Picking up the pace again!

The first episode of this series left me plain out amazed & impressed. After I played that part I immediately bought all the other episodes. The second episode on the other hand... It wasn't bad or anything, but in comparison to the first it was slow. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily but... in comparison it felt a bit weird to me.

And then comes Episode 3: Chaos Theory, this is once again an amazing chapter in the saga. Now that Max and Chloe are really coming together and bonding again the girls are finally ready to try to find out what's been going on around Blackwell academy. And the new chemistry between them is very well shown within this episode, everything just feels much more natural all of a sudden. And the pace is also raises a nudge ;)

Get ready for Max to discover an even bigger mystery than "merely" being able to rewind time, but always be careful what you wish for because... you may just get it!

An easy 2 thumbs up for me. I finished this episode way too quickly and I was very much tempted to do an immediate replay.

The story continues... sort off...

Episode 1 was a very filled chapter because it introduced us to Max (the protagonist of the story) and her life at the University of Blackwell. And let's not forget the discovery of Max' secret power where she's able to rewind time!

Following up on such a rollercoaster is quite challenging per definition and I think episode 2 did a good job in the overall. Obviously they had to considering that this is one of the first chapters we had to pay for. However... there are some things which I think could have been done a little bit better. For example... Max decides to trust her old friend Chloe and she tells her about her ability to rewind time. She even proves this by witnessing some events, rewinding time and then telling Chloe what is about to happen. So far, so good.

Inconsistency in the story?

Chloe is quite enthusiastic and already fantasizes about controlling the world. But for now she settles for Max and herself shooting at some bottles. This should be good because with Max' new power they will never run out of bullets, right?

Well... that's where I think the game somewhat creates a weird inconsistency. Sure, Max rewinds a few times after Chloe took the shot, but when she does so then Chloe would also forget about ever taking the shot. Ergo: while Max may experience the gun getting fired and then getting "reloaded" because of her time shift, Chloe would simply experience them shooting the gun and nothing more.

It's not wrong or anything, but I thought the whole thing was a bit weirdly executed.

In conclusion...

Although this chapter started a bit slow and required some time to really kick in it was a very interesting story nonetheless. What I also really enjoyed was seeing that I actually got confronted with some of the results from my earlier choices. So, some choices which I made in Episode 1 now actually got addressed. Which I think is cool because this makes it a lot more believable that your choices do indeed matter.

This is a definitely thumbs up from me!

I hate this review....

This game is a cash grab. Nothing more or less. And despite all the negative comments about Steam going on you should thank Steam (aka Valve) for giving us this amazing platform because that makes it obvious what is going on. I mean... when the Steam product page tells me that I can add all available DLC for "only" E 1509,73 (European notation)... E 1500 to get a full game?! Are you guys out of your mind?! What the *censored* are you guys smoking up there?!

More reasons to love Steam: you can see that while I am writing all of this I am well within my right to give Koei Techmo the finger and request a refund. And this is where the 'hate' in my review comes from. I'm not going there because....

This game is awesome!

It honestly is. There is so much good stuff about this game... the atmosphere is awesome, the controls and ditto tutorials which help you learn all the combos in the deepest of details idemditto. And then there's the atmosphere....

Down with PC culture!

Male vs. male? np! Female vs. female? np! (fe)male vs. opposite sex?! Sound the alarm! (though I suppose for some people female vs. male isn't a problem as long as the female wins of course... because 'equality').

This game does away with that and I love it for it. Male or female against the opposite sex? No problem, and it's even a thing in the tutorial, I love it.

And that also brings me back to my dislike for this game... It is SO good, honestly, but... if you start a new game or training mission you get the option to dress your character. Most stuff is locked, which made me come to believe that you could unlock all of that with playing and following missions.

bzzzzt

The only way to unlock stuff is to buy DLC. Yah.. errr, no. as such a major thumbs down.

Sure, there are season passes, I'll pass on those too and so should you! See: it's obvious that the game developer has 0 respect for Steam. I can purchase a season pass as if it were DLC but I cannot check what is included, not even for the passes that already expired. And I'm sure us Steam users know about packages, right? Click "Package info" and you can immediately see what you're going to get.

And once again: E 1500 (= "fifteen hundred") euro's for all DLC?!!!

NO game is worth that much.

