is needed to place cards and regenerates by 3 every time it's your turn. Placing cards of the same aura in a row is a must use tactic because of the great bonuses it gives. These battles are fun and tend to vary wildly depending on what cards you and the enemy use. This is really the only reason to play the game, therefore if battles don't look interesting then you probably should pass on this game because the story is forgettable.

The story is simplistic and not really that interesting until about the halfway mark. Something bad happens that threatens the world, so you have to go to the different cities to get a certain item before the villain does. Sometimes they agree and give it to you, other times they understandably don't give it to you so the villain comes and takes it just like you told them would happen. I found the characters uninteresting and the dialogue underwhelming; it's not bad by Compile Heart/IFI standards but not as good as say the Neptunia games (which aren't very good either in this regard compared to other JRPG games like Tales Of...).

How the gameplay works outside of battles is you have points you can move between on a map. You don't actually control a character and have them walk around. Moving to the different points on the map will initiate a battle, start a story event, give you an item, give you a card or card pack, give money, or give rub points.

Speaking of rub points, that's how you upgrade your cards. It's a minigame type thing where you click with the mouse or controller button on the picture of the card you are upgrading. It's best to look up a Youtube video of it... On pc it's rather pointless and just a waste of time. A skip button or something would be nice instead of an item you have to buy with real money (you can find it ingame but it's very rare). This game was originally on the Vita which had a touchscreen which makes this minigame have a little more sense there where you are rubbing the girls with your actual finger instead of a mouse pointer. Pro tip: use an ahk script (Google it, it's a safe and legit program) which causes you to rapidly click with a toggle. I'll link the script I use at the end of this review. Your click finger and mouse button will thank you. Also, when you upgrade your cards the girls lose more and more clothes :D, but nudity is never shown :(.

The problem with "upgrading" cards is that it's often not an upgrade at all. Attack and health will go down in favor of a useless skill or an ability you don't care for. However you can pass an ability from one card to another by fusing it with an already placed card of the same type. So that weak card that has awesome abilities (counterattack)? Fuse it with a strong card that has high attack and health and create an unstoppable unit!

Many cards will have skills on them. Skills cost mana to use and are automatically used when you place a card (but not when you fuse it with another card). So if you have 5 mana, a card that needs 3 mana to summon with a 2 mana skill, that card will use 5 mana when placed. It doesn't matter if the skill has no effect, it gets used anyway. And 9/10 times the skill will do nothing for you thus wasting mana. On the sort of plus side if you don't have the mana for the skill it won't get used. Therefore it's advised to place those cards when you have low mana so you don't waste it with worthless skills. I have no idea why they designed the game like this, fortunately the enemy is bound by the same rule.

+Positive
+Battles are tons of fun and really the only reason to play this game.
+The music is nice as is usual for Compile Heart/IFI games.
+The card art is great, especially the newly uncensored cards.
+Plays well with either K&M or controller.

+-Neutral
+-The story and characters are nothing special.

-Negative
-Online multiplayer was not included for some reason. A real shame.
-Being unable to NOT use the skills on your cards thus saving you precious mana.
-The AI cheats just a little bit because in the mid game at the start of every match they always place certain cards that have skills which increase their mana, and in the late game they start also using cards that decrease your mana, always at the start. You too will be able to get those cards after you beat the final boss.
-Not a fan of the microtransactions to get rare cards using real money. It's not needed or anything and is easily ignored so that at least is good.
-You can't increase the resolution beyond your desktop's native res.

I've played lots of Tower Defense games and this is a fun one with some interesting twists on the genre you don't normally see. The developers are best known for their isometric run and gun shooters and this is their first foray into the TD genre and the influence of their previous games are clearly shown, both for good and bad. I'm assuming you already know what TD games are so I can skip the lengthy explanation of their basic designs.

