Bosses in Equin: The Lantern are easily identified by the glowing red aura around them. With 3 exceptions, specific bosses will always appear on specific floors. Though fighting them is completely optional it is very oftentimes worth the risk to kill them as they can drop either a golden or (rarely) a shadow chest for a reward. Additionally, defeating bosses will earn you Xtoli Points which can be spent on rewards for future runs.

You'll know when a boss is on the current floor by the "An Evil Force is Nearby!!" pop up message.

Each listing that follows will be set up like so:

Floor: The place where the boss is found
XP: Experience Point reward
Gold: Gold Pieces reward
XTP: Xtoli Points awarded upon defeat
HP: Maximum Hit Points
STM: Maximum Stamina
ATK: Physical Attack Power
DEF: Physical Defensive Power
MDEF: Magical Defensive Power
Hit: Melee Hit Percentage
Evade: Chance to Dodge melee attacks
Actions: All possible battle actions
Equipment: Carried items that can be stolen by a thief

So now that that's out of the way, let's get to the bosses themselves!

Troll
Floor 10
XP: 27
Gold: 30-46
XTP: 1
HP: 30
STM: 16
ATK: 15
DEF: 5
MDEF: 0
Hit: 55%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), BASH (33%), ROAR (17%)
Equipment: B.astard Sword, Roasted Chicken, Snakescale Armor, Blue Potion, Barbarian Crown, Spiked Cap

The Troll is very likely the first boss you'll encounter while playing. It is ugly, slow, and stupid. Since it doesn't know any magic your warrior won't have to worry too much. It carries a shield it will use to try and bash you with, lowering your defense. It can also let out a mighty roar, boosting its offense in a major way. Any attacks made after that will be devastating to a low-leveled or underequipped adventurer.

It might be hard to level a thief fast enough to steal from it, but he has some great equipment if you can.

Plague Frog
Floor 10 (Alternate)
XP: 75
Gold: 50-66
XTP: 1
HP: 20
STM: 20
ATK: 12
DEF: 5
MDEF: 0
Hit: 65%
Evade: 10%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), PLAGUE (25%), ICE (12.5%), ROAR (12.5%)
Equipment: Frogskin Coat, Vitrox B, Turkey Leg, Blue Potion, Silver Flask, Frog Rune

A rare and exceedingly cute froggie that is loaded to the gills with ice magic and disease-based attacks. It's tougher than it looks. They will only sometimes appear during a rain floor event on floor 10, and are considered sort of rare.

Dev's Note: This alternate boss used to be the Fuzzy Chicken but was replaced on 9/3/18. Don't worry, you baby chicken fans, as that teenie guy is still in the game- just in another location!

Ninja
Floor 15
XP: 450
Gold: 125-205
XTP: 1
HP: 50
STM: 35
ATK: 19
DEF: 4
MDEF: 0
Hit: 60%
Evade: 15%
Actions: ATTACK (40%), DODGE (20%), STEAL (20%), POISON (20%)
Equipment: White Potion, Yellow Potion, Ninja Sword, Blue Potion, Katana, Leveling Scroll, Spazz Weed, Cat Claw, Cobra Rune

The Ninja is definitely a big step up from the lowly Troll, and pretty much has to be to keep his army of muggers in check. With lightning reflexes and poison-tipped weapons, it'll be tough to even land a hit. Worse, he might even try to steal something out of your backpack when you're not looking! Prepare yourself for his poison attacks by using foot powder before triggering the fight.

The Hangman's Hammer will deal critical damage to all manner of muggers and thieves, including this guy!

Dev's Note: Rarely, the Ninja will be sporting a black suit instead of his traditional white one. That means he's also carrying a Shadow Garb on him- A very nice piece of thief armor. Try to steal it if you can!

Dev's Note #2: As of 1/13/19 the Ninja can open doors, like all thief-class enemies.

Rift Fiend
Floor 20
XP: 660
Gold: 50-106
XTP: 1
HP: 60
STM: 32
ATK: 20
DEF: 10
MDEF: 17
Hit: 55%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (40%), FLAMES (40%), HEAL (20%)
Equipment: Hellfire, Fire Salts, Fire Water, Blue Potion, Red Potion, Campfire Set, Volcanic Axe

The Rift Fiend will always appear on floor 20, which will also always be an Inferno Floor event. It goes without saying that if you want to have any shot of beating this thing you're going to want to first use any items that'll give you fire resistance.

