Introduction To This Series of Guides
Well hello there, stranger.
It seems like you wasted your money on this guide! Or you may have stolen it. Ha. What a fool, as it is available for free on what they call... The Internet! Your money is all mine! I can now buy myself some bread and survi-

We're already on the Internet you say? You didn't buy this guide? Good, because it wasn't even for sale. You somehow passed the sanity test. Now let's move on...

Welcome to this guide, which shall be divided into multiple chapters. This is the first, and in this one you'll learn how to unlock all the characters, use them proprely (Opinions, mister!) and what they suck/excel at. It shall be a palpituous trip to the depths of this game, full of information and spoilers. And often my opinion, because we all play differently.

Oh, and also, this is my first guide. Ever. So, if you would please leave a comment to tell me what you think I should change/add/remove/go to hell with, it'd be a pleasure of mine to read it!
Gotta Catch 'em All!
In this part of the guide, I'll include every survivalist, their name, how to unlock them, and along with that you'll be able to see beautiful pictures of them so you can think this guide was actually made by an organized, professional person (Pssst... It wasn't...)

The Starter: Commando.
How to unlock: Buy the game, go to the main menu, start a game and you'll unlock him. Pretty easy, right?

The SWAT Dude: Enforcer
How to unlock: Kill the Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant and Colossus, all three being pretty basic bosses. You'll unlock him pretty early, and he is a good character if you make it past a couple of levels. Just be lucky and learn how to git gud with him.

The Cawboy: Bandit
How to unlock: Beat the third stage. That means you gotta reach and beat the Ancient Valley (Frozen Tundra) or Sunken Tomb (Underwater Catacombs). Comes with time, and it's really not that hard to do after you get the hang on your character.

The... Female Hunter?: Huntress
How to unlock: Collect 15 monster logs. Really just a long-term one, as Monster Logs drop from time to time on enemies. You can see your monster logs if you click on Monster Logs in the menu, (Totes a breaking new guyz) and once you have 15 there you'll unlock the huntress.

The Handy Robot: HAN-D
How to unlock: Find the Robot Janitor. It's located in the last level (Risk of Rain - UES Contact Light)
The image below will tell you its location. Just find someplace that looks like that and interact with what's inside the red circle.

The Mechanician: Engineer
How to unlock: Buy 40 drones. Those drones are little machine found on the ground, and you can buy them for a cost. There is different varieties of them, and this character unlock should go well if you buy them a lot.Cash items could help too,so you never run out of money in front of them.Couple of runs to unlock it.

The Double-Wielding Gold Digger: Miner
How to unlock:Clear a Path for the Survivor. In the Magma Barracks (The Core) level,if you go bottom right, there might be a hole through the lava you can enter. If you do,going through it will lead you to a boss.Killing it gives you the Miner.

The Rekting Trick Shot 360 MLG No Scoper: Sniper
How to unlock:Beat the game.Just kill the Final Boss,Providence, and it will be yours.

The Ebola Spreader: Acrid
How to unlock:Free the chained creature. In the Sunken Tomb (Underwater Catacomb),go top right (Out of the water) and you might find a cage. You can open it!If you do,the Acrid will get out of the Cage and give you Ebola. Kill it before you get rekt and you'll unlock this character. Dis is him.

The Jedi™: Mercenary
How to unlock:Beat the game 5 times.Just like the sniper, but more extreme.

The Transformer Wannabe: Loader
How to unlock: Obtain 30 items in one playthrough. Not so hard, just need to get 30 DIFFERENT items, which is easily achieved in long runs or with the Command artifact.

The Hot Cook: CHEF
How to unlock: Get a Meat Nugget, Bustling Fungus, Sprouting Egg, Bitter Root and Foreign Fruit in one run. This one's all about Command artifact, and getting a lot of whites and one use, as all of those unless the Foreign Fruit (Orange,Use Item) are Whites, common items.

