A surprisingly competent dodgeball game

Full disclosure: I got to round 12. Very interested to see if anyone can manage to get to round 20.

Clutchball is a simple game, but an effective one: You and your opponents share an arena (there's no dividing line) and you scramble to grab and throw spheres at one another until your team or the other is knocked out. Your teammates are actually quite good, and serve as "extra lives" since you switch over to control them if your character is knocked out.

If I had one main gripe with this game, it's that your teammates respawn way too slowly. You have hardly any control over when they get knocked out, so it seems unnecessarily harsh to only respawn one teammate per half-dozen rounds. If they go ten rounds with no problems only to all get knocked out on the eleventh... well, you're pretty hosed, sorry. While it's theoretically possible to survive 5-on-1, I haven't been able to.

Still, for a half-hour distraction (more if you really want to try for round 20) this is a solid game.

Has one strength, but too many weaknesses for my recommendation

Credit where it's due: Being able to have a race of 60 cars on a single track is great fun. If that's all it takes for you to think the asking price is worth it, go ahead.

That said... There's only one track in the game, with an annoying tunnel section that frequently turns you around. The chaos of 60 cars means you can get derailed long enough to lose your shot at first place, even without committing any driving errors. There's only the one-off race mode, your only rewards are achievements, and even one of those appears impossible to get ("Into the Void" requires you to fall off the map, but the level geometry doesn't have any gaps I was able to find, and I never experienced a collision that knocked me through the geometry).

So, if you're an achievement hunter, or if you want a proper racing game, my verdict is:

The descriptions aren't being ironic. Don't buy this game.

After a very long, unamusing, unskippable intro sequence, you are given control of a small weak fish whose only defense against invading crabs is to throw bottlecaps at them (I couldn't figure out how many hits it took to kill one, I don't care to find out). After a few minutes of this, your sandcastle house is swept away by the tide and the game freezes, forcing you to use task manager to close it.

This barely qualifies as a game, and if I could refund the money for this part of the Sokpop Super Bundle without refunding the whole thing, I would.

Not recommended.

Fast because it's short. Difficult because of poor physics and controls.

This is one of the buggier Sokpop titles I've played - and I don't mean in terms of insects.

Every surface in this game either sticks to and immobilizes you, or allows you to clip straight through. The fruit you gather only triggers the automatic pick-up mechanic about half the time - and then, in half of those instances, your legs will simply hold air, and be unable to pick up anything else until you fly over a leaf deposit area.

The flying mechanic is physically irritating, because you basically need to hold down the spacebar at all times. The combat mechanics, while somewhat novel, don't give enough feedback for victories to feel satisfying - every encounter amounts to, "fly towards enemy, click, hope they don't block and you don't miss."

With the final boss in particular, missing means you will clip into his game model - which doesn't stop his perfect aim from one-shotting you anyway.

Pass on this one. Not recommended.

Simple and elegant, a fantastic proof-of-concept

Peppered displays a rarely-seen genre: A tile-based RTS (which isn't a TD).

It also has a few mechanics that are quite novel: each tile has a varying amount of ammunition that your units must take time to gather, and your campfire's AOE healing effect can make a huge difference if utilized correctly, but you'll need to leave it to gather more ammunition.

Is it flawless? Of course not. The overlapping displays can make issuing orders or checking ammo counts at a glance quite difficult. But I'd love to see the PvP tactics that this game would result in. I imagine fierce hit-and-run sessions where each player tries to extinguish the opposing campfire without losing units, and even that wouldn't guarantee victory.

That said... It is very short. I was completely done with it in under half an hour. So spend only what you feel that's worth.

With that caveat - recommended.

The Sims, except with llamas. That is the joke.

Llama Villa serves as a surprisingly compelling parody of the Sims series - it's bizarre how, even in this format, checking need percentages and periodically receiving income to play with makes for an effective gameplay loop. If you like the Sims, go for it - your buildings are saved automatically and the simple building system still allows for pretty robust layouts if you put in the time to make them.

Recommended.

Web swinging without web slinging

Spider Ponds is a novel title, and a difficult one. Unfortunately, most of that difficulty stems from its awkward control scheme. I was on the higher end of the 45 minute runtime - it was a while before I realized the red flashing was hunger pangs instead of fear from croaking frogs.

It's worth a shot at whatever price point you're comfortable with for 30-45 minutes.

Surprisingly powerful for what it is

The conveyance of this game is remarkable. It starts off as a fun game about cleaning up a beach. It's possible that I'm reading too much into it, but the range of emotions I felt as my 20-minute gameplay time advanced was quite interesting.

Give this one a shot. Recommended at whatever you're comfortable paying for a 20-minute experience.

Sort of like oldschool Runescape, if it were prettier. And empty. And bad.

The core gameplay loop for this game involves having slap-fights with the enemy of your choosing, then healing very, very slowly by standing in a hot spring. There's no progression save for four numbers that you can increase by winning enough slap-fights - presumably with NPCs, as there's no one else playing (because why would they?).

Not great. Not recommended.

A pleasant ten-minute distraction

"A short game about daydreaming" describes this one pretty nicely.

Recommended at whatever price point you think ten minutes of decent relaxing gameplay is worth.