It has high defenses and the ability to heal itself when in trouble. Going up against the Rift Fiend with unprotected wooden weapons and armor is basically suicide.

If you're fortunate and have found an ice-imbued weapon like the Frost Siphon, it will always deal critical damage against fire guys like these.

Water Dragon
Ponds
XP: 600
Gold: 325-450
XTP: 2
HP: 75
STM: 35
ATK: 20
DEF: 5
MDEF: 7
Hit: 60%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), ICE (25%), ROAR (25%)
Equipment: Ice Water, Ice Crystals, Cold Cloak, Blue Potion, Giant Icicle, Wizard Crown, Dragonscale Shield, Fish Rune

This guy can appear totally out of the blue on any floor while you're fishing, usually scaring the bejeesus out of everyone! If you want to try to kill it for fun, first use any items that give you cold resistance and fish away. Be very careful not to let your stamina get too low while fishing, as you don't want to be too tired to fight this thing when it appears!

Putting a campfire set down next to a pond you intend on using to fish the dragon out is a great idea, as you can use it to quickly and easily restore your stamina an unlimited number of times.

Unlike other boss monsters, the Water Dragon won't drop any treasure chests upon being defeated. Also if you do manage to kill it any ponds will be safe from other dragon attacks in the future.

If you've somehow located a Dragonslayer sword first, it will always deal critical damage against the Water Dragon.

Hell Hound
Floor 30
XP: 1050
Gold: 225-405
XTP: 1
HP: 81
STM: 33
ATK: 22
DEF: 0
MDEF: 16
Hit: 60%
Evade: 5%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), FLAMES (25%), ROAR (25%)
Equipment: Fire Salts, Fire Water, Blue Potion, Hellfire, Leveling Scroll, Cape of Fire, Volcanic Axe, Salamander Rune

Another firey jerk, the Hell Hound is the toughest dog in the entire universe (and Beverly Hills). Prepare for him as you would the Rift Fiend: Fire resistance effects to protect against its heat magic. It has high dexterity and is good at avoiding your melee attacks. He can also make a mighty loud roar and boost its physical attack power a bunch. Thankfully it cannot heal itself, so just beat on it until dead.

If you're fortunate and have found an ice-imbued weapon like the Frost Siphon, it will always deal critical damage against superheated enemies like these. Even the lowly Dog Star mace will critically hit this canine du caca.

Plant King
Floor 30 (Alternate)
XP: 1500
Gold: 350-550
XTP: 2
HP: 90
STM: 40
ATK: 30
DEF: 8
MDEF: 16
Hit: 50%
Evade: -5%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), POISON (25%), ROAR (12.5%), SUMMON (12.5%)
Equipment: Golden Pumpkin, Golden Apple, DDT, Putrine, Blue Potion

Imagine a world where there's an even TOUGHER Killer Plant.. Welcome to that world! The Plant King is a leafy b.astard who presides over all plant folk and can sometimes be found on floor 30 in place of the Hell Hound. Try to take him out quickly before he can call Killer Plants to his side!!

Since he's a plant of course, you can use some different methods to kill his royal highness that won't work on other bosses. The DDT's spray will severely weaken it, for example. If you've found a Pest Scroll you can even use it to kill him without entering battle at all! Keep in mind that if you do this you won't gain any XP or a treasure chest afterwards.

Dev's Note: As of 10/11/18 you can also kill the Plant King by dumping a black potion into any pond on his floor. Keep in mind this will cause major pollution and not only kill all platlife but any fish in the ponds too!

Ghost
Graveyard Floor Event / Dumping a Golden Flask on a Bone Pile
XP: 999
Gold: 225-405
XTP: 1
HP: 85
STM: 38
ATK: 22
DEF: 0
MDEF: 12
Hit: 70%
Evade: 12%
Actions: ATTACK (60%), DODGE (25%), ZAP(15%)
Equipment: White Potion, Dark Hood, Blue Potion, Wizard Cape, Leveling Scroll, Wraith Mace, Spectral Orb

A rare ghost enemy who can sometimes appear prowling graveyard floor events. Unlike other bosses, it can continue to come back on other graveyard floors even after being "killed". It can rarely cast the powerful ZAP spell, so if you have any lightning resistance items you're going to want to use them first before engaging this guy.

Holy enchanted weapons like the Parish Blade or Battle Cross will hit for critical damage against undead A-Holes like the Ghost.

If you're playing as a Cleric his TURN spell decimates all undead creatures, including this guy.

