Real-World Map: Timbuktu - Mali

The city of Timbuktu is sometimes considered synonymous for a mythical place by Europeans, and some don't know it actually exist. But it is a real place in the country of Mali. It is also famous for its University of Sankoré, once considered the most important scholarly institute in Africa.

The city lies just north of the Niger river on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. The town is the capital of the Timbuktu Region. Starting out as a seasonal settlement, Timbuktu became a permanent settlement early in the 12th century. The town is surrounded by sand dunes and the streets are covered in sand. The port of Kabara is to the south of the town and is connected to an arm of the river by a canal.

On this map you will start on a tile close to the river, near the town of Kabara. To the north you can find a small spot that is without sand which marks the location of the city of Timbuktu. There is one highway crossing the map. I've made rail connection on the border, but you'll have to connect these yourself. The river is fastflowing and has a ship route. Water is a bit tricky, since you can easily drain the small siderivers. Spreading out you waterpumps, or placing them on the big river will prevent them drying up.

There are several oil & ore fields, and also a few strips of farmland along the river. The map is very flat, and building should be quite easy. In reality, there is an airport to the west of the small canal. I made sure the land there is flat enough for construction.

I almost gave up looking for the kind of map I had in my mind to use... then at the very last moment I saw, and laughed, at the name and took a look. No regrets, this is exactly what I needed. Thanks. :steamhappy:

You make the best maps of the workshop. I would recommend adding more hills in the future. A flat plain for the city centre and the rest to have a mixture of flat and hilly.

@aquilifer, and by the way, I do understand that this makes placing intersections a bit annoying while playiing. I'll try to be considerate with the space between highways in any future maps that I will make.

@aquilifer, I've heard this before, and I agree that it looks a bit more realistic. But honestly I like the look of highways that are tightly together, I try to make them the same way in my cities. Feel free to edit the highways in the map editor yourself before you start to play the map. Have fun!

Your maps are pretty nice except for the highway parts, could you redo the highways in your maps? Opposing directions of travel are generally separated by a median strip or central reservation containing a traffic barrier or grass.

In the game it is more difficult to build bridges and junctions with your highways and I have to delete the entire length of it to make it pretty.

Standard 1-2 tiles wide (2-tile wide median with 2-tile wide road, 1-tile wide median with 2.5-tileish wide highway road.) medians are good and don't take up much space and can be used with standard interchanges from the game or workshop.

You can draw them like this: http://www.reddit.com/r/CitiesSkylines/comments/33qek6/how_to_build_a_parallel_roads_or_highways/

@mitchbandes, That's alright. I'm trying to make lots different looking maps. Maybe I'll try to make a completely natural environment next as a challenge :)

The work you've done is impressive, but it's not my cup of tea.

I prefer maps that don't look to be terraformed already. No neat lines of trees, no plots designated for farming, no man-made canals, no flat field for an airport; just the region in its natural state. As for the highway and railway, it should just pass through the region with no provided off-ramps, as if there are no expectations for a city to be built here.

But I'd play a Timbuktu map that was redesigned in such a manner.
