Very, very poorly optimized. It's already extremely poor performance on the starting island, but once you hit the mainland it's an order of magnitude slower, even at lowest settings. I am playing on a machine that is a bit better than the recommended spec the game advertises. I can't imagine playing this game on the minimum spec. There are a countless list of visual artifacts and bugs.

I'm not a big fan of the artistic direction here either, especially not the materials.

The combat is too Skyrim inspired and falls apart completely. I'm not a fan of the movement at all, even with the current bug where you can jump+crouch-slide. Especially during combat. This game is more similar to Skyrim than the other weird comparisons I see in other reviews, like Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, etc.

it has potential to be fun but as-is the core gameplay is frustrating.

A lot of other people have mentioned this, but it's important to highlight how touching an enemy for a fraction of a second will drain all your shields and hull immediately leaving you for dead. Upgrading your shield won't help as you might get maybe 20 shields, but the enemy is ticking you for a hundred damage in a fraction of a second. Yep, damage ticks every frame and there are no invincibility frames. The damage is from contact/collision with ships, this is how you will die 90% of the time, and you will be given no time to move out of contact range before you die.

By the time you get to the end, enemies are moving so quickly that there is no opportunity to dodge them before they all swarm you completely and you are forced to take a huge amount of damage & hope your invincibility upgrade goes off. e.g. I got to the final boss only for him to immediately appear on screen and shove me into the "border" of the arena and instakill me.

There is an upgrade to give you invincibility after taking a huge amount of damage, but because you need to take a large amount of damage to trigger, it's rarely going to trigger before you die, and if you are in the middle of a swarm, it won't be enough to get out. You can't rely on it at all.

In contrast, you'll almost never die to the bosses -- they are real pushovers as they don't deal any contact damage. However they will still sometimes push you into a swarm and kill you.

The other huge problem are the weapon. The majority are completely useless until you spend a lot of your levels/resources into upgrading them, and even then, they give orders of magnitude worse DPS than others. It is a waste of your level/resources to get them unless you are going to invest heavily into them, which diverts away from investing into the better weapons. They don't really combo well together either. I've gotten the farthest in this game only using one weapon and rerolling when forced to pick a new weapon. In fact I think there is only one good weapon in the entire game, which is not an exciting thing to say for a bullet hell.

I like the idea of travelling between planets to pick up health/resources, but the enemies spawn in so frequently that it's extremely risky. Especially since the enemies will teleport to the edge of your screen if you move too far away, causing swarms that are extremely difficult to dodge and will deal a ton of damage (if not kill you). Basically there is very little to no downtime to go travel between the planets. As well, the camera is not zoomed out that far, making travelling quickly nearly impossible without immediately colliding into another ship and taking a massive amount of damage.

There are also planets that you must stay on top of to get bonuses. One is more gold per pickup, but AFAIK there is no way to measure the impact this has so it's hard to say if it's worthwhile. Then there is the tinier planet that has turrets, but they don't seem to help much (again AFAIK no way to measure impact), and it didn't seem to noticeably help even after sinking a lot of level/resources into it. With both these planets, it's very difficult to stay on top of and you usually have to abandon quickly.

Anyway I like the core gameplay loop of the game but wish the weapons were better balanced (notably, they give more initial impact), there was more downtime between waves to travel between planets, collect resources and mine for ores, and if the game were slowed down to make dodging less frustrating. It's in early access and low price so I still recommend it, giving benefit of the doubt that some issues will be addressed by release.

Completed two of the endings, i assume I got the good ending with all items, but some of the endings you seemingly have to guess your route at the end to get. It has quite a few jump scares, which I wasn't a big fan of; it felt like it relied on 'taking over' the game & UI to show some creepypasta abomination a few too many times.

I didn't really understand the story or environment, it seems too vague and i didn't really feel a sense of a theme that tied everything together. I understand there was some cult or religion trying to summon something based on the phase of the moon, but I wish the little snippets of text we get were more specific.

A lot of the interaction buttons are useless; you'll never (or only once) use close, talk, pull, push or put. In other words, it should have just been use/take/open.

That said it's free, it's short, I liked the puzzles (except with the maze at the end) and I like the ambience.

Unfortunately, the solutions here can be pretty illogical and frustrating to the point that I didn't finish. The gameplay is just too frustrating to recommend to anyone. Once I got to the forest section, which I guess is after yera 2, I just quit. The game just became more and more of a pain in the ass.

I like this much more than Obra Dinn. It's just so much easier to navigate for clues and the world is much more detailed. Almost every puzzle has an "aha" moment where everything clicks together narratively, which seemed completely lacking in Obra Dinn. There is no speculation, or any random guessing, and the abundance of detailed artwork and descriptions allows you to miss quite a few details and still progress in the story. Then you can recall these details later and start piecing things together. I beat the game, only needing a hint on one early level (the poisoning in the mansion), but I was able to piece everything else without hints. I only had to break out a notepad once, as one puzzle requires you to do some (very basic) math.

It's a very rewarding experience and I definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested enough to scroll down to the review section.

A lot of comparisons to hotline miami, but it's more like a minimalist 2D version of SWAT 4 or Ready or Not. I think a lot of players come in run-and-gunning like in Hotline Miami and get frustrated when the game punishes you for this, but if you have played similar SWAT games before you shouldn't have any problems with this game. I recommend going non-lethal on each map if you are having problems with score.

Be prepared to match with people with 2,000 to 10,000+ hours in the game, and are completely jaded after being abused and wringed by their team-mates & Valve for 10 consecutive years. The match-making system is *completely* broken.

Seems saves don't work in this game, at least not through proton. I would double check on your system before making any progress into the game.