+Positive
+There is a mechanic that as far as I'm aware is unique to TD games: you must periodically spend earned in game money to reload your soldier's ammo. This is a controversial game mechanic to some who prefer more relaxed TDs where you place your soldiers (towers) and sit back and relax. I however find this mechanic exciting because you must constantly pay attention to what is going on, keeping you involved and alert. Forgetting to reload a soldier's weapon can cost you the game, but to help with that you can queue up multiple reloads if you have the money to spare. If it's a mission where money is tight there is strategy involved in deciding on the fly which soldier should get a reload first.
EDIT: Version 1.0.3 added the ability to toggle auto reload, found under game options.

+There are 7 different soldiers, each soldier can equip 3 weapons specific to them and you can switch between those weapons after the soldier has been placed. You get more weapons by using earned money from the end of missions to buy supply crates (only the most expensive crate is worth it due to the guaranteed legendary).

+As an example, the Swat soldier uses shotguns and you can find multiple different kinds of shotguns, where the better it is the more it costs to place and reload. Even if you have a god-tier weapon it's not economical to use it early game because it's so expensive. Each weapon has different levels of rarity for it: normal, rare, unique, and legendary. The better the rarity the more powerful it is and the cheaper it is to reload.

+You can train your soldiers using earned money to increase their level which increases certain stats like damage, firing rate, range, and more. Each level increase also gives a skill point to further increase their stats in their uninteresting skill "tree".

+As you kill enemies they will sometimes drop money and materials which you must click to obtain. You can get more materials by recycling weapons you don't want. You then use these materials to upgrade the weapons you do want to slightly increase a few of their stats.

+There are 35 missions with each one having an easy, normal, hard, and expert difficulty for lots of replayability. Expert brings more and different waves of enemies. There are also 7 optional survival missions where you have to survive for as long as you can.

+-Neutral
+-The game is very grind heavy because the missions get hard fast. You are expected to replay older missions to earn money to upgrade your soldiers and buy supply crates.

+-There are a lot of reused assets and copy paste maps from Alien Shooter 2. Same music, same enemy sprites, many of the same maps. At least they're being used for a different type of game, but I would have liked new stuff.

-Negative
-There are no graphics options of any kind except the option to play windowed and to have green blood (instead of red). It's true a potato could run this game, but still.

-Sometimes while in a mission there is input lag when I tell my soldiers to reload. Generally not a big deal but is still annoying. If this gets patched you can expect me to make a note of it here.

Closing thoughts
If you like Alien Shooter, tower defense games, and the reloading mechanic isn't an immediate turnoff, then give this game a shot as you will probably enjoy it!

I got this game as part of a 28 game bundle for $1 and it's still not worth it. I'm a connect 4 expert having played and studied how to play perfectly. I find connect 4 to be very fun both against people who are wholly unpredictable and AI that is programmed to play perfectly. This game fails on both counts.

There is no online multiplayer whatsoever, so you must rely on having other people with you in person, in which case why not break out the actual boardgame which is more fun? There is a mode for up to 4 people to play at the same time, but I don't know anyone who likes connect 4 to try it out with.

The AI is abysmal. Even on the hardest difficulty it isn't close to being able to play perfectly, and will make the same mistakes every time allowing me to never lose. There are free programs out there that sport perfect AIs such as TitOT or my favorite and the best Vianiato.

What is this perfect play I speak of? Whoever goes first if playing perfectly can win 100% of the time. Depending on the moves 2nd player makes you must make the correct counter moves or risk losing. For example the first perfect move for the 1st player is to go in the middle. Your ultimate goal as 1st player is to get a trap on an odd row while preventing 2nd player from also getting an odd trap. If you do this you will win. If you fail to get an odd trap and 2nd player gets an even trap you will lose. I could go on much further into tactics and details but I don't want to bore.

Basically this game is a disgrace to connect 4, don't waste your time.

In this review I discuss two things: the game itself and the business practices of Gearbox. My negative rating is due to the poor business practices of Gearbox and does not mean in any way that I think what actually is here is bad. I love Duke Nukem and I enjoyed the 5th episode and the cool features this release has. But...

