It says what it does on the box and it is great fun, enough said.

This game is not good enough, or finished enough, to warrant how many microtransactions it boasts.

Every few years I am reminded this game exists and every time I am pleasantly surprised. Easy to pick up, decent depth, and beautiful spritework.

Gave this DLC a lot of time to breathe before I made my mind up, and while there are things I adore about it like the Hexe and there are tons of things in it that would make me hesitate to not play with it enabled; ultimately I am not happy about it. There are some fundamental game design issues I have with how the devs treat challenging encounters in this expansion, namely Alps and the Kraken. Long story short they rely a lot on ideal rolls which are unrealistic to achieve through normal gameplay and don't offer a lot of counter-play which is otherwise abundant in the base game and the DLC itself. I find it bizarre that the Hexe and the Kraken exist in the same game expansion when they are so radically different design-wise.

There's a lot of new story content, most of which I like, but there are a couple of areas where the quality dips. For the first time in the game's history you get a dialogue tree, and it doesn't quite fit the rest of the game nor is it very well implemented. There's also a few places where characters use far more modern slang or reference than you'd expect, in a game where "Fark" is used frequently getting a sudden modernised spelling strikes me as a bit tone-deaf to the setting. Most of it is brilliant, but as that is the standard of the game the deviations are really jarring.

Alps have been rebalanced once, no statement has been made on further balance changes to the DLC, and a new DLC has been announced. As a result I'll assume this DLC is finished for the forseeable future and give this a thumbs down until something dramatic changes.

EDIT: They changed alps to something more approachable. Switching review to positive as nothing stands out as being detrimental to the game. That said other criticisms remain.

I think once upon a time I imagined what I would write in a Steam review for Rimworld, and how you could contain all that gushing into something coherent that gives you average review browser an idea of what the game is like. It has been months since I've touched this game after hundreds of hours online and offline, and I realised I hadn't given it a thumbs up. Now with a clear and lucid mind being able to think back on my experience and critically evaluate what I liked and disliked about the game, I should be able to write a clear and concise description of the game.

And I can't because when I think back on it I am overcome with this overall happiness and joy, thinking about all the little adventures I had. The time I learned how to use an anti-grain warhead in self defence, that time Bodo lost his second leg going to get a cybernetic replacement for his first leg, the time I was overcome by robots, the time I ate people in desperation, the time I ate people just for fun, the time I ran a tortoise farm, the time I accidentally made way too many hats, the time I spent 3 hours building a defensive approach to my camp only to have the enemy arrive from the other side, the time a wild panther ate all my weed, and so on... and so on... and so on...

So in short: This game is amazing, it is one of the best I have ever played in my life. The fact that simply thinking about it I am overcome with a desire to gush about it not even having it fresh in mind should be a testament to how fun it is. It is in the category of games that keep you up until 5am, without a meal since breakfast because you're just that engaged.

The absolute only critique I have of it is that the engine- and genre limitations makes it lag a little in the lategame, but you'll hardly notice on an average system. Though if you care about the technical side of things; the skill and care put into this since early access is a breath of fresh air and worth reading up on if forum discussions and changelogs are still available. It's nice when a developer really cares.

Playing Rimworld is like being in love, in the best possible way.

It is an incredible shame that WB ruined this game at its release, because it is genuinely one of the most enjoyable action games I've played in a long time. It's wonderful to look at, the voice acting is decent, the music is gorgeous, and the gameplay (barring a few minor issues such as camera-wrestling) is just plain fun. It's a real pleasure to wander around in this world and always have something new to entertain yourself with. The epilogue, if you care for it, is a little bit level-spiked which I think is a shame as that's where you really get to refine your gameplay; but its fine and the main story content is absolutely enough to satisfy.

Highly recommended.
But stay the heck away from the DLC.

One of the best games ever made. Beautiful writing, beautiful art, solid and engaging tactical combat. It's the kind of game I want to forget everything about so I can re-experience it, when I say 'best game ever made' I am not exaggerating; this is the sort of game that belongs on a plinth.

An unnecessary but not unwelcome addition to DD.