And this, my friends, is how the first section ends.
How to Git Gud With Commando, Enforcer and Bandit
Second section up, and here you'll learn that some survivalists are better at shooting, some are better at taking hits and some are better at going fast. Insert sanic pic here

Commando.
He's a fast shooter for sure.

His double tap ability will deal pretty average damage. However, he does shoot twice, which is excellent for a regular ability if combined with "Effect On Hit" items like Rusty Blade or Hyper Threader.

Tactical dive is very good for avoiding enemy attacks, and jumping at the end of the dive will help you run away or turn around a big mob, like the Colossus.

Full Metal Jacket is a FATALITY if you can line up like 10 lemurians. It pierces every type of mob, so those crowds better watch it. It also deals great damage so using it against bosses is good, and even better if they're surrounded by mobs, as it may kill a couple in the process.

Suppresive Fire is a nice attack to use on single enemies or tiny crowds due to the knockback, and pairs so very good with "Effect On Hit" items since it's literally 5 double taps done in 1 second, but with added knockback. It deals lots of damage too!

In short, get him "Effect on Hit" items and Attack Speed items like Soldier Syringe. Pretty good starting class, but don't expect killing crowds effectively with something else then Full Metal Jacket.

Enforcer.

Slow, tanky character, that can block attacks and is very good at crowd control. All about camping.

His Riot Shotgun is going to be what you use most of the time.Good range, good damage, but average attack speed and only attacks on one side. But combine that with Protect And Serve and you've got the perfect attack

Shield Slam is a great ability, dealing epic damages and knocking enemies pretty far away. Using it on crowds is effective as it will damage everyone and knock them faraway. Combine that with your Crown Control ability and you're gonna wipe them out easily.

Protect And Serve is the purpose of the Enforcer. Using it makes you block every attack coming from where you are facing, and gets the Riot Shotgun's attack speed way higher. The downside is reduced movements speed and you can't face the other direction. Using this while having your back on a wall or such is an extremely effective combo if you let no one attack you from the little space left behind you. But it shouldn't happen thanks to the Riot Shotgun attacking super fast and doing a lot of damage. Also, Shield Slam will knock whoever gets close to you pretty far, ensuring your survival. Camping close to a wall while you wait for that pesky teleporter is the way to do it.

Crowd Control lives up to its name. It launches a grenade that stuns enemies. Effective against groups of mobs, and combos well with Riot Shotgun thanks to the stun. Pretty self-explanatory attack, nothing much else to say about it 'cuz the name says it all.

TL;DR: A camper that excels at controlling crowds and blocking hits. But don't expect to move fast, unless you gave him a couple Goat Hooves, he's as fast as your gradnma's toaster's internet connection. And I'm pretty sure your Grandma's toaster has no internet connection.Unless she likes to toast her bread online on Twitch or something...
Emm... ANYWAY!

Bandit.
Really just a skill based character. Most of his attacks are bad if you suck and good if you're a winner like me. Mostly a "rogue" class character, dealing good damage, being fast but just too feeble and squishy.

Blast is a nice attack, if you're good at button mashing. The faster you press, the faster it is! Simple exemble of how it gets better with skill. It also deals a good amount of damage for a normal attack, which is really appreciable for good button mashers.

Dynamite toss is a nice crowd control attack like most explosive moves. Deals a lot of damage, but hits literally in front of you, meaning you most of the time will combine it with SmokeBomb to deal massive damages.

SmokeBomb let's you go invisible for 3 seconds, and if you use an ability while that time goes, it will stun enemies! Good for running away or beating up crowds with Dynamite Toss.

Lights out is the Bandit's "Signature Move". Deals a crapton of damage, and if you kill someone with it, it resets ALL of your cooldowns to 0, which means in short "Removes every cooldown".You also get to do a headshot kill.Combine that with Smokebomb and weaken enemies first to ensure you've got a kill and it's going to be GREAT help.

In short, the Bandit requires practice to master. Learn when to use Lights out and you're good!

