The start of a magnanimous journey - Terrors unfolded:

The Burrower: Scout of the Sands
The first machine Aloy comes face to face with during Horizon Forbidden West, the Burrower is a recon that you'll meet frequently throughout your adventures. A stand-in for Horizon Zero Dawn's Watchers, Burrowers will wander the environment scanning for threats. If they detect Aloy, they'll emit a high-pitched alarm, summoning nearby enemies to join the fight.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Burrowers:

Burrowers are an early-game enemy and, as such, have a lot of weaknesses to exploit. When outside of combat, they're an easy stealth target, usually standing in one spot for a long time while they scan for threats. A good opportunity to go for a stealth takedown is when the Burrower is standing on its hind legs, as it'll remain in that position for several seconds.

  • Burrowing Attack - The Burrower will head underground and move towards Aloy, eventually emerging from its tunnels and launching a brutal aerial attack.

  • Tail Strike - The Burrower will leap towards Alloy and attack with its tail. Dodging to the left or right often results in the move missing.

  • Sonic Blast - The Burrower stands on its hind legs and charges up a sonic attack, launching the projectile at Aloy.

When in combat, its eye is your best bet to do a lot of damage. Unlike other components, it can't be detached, so you can continue to hit it to inflict serious amounts of damage. If you have a sharpshot bow, you can even take it down in a single shot by aiming for the eye. If you're having trouble hitting the weak spot, lean on your concentration ability to assist in lining up the shot.

Another good idea is to use fire against Burrowers. Early in the game, you can head to Chainscrape's weapon store to get the Fire Hunter bow. This will add fire arrows to your arsenal which is a massive help when it comes to taking down Burrowers, especially if you can't nail down the timing to hit in the eye.

The Burrower has two special moves outside of its traditional melee strikes: a tunnelling attack and a sound projectile. With the tunnelling manoeuvre, your best bet is to stay on the move and watch where it goes. You can follow its movement by watching the dirt rise off the ground in correspondence with its direction. It'll eventually leap out of the ground and attempt to hit you with a powerful spinning strike, so you'll want to make sure you're out of the way when it emerges.

As for the sound projectile, you can avoid it by shooting the Burrower's soundshell on its stomach or attempting to dodge out the way. The former is a much more reliable plan, especially as the soundshell becomes an easier target when the Burrower is charging up its sound projectile. It'll stand on its hind legs and the soundshell will begin to glow, making it a much larger and more visible target.

After mastering these strategies, you should be able to fell this beast with ease. However, many more formidable foes loom across the horizon, waiting to test your mettle.

The Grazer: Herd of the Plains
An elk-like acquisition machine, Grazers travel in packs, overwhelming threats with numbers rather than out and out power. They are a herd machine that digs up natural resources to convert into bio fuel. It is quick to flee from danger, but may attack hostile to cover the herd's retreat. They can charge enemies and use their agility to avoid damage, making them a tough machine to pin down.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Grazers:

In Horizon Forbidden West, every machine has specific weak points and is often vulnerable to special elemental damage. A Grazer has three weak points: its red eye, the Blaze Canisters, and its Rotor Horns. It is also weak against Shock-damage attacks but resists Acid-damage attacks so shock ammo is vital if you don't want to get turned into Aloy Soup lol.

  • Front Leg Kick - The Grazer rears up on its hind legs before delivering a powerful, downward kick, aiming to send Aloy flying.

  • Leaping Front Kick - With a burst of speed, the Grazer leaps into the air and delivers a crushing front kick. A desperate move when cornered.

  • Hind Leg Kick - The Grazer spins and unleashes a fierce kick backward, targeting anyone unfortunate enough to be behind it.

  • Skyward Stab - The Grazer thrusts its antlers skyward with devastating force, aiming to impale anything above.

  • Charge - Lowering its head, the Grazer charges forward with its antlers aimed directly at Aloy. This assault can be neutralized if Aloy slows it down before it uses this attack with adhesive ammo.

Players can also purchase the Shock Warrior Bow from the Merchant at Barren Light and use that to hunt Grazers for resources. To override Grazers, players will need to visit Cauldron MU located near No Man’s Land.

Grazers usually travel in herds and will attempt to flee if Aloy shoots at them from a distance. They will attack Aloy to protect the herd's retreat, but players can take them down easily by targeting the weak points.

Once you've honed your skills to tackle these nimble herd creatures, you'll be better prepared for the more daunting challenges that lie ahead. The Forbidden West is vast and full of even greater dangers waiting to test your prowess.

The Scrounger: Scavenger of The Daunt
An early-game enemy that Aloy will encounter frequently throughout The Daunt, the Scrounger is an acquisition machine that focuses on scavenging for resources. It's easy to confuse with the Scrapper, although Scroungers aren't equipped with a radar, making them easier to sneak around.

Tips and tricks for defeating Scroungers:

Defeating Scroungers is largely a case of finding the right range and timing to destroy the machine's weakest components. Much like Scrappers, Scroungers will hurl everything they have at attacking Aloy, making them overwhelming opponents but easy targets to hit with traps. Rely on acid and frost traps if you want to end the fight before it's even really begun.

  • Melee Flurry - The Scrounger's standard melee attack. It charges Aloy and throws several strikes in quick succession.

  • Shock Melee Flurry - Similar to the standard melee flurry, except the Scrounger will jump through the air, attempting to hit Aloy and inflict the shock effect.

  • Shock Projectiles - A set of shock orbs that emerge from the Scrounger's mouth.Scroungers fire multiple shots in a row, although the delay between each shot is lengthy, allowing Aloy to get behind her foe to dodge the worst of the punishment and get some free hits in.

If you don't have many traps on hand, your other best bet is to keep at range and pick off Scroungers with a powerful bow. If you have a bow with shock arrows, you can use them to detonate the power cell found at the Scrounger's rear, but using a sharpshot bow and aiming at either the power cell or resource container should bring the beast down quickly regardless.

Alongside that, stealth is a great tactic for thinning out packs of Scroungers quickly, especially as they lack the radar that makes using the same tactic on Scrappers so risky. Scroungers will go down instantly if Aloy uses a stealth takedown, meaning you can dispatch multiple machines in quick succession if you play your cards right.

Finally, melee is an option, although it should be reserved for players who have unlocked some of the combos on the Warrior skill tree. If you've managed to unlock the Nora Warrior skill, you'll gain access to a four-hit combo that knocks down Scroungers, allowing you to pull off a critical strike and end the fight instantly. However although Scroungers may seem relatively simplistic, a deadlier machine is already on the way, to test the martial prowess of Aloy once again!

