Despite Sega's atrocious DLC policy and the YongYea voice that hopefully I won't hear much of (because you shouldn't be playing without Japanese voiceovers), it's still THEE promised sequel.

After spending 100+ hours on my first playthrough and as someone who has played most games in the series, I can say it's a top three Yakuza AND JRPG. Incredible this is in the same span of time that Baldurs Gate 3 and Final Fantasy 7R2, Persona 3R, Shadows of the Erdtree...we're just spoiled right now.

Although the actual game mechanics are dated and it starts as a pretty clear tribute to Misery and Twin Peaks, it does eventually become a more interesting narrative.

Fortunately or unfortunately, Alan Wake 2 makes the original feel vastly inferior, and thus was not a massive pleasure to come back to in 2023 - if it wasn't for said narrative, of course.

Metal Gear: Ground Zeroes, except about 40 hours worth of content.
Now the official best introduction to the series.

What you may have heard before and is true: This is probably the best and/or most standalone Soulslike / Bloodbourne experience I've played yet, and actually has a story!

What you may have heard before and is NOT true: This game is very difficult! / This game is too easy! It's just right baby.

What you may not have heard before or may not know: This game does the whole "flashing red attack" differently than the previously few Soulsbournes so you might want to read the tutorial closely or look it up specifically online, but we're talking "cannot guard or iframe" not "cannot perfect parry or dodge out of the way if you do it properly"

What you may not have seen or may not experience: I also had a number of weird glitchy moments, achievements not popping for items received, achievements popping before gathering all the required items, quests not being able to complete because you did something slightly out of order - you know, traditional FromSoft experiences.

sometimes you're on drugs and you're like "this requires more/different drugs" and this is a great example of "whoops"

It's not entirely negative more than it's a ''BEWARE'' - Disco Elysium comes as hard to recommend to people who are more interested in gaming than audiobooks/political conversation or people who don't like fandoms like Undertale and that cannibal incest anime.

This is a really good 'choose your own adventure' audiobook with horrific video game functionality that would be considered C rate if it wasn't for the writing.

And it IS good writing. To not spoil anything, it's a compelling "The Hangover" meets "Amnesiac True Detective" narrative mixed into and played by a colorful cast of contrary and complimentary characters set within the backdrop of political and cultural decay. Conversations are customized to your character based on your RPG building decisions and conversation choices - which can lead to some of the best and most pretentious dialogue and pondering I've seen since it's common comparison (20 years late) Planescape Torment, just more aimed in socio-political upheaval than grand cosmological eschatology.

The main gripe is that the framework that was created to house/cage it using Unity feels shoddy at best. Could you imagine if Larian or a developer put the same level of love into the game actions as they did the writing and narrative?
