Patch adds some new character select stuff. Would be cool if this (and the other ones) were updated to include it.

Well yeah, they aren't free. They both strictly require some resource to be spent to gain them. Meanwhile the items that Tainted Keeper's effect *does* impact could be free in certain situations without it (such as first room item room, or completing a boss room without getting hit). It doesn't impact those other things because there's already some resource cost.

And even if that wasn't how I felt I don't think any other line would be quite as fitting for the character's shtick. "Most things are not free" is wordy, and "Nothing is free* (line break) *except chest and sacrifice room items" is even wordier.

Although the little asterisk does make me a chuckle a bit admittedly.

by that logic isn't nothing free? i mean, you have to spend keys to get into treasure rooms, bombs for secret rooms and tinted rocks, health for devil deals, and spend effort and time for angel rooms and literally everything in general

I meannnn in both of those examples you listed there's still an exchange of some currency. Key for the golden chest, and money for the sacrifice room rewards, so imo the current description still holds up

@cadetpirx No, there's a separate version for eyeguy's portraits. And sorry, but this mod unfortunately wouldn't be compatible with that mod you linked either. It requires manually replacing the portraits in the charactermenu.png and charactermenualt.png files of this mod.

@darkly77 That's a perspective I hadn't considered, actually. I just figured some people preferred the vanilla portraits for some reason-- which I won't claim I understand, considering I see all of them as the equivalent of a kid standing there with their mouths gaping open when you take a picture of them out of the blue-- but hey! You do you, lol.

Thanks for making this as a separate mod from the one combined with new character portraits. The new portraits are cool but I haven't unlocked a lot of characters yet so it's nice to see their vanilla designs when I eventually do

Maybe a symbol with AO inside? Box is already kinda small so might be hard to smoosh them in like that.

Hm. Yeah I'm a bit torn on that. While I can kind of understand that perspective, I also see it as such: the items are still active items, and function exactly like a regular active with the sole exception that they cannot be replaced. Just because they're presented a bit different in the UI doesn't change the inherent "type" of item they are.

Although at the same time maybe it is worth noting the unique interaction it has with this starting character. But then also what if it makes people thing it's just some unique pill or card to start with is another random concern I have.

...I'll think about it! Honestly though, I may just keep things as is simply because there's reasons for both sides, so I'll go with the one that requires less work on my part.

Shiny! The only thing I would change is, if possible, make the pocket actives also have the [o] box. Simply because that's mildly more accurate.

Not a big deal either way.
