Running in Windowed Mode
After spending several hours trying to get Syberia to run on my Windows 7 machine, trying every "fix" and compatibility mode option I could find, I finally found this:

http://www.gog.com/forum/syberia_series/syberia_1_in_window_mode

Post 3, by drennan, did the trick. I'll repeat it here but full credit to the OP for the information.

Create a file named player.ini in your Syberia folder with the contents:

800 600 16 0 BaseCMO.cmo

The only value you should ever edit in the ini is the 4th integer (0=windowed mode, 1=full-screen mode). The first three values (Horizontal resolution, vertical resolution, bit depth) are hardcoded so they will be ignored anyway, the last one (name of the main game file) should be left alone.

For Syberia 2, the contents of player.ini should be

0 BaseCMO.cmo

Once again, 0=windowed mode, 1=full-screen mode, leave the second parameter alone.

This little gem finally allowed me to play Syberia, which I'd been looking forward to and keeping in reserve for some time. I was very annoyed to find that I couldn't run it even after trying compatibility modes, graphics card settings and the Microids site, so this was a Godsend. It's not quite as nice as the fullscreen experience but it may save your day, too.

The method with player.ini file worked perfectly. I changed the values to "800 600 16 1 BaseCMO.cmo" and it's running full screen in a Windows VM on a MacBook Air M3.

Alternative solution, so that you don't have to mess with settings.

Just download the file "DDrawCompat-v0.5.4.zip" (from this link: https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases/tag/v0.5.4 [/i][/b] ) and put the file " ddraw.dll " into main game folder.

The game will run with our system resolution, without any compatibility changes, without 3D errors or graphic acceleration.

Worked for me - following the added tip from J1Q below. Thanks for the help!

Guys, if you are having trouble try to make sure the .txt file isn't actually named "player.ini.txt". To check:

Go to START -> type Folder Option press enter -> go to the View tab then scroll down and uncheck the box beside Hide extensions for known file types

Then go back to your txt file and you should see the .txt extenstion on the end - just change it to a .ini

You will still be able to open the file with notepad (just right click on it and select edit)

Your file won't do anything if you don't change the file type first.

Just make player.ini with Shift JIS.
