How I Made FFXVI Look and Feel Perfect

These are a few simple things to make your game look and feel better.

Cutscenes / FOV / DoF / Ultrawide
Many of you already know of the great mod, ffxvifix. Just by default, it will uncap the framerate of cutscenes and fix ultrawide resolutions. But there are a couple other worthwhile tweaks in FFXVIFix.ini that are worth considering. You can download it here[github.com].

These are the changes I made:

[Gameplay Camera]
AdditionalFOV = 10

DistanceMultiplier = 2
By increasing the FOV and moving out the camera slightly, you can get a better view of your surroundings. Play with these values as you see fit.

[Disable Depth of Field]
Enabled = true

This will be a personal choice, but I typically want to disable this in every game I play.

[Game Window]
BackgroundAudio = true

Again, optional, but I prefer the audio to keep playing when I alt+tab.
Stuttering
Many people may experience some stuttering during gameplay. By tweaking the game's registry entry, you can give the game increased priority to RAM, CPU, and Drive. The tweak can be found here[www.nexusmods.com].
Sudden FPS Drops & Slowdown Bug
Have you experienced issues where your fps tanks seemingly for no reason, and only a restart will solve it? Sometimes during or right after cutscenes, menus, or seemingly at random, which can also cause battles to be performed in slow-motion. There is a known bug that you can observe yourself by simply restarting the game, going into the open world, swapping Eikons a couple times, and then just standing still for 2-5min. At some point, if you're monitoring your system stats, you should see your FPS and GPU usage instantly drop by at least half. It turns out, this bug is seemingly caused by the game failing to communicate with things like Razer Synapse to change the lighting on your keyboard/mouse. A bunch of players including myself had disabled the Chroma feature for FFXVI, causing this bug to trigger. It sounds insane, but it's true. There's a Reddit thread here if you want to read more.

To fix this, make sure Synapse[www.razer.com] is installed, and that the Chroma app for FFXVI is enabled, as seen here[i.imgur.com]. The Visualization app should also be disabled to prevent conflict. Interesting enough, simply installing Synapse seemed to solve the problem for users not even using Razer devices, so give it a try!
Blurry Textures & Muted Colors
When I first installed the game, I felt that everything looked a bit too blurry and muted. I also play at 1440p, as I highly prefer 120fps over 4K/60, especially in action games.

For Nvidia users, hit Alt+F3 to get into your filters while in-game and add the following:

Sharpen
Intensity: 65% (or even higher, i use 90 lol. if playing in 4K, you probably don't need)
Ignore Film Grain: 0%

Color
Tint: 0%
Tint Intensity: 0%
Temp:0
Vibrance: 24.6

I also added the Brightness filter at the default settings because HDR was a bit too dark. Those filters alone fixed my issues entirely and the game looks gorgeous now with DLSS3 + DLAA. Unfortunately I don't have an AMD GPU to play around with, so perhaps somebody could give a suggestion on that side of things.
Timely Equipment
Look, don't let me or anybody else tell you how to play the game. If you want to play on Story Mode difficulty with Timely Strikes and Timely Evasion equipped, go for it. However, I think many players will find the game quite boring and easy by doing this, and some just throw on these pieces of gear without realizing that they're essentially a cheat toggle. There are a lot of mechanics in the game that are super rewarding once you spend a little bit of time learning them. If you want my advice, simple do not equip any gear with Timely in the name, with one possible exception. The Ring of Timely Assistance is quite convenient and lets your pet automatically attack and heal as he sees fit, allowing you to focus on yourself.
Miscellaneous
These are a bit more obvious, but worth trying if you encounter performance issues. Otherwise, you can ignore them.
  • Update your GPU drivers, Windows, and BIOS
  • Increase Virtual Memory usage.
  • Run game as admin
  • Disable all overlays and monitoring tools
  • Delete shaders in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XVI
  • Enable Resizable BAR

First time ever having to deal with this kind of thing and wow that's made a massive difference. Thank you so much!

you need to install "chroma connect" in the "modules" tab, the game will be hooked automatically when launched, but i don't think it improved perfomance for me

On Synapse, how do I get the "Final Fantasy XVI" option to show up? I only have the chroma visualizer option.

It looks like the newest version of ffxvifix has better window management that’s suppose to prevent displays from going idle.

I play in borderless when the issue happens. Didn't try other.

I haven't tried Special K yet, but apparently it has a fix for FFXVI in regards to inactive windows. I wonder if playing in borderless is why I haven't had that issue.

I could, but that is a workaround. Similar to just putting an input into my controller every few minutes. I was hoping for a fix until SE patches it.

Although, now that I think of it, couldn't you just increase the "Turn off display in" value in Windows Display Settings to like an hour or something?
