This addon is discontinued, but there is a great version of Melon Wars being maintained by a community member. That's Melon Wars: Factions, and its the defacto way the community plays this game:

This is a remake of a 2006 addon called WarMelons:RTS by Lap and MegaJohnny. Its a strategy game that is played in sandbox, so that you can build contraptions and your own maps, with the familiar controls of standard garry's mod.
The original addon was discontinued and broke when Gmod 13 came out, and i never heard of the developer again. I missed the addon so much that i looked for it everywhere. After more than a year without success, i decided to learn lua and make my own version.
This addon isn't quite the same as the original, but i hope it will fill the void that WarMelons left.

WARNING, DOESNT WORK IN SINGLE PLAYER. You'll have to host a listen server in order for it to work. Also, THERE IS NO SINGLE PLAYER MODE. I've decided to work heavily on the game's core, which always has been and always will be multiplayer.

Controls:
TL;DR:
Select the Player Tool from the MelonWars category, on the spawn menu, and press Reload. Click on the Help tab and check the info there.

If you want to mess around:
Go to the Tools tab, MelonWars: RTS category. Equip the "Player Tool". This is all you need to use.
With this tool EQUIPED, you can press R (or your Reload Key) and navigate the menu, to spawn units, turrets, buildings and walls.
Some instructions in the bottom right corner will guide you through the controls.
If you are not spawning anything, you can hold LMB and drag in order to select units, or double click a unit to select every similar unit nearby. Use RMB to order it to move, and use ALT + RMB to force it to target an entity.
Inside this menu you can change your team, in the Settings submenu. You should also go to the admin submenu and check Free placing, Free units and, if you want, Control any team, to be able to spawn units anywhere, for free, and being able to control all of them regardless of your current team.

If you want to play a proper game:
- Admin controls:
Go to the Tools tab, MelonWars: RTS category. Equip the "Player Tool".
Using the tool, press R, go to the Admin tab and check "PAUSE" to prevent credit income and prevent players from spawning units.
Build an arena, and spawn some "Melon Ouposts" and "Melon Capture Points" from the Entities menu. Use the Player Tool, and from the Admin tab, spawn a base for each player.
You'll want to go back to the Admin tab, on the Player Tool menu, and uncheck Free Placing, and Free Units.
Once everyone is ready, uncheck PAUSE and you are already playing.
- Player controls:
Go to the Melon Wars tab, next to Tools. Equip the "Player Tool". This is all you need to use.
With this tool, you can press R and navigate the menu, to spawn units, turrets, buildings and walls.
You can change your team on the Settings button, inside this menu.

You will only be able to build and spawn units inside a certain radius of your main building. You cant spawn units to close to enemies either.