The Leaplasher: Agile Cargo Master
A kangaroo-esque machine, Aloy will be able to encounter the Leaplasher after beginning her journey west following The Embassy. The bouncing transport machine can be a handful early into the game, hitting Aloy with its whip-like cargo claw and electrical kicks.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Leaplashers:

Leaplashers are generally found in herds, moving in convoys or on sites managing its cargo pods. When in combat Leaplashers will use their cargo pods as an extension of their attacks, usually retrieving it or, if not in possession of one, will prioritize equipping it. In contrast, Leaplashers who have been called by machines with an antenna component will prioritize using its cargo to support the machines that called for reinforcements, utilizing its Cargo Cannon attack to quickly set its pod in the area.

The Leaplasher is also incredibly agile, being able to hop around quickly, making it difficult to hit weak spots even with Concentration. It is able to electrify its legs and tail, resulting in dangerous jumping strikes. It can use its claw to grab Aloy, pinning her and kicking her away with its legs. The different pods can also aid the Leaplasher: noxious pods leave a health-sapping cloud, repair pods fix the Leaplasher and other machines, and radar pods reveal Aloy's location and scramble her Focus.

  • Scraping Shocker - Scrapes tail on ground before jumping to fling 3 Shock infused rocks that explode on impact. Shock damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Cargo Cannon - Launches pod in Cargo Claw at target or environment, creating a Shock explosion on impact. Shock damage disabled with purgewater.

  • Axe Kick - Leaps toward target, transitioning into a flying horizontal kick. Shock damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Jolt Slam - Jumps towards target, using its feet to create a large Shock explosion as it lands. Can follow up with up to 3 slams if the previous one missed. Attack disabled when adhesive ammo is used.

  • Reel and Kick - Shoots out Cargo Claw to grab Aloy, reeling her in to kick her with electrified feet. Only available if Cargo Claw is empty. Shock damage from this attack is disabled when Drenched.

Effective take downs of this machine include keeping your distance as the long range attack from the cargo cannon and the usual herds make it tremendously difficult close up. If you have shock ammo on hand, a good way to disable the majority of its attacks is to shoot the canister near its underbelly and once its shocked use the triple notch technique from your hunter bow to remove the cargo pod for extra resources, or use a sharpshot bow for damage. Note that using the sharpshot on the cargo pod will in most cases break it so you won't get those juicy resources nessecitious for the early game moments in Horizon Forbidden West. However once you get some legendary sharpshot bows... well I think one shot is enough to send it tumbling off the cliff lmao. But don't get too cocky yet, for the forbidden west has much more ace's up its sleve...

The Scrapper: Satiating Salvage Sentinel
A returning name from Horizon Zero Dawn, the Scrapper is an acquisition enemy that can usually be found digging through large piles of scrap. It's not all too dissimilar from the Scrounger, although unlike the fellow salvage-obsessed machine, it wields a plasma cannon and can scan for enemies in the near vicinity.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Scrappers:

Living up to their namesake, Scrappers are pretty fond of having a good old scrap. They're not particularly tactical, they won't try to pick you apart with a mix of attacks and they're going to play straight into your hands if you know what you're doing. However, that doesn't mean fighting them is a walk in the park. In groups, Scrappers will overwhelm you, meaning you'll want to use tactics to take them down.

  • Melee Flurries - The Scrapper's main attack sees it launch itself at Aloy, attempting to hit her with long flurries of strikes. The best way to counter is to stay at a distance and avoid its claws.

  • Plasma Cannon - On the Scrapper's back, you'll see a mounted plasma cannon that can deal a lot of damage to Aloy if she's at range. It'll usually fire in bursts.

  • Radar - Although not exactly an attack, the radar on the Scrapper's back allows it to locate you even if you're hidden. It'll then alert all nearby foes to your presence.

The main thing is to keep out of close proximity as much as possible. Although an Aloy that's confident in her melee ability is able to drop a Scrapper using the Nora Warrior Combo skill, Scrappers tend to focus on teaming up, meaning they won't give you much breathing room in a close-quarters showdown.

From afar though, you'll be dealing with a much more predictable move set, as all the machine really has at its disposal is the plasma cannon. A good tactic from ranged is to use a sharpshot bow and prioritise hitting both the radar and plasma cell. The bow will do a ton of damage and, when combined with both weak spots, will usually leave the mechanical beast out for the count. If you're using plasma arrows, you can also blow up the plasma cell, making it even more effective.

Perhaps the easiest way to deal with Scrappers is from the shadows though. It can be difficult as a suspicious Scrapper will usually activate its radar, locating you in seconds, but these robotic pack hunters can be felled with one stealth takedown. It makes clearing out a group of them a very simple task.

Finally, electric traps are also a good way to fell Scrappers. If you have the Shock Tripcaster, lay a trap in front of a charging Scrapper to knock it down. You'll then be able to finish the job with a critical strike.

The Spikesnout: Amplifier of Swarms
An acquisition machine reminiscent of a mechanical ant-eater, the Spikesnout is a common enemy found throughout the Forbidden West. It's not much of a fighter and instead uses its amplifying sac to buff other enemies surrounding it.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Spikesnouts:

Aloy can take these enemies down with moderate easiness but they can be a handful when teaming with other machines, using their amplifying abilities to strengthen their allies. As such, it's best to take them out during the early stages of a fight. The Spikesnout acts as a supporter, spraying machines with amplifying gas or hindering enemies with damage or stamina dampening gas, either sprayed from its belly around the machine, or shot at long range from sprayers at the end of its tail. However, the sacs can be easily shot and destroyed, giving the Spikesnout and others in the vicinity the ability from the sac. The amplifier and stamina drain sacs are quite easy: The amplifying sac can be easily shot when facing the front of the machine and is completely unarmoured, and the stamina drain sac can be easily hit when the Spikesnout raises its tail from behind.

  • Mist Spray - Lifts its tail, spaying a vapour of Damage Amplifier, Damage Dampener and Stamina Drain at target.

  • Acid Rock Burst - Spits a series of 4 Acid-coated rocks at Aloy. Rocks explode on impact and leave a residual Acid damage area. Acid damage can be disabled when Drenched.

  • Snout Shot - Shoots a glob of Amplify Damage, Damage Dampener, or Stamina Drain liquid aimed at Aloy. Projectile explodes on impact and releases clouds of vapour.

  • Slasher - Hops towards Aloy and lunges while slashing with either front claw. Follows up with another slash if the first misses and target is still in range.

  • Overhead Slash and Spray - Jumps towards Aloy and slashes with tongue while turning 180 degrees. Lifts tail and follows up with a cloud of Damage Dampener or Stamina Drain if the initial attack misses and target is in front. Can also follow up with a tail slam.

When it comes to tackling the Spikesnout, use Acid Arrows to target its Acid Canister to trigger an elemental explosion. In addition, also targeting the likes of the Amplifying Sac, Damage Dampener Sac, and Stamina Drain Sac will cause an explosion when destroyed, dealing significant damage.