How to git gud with Huntress,HAN-D and Engineer
Huntress. The perfect character for kiting,as she can..Hold your breath..Shoot WHILE MOVING!!Dun dun duuuuuuuun..While it is an amazing feature, she's got downsides too.Let's explore those a little bit (The huntress is the one I played the most (69 runs, ironically) and the one I did the longest runs with, for information, but not my favorite one.)

Strafe is the Huntress' most used ability. You can just shoot while moving,dodging,jumping,tea-bagging the ground or calling your mom.Kinda low damage but you do remain unhurt if you move correctly.Using it will take down enemies slowly but surely.

Laser Glaive is a pretty good one to place when there is multiple enemies. It bounces on up to 4 enemies, doing more and more damage everytime it hits a new target. It also has aimbots downloaded,so awesome for taking down those pesky jellyfishes.

Blink is just a simple teleportation.Use it to move away. There's nothing really to say about it,unless that it's useful to get out of risky situations or dodge an attack.

Cluster Bomb is the Huntress' only way to beat a horde of enemies.Since Strafe is a single target attack and that Laser Glaive is only attacking 4 enemies, she'd do poorly against hordes of 20+ without this attack.Literally,Rambo's explosive arrows.Take down those hordes with this attack,or deal good damages to bosses.

In short,a kiting master.Low damage, but rarely gets hit if you can manage her correctly.Thing is,the game gets harder with time, and since kiting is time consuming,it's really just going to get harder way faster, and you need some good items to survive.Learn how to play her and she'll be good, but I personally find this to be a not so entertaining character to use since Kiting is just running left and right while avoiding moves until everything's dead.Personal opinion though,it's perfectly normal to enjoy playing the Huntress.

HAN-D.
A pretty handy robot.(Heh,heheh.)Not fast and attacks slowly, but he does a pretty good amount of damage, and his OVERCLOCK ability gives him a pretty nice boost, especially if you've got enough Soldier Syringe to keep it going for long.He can tank a couple of hits, and his drones, with the Glass Artifact, can sometimes one-shot enemies, giving you free health and a new drone to keep the cycle going.

HURT has a nice name;it does hurt. For a regular attack it's pretty strong in sheer power, but it's slow attack speed will make it hard to deal with hordes using it.Using it with OVERCLOCK makes it way faster and can stun, but without items it's not that good.

DRONE is one of HAN-Ds most useful attack. After you kill an enemy, you recieve a drone, and firing it will deal a lot of damage (More than HURT) and will heal you. It's also got aimbots, heading for the closest enemy so if there's anything on the map at all you're going to hit it.You can have up to 10 drones, and each of them will heal you a pretty nice amount. The more HP you've got,the more heal you get,so combine that with Infusion/Bitter Root and it's giving out a really sweet heal.

OVERCLOCK is something you defenitively want to use a lot, since it boosts attack speed and gives a 30% chance to stun on hit.It also makes the duration last longer by hitting enemies.Combos well with HURT.

FORCED_REASSEMBLY is a nice crowd killing move,as it does MASSIVE damages and is a AoE (Area of Effect) skill.Downside it,it takes quite a long time before it actually hits, which means you're exposed to enemies attacks for about 1 second. You can fix that with a couple of soldier's syringe, but still leaves you exposed to hits a lot in the beginning of the game.Massive damage to both HAN-D and the enemy, you could say.

In short,it's a really tanky and slow robot. If you get him a couple of soldier syringe,he's your best bet a survival though.Fast attacks is all this guy needs,so give him those fast attacks and you'll get the best out of him. Also, health items, lots of them.DRONE gives more health if you've got high max HP.

Engineer
Pretty good character, but going in the same place as Enforcer:good at camping a certain place, like the teleporter.Let's see what this dude can do (Alongside the enforcer,he's the one I've played the less since I prefer fast moving characters.Still,he is a character I appreciate and plan on trying out more.)

Tri-nade is a pretty useful attack,as it does exploding damage thus good at controlling crowds, and since three are thrown at different places it's atually very, very good on spreaded out crowds. But the damage each does is kinda low..Which is mostly the only downside to it.

