I rarely buy day-one games, but after A Way Out and It Takes Two being fantastic co-op games there was never any doubt in my mind about Split Fiction being any less and I'm glad to say I was right. Split Fiction is a fantastic co-op adventure game, an experience that should not be missed.

👍 The good parts:
+Fun and fresh gameplay from start to finish
+Fantastic atmosphere

👎The bad parts:
-The fantasy missions were not as impressive as the sci-fi ones

The premise is simple, you're two fresh writers, Mio and Zoe, who were invited to participate in a new cool tech owned by a rich white CEO(cliche I know) that can make their writings/fantasies a reality. Mio is the introvert and more reserved when it comes to aspects of life while Zoe is the extrovert, the type that thrives on adventure. Naturally, as the experiment begins Mio has her doubts about it all and manages to get stuck in Zoe's "pod" by mistake.

As you can predict, both of their fantasies merge and you will have to progress through each of their own stories throughout the entire game while also dealing with whatever trauma they hid away in their own head. Mio's side is sci-fi while Zoe's is fantasy. From a story point of view as well as gameplay, Mio's side is far better than Zoe's, but I can't blame the devs for this, as in my opinion sci-fi will always be better.

The main story won't really blow your mind, it's a decent Hallmark type of story, with two women dealing with their past and defeating the white evil CEO guy. The stories in their worlds are decent enough, but nothing truly memorable.

Story rating: 7.5/10

As you'd expect from Josef, Split Fiction is a nonstop fun game, "no bullsh.it" as he put it, and I will agree. It doesn't waste your time for one second, it always brings in new fresh mechanics that never overstay their welcome, it has decent difficulty, not too easy not too hard and it's just great.

As I mentioned Mio has the sci-fi worlds and Zoe the fantasy ones. Throughout the story you will go one by one through each of their worlds, Mio's then Zoe's, then Mio's again then Zoe's, and so on. In each world, you will be introduced to new gameplay mechanics for both players from being cyberninjas to flying dragons. Each player's mechanics will work in harmony with one and the other as you need to cooperate to progress through the worlds, facing combat challenges as well as platforming ones.

The main aspect is keeping your entertainment always high up and it does so by always introducing you to new things, for example in the cyberpunk world as you hack and slash enemies, you will also drive an awesome bike over buildings, or at some other point in the game the perspective changes to 2D and now you're basically playing Contra. It has so many gameplay mechanics that it'll blow your mind. If you thought It Takes Two was fun, this takes it to the next level.

Outside of the main zones, you can find some side areas that you can access which teleport you to some even crazier stuff such as becoming a punch of pigs or candy. There's even an optional laser challenge that is absolute insanity on the difficulty scale and you will need a lot of hours and skills to overcome it.

There's more to be said, but it's best to just experience it with someone. Split Fiction is no doubt the definition of the word fun. My only gripe as I mentioned is that I wanted the fantasy worlds to be better.

Gameplay rating: 9/10

I think the audio section is probably the only aspect that is done worse compared to It Takes Two. That game had a phenomenal audio design and soundtrack and even had a level dedicated to music and sound. Sadly in Split Fiction, you will almost never notice any of the songs because they're just not memorable or well-designed to matter which was surprising considering they were made by the same dude.

Voice acting is fine for all the characters, nothing truly amazing or memorable either, and as for the sound effects, they're pretty great in certain levels.

Audio rating: 8/10

You're probably tired of reading this, but the sci-fi levels are awesome on a visual level while the fantasy ones are mostly safe'ish, with nothing truly breathtaking. I mean I'm not sure how the fantasy ones can even compete with a cyberpunk city, or in space running against a dying sun. Flying a bunch of dragons isn't that exciting to me, but I suppose it depends on each person. The level design for all worlds is fantastic and as I mentioned it's always fresh and never gets boring.

It's not a visually demanding game, nor is it the most impressive-looking one, it's your standard UE stuff, but they still managed to do a great job. Furthermore considering the engine, it also runs great, had no crashes and no stutters whatsoever and the performance was decent.

Graphics, performance and tech analysis score: 9/10

If you have someone to play with then there's no reason to avoid the game at any price. We just don't get these kind of experiences very often. Highly recommended.

Fantastic engaging game, constantly different things and mechanics to experience as you progress all while keeping the unique storyline consistent! This is genuinely up there with one of the best games ive ever played, it was hard to exit the game i wanted to keep going! and yet again, really funny easy 100% achievements that pushes a little extra exploration and fun :)

Note: Theres actually a extremely challenging secret level in the game!