Also as seen in game, the Spikesnout will run away if provoked by anything. It can also leave behind a vapour cloud that will buff nearby allies and weaken enemies. Since they will run away if Aloy gets too close, players should make sure to hide in nearby tall grass to avoid being seen. Aloy should get close and attack them directly using Aloy's spear. Regardless, the best way to take it down is quietly. Like all the other monsters in the game, the Spikesnout is also susceptible to elemental weaknesses. As long as you follow these crucial steps, you'll be once step closer to not being completely devoured by the slaughterspine with a single roar lmao!

The Skydrifter: Vicious Skyborne Menace
A recon machine that scans the skies for threats, the Skydrifter is one of the first airborne machines Aloy meets on her journey through the Forbidden West. These machines use their razor-sharp tails to defeat their opponents, meaning Aloy should focus on dismantling it while taking one down.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Skydrifters:

The Skydrifters, when you first encounter them between Plainsong and Barren Light, will likely be a difficult encounter for most beginners to Horizon Forbidden West. They’re hard to hit as they fly in the air at a brisk speed and they can deal a lot of damage. However, there is one weapon that can be your sanctity.

Let’s introduce the Ropecaster, a weapon that hooks flying machines to the ground. With three hooks to the Skydrifter, this weapon can incapacitate the enemy to the ground and allow you to get a free Critical Strike. You can also get a few free hits after the Critical Strike too as the Ropecaster is so effective against them. The Ropecaster with just one hook can also significantly slow down the Skydrifter, but it’s more prone to fail with the machine’s wailing movements.

  • Tracking Darts - Uses Tracking Container to fire a projectile that reveals Aloy's location to other machines. Creates a residual puddle that deals damage and inflicts buildup.

  • Razor Quills - Uses Razor Tail to fire 8 quills in a tight horizontal spread.

  • Claw Dive - Propels itself towards Aloy while slashing with its claws. Boosters create a trail of residual Fire damage areas. Attack disabled when the enemy is applied with the adhesive effect.

  • Wing Slasher - Glides forward before slashing with one of its wings. Can follow up with another slash if it misses.

  • Spin Blast - Boosts vertically while spinning and slashing with both wings before slamming down. Boosters create Fire explosion and residual damage areas on takeoff/landing.

While fighting the Skydrifter, be careful of its sweeping strikes and lazers that can be fired from its tail. Keep dodging and using the Ropecaster at opportune moments. Also, make sure to fully fire the Ropecaster, so it can attach to the armor plating of the machine.

You can buy the Ropecaster from the Hunter at Barren Light. It will cost you a mere 149 Metal Shards, and while it’s not a powerful weapon, its utility is well worth the asking price.

While the Ropecaster is effective, you should also know that you should try to hit its blue canisters on the back for even more damage. They’ll break off as a resource too. Its chest is also a weak point. Try to hit its Razortail too as that’s highly valuable for crafting upgrades.

Following these steps should make the vicious skyborne menace considerably more manageable, at least for the time being. With your newfound knowledge and strategies, you’ll be better equipped to handle the Skydrifter’s aerial attacks and razor-sharp tail. However, as you progress through the Forbidden West, remember that even greater challenges await, each demanding its own unique approach and skill. Stay prepared and vigilant, and you’ll continue to overcome the many perils that lie ahead.

The Plowhorn: Majestic Land Guardians -
An acquisition machine reminiscent of a triceratops, the Plowhorn is a machine you'll come across several times in the world of Forbidden West. Although wild Plowhorns will attack Aloy, she'll also come across a range of peaceful Plowhorns known as the Land Gods that help the Utaru.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Plowhorns:

Plowhorns have a unique attack that focuses on Adhesive damage. To effectively combat these machines, players should take out their Adhesive capabilities by targeting specific body parts. Its Horns and Adhesive Sac will both decrease the capabilities of the machine's Adhesive attacks and would be great targets to take out early on in a fight.

  • Adhesive Volley - Lobs glob of Adhesive from each horn, exploding on impact and generating residual Adhesive damage areas.

  • Gravel Barrage - Aims horns at Aloy and advances while firing a barrage of rocks covered in Adhesive. Projectiles generate residual Adhesive damage areas.

  • Viscous Slam - Coats horns in Adhesive and rises on hind legs before dropping forward and slamming the ground. Adhesive splashes forward and generates residual Adhesive damage areas.

  • Piercing Charge - Charges at high speed, kicking up dirt mixed with Adhesive fluid and leaving damaging Adhesive areas. Stops in front of target and releases a wave of Adhesive, coating the ground in Adhesive damage areas. Attack disabled when hit with adhesive ammo.

  • Impaling Dredger - Dives towards Aloy while slamming both horns into ground. Skids on landing, dealing damage with its body.

The machine's horns and tail provide great plowing capabilities, immediately sprouting up flowers and collectible bitter leaf as it goes behind. Despite this, it can use these horns to charge and eject adhesion substances or launch seed bombs to hide itself.

Upon sustaining significant damage, Plowhorns will activate their Rock Storm ability, using its rock churner to continuously spit out rock shrapnel on both sides of its body. This deals 10 Ranged damage per second and wears off after 45 seconds.

As for its weaknesses, the Plowhorn's horns can be shot off, leaving it unable to charge. The adhesion sacs can be exploded, leaving it sluggish, and destroying the fertilizer sac on the frill will cover it in vines. It cannot do its tail attacks if the tail is open.

Following these steps should make dealing with the Plowhorn a breeze—or at least less like a triceratops stampede. With a little strategy and a lot of patience, you’ll handle these majestic beasts with ease. And who knows, you might just make a few Land Gods your new best friends. Just remember: whether they’re charging at you or helping you out, don’t get too comfy—those horns have a way of making an impression!

The Charger: Swift Travel Companion
Found in various regions throughout the Forbidden West, the Charger is an incredibly useful acquisition machine. When overridden, Aloy can use a Charger as a mount, with the machine able to transport her long distances in a matter of minutes. Unlike most machines, Chargers can be overridden from the very start of Aloy's adventure, making knowing their spawns an invaluable early game strategy.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Chargers:

Although Chargers are weak to Shock Damage, should you have purchased a weapon that deals Fire Damage, I highly recommend aiming for the Chargers Blaze Canisters as it’ll cause an elemental explosion. These machines are quite probably the easiest in the game, as their attacks are very well indicated and give you more than enough time to get out of the way. If it even attacks you before scurrying off to its next hiding spot lol.

  • Charge - Charges and rams Aloy or enemy at moderate speed.

  • Double Strike - Forward twin front leg kick.

