Intro

An attempt to make using mods in Darktide as easy as possible for beginners.
Still a work in progress with frequent updates.

Is Using Mods Worth It?
Darktide has a great community of Mod Creators that make some excellent mods.
Examples: Adding a Scoreboard, Custom HUD, True Level for Leveling over 30 (Prestige System)

Does Using Mods Put Me in Different Servers than Vanilla Players?
Using mods does NOT put you in different servers than other players.

1. Install Required Mods

You need these mods for all the other mods to work properly.

Darktide Mod Loader is required to be installed manually rather than with Vortex.
On the mod page, select Manual download.

1. Manually Install Darktide Mod Loader (DML)
https://www.nexusmods.com/warhammer40kdarktide/mods/19

Unlike other mods, Darktide Mod Loader needs to be installed in your game folder

(Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer 40,000 DARKTIDE)

EXAMPLE DARKTIDE MOD LOADER INSTALL

1. Go to your Steam Library
2. Right click on Darktide
3. Select Manage > Browse local files to open your game folder
4. Open downloaded folder
5. Drag and drop the files from the downloaded folder into your game folder to overwrite files

Keep your game folder open for the next section and you can skip to step 4.

2. Patch Darktide to Load Mods
REMINDER: You'll also need to do this quick process after game updates.

1. Go to your Steam Library
2. Right click on Darktide
3. Select Manage > Browse local files to open your game folder
4. Double click "toggle_darktide_mods" file in your game folder
5. You should get a message saying "Darktide is now patched to load mods" after a short wait

3. Install Darktide Mod Framework (DMF)
https://www.nexusmods.com/warhammer40kdarktide/mods/8

You can install DMF with Vortex or Manually. General instructions for each method below.

Do NOT add this mod folder name to mod_load_order file if you're managing mods manually.

2A. Vortex Method (Recommended)

Vortex is Nexus Mods own mod manager.

In my opinion, it's the most convenient way to download and manage mods.
Though, it does require a tad more initial set up.
(You'll need to install Vortex and the Vortex Darktide Extension)

With Vortex you'll be able to download new mods with a few clicks rather than having to drag folders around manually or worry about editing a load order file every time you download a mod.

Checking for mod updates is easier as well with Vortex.

Install Vortex at the link below
https://www.nexusmods.com/about/vortex/

Skip to "2B. Manual Method" section
if you'd prefer to install mods manually!

DOWNLOADING & MANAGING MODS WITH VORTEX

EXAMPLE MOD PAGE

(Always check the mod's description and files tab before downloading
for any special install instructions
)

1. To download a new mod simply click the orange Vortex button on the mod page. A pop up may appear to inform you of any other mods required for that one to work properly.
2. Continue to Download. Select Slow Download, it's plenty fast.
3. Windows may ask if you want to allow Vortex to open these file types, make sure to allow.
4. After the download completes you should see a popup in Vortex as it installs.

Install/Enable Darktide Vortex Extension

After downloading your first Darktide mod, Vortex should ask you if you want to install the Darktide Vortex extension that allows it to manage your mods. Make sure to do so.

If you don't get this popup in Vortex, you can download the extension here.

https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/684

The image below shows the extensions tab where you should see it once installed.

VORTEX EXTENSION TAB WITH DARKTIDE EXTENSION INSTALLED

The image below should give you a quick rundown of Vortex mods tab.
This is the tab you will use to manage your mods.

BASIC BREAKDOWN OF VORTEX MOD TAB

Deploying Mods

Vortex should automatically deploy mods that you install/enable by default.

If you don't see your enabled mods in game though,
you may need to hit the "Deploy Mods" button on the mods tabs toolbar.

Determining Proper Load Order

It is necessary for mods to load in the proper order to work properly.

Vortex will automatically sort your load order in a sensible fashion
to avoid conflicts and achieve a stable setup.

That being said, you can manage load order in the load order tab of the program if necessary.
Refer to each mods description to find the proper load order.

2B. Manual Method

If you'd prefer not to use Vortex to install and manage mods, you can do so manually.
You might opt for this option if you only plan to use a few mods.

DOWNLOADING & MANAGING MODS MANUALLY

EXAMPLE MOD PAGE

(Always check the mod's description and files tab before downloading
for any special install instructions
)

1. To download a new mod simply click the orange Manual button on the mod page. A pop up may appear to inform you of any other mods required for that one to work properly.
2. Continue to Download. Select Slow Download, it's plenty fast.
3. Double click the downloaded folder to open it.
4. Go to your Steam library and right click Darktide > Manage > Browse Local Files
5. Drag and drop the folder into your "mods" folder inside your game folder.

EXAMPLE MANUAL MOD INSTALL

6. Open the mod_load_order text file located in your "mods" folder and enter the exact name of the new mod folder on a separate line.

(You won't have this file until you install Darktide Mod Loader under Install Required Mods section)

EXAMPLE LOAD ORDER TEXT FILE LOCATED IN "MODS" FOLDER AFTER INSTALLING DML

Removing/Disabling Mods
To delete a mod, manually delete the folder of the mod you want to get rid of and remove the folder name from your mod_load_order text file inside your "mods" folder.

To disable a mod, you can add "--" in front of the mod name in your load order text file or use the Toggle Mods menu in the Mod Options menu in game. (May require restart, does not work for every mod)

Determining Proper Load Order
It is necessary for mods to load in the proper order to work properly.
  • Refer to each mods description for any special load order requirements.
  • You do not need to include 'base' or 'dmf' mod folders in your load order text file.

Alternatively, you can opt to use a mod to sort your load order automatically such as AML.

Auto Mod Loading and Ordering (AML)

3. Changing Mod Settings

You can configure your mods in the Mod Options section of the Pause Menu in the Mourningstar.
(A small number of mods aren't configurable and won't appear in the Options menu.)
4. Enjoy Darktide with Mods

No, I don't think Fatshark will ever add official mod support like Vermintide 2 as that system has many issues and they would rather remain hands off with it.

No problem, I will add a note to the guide that you may need to manually deploy mods with that button. Not sure why that's the case though. If the Deploy Mod When Enabled setting is on that should be happening automatically. Glad we were able to get it figured out though. :HappyPCGuest:

The game hotfix today broke mods, sorry. Need to wait for DMF to be updated on Nexus. You can unpatch Darktide for now to run the vanilla version, otherwise you need to go to the Darktide Mod Discord for the current fix.
