There are better weapons available, but it sucks to have this as a DLC weapon. Damage is pretty good for a starting pistol, and only really gets replaced with other pistols if you care about accuracy over damage, or have attachments for other weapons. Hard to say whether this is P2W, as it’s balanced quite well among other choices, but it shouldn’t be a microtransaction. Only get it if you are getting the deluxe edition.

P2W garbage. Not necessary. Only get with the deluxe edition if you want the skins. Gaming industry needs to stop doing this.

An amazing recreation of a series of old arcade game styles/genres. Each game is made with beautiful pixel art, clean animations, and a bumping soundtrack. 198X oozes quality.

Despite all the good I have to say about this game, I am personally not a fan of the dialogue heavy scenes. These don’t offer much to my personal enjoyment, finding them rather corny and boring. 198X is also very short, so that’s something to consider going into your purchase… You can however extend this time by replaying each game for their respective hard achievements, which will probably take longer to achieve than beating the game itself.

198X is a game that focuses on quality over quantity, with a loose story to tie together games that target nostalgia. Each game is enjoyable and distinct enough to keep 198X’s runtime feel continually refreshing, and this strength allows 198X to stand out among a growing list of retro inspired games.

‘Dwarf Fortress’, a gargantuan-complex-in-depth simulated world, crowned as the most realistic simulated game to ever exist, and even being featured in the ‘Museum of Modern Art’. Dwarf Fortress has a long history of development, primarily developed by only 2 brothers, Tarn and Zach Adams. With the Steam version you get a UI and keybinding overhaul, and instead of text-based ASCII graphics and only 1 song, you get actual graphics and a full OST. This is the definitive way to play Dwarf Fortress as it currently stands - and with mod support, adventure mode, and an ASCII graphics mode coming in the future, at its asking price, not only is it worth buying, it stands as one of the best at what it does - even among its competitors… Most of which were originally inspired by Dwarf Fortress.

To further explain how much depth this game has, I might as well send you its wiki, which resembles almost a pocket introduction to reality, as it describes how our reality works, in detail - but instead of doing that, I thought I’d try do my best to summarize SOME of what this game accomplishes.

Everything in the game is simulated in real time and tracked without the player's influence or direct input - civilizations will rise and fall, and have their own internal conflicts, materials, moods, etc.. You’ll be able to view 100s of years of procedurally generated and simulated civilisations, down to every action someone took throughout their life - in the legends viewer.

Organs, skin, nervous tissue, hair, and distinct animal parts are all simulated, and instead of having a generic HP system, the game will base the demise of each creature on the blood it loses - a blood system which interacts with each individual simulated part of their body. 712 creatures are simulated with distinct features such as shells, hoofs, horns, and unique abilities.

Clusters and stone layer-types are realistically simulated and affect how roughly 81 stone/rock/ore-types spawn. There are 71-72 trees in the game, each with their own unique wood type. Different wood types affect density/weight, and that density/weight affects storage hauling, weapons, and armor. Metals have density, a melting point, and material value, and armours and weapons made with it are impacted by impact yield, impact fracture, impact elasticity, shear yield, shear fracture, shear elasticity. Glass also shares a lot of the same factors as metal, same with leather, and a lot of other materials, where each sub-effect is coded into the game and is dependent on a value/number given to each effect, which changes the quality of most if not all crafts. There are roughly 112 different crops/plants, each needing their own condition - such as light, temperature, biome, above ground, below ground, wet, dry, etc. and can be eaten raw, cooked, or turned into alcohol. Each plot has different levels of fertilization/yield.

You can trade, create military units, look at the thoughts and emotions of all your dwarfs, and specify each individual clothing piece on their body, see each dwarf improve at their trade/craft/profession, and even read books they’ve written.

Dwarf Fortress is also technically 3D, as you can traverse through different 2D layers that create a 3D space - allowing you to travel up and down. This allows you to build massive castles, underground fortresses, trap rooms, path water and lava, and basically do anything you can think of.

I could go on, but I hope this encapsulates what makes this game so great. Currently though, there are some issues.

Issues such as: UI cutting off, blurriness on zoom in, jittery/lagging screen panning, and poor control design which requires a lot of manual remapping to make feel good, taking quite a large sum of your time initially (especially because some settings don’t match their in-game names). While you can put up with a lot of this, and even just use your mouse instead of bothering with using the keyboard for 90% of actions, I do think an overreliance on the mouse makes the game quite click intensive, which doesn’t feel “good”. Overall though, these are minor compared to what you had to put up with on the classic version of this game, which for most people has a ridiculous barrier to entry - more than most games.