Bounding Mine is such a good camping skill.Spread it all around the teleporter before activating it,and there's gonna be explosions everywhere for the first 10 seconds, killing the first few enemies to spawn. You can get up to 15 and you restock on them at a pretty high rate, which means that on low difficulties you can place a lot of them before activating teleporter (On higher difficulties enemies spawn a lot more, making it hard for them to not explode if you let them there more then 5 seconds).

Thermal Harpoon is like the ultimate Aimbot.Throws 4 aimbotted harpoons at enemies, dealing a LOT of damage on hit.4 of them thrown, never misses, always deal a lot fo damage.Good if you use them close to a boss; They'll all fly to him, dealing extreme damages

Auto-Turret is also a pretty good skill for camping.Put one of those close to a teleporter, and it'll start shooting at those guys on it's own, giving you free firepower for 30 seconds.Put mines around it and it's a deadly trap you don't even need to monitor. Now go in the middle of it and Tri-nade at them..Yep,winning combo.

In short,he's a pretty good camper, but he'd have so much uses of a good old Alien Head,to make his mines/turrets come back faster.Since Alien Head cuts cooldown by 30%,and that the turrets have a 40 second cooldown,it's going to make them come to you way faster.Mines too, those have a 6 second cooldown.3 Alien head and it's going to rain mines!
How to git gud with Miner,Sniper and Acrid
Miner.
Thought that since this guy wasn't trained to kill, that he was a lame-o and just another "Not-My-War" type survivalist?Oh how wrong you are.The miner's got a lot of dashes, making him invincible pretty often. His attacks has wide range, and he is very mobile overall.Let's see what he's got for us.

Crush is the regular attack.Nothing special about it,you sometimes will forget it's whole existance.Does decent damages, but attack speed and range just doesn't keep up to the rest of his abilities.Use that while the rest is on cooldown or if there's just one lemurian standing in front of you.

Drill Charge is a dash attack that you can charge. The more you charge it,the more damage you do,building up to insane damages while giving you a pretty good invincibility time,as it goes on for a little bit even after you finished using the skill. You can also move wihle charging, which is extremely useful.Big damage, big range, good invincibility, can move while charging it..What's the downside?8 seconds of cooldown. If you can place it in the good times,it's destructive, but keep it for hordes as you'll have to wait 8 precious seconds before using it again.

Backblast is kinda like Drill Charge,a dash attack, but it's not charged, and, like the name hints,it dashes backwards. Most of them time you can just turn before using it to attack the direction you want, but you can also combo it with Drill Charge to go away and charge it.It also stuns for a pretty good amount of time, which leaves you plenty of time.Such a good synergy between both skills! It also gives a short invincibility while using the attack.

To The Stars can act like an extra jump and an attack:You jump and hit everything below you for decent damages.Use it to reach new places or control crowds very effectively, but both options are pretty good ones.

In short, this character just needs Alien Heads. The cooldown on his abilities is too high and that's mostly his only downside.Get a couple of alien heads and let the dashing start!

Sniper.
Like the game says itself, the Ultimate Boss Killer. His attack does monstruous damages, but he has to reload between each of them.He can also recieve bonus damage if you do a good reload (Purple) or Perfect reload (white).Damage piles up easily, and his biggest weakness is hordes or teleporting mobs.

Snipe does pretty good damage, especially for a regular attack.Downside is you gotta reload between each shot, and if you want those damage bonuses better not spam the button. It actually CAN fire pretty fast for what it is if you spam the button, but it's still slow and tires your finger easily.

Steady Aim is where things gets interesting. You can stop and charge your attack, doing monstruous damages on hit and piercing through enemies, dealing with crowds and one-shotting multiple bosses. What's so abd about it then? The fact it's damages aren't so good if not charged for long enough, and that you cannot move at all while charging.Timing and position is really needed here to achieve full charging, but it is so worth it.In multiplayer though things are way easier.

Military Training is just a badass backflip.Doing one before Steady Aim is a good idea,as it will let you charge most of it if the enemy isn't super fast or teleporting.Let's you avoid most attacks and is good for positioning/mobility too.