If you want to invest your money into a good fighting game.. then this isn't it. And it honestly pains me to write this because the game itself, once again, is honestly plain out awesome....

But I cannot justify a cash grab like this, this is plain out absurd.

Amazing atmosphere!

This game is plain out amazing, if you haven't already then definitely do yourself a favor and grab Episode 1 (which is available for free!) so you can experience this masterpiece for yourself...

What is it about? It's an story telling / adventure game. You play the role of 'Max', a young girl who just turned 18 and who went back to her birth town to study at a university which specializes in art. Max passion is photography and she hopes to turn that passion into a daytime job.

During class she suddenly gets a bizarre vision and when she comes back to her senses she notices that something is off. Later on, during a rather intense moment, she freaks out and suddenly... manages to rewind time?!

Choices, choices...

The (computer) animation and the environments themselves are gorgeous. From the moment I saw the title screen I was an immediate believer. While following the story line you'll come across many situations which will pose challenges for you. And this is where your newly discovered powers will come in quite handy, because when you rewind time you'll keep memories of everything you learned during that moment.

Someone asks you their name and you don't know? Simple: when (if) they tell you then you can simply rewind time and when you're asked the question again you can answer them correctly.

Don't be fooled: this doesn't mean that there won't be any challenges anymore, because every decision has certain consequences. And sometimes... it's simply an issue of choosing between lesser evils, which can be quite tricky at times.

And what did other players do?

I know this is a well known concept but at the end you can see which choices you made and how many other players did the same or picked another approach. But here also comes the fun part: unlike some other similar gametypes this one doesn't force you to do anything. So... at the end of a chapter you will most likely also come across options and choices which you may have completely missed! Another title I once played only had predetermined choices and you'd go through every one of them. Not here!

In conclusion

This is one heck of a game adventure! First chapter free I said? Could have fooled me! The quality seriously doesn't suggest that this is a freebie: I started playing, I got completely sucked into the story and Max' persona (= the main protagonist) and before I knew I had completed chapter 1 and we were 2 hours further in real life.

I really enjoy how Max is pretty cute yet in every way just an ordinary girl (apart from the time manipulation of course) who encounters realistic issues like bullies, forgotten friends, an aspiring boyfriend (?) and troubles at school. But without overdoing it.

Oh well, I guess playing is believing. And you can, for free! :)

If you enjoy playing TerraTech then I think you owe it to yourself (and the devs ;)) to grab this as well.

The music is honestly pretty fun, easy on the ears (depending what you're listening to) and well, you're also supporting the developers which I personally think is also well deserved.

If you grabbed the DLC then you can find the files (both mp3 and wav format) in your game folder. Just use the Steam library to get there.

DLC doesn't get any more honest than this!

I quote from the store page: "We only recommend this for players who want to see the latest stuff we're working on and get deeper access to the development process, while supporting the team.". Dunno about you but I think that's a very honest approach from the devs.

Research & Development

As you probably know several games provide access to their development branch. Simply check the game properties in your Steam library and head over to the 'Beta' tab to set it up. Of course, the problem with playing with beta's is that anything goes. It's very well possible that you may end up with a version of the game that doesn't run (properly) on your PC at all. Sure, it could be fun to keep track of all the latest & greatest stuff in the game, but if you can't play the game due to bugs... then what?

Well, if you want to get access to the latest but don't want to risk your game crashing & dashing then this is the DLC for you!

It basically adds a "second" Creative mode with the main difference that you won't be restricted to blocks which are actually in the game (the campaign mode) but you'll get access to everything. Even stuff which the developers are currently working on and hasn't made it into the game just yet. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. And maybe it crashes your entire tech, who knows ;)

But you won't have to worry about your entire game crashing because of unstable betas, which is just perfect for me :)

In conclusion

Even though you may not really need it I still highly recommend to pick up on this DLC, especially if you're getting plenty of hours into Terratech. It's fun to just build without restraints and it can also be very interesting to see all the new cool things that may make it into the game.

Not to mention that you're also supporting the developers, which I also think is important here (did you know that Terratech is still being actively developed?).

If you love your tech, you'll love this DLC :)

Fun, but also frustrating

Terratech is a nice game where you build your own vehicle(s) (called "tech") to explore and mine resources. Defend yourself against other (hostile) techs and once you defeat an enemy try to scavenge any parts that they might have dropped which you can then add to your own tech to hopefully improve on the design and make yourself stronger and better than before.

