Service ain't the only thing being terminated, but also what little remains of PlatinumGames' faith in PC gaming. I still think Nippon Ichi Software is to blame regarding why Platinum (and nearly every Japanese game developer for that matter) is as superstitious about PC gaming as they are.

@RedPillBlues they're still giving their A game to console game development though. When PlatinumGames releases their next game for PS5, it'll only be on PS5

I honestly think it all comes down to the fact that the console market/culture is way bigger in Japan. This applies to some western developers as well. As the platform continues to grow, we will definitely see more support. Comparing now to 2012, I would say it's much different and better now.

More Japanese developers are moving to PC, yes. However, they are still not without their negative opinions towards the platform, and are only selling their games on PC just because the platform is too big to ignore.

Because most Japanese devs still don't like PC gaming, they are willing to drop their PC support if things don't go their way with how good the sales or review score is. With PlatinumGames primarily focusing on games that only release on consoles, I can't imagine them wanting to continue their PC support willingly.

And if I'm perfectly honest, this wishy-washy view that Japanese game developers have towards PC gaming is a very strong source of validation for Epic Games to continue bribing Square-Enix. In fact, I'd rather Epic play a more active role in the Japanese PC gaming scene, so as to ensure that there'd be PC ports of games that otherwise will never have one

I think it's different now. Many Japanese devs are starting to port their games to PC and will continue to do so regardless of this situation. The market has grown, and the sales are massive on PC to ignore.

Even though we will still see failures like Babylon's fall, but there are still many games from Japanese devs that are succeeding like the Persona franchise, Fromsoftware's games etc... Maybe "buy x so y can be on PC" rule will still imply on some situations, but overall I don't think the failure of one game will dictate or change the perception of other devs.

Back in 2012, they released Cladun X2 on Steam, which was around the time when the Disgaea franchise was at the height of its popularity. NIS' failed Steam release has told the rest of Japan that Steam was too big for most Japanese developers to ignore, though the fact that it failed had also sent the message that they should approach the PC platform with enough superstition that they'll expect fans of ANY of their games to like ALL of them just cuz they chose to game on PC.

I can only hope that Platinum's failures on PC will educate people that the need to "buy x so y can be on PC" is here to stay, because we could be doing a much better job at securing most Japanese developers' faith in PC gaming

Can you please elaborate on why Nippon Ichi Software is to blame regarding why Japanese developers are superstitious about PC gaming?
