Running Vanilla Deus Ex and surround sound in 2025 easy
By WiseWhiteWolf
Tired of outdated guides or ones with many un-needed steps to troubleshoot to just make the game run on modern systems? Look no further than here! (note: I did not create the mod, but absolutely think it deserves more credit for the work done and simplicity it provides)

Intro
Hello! (My first guide also, so please excuse the mess of editing)

-Disclaimer- I am not the creator of this mod. I simply am sharing its joy to others.

I hope this guide helps you as the mod did for me and my frustrations of trying to play this game on a modern system. Other guides gave me issues I couldn't solve, so if you are running into issues too.. hopefully this finally solves it for you as it did for me.
Required downloads
Steps and downloads to get this game running..

1. The great mod in question, Mods4Ever Deus Ex Vanilla Fixer mod. Download this https://mods4ever.com/#DXRVanillaFixer
The webpage also has linked videos of the mod creator showing a very simple install guide. While it worked seamlessly for him, I needed to do a few extra steps to get it to run. Simple install video in question below. (Note: I may of had an issue due to trying different guides and had crumbs leftover despite uninstalls that caused my issues. I also am using the GOG version of the game but there shouldn't be any difference)

---Note: Try playing the game after installing the Vanilla Fixer mod. It may of been updated/changed since I installed it and may not need you to do the following below.---

NOTE: Do NOT change video settings IN GAME. ONLY change video settings etc from the LAUNCHER via the CONFIGURE button.

2. If the above simple install doesn't work or you run into oddities such as performance when using D3D10, you need to install D3D 10 etc yourself. Go to this site https://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/#installation and download the files on the 'downloads' section
2a. Download: d3d10drv-v29.zip
2b. Install required DirectX update: dxwebsetup.exe.
2c. Install required VS2010 runtimes: vcredist_x86.exe.

Kenties site with links to required files has install instructions on there but will copy here just in case

Unzip the files (from the d3d10drv-v29.zip file you downloaded a moment ago) for the game you're playing to that game's 'system' directory. Examples of this are 'C:\Deus Ex\System' and 'D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Deus Ex\System'. You should end up with a 'd3d10drv.dll' file in said System directory, and a 'd3d10drv' subdirectory with various other files. Overwrite if asked.

-Start the game, go into configure select Direct3D10 under 'Renderer'
Surround Sound
The game still has native Dolby Surround support and works so long as you have an AVR/Receiver that can decode it. I'm not sure how well it'll work without one. For example, I have a 7.2.4 setup

Note: You MUST set PC sound to Stereo for this to work. If you have it set to anything else, no sound will come from your sides/rears/center.

1. Be sure in the launcher under 'configure', you have 'Use Directsound' under Audio checked.
2. Go in game to sound options, enable Dolby support, leave hardware sound support OFF.

Tested at docks with the robot and it pans around as it should when behind and to the sides.

Keep in mind depending where you're aiming it may seem like some sounds come from where they aren't suppose to. Such as when looking straight up or down. Seems like its just a quirk of how it works (game probably didn't have true discreet surround but not 100% sure) as some forums I found talking about the issue it sounds like its due to the engine/game itself and how it positions the 'head' of the player when not looking straight. More info you can look at this thread, here is a copy/paste from a post in there about it. https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=39823&start=20

'The 3D sound in Deus Ex is programmed a bit oddly, but I believe that IndirectSound is actually behaving correctly (in the cases that I've tested). For example, depending on whether you're looking up in the sky or down at the ground while walking your footsteps will sound like they're coming from either in front of or behind you'.

I never had luck with Alchemy or anything else. Going in game, enabling Dolby and turning hardware support off was by far the easiest solution to restore surround to this.