The problem with this release is that it's clearly a cash grab, not-so-subtly confirmed by Randy Pitchford himself (CEO of Gearbox) via various tweets (more on that later). To concisely put it, the new episode is awesome, the additional features and graphics are pretty cool, but this is missing 3 expansions found in the now removed Megaton edition. The missing expansions perhaps aren't a big deal, but a complete edition of DN3D which will include those expansions, the 5th episode, and more, has practically been confirmed by Randy to one day be made. So what does that make this? A cash grab.

Ignoring the business practices of Gearbox, how is the new episode?
The new episode features 7 main levels and a secret level created by the original level designers of DN3D, also the guy who did the original music is back! That's pretty amazing to be honest. Read About their thoughts for each of the levels, including the interesting tidbit that each level took approximately 2 months to make:
http://www.gearboxsoftware.com/2016/09/a-look-at-the-new-duke-nukem-maps-with-allen-h-blum-iii-and-richard-levelord-gray/

The new levels are really well done, and fairly tough too I think. They aren't as compact but are bigger and more spread out because they don't have to deal with hardware limitations like they did 20 years ago. The new incinerator gun is op; ammo is plentiful, it holds 99 shots, and the shots 1 hit kill the regular enemies and do massive damage to the others. It sucks against enemies that can't be set on fire though. The new firefly enemies are annoying (in a good way), but they tend to be glitchy because sometimes when you shoot them the shots don't register. It's nice seeing completely new areas and artwork. I also really like the new music too. Basically it's a worthy addition to Duke Nukem and deserves to be the official 5th episode. My only complaint is that we got just 1 new enemy.

More info on the new features, please.
The game has a true 3d render which you can toggle on and off (the original render was 2d sprites which stretched when you looked up and down). The rewind feature from the old DN3D release on consoles is finally on pc. When you die you can rewind all the way to the beginning of the game and any point in between and start over from whatever point you choose. Really cool! I'm a big fan of developer commentary and some of the things they have to say are interesting, I just wish there was a lot more. I'm not a big fan of the re-recorded Duke voice lines, fortunately you can toggle the legacy lines back on.

Ok, so where's the proof this is a cash grab?
It's all straight from the horse's mouth, Randy Pitchford. Here are tweets where he mentions a definitive edition:
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/772293585551003648
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/772249981281370112
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/780420743959973888

Here is where he tells you the only reason to buy this game is if you want to play the 5th episode as soon as possible, like I did, and assuming you don't already own DN3D:
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/780903766908280832
The difference is when a company like Bethesda is going to make a complete edition they don't remove expansions for sale, release a new expansion, then tell you if you want the old expansions along with the new expansion in one package with some more goodies then you'll have to wait and buy the complete edition later.

Here he suggests waiting for a sale:
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/780903870646013952
Yes everyone knows almost all games get a sale eventually, but as a developer it's bad business to tell your potential customers to wait for one. Plus I already told him I bought it. Reading comprehension deficiency?

Here he confirms there will be no dlc, free or paid:
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/773245714017038336
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/780252759635349504
I guess it's good he won't try to nickel and dime us by making us pay for what should be there, but why can't the missing expansions be free dlc?
https://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/780423178715664384
If only we knew what you know so we could understand these baffling business decisions.

TL;DR
Duke Nukem is as great as ever. If it weren't for this being an incomplete edition due to a feeble reason then this would get all my thumb ups. If you don't care about the missing expansions or the reasoning why they aren't here and you want brand new Duke then by all means buy this game! I want more Duke so I bought this despite knowing everything here before release.

I'm a big fan of the previous game Human Revolution. I feel it came close to capturing the awesomeness of the original Deus Ex. This game I think I can say the same thing about, although it does most things better but a few others worse than Human Revolution.