Dev's Note: As of 10/11/18 you can now also summon the Ghost boss by dumping a golden flask on any bone pile. This can be repeated until you run out of golden flasks or piles of bones!

Construct
Icebox Floor Event
XP: 3000
Gold: 100-200
XTP: 2
HP: 90
STM: 32
ATK: 35
DEF: 18
MDEF: 0
Hit: 50%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (60%), ROAR (20%), ICE (20%)
Equipment: Frost Siphon, Rod of Ice, Cold Cloak, Northern Cap, Blue Potion, Ice Water

There is no giant rock guy more feared than the Construct. Made by some wizard with a terrible sense of humor, this living mound of rubble sometimes stalks the frozen wastes of the Icebox floors. It has an incredibly high attack power and its resistance to regular weapons is almost as high. Worse, it's rumored that that wizard may have made more than one of them too..

The Boss Slayer sword, Sling Shot, or Giantkiller Club is just the thing you need to take this thing down!

Golden Dragon
Floor 40
XP: 3300
Gold: 1225-1500
XTP: 2
HP: 130
STM: 60
ATK: 33
DEF: 10
MDEF: 22
Hit: 61%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), FLAMES (25%), HEAL (25%)
Equipment: Fire Salts, Hellfire, Cape of Fire, Blue Potion, Dragonslayer, Fire Water, King's Crown, Red Potion, Midas Crown

This is an incredibly tough opponent, and one you should only attempt to face if you have some outstanding gear. It has very high HP and the ability to heal itself, prolonging a nasty fight. Even your wizard may find himself out of stamina due to this. The Dragonslayer or Boss Slayer swords will deal exceptional damage against this scaly so and so, if you've happened to find one.

But sometimes the best course of action is to simply run away!

Bob
Floor 40 (Alternate, Rare)
XP: 3097
Gold: 137-1361
XTP: 5
HP: 55
STM: 40
ATK: 37
DEF: 23
MDEF: 30
Hit: 73%
Evade: 8%
Actions: ATTACK (18%), HEAL (18%), DEATH (18%), FLAMES (10%), SLEEP (9%), DODGE (9%), ZAP (9%), POISON (5%), PLAGUE (4%)
Equipment: Credit Card, Scroll of Kul, Skeleton Key, Black Potion, Pink Diamond, Boss Slayer, Gem of Silence, Cricket Rune, Badge of Honor, Gasil's Coin

Hands down the toughest chest monster in the entire game, who simply goes by the name "Bob". Why Bob? He was so busy kicking @ss he didn't have time to think of a better name. He has a terrifying array of attacks and can heal himself to boot. Bob is one of a very few enemies in the game who can cast Death magic, which has a good chance to kill you instantly. Use a Bless-giving item like a Holy Cross before battle to protect you from this fate!

The good news? Like the Reaper he will always drop a Shadow Chest upon defeat.

The Locksmith or Boss Slayer sword will deal critical damage to Bob!

Dev's Note: Bob carries the Badge of Honor and Gasi's Coin, extremely great accessories. Stealing from him is the only way to get these, making them some of the rarest items in the entire game.

Reaper
Quiet Floor Event
XP: 2850
Gold: 325-605
XTP: 2
HP: 111
STM: 40
ATK: 30
DEF: 2
MDEF: 16
Hit: 70%
Evade: 12%
Actions: ATTACK (33%), DEATH (22%), POISON (12%), ICE (11%), SLEEP (11%), ROAR (6%), PLAGUE (5%)
Equipment: Reaper's Hood, Reaper's Scythe, Black Potion

The Reaper is easily one of the hardest things you'll face in the game. With high stats, killer melee attacks and magic that can put you to sleep or instantly kill you you're going to want to load up on ice resistance and smelling salts if possible. If you have a Holy Cross its bless effect will completely protect you from the Reaper's death spell. Poison resistance items aren't a bad idea either. If you can manage to defeat this enemy, you'll be in for a nice suprise: He will always drop an unlocked shadow chest- which holds some of the very best loot in the game.

The Boss Slayer sword will always hit for critical damage vs. the Reaper. I hope you brought one!

If you're playing as a Cleric, don't be fooled: The Reaper is an agent of death but he's NOT an undead enemy and therefore is not affected by your TURN spell. Don't waste it here!

Whether you decide to fight it or not, there can only ever be one quiet floor event per playthrough. So survive if you must, but don't kick yourself later!