It may take getting used to but it can definitely be a lot of fun.

Though there's unfortunately also a frustrating part....

Campaigning, creative or just messing around...

The game has several game modes which allow you to play it in different ways.
  • Campaign is the default "survival" mode in which you need to do missions, level up, improve on your tech and try to become the best prospector in the game.
  • Creative mode is where you can build anything you'd like without any restraints such as a need for money or a specific level to unlock stuff.
  • R&D. It's roughly the same as creative mode with the difference that you'll also get access to blocks and parts that aren't officially part of the game yet. So keep in mind that things could break ;) Also: this mode is only available through purchase of a DLC (which I shall review later).
The problem though is that the campaign mode isn't really balanced out which can easily leave you frustrated and maybe wanting to quit playing. No rage quits, but simply that feeling that you're not accomplishing anything and are only wasting your time doing pointless chores.

No storage or inventory.... (yet!)

See, you start out as a very small tech (basically your first tech consists of the base block ('cab'), a few default build blocks, some wheels, a drill and a laser cannon) and as you progress through the game you can destroy other hostile tech. If you're lucky they'll drop several items which you can then use for your own build. So far so good...

The problem though is that it won't be too long before you end up with an excess in blocks. Too many wheels to place, no room left for any of those lasers you found, etc. But if you just got rewarded with a whole collection of new blocks then it would be a waste to leave them behind. So sometimes this means that you'll have no other choice but to completely take your tech apart and rebuild it from the ground up. Even if you already took into consideration that you should leave enough room for possible new blocks; you will still run into this situation where there's free connections left so... break down & rebuild! ...again.

That can be fun the first time you do this but it becomes a chore soon enough. Why can't I store my blocks somewhere?!

Well, that's because "inventory blocks" (not their real name) are level restricted. So if you're only level 1 or 2 then you can forget about storing your blocks, which I think is a seriously flaw in the current game design. Sure, there are some ways to get around this. For example: buy a new 'base block' ("cab") and thus build a 2nd tech which you could use as some kind of block collector. The only problem with that is that it's not easy to switch between techs: there's no shortcut button or something, you literally have to double-click on the other tech. So if your other tech is behind a few trees, a hill or too far away then you can also forget about switching.

And as said: that gets frustrating because it's not much fun to have a pile of blocks which you can't use, and once you got hold of your second tech again the blocks could have already despawned. "yaaay...."

Despite its flaws still a lot of fun!

So yah, this game is far from perfect. Annoyances during the campaign, non-existent (official) documentation, etc, etc.

But honestly? If you look past all that then you could easily end up getting sucked right in. Try and collect all that new tech, build bizarre machines which can overpower your enemies and once you got hold of the basic setups get ready to discover even more bizarre techs!

And also never underestimate the things you can learn from experimenting with Creative or even R&D!

In conclusion....

This game takes getting used to. No joke: after having played for half an hour or so I was certain: this isn't for me so I requested a refund. I then re-visited the store page and went through some community posts, looked up the game again on Youtube and then changed my mind: let's try this again.

Well.. now (time of writing) I'm an easy 7 hours into the game. SO they must be doing something right ;)

When 'Space Invaders' combines with anime girls...

This game is awesome and can get seriously addictive. It brings back the feel of the good ole 'Space Invaders' game and combines that with an extremely cheesy and silly "story"line in which you protect giant anime girls from weird alien forces.

Of course that's not all ;)

I mean, it's not your fault if the girls clothing gets in the way between you and shooting down some aliens, so if that results in the girl losing her clothes then surely that's merely some minor collateral damage, right? :D

Boobs... or bosses?!

As you might have guessed: trying to get the girl undressed by shooting her clothes is actually part of the game (not necessarily your "mission"). Keep it up until you have removed all but her underwear and then the real challenge will begin. The game will warn you about an excessive intrusion in privacy (lol!) after which the end boss appears. Which can leave you with a dilemma because.... are you going to shoot the boss or will you try to remove the girls underwear as well?!

Of course in the end you should try and do both for the most optimal results, and for the sake of "science" of course :P

If you do manage to remove all the girls clothes then you can take a picture afterwards (also for scientific purposes obviously) which you can then view back later in the gallery.

