It feels... it feels like...

Remember infdev/alpha Minecraft when you had to pay about $15 USD to play it, then ended up playing for a few hours and suddenly it's 3 AM so you force yourself to go to bed, but while trying to fall asleep you keep thinking to yourself "what else is there to craft" or "is it possible to build this idea I have..."?

Remember your first time going down a dungeon in Morrowind, you encountered ghosts and skeletons that had such powerful attacks that you were chugging potions and fleeing far enough away to give you some breathing room to recover enough to continue your desperate offense toward anything that was hostile and after a few failed attempts you were rewarded with some gems and gold coins that you had to pick up by looking for them on the ground near a burial mound, but may have missed some because it was so dark, yet despite all that danger and risk and inconvenience, the rush of it was exhilarating?

Remember when you were thrown into a familiar yet unknown world in Gothic where you were told almost nothing so you go explore your surroundings a bit only to find a creature that killed you without any effort so you find ways to cheese the really tough enemy in your path or try to look for a new way to progress because the armor and weapons had a big impact on your combat abilities?

Yeah, those feelings are back!

A perfect game for those times that you wish to play something modern that is short and casual. Highly recommended even with the knowledge that we probably won't ever know the full story.

Despite not having a conclusive ending (yet?), this short moral and ethical dilemma keeps you engaged enough with its mix of point-and-click exploration sprinkled with some hacking mini-game puzzles and then transition into some turn-based combat encounters.

None of the gameplay is truly challenging, but it still requires minimal strategical thought processing to progress. While the story can be rough and full of more questions than answers, it is a great form of storytelling that makes you want to poke and prod further along to find out more.

I do not know yet if any of my dialogue choices made a difference in the outcome of my play though since I have only played it once, but the choices I made still felt like they carried some amount of weight as you progress to figure who and what is going on.

Some dialogue choices made me stop and think before I committed to them, made me question my ethics and how much information is too much to share with characters you barely know and how certain are you that you can trust characters that you just met? I doubt this was an intentional design choice as these questions mean that the character development is not quite fleshed out and you are just dropped in the thick of it, but that feels this was mostly because we do not know what Chapter 2 and 3 have in store...

...If those chapters are ever released, that is.

The art style and graphics are fantastic and really feel convey that feeling of a futuristic dystopian city. If you can pick this up on sale for a few bucks, it is worth giving it a shot.

Recipe for 1 Void Bastard:

  • 1/4 part DOOM
  • 1/4 slice System Shock
  • 1/4 chunk FTL
  • 1/4 piece Binding of Isaac

Garnish with addictive gameplay loop. Play as desired.

This game appears to be a game made for kids. Why am I playing as a clay stick person with a wooden sword?

This combat is really basic and does not feel challenging. Why are there references to pop culture and memes?

There are coins to collect. A MacGuffin? How creative... Oh, there are puzzles now? OK, not too hard.

I think I'm stuck now... wait, a hidden chest?

I wonder if I can get up there... oh, another hidden chest.

Ha, found a way to exploit the terrain to bypass this section.... hidden chest...

This puzzle is trickier than the last. Does this go here? Can I do that? Let me try this... oh! Hidden chest!

I've collected all these coins, think I should checkout that vendor I saw earlier. This dude wants some barrels? Think I saw one back over here... HIDDEN CHEST!

How do I get that chest I see over there? OK, let go back to this area. Let's try this here... ah! Hidden chest! Now to get that other I was working on getting.

This gun is sweet. Pew Pew! Bunch of enemies to shoot! PEW PEW!

OK, I shoot this, then activate this, jump up here and... HIDDEN CHEST!

Dang, just died. Let's try that again anyway... Not sure, maybe I need some upgrade? I don't have enough coins. Let go check somewhere else... oh, hidden chest!

This game is great, I am a kid again.

An interactive representation of what it's like to be the NPC that keeps killing you repeatedly in other games after encountering the "Game Over" screen and the NPC just laughs in your face while doing it. This is it. Only, you're that NPC.

So much detail, which can go easily unnoticed, packed into a wild, crazy ride. Make sure to take it all in and enjoy every bit of it. Perhaps more than a couple playthroughs too.

Fun, quirky, nostalgic and a genre that is lacking similar, high quality, crafted-with-care-and-love games to fit this style of gameplay on PC. Constantly being updated and improved, this is what indie games are all about.

Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing fans will feel right at home.

A light philosophical approach to a sociopolitically driven age of discrimination and racism, masked with a privately funded corporate war. If nothing about this screams how humanity has not changed, then that is because it never will.

This is a perfect example of a very bad first impression.

Coming directly from playing the first two games in the series, this one felt out of place and did not explain the giant leap of the old west setting to the modern-day world of the Mexican cartels. If you wait it out, the connection between them appears to be there, but it is not exactly obvious.

It started as a generic, cheesy, and unbelievable story that eventually became a somewhat tolerable and almost interesting one that will end up being forgotten when compared to other story-driven first person shooters. Gameplay mechanics are nothing new and very generic. Shoot, cover, rinse and repeat with the straight forward driving sections to mix up the gameplay a bit.

If you stick with it to the end, you can see some design choices that carried over from the others in the series, which they attempted to improve upon, but ultimately ended up with mixed results.

This game was clearly made for a co-op experience and it is strongly recommended to play it that way if at first you find it really hard to have fun.

It is not a very good game, but it is also not a completely bad one either. If you give it a chance, it can grow on you. With its equal amount of shining and eye-rolling moments, it is an underrated title.