Amazing release, hope the best regarding Dwarf Fortress’ future development, and may the next 2 decades of development get us closer to that goal of simulating 100% of reality!

Slime Rancher is a tycoon-farming game, and among the genre of builder/tycoon/farming games, my favourite part is progression; seeing numbers go up. Slime Rancher succeeds at this, but in a lot of ways lacks the complexity I’d had hoped for.

The game is split into two parts: exploration and farming. Exploration is by far the most fleshed out part, despite being a smaller part compared to the grind that is farming. There is a lot to explore, with various zones/areas that are unique, each with their own unique slimes, hazards, puzzles, and treasures… My one gripe with this part is not being able to interact with the treasures, until late game upgrades become available, despite most of them being non-sequential towards progression, and more so for decorations. When it comes to farming, my biggest gripe is repetition and lack of automation… While automation does come in later, it is restricted and still requires some interaction by the player, meaning the daily farm run is only being circumvented slightly, and only ever reduced in time. This isn’t a bad thing per say, but the repetition does feel tedious, and I wish there was more here.

There are side activities like trading, decorating, toys for slimes, and even a basketball mini-game, which is all great, but ultimately feels quite useless, especially the trading (rewards are never that great), and only ever got my attention when I knew I could get an achievement out of it.

Despite all this, Slime Rancher is addictive and fun. You lose yourself in the experience, with most of my gameplay being within a 3 day window. I don’t usually have such dedication to a single game, especially single player games, with me bouncing between titles and hobbies all the time, which is testament to this game's success. My hope is the second game gives more options at each level of progression, has more potential hazards to deal with when farming, and in general just offers more to the experience, without restrictions to automation/object placement.

Not good for VR without a HOTAS or 3rd party fixes. Does not work automatically for me (HP Reverb G2), does not detect controllers.

Despite being informed, I let hype get the best of me. I'm going to refund 'Scorn'.

I'm fine with short experiences, but I usually expect the price range for games like these to be under 20 dollars... While the game has an amazing aesthetic, I don't think visuals are enough. You’d think the experience would be carried by story, but there is seemingly no story... Gameplay? Walking around and clicking things in a certain order, with restrictions on the physics/interactions of each puzzle - making the solution merely trial and error - is not fun; my brain isn't being challenged, so it's hard to really consider these "puzzles". As for combat... I'm 2 hours in and there have been no enemies; early gameplay trailers showed various situations where you'd be hiding from and attacking enemies, with a real tension to it... While I assume it's coming up, with how short the game is, I doubt it's worth me playing ahead of my 2 hour refund window.

To really illustrate how bad this price point is: you could spend less and get 'Rimworld', or spend a tiny bit more and get 'Factorio'... Games that could easily have you dumping 100s of hours, which each hour having you glued to the screen in addiction. Why would I recommend a game that puts itself in the price bracket of so many games that are just far superior.

Visually, while great, with the world feeling deeply complex, I find the repetition of room layouts to be confusing. Maybe this was the goal, to fit the “labyrinth” concept, but it just comes across as lazy… According to the Wikipedia for this game, it’s been in development since 2014, and benefitted from Kickstarter, which makes me question what was even being developed in all that time? Assets? I understand the team is small, but with how many reused assets there are, and how short the game is, I’m confused why it would take this long.

Something off-putting visually is the lack of shadows, with a lot of the game being this airy-grainy-mist look, which I think takes away from the visuals, rather than enhances it… Striking shadows and clarity would make this look amazing, and with the open-red-rocky areas and the purple-red meaty areas being so visually stunning, with deep colours and shadows, it’s unfortunate to keep alternating between them and the plain mechanical interiors.

Scorn is also not the most optimized game… I’m running a 3070 and I get the odd freeze/hiccup regarding framerate, even though most of the time I’m past 100 FPS no problem. There was also this wall texture with red, green, and blue pixels spread across it, which makes me think either my PC is dying or there are some serious issues that need to be patched.

If you want to enjoy what Scorn has to offer, just watch someone else play it... You can awe at the visuals, and the minimal gameplay won't be missed.

Cool concept, but having to rely on dedicated arrow keys screws me over because of my keyboard; while I can switch layers to use arrow keys, I then lose typing functionality, which makes the experience frustrating as you rely on both.
