The Spawn Area
When you first land in your Hurtworld server, you will spawn in a flat desert area. To give you some perspective as to where you are, the spawn area has been marked on the world map below:

While you’re new to the server, stay in the Spawn Area. The Spawn Area will have all the resources you need to craft your starter gear before heading out in to the wider (more brutal) world.
Gathering starter resources
Your first concern should be non-player elements trying to kill you, such as cold and hunger. To stay alive, you’re going to need resources.

Head towards the larger rock faces from your spawn point and start looking for sticks and stones on the ground to pick up. To pick up items, look directly at it and press the E key by default.

Sticks and Stones found on the ground in the Spawn Area

Once you have gathered some resources, it’s time to turn them into the tools and objects needed to survive and gather resources more efficiently.
Crafting starter items
As a new player, you’ll be Handcrafting the resources that you collect into more useful items. To open up the Handcraft menu, press ‘Tab’ to bring up your Inventory and navigate down to the Handcraft button in the lower right of the GUI.

From the Handcraft menu, you will be able to see the recipes to craft the beginner items. In this guide, we recommend making the following as soon as possible:

  • Campfire (20 Wood, 5 Flint) – Key to survival. Campfires keep you warm at night and allow you to cook meat; cooked meat replenishes hunger faster than raw meat.
  • Flint Hatchet (5 Wood, 5 Flint) – This allows you to cut down the larger pieces of wood found in the beginner area which is a lot more efficient than collecting sticks. Also useful for killing animals to aquire meat.
  • Stone Pickaxe (2 Wood, 5 Stone) – This allows you to mine some basic types ores found throughout the Hurtworld map. Resources acquired through mining will be useful when it comes to base building.
  • Stone Spear (10 Wood, 10 Flint) – Spears allow you to kill animals and other players more efficiently. By pressing ‘R’ to throw your spear, you can kill animals from range for food.

To craft items, select a recipe from the left menu, drag and drop the required resources into the recipe and hit ‘Craft’. After a short wait, your new crafted item will appear in your inventory.
Warmth and Hunger
The two most common causes of death at an early stage, aside from a ‘kill on sight’ player with more gear, is cold and hunger.

Cold

As the sun sets, the temperature drops. To warm up, you will need to stand next to a campfire. Handcrafting a campfire will cost you 20 Wood and 5 Flint. You will then need to find your campfire fuel in the form of Wood.

If you stay in the Spawn Area, the chances are other new survivors may have a campfire that they would be happy to share. If you’re feeling generous, you may even wish to throw down some additional Wood for fuel – after all, you’ve saved yourself the cost of 20 Wood otherwise spent on creating the campfire.

You can also become to hot by standing too close to the fire. Overheating will also impact your survival.

Hunger

Eating is crucial to survival in Hurtworld. In the Spawn Area, there will be several animals that you can kill. Killing animals gives you a chance of looting ‘Raw Meat’. If you have set up a campfire, you can drag and drop your Raw Meat into the campfire menu to turn it into ‘Cooked Meat’. Cooking meat replenishes more health and keeps you fuller for longer.
Final starter tips
That just about covers the basics. Next, you will need to claim some land, build a base [tutorial coming soon] and make your stay in Hurtworld a bit more permanent. Some final tips for beginners:

  • Use voice chat – You’re playing against people. More often than not, situations can be avoided if you state your intentions as “Friendly” over voice chat and offer to team up. Press V to use voice chat, if you have a microphone.
  • When running from players, run in zig-zags – If you’re running from an attack, run in a zig-zag formation. Why? If a player tries to use a bow and arrow or a throwing spear, you’ll be a lot harder to it!
