Pros:
  • Cool action game that feels like Contra and Castlevania had a baby. Contravania? Castlontra?
  • Really, really, REALLY good music.
  • Not the best story in a video game, but it's serviceable. The voice acting quality varies quite a bit, but the actress for main character does a really good job.
  • Game has a punishing difficulty, but I felt it was well-tuned on Normal difficulty. If you enjoy a challenge that feels very possible to overcome, you'll enjoy this, but you might be scared away by having to re-do levels from scratch when you die too much.

Cons:
  • The controls have some big problems. You can only shoot arrows at a fast pace if you tap at an extremely specific rhythm, otherwise it feels like the game ignores your input when you try to shoot quickly. The game handles "down" inputs in an annoying way: If you're running, you can't press down to crouch, and if you're crouching, you can't press a downwards diagonal to start moving. If you shoot while standing still, the character can't move for a brief period of time, but there's no such move delay if you shoot while moving. With it being so heavily inspired by Contra, I wish the controls were as well-implemented as that game.
  • No support for exclusive fullscreen. I couldn't get g-sync working so I ended up getting some ugly judder when playing.
