I do have a temporary (if time-consuming) fix to this. You could open the models with missing textures, save those texture files, and upload them to postimg.org for your own personal use. Then you just have to paste the link to the image in the 'custom model' box that pops up and it should be good again.
I made this mod originally when the only other assets around for tabletop RPGs were tileset collections, but this has since grown and my models are no longer needed as much (as they lack good collision).