Positives
The side missions are far superior for starters. Even better than the main story, with their only downside being that they are understandably short. The overall lore learning is still just as great. Dialogue is better I feel. Nearly all random npcs will have their own 2 unique lines of dialogue, in contrast to the previous games where said dialogue was often repeated among the random civs. There's also more named npcs you can have conversations with.

The overall gunplay is better. You can mod them as usual, but now some of the weapons have different ammo types. There are regular, EMP, and armor piercing. It doesn't make much of a difference in the long run, but variety is nice. There are a few less weapons, but it's not a huge deal, as long as the next game gives us more. You can also upgrade weapons, but with the exception of ammo capacity it didn't seem to make much difference.

Choices matter much more in this game. You will see more reactions to your choices from characters, including certain side missions being available based on your choices. The ending is also better because you get to see the consequences of a few of your choices, which is much better than Human Revolution's generic endings.

I like how energy is a single bar instead of multiple cells. It can regenerate the whole bar too, but as usual using certain augs drains the max value of the bar.

The new augments are really cool but they're also really overpowered. Especially the nanoblade. It 1 shots most enemies at a huge distance and is nearly silent. Get the explosive upgrade and it can 1 shot multiple enemies close together. Titan Shield is fun because it makes you nearly invincible. Icarus Dash is fun too.

From what little I've played Breach mode is pretty fun. You go on mini-missions in a VR type thing and earn credits and better gear. It's separate from the main game, but you can unlock Praxis Kits which can be redeemed on a single save file in the main game.

Neutral
Jensen is apparently an alcoholic pill popper. Alcohol, pills, and hypostims are the only way to restore health. There's like 10 different kinds of alcohol but no food like candy bars. It's just funny.

Nothing against the characters, I just didn't find myself connecting with them like I did in Human Revolution. I liked interacting with Malik, Pritchard, and others. I didn't really care for anyone here. More opinion than anything really as the characters here were fine otherwise.

Negatives
The one that will probably bother the most people is the fact that there's only 1 hub in the game, Prague. Human Revolution had 2. I think this game makes up for it because Prague is so HUGE. I spent about 15 hours exploring it and doing side missions before ever entering TF29 headquarters. Still, location variety would have been nice.

I'm not a fan of the fact that health will fully regenerate eventually. There's even augs you can get that make it regen faster and such.

Stuff you've probably heard as negatives, but I (mostly) disagree with
People have claimed the game is short, taking 20 hours to do everything. I suppose that's true if you do almost no exploring and sprint from objective to objective. However, it took me a solid 45 hours to beat the game and I looked nearly everywhere and did all but 1 side mission.

People say the story is incomplete. While this is sorta true, it's not what you're probably thinking. What needs to get resolved is resolved (essentially you save the day). But the overall big shadowy bad guys who were behind it all are still out there, and that's what is implied the next game will be about; you going after the men in the shadows.

Yes there are microtransactions in a single player game. You can pay real money for Praxis Kits and credits. Yes these items are valid only for the one save file. But the cash shop is extremely easy to ignore and not in the least bit necessary for the game. When I beat the game I had used a ton of Praxis I earned and had 60,000 credits built up. You can also pay real money for these circuit things in Breach which lets you buy stuff. I don't know if you can unlock them yourself. I wish this game didn't have microtransactions, but it's not bad enough to say you'll never buy the game or give it a negative rating.

The game did have a rough launch, but it should come as no surprise to people when there's thousands of different system configuration combinations, but the devs continue to release patches. I personally had no issues. If you have issues when a brand new game launches, give the devs a week or two to fix things before you leave negative ratings.

Closing thoughts
If you liked Human Revolution you will most likely enjoy this game too. Don't let the haters turn you off, or the relatively low Steam review rating give you the mistaken impression this is a mediocre game because it's not. Those negative reviews were from people who had the misfortune to run into trouble when the game first launched, but most of the issues have been corrected while their negative reviews will always be there.

Hopefully we won't have to wait so long for the next game because I can't wait!