Spotter: SCAN is why this kills bosses so easily. On use, your "spotter" will fly away and go to the enemy that's the most dangerous on your screen (Most of the time bosses if they are there) and make critical hits land 100% of times on that one enemy. It'll also tell you in number how much HP it's got left.

In short,it's a slow attacker that deals extreme damages on little doses. It works waaay better in multiplayer if your friend can cover you though.Still does kill most bosses in one shot, making him a very capable sniper.Also,360 no scope montages are cool.

Acrid.
The DPS Master. His fourth skill gives Ebola, which on it's own deals good amount of Damage per Second.Sadly, animals on this planet has a natural resistance to Ebola, and it will go away pretty fast.Luckily, that's not the only thing Acrid reserves you..

Festering Wounds is a very, very good regular attack. Not super damaging, but it does give poison to enemies, killing them slowly but surely.Best is,the poison stacks on every hit you do!

Neurotoxin it a big poison jet on the enemy's face, causing lots of damage and stunning them for 1 second. The acrid IS a melee class,so having a ranged attack on him is pretty useful.

Caustic Sludge is a pretty fun one to use, making yourself kinda like an "Arena".You will put poison wherever you walk, making enemies go slower and allies (You and your friends if you are on multiplayer) go faster. It will also last for pretty long and deal decent damage to enemies.

Epidemic is literally Ebola. You can throw it and whatever you hit with it gets sick with Ebola. It will take damage and spread to 2 enemies after 1 second. Can really beat the crap outta lots of not-so-tanky enemies.Like, you gather a horde of about 100 lemurians or Jellyfishes, mostly all of them will die to Ebola if you let it spread to everyone.Pretty OP.

In short,it's the master of DPS.His poisons will stack pretty nicely, and his combo of both ranged and melee attacks is an interesting synergy.Really an interesting character, playable in different ways and always so enjoyable.
How to git gud with Mercenary,Loader and CHEF
Mercenary
A true Jedi.He has a laser sword man!And he's like,cool,and stuff.
On a more serious note, this one's a good one.Fast and hits hard, but gets rekt kinda easily. If you can get a good start with him or practice with him a lot, you'll love playing him.Very entertaining class.

Laser Sword will cut up to 3 enemies for decent damage in front of you.A normal class regular attack, and you'll nearly NEVER use this attack unless to finish something or in the beginning.

Whirlwind is a pretty useful move.It will make you jump while attacking, doing 2 hits that each deals decent damage. It actually avoids a lof of enemies' attacks, and will hurt multiple part of a Magma Worm, which will kill him in a couple of Whirlwinds. Also got a nice cooldown so usable often.

Blinding Assault is a dash attack. But not any kinda dash attack. If you hit something with it,you can use it again, for up to 3 times!Use it on hordes and you can attack them 3 times while being completely incinvible.Free damage! Also can be used effectively to run away, especially in the middle of a horde; You'll be able to use it again, making you damage enemies and go pretty far while being invincible!

Eviscerate is the ultimate ninja badass move.Get invisible (And invincible at the same time) and hit an enemy close to you up to 6 times, for massive damages. You're invincible while using this skill, and it does a lot of damage, and and and it's badass. And stuff.Free damage!

In short, what every ninja jedi should be.Fast attacker that uses his multiple invincibility times to fight, and his dash attack to beat hordes.Very entertaining character to use,and a favorite of mine.

Loader.
Here it is.My favorite character of all,the Loader,is here to beat up those monsters.Melee class by description, this dude will hit hard and has good points everywhere:Good mobility, good invincibility time, good AoE attack and good damage, with good attack speed.Let's see why he's so epic

Knuckleboom will hit enemies pretty hard, but every time you use it 3 times in a row,it'll do double damage and knock enemies in the air.For a regular attack,it DEFENITIVELY is a winner one.