This game is hilarious

After you successfully finished a level your bear character gets to meet up with the girl (now in a normal size) and the chat is usually way over the top and plain out absurd. I love this! First our 'hero' wants to draw "naked big busted girls" and luckily for you the girl you just met is more than eager to pose. Just too bad that the end drawing isn't exactly state of the art, but ey... you try drawing something with bear paws, eh? :) Or how about a photo shoot? Just too "bad" that our hero only seems interested in photographic b00bies and doesn't care for much else ;)

Fun for casual players as well!

What I also really enjoyed was that you could make the game as difficult or easy as you want to, so you're in full control. Which I think makes it all the more fun if all you want is a bit of silly "shoot and strip 'm up" kind of gameplay :)

Nothing over the top, but it can be!

This game does show some n00dies but nothing 'over the top' so to speak. Sure you get to see all the girls "curves" but it's not exactly a realistic nude girl, you only see her body shape. Of course this could leave some of us wondering.... what about the science?!

Well.... I was amazed to learn how easy it is to tell the game to go all out. Simply add an empty (text) file in your games data folder called "nude.patch" and guess what's going to happen next? ;) You'll find this folder in the game program folder which in its turn can be found in the Steam apps 'common' folder. Just use your Steam library to get there (right click on the game, "Manage" => 'browse local files' and you should be set).

In conclusion....

This game is awesome, a very nice way to kill some time and work on your "science" :)

A friend of mine gave me this game (thanks again!) and in the mean time I now own the whole collection. Two thumbs up!

The cat(girl) is out of the bag!

I'm really becoming a fan of Cute Anime Girls (the developer ;)) because they manage to make fun and innocent games which are very affordable. And yes, you'll probably come across some weird English here and there but it's easily overlooked. This is about playing after all :)

The story continues!

For those unaware there is actually a story here (stop staring at those b00bies already! ;)). You learn the art of magic, in specific magic which can help you remove your opponents defenses. In other words: you remove their clothes. And fortunately for you all the females you get to meet think this kind of magic is awesome and they're really happy when you cast your spells on them :)

Of course with magic they refer to playing Candy Crush and the more points you gather the more clothes you'll remove from your "opponents".

In the first version of the game you get yourself a catgirll, learn about college and you're basically busy amusing the females.

In this second version however there is a problem! All students get a free maid who can help them. But unfortunately there isn't much room in your house, so where should the maid sleep?! Well, luckily for you she's more than happy to share your bed, just make sure you don't make your cat girl jealous :)

Comes with free adult DLC!

Are you an adult? Then you're in luck because there's a free DLC which will get you nude girls in the game. SO now you'll have even more reasons to do your magic on them :)

In conclusion...

Usually sequels aren't as great as the original but in this case I think it's a really well done game. The (silly) story continues, there's plenty of candy crush to be played and just like before there's plenty of replay value here. Can you manage to get three stars on all levels and... maybe also undress the girls completely?

This is really good stuff and I highly recommend this game.

When looking at the price you normally pay for this DLC and the things you get back from it then I cannot recommend buying this. It's not worth the normal price and even with a Steam sale I simply cannot justify this. The best way to get this is probably in a bundle but as soon as you get your hands on Gathering Storm then it will more or less render this one kind of obsolete.

But the main reason I dislike this DLC is because it doesn't necessarily add up to the standard Civilization VI gameplay but it changes it, and in my opinion not for the better. One of the fun things in Civ VI is the interaction between you and other nations. Try to befriend them (or conquer them) but either way you'll have to keep an eye out for politics. Leaders will contact you, ask your permission to send a delegation or ask you to open up your borders to them. These are all essential and fun aspects of the game.

Well, this DLC seems to do away with all this. I was hoping that loyalty bonuses would apply in addition to standard gameplay, but it doesn't. For me personally this DLC takes away too many fun aspects from the game and turns it into something mediocre: relying way to heavily on micromanagement.

In the end the best you can get from this is a few extra other civilizations to play with, but honestly.. that's not worth the price in my book.

As such I don't recommend getting this. Not even during a Steam sale; but maybe in a bundle during a Steam sale but even then you need to think twice because you may easily end up disliking the new gameplay.
