The spiritual successor to Total Annihilation. If you loved playing T.A. back in the day, then you'll feel right at home.

9 out of 10 - A phenomenal RTS game that, in my opinion, is far better than other titans in the genre. It may not have the graphics or popularity that Starcraft does, but the overall mechanics, maps, economy, and general gameplay feel much more polished (please don't @ me). Who wouldn't want to watch 250+ tanks, submarines, gunships, bombers, assault bots, and warships obliterate each other in a tremendously satisfying fashion? Seriously, maybe check out a random 'Let's Play' video on YouTube if you're interested.

My favorite part of this series has always been its base-building experience. Maps in this game are very well-suited for base building, and most offer another layer of fortification - the terrain itself. In my opinion, if you like to play defensively, I think you'll really enjoy this game.

I never particularly cared for the campaign though. Skirmishes are where the fun's at. The AI sometimes behaves in... interesting ways, and as your skills improve, you can adjust the difficulty accordingly. Max AI difficulty too easy? Throw in two or three more of them, vary their modes, and put them on the same team. Awesome.

Side note: I found Supreme Commander 2 a little lackluster for some reason. Also, DO NOT play that on a console--the controls are absolute garbage. PC is the only acceptable platform to play SupCom on, in my opinion.

I've found that the easiest way to use multiplayer is to forward ports. If your stupid ISP has locked down your router (or otherwise prevent you from forwarding ports), you could probably use a VPN that offers stable, low latency connections/servers and built-in port forwarding.

Check out Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance as well. For online multiplayer in Forged Alliance, find the 'Forged Alliance Forever' site and go from there. You'd probably like that if you like this game. Or T.A. (duh).

EDIT: Some folks have encountered stability issues with this game (crashing in the middle of a match, etc). This is supposedly due to memory limitations of 32-bit applications. If you are running a 64-bit OS, this may prove useful: https://sp.zhabite.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=353050087
