Starship Troopers with Robot Vietnam.

Helldivers II is a game deviating from its predecessor going from top-down shooter to third-person shooter. It is a very fun game so far, only weighed down with some rare crashes and matchmaking issues. Other than that, its a fun game with friends and will sure as ♥♥♥♥ leave more scars on your psyche than Deep Rock Galactic, at least that game reduces friendly fire damage. Here? You can accidentally one-shot your buddy because he peeked his head into your sightline.

It's fun, and it'd be a fair price once some bugs are fixed.

Early Access Review
It's fun, don't get me wrong, but my suspicions were confirmed when the dev began rambling and praising A.I and blatant art theft. There's also seems to be a lot of flipped Unreal assets filling in spaces where there could be some originality. There's good, bad, and ugly with this.

The Good: As for the game itself, it's a fun time killer. Putting "pokemon" to do essentially automated menial labor is a cool idea and the games dark humorous juxtaposition from Pokemon by having these things either be pathetic, cruel, killable, eatable, armed, and in one case horny is unique, even from other creature collection games. There's a solid mix of survival elements to standard rpg elements (and a catch system exactly like Legends: Arceus) that can make the game a unique experience. There's a lot of potential to tap here and it tickles a parody nature that has long persisted in niche areas of gaming fandoms like Pokemon.

The Bad: Unfortunately you can't go gun-ho into the game immediately with a gun, the progression to get to many of the advertised points is very slow and requires a firm grind to give the monkey a machine gun or even ride horseback on a deer you caught. The world, at least so far, is incredibly spaced out and has a "size over matter" feel to it where there can be miles of nothing only spaced out with some groups of the game's titular Pals. The first boss the game tells you to fight doesn't feel like a "first boss" but more-so a mid-game boss, so its not something you can fight right away like what the game's tutorial is telling you to do.

The Ugly: There feels to be a dry sense of creative depravity with this game. Pals looking similar to Pokemon wouldn't have been an issue as the game establishes itself as a parody, however, the dev openly admits to and bragging utilizing A.I art programs lifting from Pokemon art, so there's the discrepancy of plagiarized designs from other talents. (I know some of the designs were made before AI art programs were made, but c'mon man!) It is an abhorrent, creatively dead move that displays a shallow sense of originality, artistic ability, and a lack of moral compass. "Pokemon with Guns" is a funny, yet passing thought you might pitch to friends you're hanging out with, or see as some Dorkly bit, and that's exactly what the dev treats it as. A passing thought. From default and flipped assets from the Unreal Development Kit to plagiarized designs from Game Freak and quite possibly independent artists, its a hollow game that feels like its out there to make a quick buck, which is surprising because I know ive seen gameplay trailers for this at least a few years ago.

I also don't expect this to leave Early Access anytime soon, given their previous game, Craftopia, is currently in its 4th year of Early Access despite it only being estimated for one. There is definitely a sketch feel to this game and the people behind it.

All in all, if you want a good creature collector game that feels somewhat like this one, Play Legends: Arceus, one of the best Pokemon games we got in years from Game Freak. If you lack a Switch, I hear Cassette Beasts is a good title. If you're truly curious about this game, hold on to your treasure and hoist the jolly roger.

UPDATE: As of 1/24 the claim that this game used AI art and stolen models for designs has been disproven so I feel a bit better about the game's success meaning you can purchase this without a judgement lapse, but it still feels like a game that exists for a quick buck. (Some designs still feel plagiarized though.) The price point isn't bad for what its worth, and it is still a solid game at the end of the day. Do note however that a previous entry actively uses AI art as a core game mechanic. Every controversy behind this game dev seems to stem not from a place malicious practice but more-so lack of knowledge behind everything they're doing and Palworld seemed to strike a lottery number with its popularity.

I'll update my entire review if this game makes it out of early access.

I spend more time designing a mech than driving it. Combat's fun and engaging too.

Don't listen to the negative reviews that can't get past the first boss they're incredibly dumb and would rather play a game incorrectly and scream at it than adapt to it.

You play as a giant robot industrializing planets to build a power plant around the sun. As ludicrous as the premise sounds, this game is quite relaxing and can be a mental challenge at times. Highly recommend if you're a fan of games like Factorio or Satisfactory.