Debris Shield will make you invincible for 3 seconds and give you a short speed boost.Thing is,it's got a 5 second cooldown only, making you vulnerable every 2 seconds out of 5.That's not a lot of time for them to hit you, especially with those damages. Now add to that Alien Heads..3 of them, and you'll be vulnerable for only 1 frame! If you're running at 60 FPS,that's 1/60 of a second of vulnerability!Mostly like complete invincibility,as one frame is not a lot of time to kill you.One of the best,if not THE best, defensive skill.

Hydraulic Gauntlet is a very good skill for those who requires mobility. You fire your fist in front of you,and if you hit anything (Wall, enemy, ect) you pull yourself to them, and deal good damage while also stunning them if they are enemies.Makes you move fast, far, and kill dudes. What to ask more?

M440 Conduit is one of the best crowd control skill.Using it one will place an electrical pole on your location or under you if you're in the air.Nothing special.Using it again will place another one,and a thundershock will appear between both conduit, dealing good damage for 9 seconds to everyone in range. It actually has a way bigger range than the sprite supposes, and will kill hordes pretty easily.

In short, pretty balanced character using Melee,Defensive,Ranged and Camping skills to be mostly the best all-arounder there is.Get himm Soldier Syringe and Knuckleboom will go blindingly fast!

CHEF.
A cook serving his customers...on silver platters.Slice them apart or roast them nicely, meat is meat and there's mouths to feed back on his planet!(This guy's a special one,as his ability 4th ability upgrades all the 3 others. There will be the Upgraded version under every abilities!)

DICE will throw a butcher knife at your customers, dealing average damage and boomeranging back.Hits multiple enemies and can do it twice!Pretty good regular attack

BOOSTED DICE does same as DICE,but throws 9 of them in a circle around you.

SEAR shall cook your customers for good damage and knocking them back.Pretty simple too, yeah. The damages are good and the knockback it high though,so it's simple and handy!

BOOSTED SEAR does exactly like SEAR but with more damage

GLAZE makes you ride a wave of oil, making your enemies oiled and gunky.Slows their movement. And since oil burns well, just use a nice little SEAR to do them massive damage AND stun them.

BOOSTED GLAZE is exactly like GLAZE,but lets you ride the wave of oil for a longer amount of time.

SECOND HELPING simply makes the next ability you use do the "BOOSTED" counterpart of that move. The cooldown won't go away as long as you don't use the BOOSTED attack though,so make sure to use it correctly.

In short,a pretty good character to beat up hordes easily. All of his moves attacks multiple enemies so hordes better watch themself! Not much to say about this guy though, pretty self-explanatory.
Ending of Chapter 1
And here is how this chapter ends.

Took me 6 hours and a half to do,for the curious ones.

i just want to add on the Enforcer: although he's great at blocking when you have backed up against a wall or a ledge, his shield can't protect him from AOE attacks so you sadly cant just park yourself against a wall and fight whatever comes yourway. Jellyfishes are especially the bane of Enforcer.
Asarumna 7 May, 2020 @ 9:45pm
I'd also like to add that the easiest way to beat this game is definitely using bandit with glass and command
The Rock Man with the Rock Plan 12 Apr, 2020 @ 4:30pm
Crowd Control is misspelled in the Enforcer Section on one of the abilities.
Hotrod Spider 14 Nov, 2018 @ 7:04pm
Ah, I got it on the 10th (last Saturday) and I still haven't beat it but I am definitely making progress. Just today I've unlocked my first 4 artifacts(command, spite, enigma, and one other I can't remember [spirit or something? It makes the bad guys drop items and all chests are gone.]), as well as Acrid. I already have enforcer, engineer, loader, bandit, and of course, commando.

I don't remember how long it took honestly, it is so far ago, but quite a bit of time. I'd say around 20, 30 hours in?
Hotrod Spider 14 Nov, 2018 @ 8:18am
Also, just out of curiosity how long did it take you to beat the game for the first time?
Hotrod Spider 14 Nov, 2018 @ 8:14am
Loader is by far my Favorite as well. When you mentioned that the huntress was not your favorite something inside of me told me that your favorite was the Loader... and it was right. weird....
