Again, if you feel second person works better, then why not give the modding tools a run around?
As for first vs second person, it's a lot of effor to change the existing descriptions for what essentially amounts to personal preference. I mean, I personally think that the journal is more written in-character than by a secondary person, at least for this game. In that prespective, first person narritive makes sense.
If you want to make a second person quest objective mod, then go ahead. Be determined even in the face of the odd-seeming game issues.
I don't have any current plans to patch Random Alternate Start, however. I'm not sure if that mod needs to be patched, since I never investigated it.