  • Hind Leg Strike - Twin hind leg kick straight behind.

  • Rodeo Kick - Multiple twin hind leg kicks in a circle.

  • Spin Kick - Single 180-degree spinning twin hind leg kick.

As for taking these down, if you are higher level, usually a simple sharpshot bow to the horns perched atop its head will make for an easy 1 hit KO, however, if you're not strong enough to take them down in one shot, I would highly recommend buying the ropecaster in barren light. This will be much more simplistic, as just sneak up behind them, fire the ropecaster once, and if they aren't tied down already, a second shot before they manage to notice you will be more than enough. Bear in mind that ropecasters are significantly different to Horizon Zero Dawn, and Aloy will have to fully draw the weapon *not including overdraw* to pierce through armour. The only way to bypass this and shoot it much quicker is with the penetrating rope weapon technique that you will achieve later down the line.

Chargers are always found in herds busily grazing on grass, which they convert into Blaze. Charger herds are usually accompanied by patrolling Burrowers and sometimes larger enemies such as ravagers. In order to protect them from hunters and maximise efficiency. Chargers are skittish, but less so than Striders or Broadheads from the previous game; should a perceived threat be identified, such as a nearby human, Chargers are more likely to attack rather than run. They can deal devastating damage if the player is at a low level, but once you get further into the game, the chargers will take one look at you and go. Whats that? A strange bird? More prey? Oh.... its Aloy.... SH--!

The Lancehorn: Fleet-footed Pack Hunter
A deer-like acquisition machine, the Lancehorn is an agile enemy that will charge Aloy if she comes to close. Much like Grazers and Fanghorns, they're pack machines, overwhelming enemies in numbers, however usually very much lack-lustre if singled out.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Lancehorns:

Lancehorns are always found in herds, particularly in snowy regions. With heads down they work, busily drilling and processing soil, gathering and recycling natural resources from soil, stopping only to quietly change to another spot. The presence of patrolling recon and combat machines around the herd allows them to work without having to stop and look out for perceived threats.

Lancehorns are also more skittish than most machines, typically running away from threats. However, if the threat is very close, the closest Lancehorns will attack while the rest flee. Lancehorns also employ melee attacks, making use of their horns, legs and chassis. They will charge and kick, and also employ a stabbing attack in which they charge at an enemy with their horns, inflicting heavy damage.

  • Charge - Lowers head and horns, then charges straight at Aloy.

  • Front Leg Kick - Kicks at target with front legs, knocking the target over.

  • Gore and Flip - Bounds at target horn first, embedding them in the ground for a short time, leaving an opportunity to punish the attack.

  • Leaping Horn Stab - Bounces at Aloy, stabbing viciously in multitudinous directions with horns.

  • Upward Pierce - Lowers and raises head, impaling with horns.

As for defeating them, as previously mentioned, the Lancehorn tends to travel with other machines, and can run away quickly when alerted. It's best to damage the Freeze Canisters when attacking it, dealing damage to the surrounding enemies and the Lancehorn itself, stunning them in their tracks.

The Lancehorn also procures drill-like horns that can deal high damage when charging towards you. Destroying these horns will greatly reduce their effectiveness, and turn the fight in your favor.

After mastering these strategies, you’ll find the Lancehorns are more like overenthusiastic lawnmowers than ferocious beasts. They might try to charge at you, but a little preparation will have you dodging their advances with ease. Just think of them as excitable robotic deer who forgot they weren’t auditioning for a role in a stampede. With these tips, you'll be outsmarting them in no time, leaving them to their herd antics while you enjoy the catastrophic view!

The Longleg: Harbinger of the High Ground
A rooster-like recon machine, the Longleg can be found all throughout the Forbidden West. It can use its long legs to leap across the battlefield and antenna to alert nearby machines of an enemy presence. When fighting a Longleg, your priority is to avoid its brutal sonic blast and fire attacks. Aloy can disable both of them with some well-timed arrows to its throat and head, although it can be difficult when the Longleg is surrounded by a pack of fierce machines.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Longlegs:

Longlegs are mainly deployed in groups of no more than three to patrol around herds of Zero Dawn terraformers, allowing them to work without having to stop and watch for perceived threats. Each Longleg walks in a set circuitous path around the herd, frequently stopping to scan the surroundings. While scanning, unalerted (and even overridden) Longlegs are frequently seen firing their sonic blasts towards the horizon, scanning for humans and other threats in the tall grass with echolocation. An overridden Longleg can destroy another unalerted Longleg with a single strike.

  • Sonic Stun - Emits sonic projectile that causes Deafened on contact.

  • Ranged Heat Blast - Heats Wing Burners and launches fireball. Exclusively used if it cannot reach target with other attacks. Attack disabled when Drenched.

  • Beak Thrust - Jumps forward before slamming the ground with its beak in a pecking motion.

  • Dashing Claw Jump - Hops short distance while slashing with both claws. Landing impact creates a small shock-wave. Attack disabled when adhesive ammo is used.

  • Burning Wing Flap - Activates Wing Burners and jumps directly up before slamming down, creating a Fire explosion on impact.

Longlegs are fast and agile. They employ a number of Fire-based attacks using the engines on their wings, melee attacks using their beaks and claws, as well as a disorienting sonic attack using their Concussion Sacs. This attack was harnessed by the renegade Oseram warlord and inventor Dervahl to construct a sonic weapon capable of incapacitating human enemies. Aside from combat purposes, the Concussion Sacs can also be used as an echolocation device, emitting less powerful waves to detect hidden enemies, even those in tall grass. This makes the Longleg one of four machines that can detect the player when they are usually hidden in tall red grass, with the others being the Scrapper, Thunderjaw, and Scorcher.

A Longleg has two structural weaknesses: its Concussion Sacs and its power cell. Strikes on the Concussion Sacs with high-powered projectile weapons such as Precision Arrows from a Sharpshot Bow cause a concussive explosion that damages the machine, destroys the Concussion Sacs and disables the Longleg’s sonic attack and scanning ability. A strike on the one of the Sparkers in the Longleg’s power cell with a Shock arrow causes a damaging electrical explosion that immediately stuns the Longleg. Additionally, Longlegs are particularly susceptible to attacks from weapons that utilize Shock; repeated strikes from Shock weapons quickly inflict a Shock state, stunning the Longleg.

After you’ve mastered the art of taking down these leaping troublemakers, you’ll be a pro at handling their aerial antics. Just remember, the Longleg might have a tendency to make a racket and bring friends to the party, but with a bit of strategy, you’ll turn it from a high-flying nuisance into a mere feather in your cap. And if it starts showing off its acrobatics, just think of it as a particularly aggressive dance partner—just don’t get caught in its moves. I think the last thing I want to do is waltz with a longleg!