Dev's Note:
I totally lucked out and found a Gem of Silence in a shadow chest when I went to fight the Reaper in the screenshot below. By using the Gem, I created an Anti-Magic field and this jerk lost half of his aresenal.

Dragon King
Coven Floor
XP: 15000
Gold: 5000-5160
XTP: 3
HP: 200
STM: 100
ATK: 40
DEF: 15
MDEF: 19
Hit: 80%
Evade: 8%
Actions: ATTACK (50%), FLAMES (25%), SLEEP (12.5%), ROAR (12.5%)
Equipment: Equin's Elixir, Dragonscale Helm, Dragonscale Shield, Dragonscale Armor, Dragonslayer, Dragon Hammer, Blue Potion

New to the game as of the "Cult of the Dragon King" expansion is none other than... The Dragon King! Super powerful and incredibly vicious, he is sometimes summoned into this mortal realm from his loyal cultists. Your only chance is some fire and sleep resistance, a lot of defense, and a special dragon-killing weapon like the Dragonslayer or Dragon Hammer. The boss slayer sword will also do the trick.

Upon killing this guy you'll get a Shadow Chest 100% of the time, and a ton of XP and gold!

Lich
Floor 50
XP: 7500
Gold: 1000-1500
XTP: 3
HP: 155
STM: 100
ATK: 42
DEF: 15
MDEF: 22
Hit: 70%
Evade: 0%
Actions: ATTACK (40%), FLAMES (15%), ICE (15%), ZAP (15%), SLEEP (15%)
Equipment: Book of Spells, Lich Archstaff, Grim Ring, Blue Potion, Black Potion, Wizard Cape, Lich Crown

Unless you are absolutely insane or stacked with the mightiest of dungeon armaments, you should never take this supreme undead wizard on in a fight. With the highest stats of any monster out there and the ability to cast any spells he makes the Reaper look like a total wuss. If you DO want to get all the way to the 50th floor and attempt to kill this thing, here's some suggestions I offer:
  • Maximum HP and stamina to begin the battle are a must. If you have any purple potions laying around now's the time to drink one.

  • Total spell resistance if possible. If you luck out and there's a guild on the floor with a visiting guildmaster, he can offer to give you defensive buffs for 300 gold pieces. The buffs will protect you from the Lich's magic.

  • Even with defensive buffs applied, you'll still need a high MDEF. Load up on gear that has bonuses to MDEF like Owl Helmets and Shields.

  • The Lich also hits like a truck in melee. Strong armor or high evasion rated gear is also a must.

  • Equip the highest powered weapon you have if you're going to melee it to death. Some weapons like the Boss Slayer, Parish Blade, or Battle Cross will always deal critical damage to guys like this and are a real help. Weebish weaponry is also super top-notch in fights like this.

  • If you're a Warrior and have decent DEX you might want to try the SLAY skill. It can be incredibly powerful if it connects, even against this guy.

  • If you're a Cleric you want to try and pump as much into your MAG stat as possible, as your TURN spell's damage scales off of it. Anything that can provide a Spell Boost effect (like using a Magic Wand for example) is also a good idea. Even this deadly enemy will fall to several high-powered TURN blasts.

  • If you're fighting it as a wizard you'll want MAG stacked gear and as much stamina as you can. Since you won't survive many hits regardless you're going to want to make every spell count. A Rod of Zap will greatly enhance your ZAP magic.

  • You might want to consider taking a Totem with you into battle. Warriors using two handed weapons can use the HP recovery and Wizards who run low on stamina can refill it with one.

  • Don't let the Lich get the jump on you! Decrease your odds of ambush if the floor is also a Darkness event by using a torch or campfire first.
And if you somehow do manage to kill it, you will have gotten one of the very hardest achievements in this already pretty hard game. Congratulations!!

Updated with the new XTP rewards system.

Use a rain scroll if you can next time, it doubles lightning damage. If you get a Rod of Zap that also increases zap damage by 300% more (!)

Sure, I'll do that in a detailed manner, it's well deserved. I just need to wreck the lich next playthrough. The mage's Zap in blue phase probed to be the ultimate boss slayer and fancied myself their heads yesterday, of the dragons and the ghost.

That's the spirit!

Consider leaving a review of the game as well, you've gotten pretty far and have more insight than the guy who couldn't figure out the volume options did lol.
Gasil 12 Jan, 2018 @ 10:19pm
I won't rest until killing all those f*ckers at least once. I've endured enough humilliating deads from them.

Somebody else has to get there!

Very informative. Maybe this will help me to get to floor 50...