The Bristleback: Mighty Warthog Warlord
First encountered during Aloy's time in the Daunt, Bristlebacks are warthog-esque acquisition machines that come in a variety of forms. They're a tough opponent due to their size, strength and speed, with Bristlebacks able to knock Aloy down and deal significant elemental damage. They're also the core of The Bristlebacks side quest, with Aloy discovering why a pack of Bristlebacks are terrorizing the Daunt.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Bristlebacks:

Bristlebacks only have a few weak spots to focus on, but when you hit them, you'll be able to take them down quickly and efficiently. You'll want to make sure you have a bow that can fire acid arrows (or, if you're hunting a more advanced variant of the machine, arrows that correspond with the elemental type of Bristleback you're tracking). You should get acid arrows by upgrading Aloy's standard Hunter's Bow, which is required during Forbidden West's tutorial chapters.

  • Melee Strikes - When in close range, the Bristleback will launch a string of melee attacks with its tusks. Dodge to the left or right to avoid the blows.

  • Battering Ram Charge - When Aloy is at a distance from the Bristleback, it'll ram its tusks into the ground, pull up chunks of debris and then charge at you. This hits hard, especially as the move will inflict acid damage.

  • Buckaroo Kick Area Effect - Occasionally, the Bristleback will spin in a circle kicking its hind legs, spraying acid on the ground. If Aloy is hit by the kick or standing in the acid, she'll take damage.

  • Dive Ranged Attack - When Aloy is far away, the Bristleback will sometimes jump into the air and dive onto its tusks, using the force to dislodge rocks which it then throws at Aloy. These also inflict acid elemental damage.

When facing off against a Bristleback, equip the acid arrows and aim for the two green canisters at its rear. Upon impact, the canisters will spark, which is a sign to get out of proximity as quickly as possible. The canisters will eventually detonate, significantly damaging the Bristleback and any nearby allies. It'll also apply the corrosive elemental effect, so if the Bristleback doesn't die from the explosion, the acid will finish it off. If you forgot acid arrows, you can aim for the Bristleback's tusks and grinder discs instead, although these are harder to hit and much less effective.

Outside of hitting the canisters, it's also worth executing a stealth attack. It'll knock off a significant portion of the Bristleback's health, allowing you to easily chip away at the remainder of its HP bar. You can exploit its shock weakness too. If you have the Shock Tripcaster, it's a good idea to lay down a few traps for the beasts, especially as they'll mindlessly dart towards Aloy and into tripwires. You can achieve the same effect with a blastsling, however, it's hard to get the Bristleback to stay in one place long enough to build up much elemental damage.

Once you’ve mastered the techniques to take down these bristly beasts, you’ll be ready for their wild antics. Handling the Bristlebacks is a bit like trying to wrestle a particularly cranky porcupine—challenging but not impossible. And if they start charging at you, just remember: they’re probably having a bad day, and you’re just the unfortunate target of their temper tantrum!

The Fanghorn: Agile Horned Warrior
A deer-like acquisition machine, Fanghorns will appear alongside large herds of machines and support them in their effort to bring Aloy down. The machine's sleek design isn't just for show, as it's a quick opponent with the ability to easily overwhelm its foes using its horns and fire elemental attacks. Although the Fanghorn looks like it would be an ideal mount to traverse the Forbidden West, Aloy cannot ride one. They are, however, a good way to gather resources due to their modest health pool and the fact they spawn in packs.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Fanghorns:

The Fanghorn is the strongest of the three "grazing" machines, having the largest health pool, most powerful attacks and the unique ability among them to employ ranged elemental attacks. It also possesses resistance against Fire, making it a less viable strategy to ignite its elemental canisters in combat.

  • Charge - Lowers head and charges at target with antlers

  • Flame Burst - Shoots a series of 3 fireballs at Aloy consecutively. Explodes on contact and leaves residual Fire damage areas.

  • Leaping Front Kick - Leans on hind legs while stepping forward, kicking at target

  • Skyward Stab - Stabs upward with antlers

  • Antler Strike - Coats antlers in flames and leaps at target, clapping them shut and creating a small Fire explosion in front of its head when landing. Fire damage disabled when hit with purgewater.

Aloy can attack machines with different kinds of elemental attacks. Elemental attacks in the game include Fire, Shock, Frost, Plasma, Purgewater, and Acid. Fanghorns will be weak to damage from Frost attacks. They will also be strong against damage from Fire attacks.

Another way is a Fanghorn's horns, being one of its more dangerous components. Though you can destroy it to render its ranged attacks ineffective, we highly recommend detaching it as it can be used to upgrade your equipment.

Finally you can trigger a Chain Reaction on a Fanghorn's Blaze Canister so it can't shoot its ranged fire-based attacks at you. Even if you can't trigger a chain reaction explosion, the burning state will still deal damage over time.

Once you’ve got the hang of taking down these nimble foes, you’ll find dealing with Fanghorns to be a bit like handling an overenthusiastic party crasher—annoying but manageable. Just remember, they might charge at you with fiery aggression, but a little strategy will have them bucking out of your way. And if they start looking too confident, just think of them as the ‘fashionistas’ of the machine world—flashy, but ultimately not that hard to handle!

The Redeye Watcher: Prowler of the Shadows
A returning face from Horizon Zero Dawn, the Red Eye Watcher is a nimble recon machine that stalks opponents from afar. It can call for help when it sees a threat, alerting nearby enemies and causing them to join the fight. Although it's far from the most powerful machine patrolling the west, the Redeye Watcher travels with a pack and can inflict some serious damage if Aloy isn't being careful. Their huge eye is their weak spot, meaning Aloy can finish them off with a few well-aimed arrows.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Redeye Watchers:

A Redeye Watcher’s primary attack is to fire energy projectiles at perceived enemies. Watchers only tend to use this attack if they cannot get close to the enemy. However, as previously mentioned, Redeye Watchers default to this attack, distancing themselves from the enemy to do so. Additionally, they have a somewhat higher damage resistance than Watchers. At close range, they employ the same melee attacks as Watchers.

  • Blinding Flash - Temporarily blinds and disorients Aloy / a human enemy with bright flash of light; ineffective against enemy machines.

  • Plasma Blast - Fires plasma projectile at enemy. Attack disabled when Drenched

  • Spinning Tail Strike - Short-range spinning bludgeon attack with tail.

  • Rising Head Bash - Jumps at enemy using head as bludgeon; opportunity for immediate counter-attack from enemy should it miss.

Redeye Watchers, notwithstanding their increased damage resistance, are still among the weakest of all machines. They can be ambushed and killed with a single Silent Strike, or damaged and then killed by a single subsequent Critical Hit, just like Watchers. Also like Watchers, Burn states inflict enough damage to kill them before dissipating. Their only substantial tactical superiority over Watchers lies in their preference for ranged combat and their somewhat higher damage resistance.

The main thing to take away from this is Redeye Watchers have their weak spots completely uncovered. All it takes is a good Precision Arrow to a Redeye Watcher's eye and it will usually kill them instantly if hit correctly, especially when overdrawn.

Once you’ve got the Redeye Watcher figured out, you’ll be handling these sneaky spies like a professional. They might think they’re the stealthy masterminds of the machine world, but with your skills, they’ll be more of a minor inconvenience than a major threat. Just remember: when they start signaling for backup, it’s less of a strategic move and more of a cry for help because they didn’t realise they were dealing with Aloy. Keep your cool, and you’ll send them back to their shadows in no time!

The Widemaw: Colossal Maelstrom of the Swamps
First encountered after entering the Forbidden West during The Embassy, the Widemaw is a large, hippo-like acquisition machine that uses its vacuum unit to inhale resources. It can also use this suction device as a weapon, causing deadly ice whirlwinds and reeling Aloy in to unleash devastating melee attacks. Widemaws travel in packs, making them a deadly adversary early into your adventure, especially as they also wield a range of deadly projectiles and are strong against every elemental type, excepting purgewater. They're worth taking down for their resources though, holding some particularly useful loot.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Widemaws:

Widemaws are usually found in groups along bodies of water, where they turn ground and plants into Metal Fertilizer Pods, which they eject as they move. According to the Utaru metalweaver Kue, these pods are made of the strongest metal he has ever woven.

The Widemaw can easily pull in any threat with its vacuum tube, and its jaw is able to chomp anything flat. Its backside isn't safe either, as the turbines can do the same thing. It can easily pull together massive mounds of dirt into a rock, then reverse the vacuum's direction to shoot it a long distance.

During combat, Widemaws can enter an overcharge mode by inhaling a Metal Fertilizer Pod. This state lasts for 30 seconds and boosts damage by 25%, along with increasing their attack speed and range. Visually, it is represented by their tusks and vacuum unit glowing red along with fire and steam coming out of vents on its body.

  • Cyclone Drag - Sucks target into melee range before following up with Slosh Chomp. Also used to vacuum nearby Metal Fertilizer Pods to enter Overcharged state.

  • Tusk Charge - Charges at full speed to ram target. Attack disabled when in the adhesive state.

  • Slosh Chomp - Bites while sweeping from left to right, releasing a blast of Purgewater as its jaws shut. Purgewater damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Hurricane Haul - Vacuum Turbines open to pull target within melee range.

  • Sludge Spew - Lifts head and spits a series of 10 mud projectiles coated in Purgewater. Each projectile creates a small explosion on impact and leaves a residual Purgewater damage area.

  • Sludge Vacuum - Inhales with Vacuum Unit, building up mud in its mouth. Snaps jaw shut to release compressed air and Purgewater, leaving lingering pools of Purgewater on the ground.

  • Sludge Bomb - Uses Vacuum Mouth to form large ball of mud coated in Purgewater before spitting it at target. Mud ball bounces, generating residual Purgewater damage areas before exploding when colliding with target or obstacle.

Widemaws are strong against Fire, Frost, Shock, Acid, and Plasma Damage, making them difficult to defeat with most elemental weapons. However, they are weak against Purgewater Damage, so if you have a weapon with Purgewater ammo, then use it.

As you would have seen above, the Widemaw has an attack that will allow it to suck players in with a vacuum mechanic and then shoot projectiles out causing massive amounts of damage. A great way to get an advantage in a battle with one of these machines is to take out their Vacuum Turbines. This will disable their vacuum attacks, saving players lots of HP in battle.

I also reccomend for the easiest takedown, to use any ropecaster, and then fully charge the rope once, then use the penetrating rope to finish the job, repeat this for any other widemaws. Now act quickly, but use frost arrows to hit the armour plates. This is a quite interesting technique for when you hit the enemy while the enemy is tied down, it will decrease the state allowing it to escape much sooner. However when you hit an amour plate it will drastically reduce impact damage, BUT it wont decrease elemental buildup, so hit an armour plate on its legs or near its back, and then you should be able to easily give it a few sharpshot arrows and it will nearly be dead, repeat this process and ta-da!

After you’ve bested these gigantic, gadget-laden gluttons, you’ll find they’re not quite the insurmountable behemoths they first appeared to be. Sure, they might seem like a cross between a vacuum cleaner and a wrecking ball, but with a little strategy, you’ll turn their rampaging antics into a source of useful loot. And if they start making a scene like they're auditioning for a role in a catastrophe film, just remember: you’re not just fighting a machine—you’re showing a mechanical monster who’s boss and giving it a lesson in simple manners!

The Clawstrider: Raptor of Ruin
First seen during Aloy's brutal introduction to Regalla in The (and subsequently encountered throughout the various realms of the Forbidden West), Clawstriders are a combat machine that closely resembles a velociraptor. As you'd imagine for a robot designed to mimic one of the deadliest creatures of the Cretaceous period, they aren't particularly friendly and will pull out all the stops to make sure Aloy doesn't escape their clutches in one piece.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Clawstriders:

Tip number one with these guys is that, regardless of how long you've spent honing Aloy into a melee god, close-quarters combat is not your friend. Although they look small enough that you could use the Nora Warrior skill to your advantage here, Clawstriders will tank through damage like Hulk Hogan seconds before landing a devastating leg drop.

  • Melee Flurry - The Clawstrider will unleash a flurry of fast attacks, requiring Aloy to dodge out of the way to avoid them.

  • Razor Tail Swipe - An aerial attack where the Clawstrider launches itself into the air and swipes its tail at Aloy, inflicting a significant amount of damage.

  • Sonic Blast - The Clawstrider stands on its hind legs and emits a sonic pulse from its chest, disorientating Aloy and preventing her from using her weapons temporarily.

  • Backup Call - A scream that alerts other nearby machines to Aloy's presence.

  • Elemental Projectile - Elemental Clawstriders will fire a large single projectile at you, knocking you down and inflicting serious damage if it connects. It can deliver these in quick succession.

  • Elemental Triple Projectile - Elemental Clawstriders can fire three projectiles from their tail, inflicting heavy damage if they land.

  • Elemental Mist - An elemental Clawstrider will send a wave of acid or fire at you, causing element buildup if Aloy's in the line of fire.

  • Elemental Area of Effect Attack - An elemental Clawstrider will fall to the ground, emitting a wide cloud of acid or fire, hitting Aloy with elemental build up.

In short, they won't be staggered by anything you throw at them, so your best bet is to stay away as much as possible and pick them apart with some well-placed projectiles. In terms of aiming for specific components, the tail should be at the top of your priority list.

The base variant of Clawstrider will constantly fall back on its tail whip, and while you'll quickly learn to dodge the predictable move, it can drain your health if it hits. Removing the tail can be tricky, but a good tip is to lean on a shredder gauntlet. Managing to get a tearing shredder shot on target will help you remove the tail quickly, so you can focus on dodging the Clawstrider's attacks rather than lining up arrows.

With the tail off, you can now try and hit the resource container on the Clawstrider's back for more damage or, if you're feeling lucky, aim an electric projectile at the sparker beneath its torso. Doing so will detonate the component, inflicting a lot of damage.

As for Elemental Clawstriders, playing at range can actually be just as risky as getting in close, so you'll want to make sure you're quickly shutting down all of its projectile capabilities. One objective here stays the same: the tail's your prime target. Although the standard Clawstrider mostly uses the tail for melee, elemental Clawstriders will use their tail to throw a trio of projectiles at you, which do a lot of damage.

Use the same strategy as last time to detach the tail. You'll then be able to use the tail as a turret, which is a very handy way to turn the tide on a Clawstrider. Regardless, now the tail is gone, turn your attention to the sac on the Clawstrider's stomach. This will be glowing green (for metalbite) or orange (for blaze) depending on the type of Clawstrider you're facing. Dismantle this ASAP to disable its elemental abilities.

With that done, you'll just be dealing with a typical Clawstrider without the ranged move set, so pick away at it from afar and you should take down your prey.

Two things worth noting with the Clawstrider:

  • Traps are a risky play with these robotic raptors. They'll leap over tripwires, skirt around standard traps and refuse to stay in one spot long enough for blast slings to make much of a dent. Don't bother wasting your traps on an enemy that's too fast to lockdown.
  • Clawstriders and stealth are a poor mix. While you can get a silent strike on them (nixing a good amount of health), they'll turn on you and be in prime position to unleash a flurry of strikes. Seeing as they often travel in packs, it's best to pick your shots from far away.

Surviving an encounter with the Clawstrider isn't just about skill; it's about showing these mechanical raptors who’s boss. So, when you find yourself face-to-face with one, just channel your inner dinosaur wrangler. And remember, no matter how fierce they seem, there's always room for a little humor—like imagining them auditioning for a prehistoric talent show and you being the judge who decides their fate. With Aloy’s prowess and your quick thinking, you’ll turn these metal beasts into nothing more than the punchline of your adventure!

The Corruptor: Relic of Destruction
A relic of a bygone era, Corruptors are a rare enemy type encountered by Aloy for the first time during the Faro's Tomb mission. They can be encountered after that during the arena quests, however, they won't spawn in the open world like standard enemies. As discovered during the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, Corruptors are a type of military machine from the old world and were designed by Faro Automated Solutions. They are equipped with advanced weaponry and will overwhelm their opponents with heavy firepower.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Corruptors:

Corruptors are extremely fast and nimble. They employ a variety of ranged and melee attacks, including a melee attack in which they execute a crushing leap onto the enemy. A Corruptor is capable of utilising its electronic warfare capability to control other machines and make them fight alongside it, quickly plunging an enemy into a fight against overwhelming odds.

  • Explosive Spikes - Fires three explosive spikes at its target. Will not fire if there's a chance any Corruptor is hit.

  • Grenade Launcher - Launches grenade directly towards Aloy that splits and scatters before impact, leaving a wide area of fire.

  • Rock Throw - Tail pierces ground and pulls up a boulder, throwing at Aloy. If target is moving sideways, the boulder is thrown in a predicted location.

  • Tail Strike - Tail strikes over its head and stabs into the ground directly in front of it.

  • Dirt Blast - Whips its tail around and diagonally into the ground.

  • Jump Attack - Leaps high into the air, landing on top of its target. Attack disabled when inflicted with the adhesive state.

Corruptors have two significant weakness: due to centuries of being buried, they are particularly vulnerable to weapons that utilize fire, and they are prone to overheating. When they overheat, they expose a cooling rod. Ranged attacks that hit this component inflict significant damage to the Corruptor.

When it comes to defeating Corruptors, your main focus will be disabling their projectile attacks, which come from both the Spike and Grenade Launcher. Your best bet at destroying these components will be using a Hunting or Sharpshot bow with high Tear damage. Once you have dealt with the Corruptors projectiles, you'll want to turn your focus towards their weak spot, the Heat Core. Accessing the Heat Core isn't easy, as it'll only appear when the machine overheats, which is when the component is especially vulnerable to damage.

Dealing with a Corruptor can feel like stepping into a time machine straight to a war zone. But remember, even ancient military machines have their off days. So, when you're up against one, just think of it as taking on a grumpy old relic that forgot to retire. With a bit of skill and some clever manoeuvring, you'll show these mechanical antiques that their prime was centuries ago—and that Aloy is the new face of the future. And who knows, maybe after you’ve dismantled it, you can sell its parts on eBay as vintage collectables!

The Bellowback: Juggernaut of Calamity
Encountered once Aloy makes her way beyond the mountains following The Dying Lands quest, the Bellowback is a large transport machine with a giant sac of volatile liquid on its back. It can launch elemental attacks at Aloy or use its size and speed to charge her.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Bellowbacks:

The most consistent way to finish off a Bellowback is coincidentally to target its most noticeable feature. See that giant elemental sac of glowing machine goop on its back? Yep, that's where you want to point your arrow for the most effective (and satisfying) takedown. If you use the sharp shot bow, you should be able to take out the component in just a few hits, with the sac exploding and inflicting status damage. It'll also prevent it from using elemental attacks, allowing you to lay into it from afar.

  • Elemental Projectile - The Bellowback fires a large, boulder-like projectile corresponding to its elemental type, inflicting huge damage.

  • Elemental Beam - The Bellowback fires a beam of elemental damage that lasts for a long time, inflicting damage as long as Aloy stands in the line of fire.

  • Elemental Spin Attack - The Bellowback spins in a circle, unleashing an area of effect elemental attack that damages Aloy if she's in the near vicinity.

  • Charge - The Bellowback charges forward, knocking Aloy to the ground.

  • Tail Whip - The Bellowback whacks Aloy with its tail.

Once that's done, you can follow up the damage with a similar attack, this time focusing exclusively on the creature's exposed gullet. It's not hard to miss, as the hanging sac is just below its head and will contain the same glowing elemental goop as before. Hit it with some sharp shot arrows to set off a second explosion and leave the Bellowback on its last legs.

The two-hit combo of taking out the sacs should allow you to finish off the Bellowback pretty quickly, however, there is a cost. You won't be able to recover the loot in either of those sacs. For those who are looking for some additional resources, your best bet is to get an electrical projectile and aim it at the three sparkers located underneath the Bellowback. These will detonate, knocking off a lot of health.

You can also rely heavily on traps (consider which elemental type of Bellowback you're battling before picking one). Bellowbacks don't jump, so will easily walk into any traps you place in their path. It's worth noting as well that the antenna on the Bellowback's back can signal for help, so it's worth nixing that while in stealth unless you want to fight flocks of Fanghorns while attempting to fell your prey.

Battling a Bellowback can seem like you’ve walked straight into a hazardous water fight with a particularly grumpy participant. Its elemental attacks and charging maneuvers might make it seem like it’s auditioning for a role in a disaster movie. But with some clever tactics and a steady aim, you’ll turn this oversized hazard into a splashy memory. And who knows, once you've bested it, you might find yourself reminiscing about your epic showdown with a smile—just maybe avoid inviting it to your next water balloon fight!

The Glinthawk: Skybound Adversary of the Tempest
A flying machine first encountered after Aloy enters the west during The Embassy, Glinthawks patrol the realm from the skies, stalking their enemies from above before unleashing brutal aerial attacks. You can usually find these airborne machines in packs, complimenting their relatively low health pool by overwhelming their foes with backup.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Glinthawks:

Glinhawks congregate in flocks of 3 or 4, perched on or circling above high areas such as cliffs, mountains, and mesas. Flocks are found in every known tribe’s territory. Being aerial, they can easily see destroyed machine chassis, in which case they will alight on it and scavenge it, or humans, in which case they will attack. Upon spying a perceived threat or hearing a loud unusual noise, they fly in and hover over the area to investigate.

Glinthawks employ ranged elemental attacks in which they fire or drop elemental projectiles from their elemental sacs at a perceived threat while hovering. The element the Glinthawk employs varies depending on its variant, such as Fire and Freeze. The only element Glinthawks can deploy in Horizon Zero Dawn is freeze. They tend to bombard the aggressor with projectiles of their element by either directly throwing or dropping them. Hovering at close range, they resort to a melee attack in which they swoop down, slashing with the claws on their feet.

  • Elemental Spit - Spits elemental projectiles that explode on impact and leaves a damaging residual pool of matching element. Often spits multiple projectiles. Attack disabled when Drenched.

  • Bombing Run - Rises up while hovering, then flies in a straight trajectory while dropping a series of elemental bombs directly below. Each bomb explodes on impact and leaves a residual damage area of the matching element.

  • Claw Slash - Rises up while hovering, then swoops down to slash multiple times with talons. Attack disabled when afflicted with enough adhesive ammo.

If you want to take these fearsome fows down most efficently, take note of these two components -

  • Beak: This is their primary melee weapon. It can be detached with Tear ammo and once it is detached, the ability is disabled.

  • Chillwater Sac: This is located on its chest and is used for Frost attacks. Damage it and it will explode, thereby damaging the Glinthawk and disabling this attack.

The Glinthawks are challenging in that they like to stay in the air and attack you with their Frost attack from afar. If you damage their components you have a chance to knock them down. If you have a Ropecaster or anything that can tether them to the ground, that would be useful in this fight. Usually by the point you meet them you should have upgraded your gear slightly, but it can get a little chaotic with the amount of Glinthawks in the vicinity.

Taking on a Glinthawk is like battling an airborne squad of disgruntled pigeons who have just discovered your lunch plans. With their penchant for swooping in from above and their knack for working in packs, you might feel like you're the main act in an aerial circus. But once you’ve outmaneuvered these feathery foes and sent them packing, you’ll have proven yourself a true sky warrior. And hey, if you ever find yourself yearning for a bird’s-eye view of the Forbidden West, just remember: it’s less about the altitude and more about keeping your lunch safe from the skies!

The Shell-Walker: Armored Warden of the Wastes
A crab-like transport machine, the Shell-Walker is a common foe Aloy will have to evade during her adventure across the world of Horizon Forbidden West. Equipped with an energy shield and shock cannon, it'll put up a fight to defend the cargo on its back. Shell-Walkers can be found on their own, but they'll also crop up in conveys, being defended by allied machines wandering the world.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Shell-Walkers:

Shell-Walkers attack humans on sight. Upon identifying a human, a Shell-Walker will emit a loud, angry metallic warble, alerting other nearby Shell-Walkers or other machines, raise its energy shield and let fly at the human with shots from its lightning gun. If the human is at close range, it will resort to melee attacks. Shell-Walkers usually walk in a slow, precise manner. However when attacking, they ambulate with surprising speed. When engaging a perceived threat, a Shell-Walker ambulates in a manner that always keeps it facing the threat, allowing its energy shield to be most effective.

  • Shield Claw Swipe - Hops forward and swipes with its Shield Claw.

  • Multi Clap Snap - Jumps 3 times in quick succession while snapping with its Lightning Gun claw.

  • Claw Combo - Three-hit lunging combo with both claws. Stops combo if it lands a hit.

  • Advancing Electric Shot - Fires a single shock orb from Lightning Gun as it advances towards target. Orb generates a residual shock damage area on impact.

  • Electric Shot Homing - Charges Lightning Gun and fires a shock orb that tracks target as it travels. Explodes on impact and generates a residual shock damage area.

  • 360 Electric Discharge - Unleashes a 360 degree shock blast in a large area surrounding its body. Attack disabled when drenched with purgewater ammo.

The Shell-walker has two claws that it uses for both offense and defense. Taking out both claws before it has a chance to use them puts you in a good position to end the encounter before it even begins.

A Shell-walker may also be deprived of its energy shield by destroying the generator. Strikes with explosive ammunition such as Blast Bombs or high-damage arrows such as Precision Arrows will destroy the generator. A single strike with a Tearblast Arrow or the Tearblaster will tear the generator off the limb that carries it. If a Tearblast Arrow explodes directly beneath the Shell-Walker’s power generator, it causes a Shock explosion that stuns the machine.

Facing a Shell-Walker might feel like you're battling a robotic crab with a serious case of territorial anxiety. Its energy shield and shock cannon make it a formidable foe, but once you’ve outwitted this shell-covered defender, you’ll have earned your place as the ultimate cargo disruptor. Just remember: if you ever need a lesson in effective cargo management—or a laugh at a crab's expense—this mechanical crustacean is your go-to. And next time you see one scuttling by, give a nod to your victory—it’s not every day you get to outshine a machine that’s basically the delivery service of the Forbidden West!

The Stalker: Sovereign of the Shadow Realm
A stealth-focused enemy lurking in the Forbidden West's jungles (which can be accessed after crossing the mountains during The Dying Lands mission, Stalkers can usually be found hiding in trees while camouflaged. Areas where these machines roam will usually be littered with bombs, forcing Aloy to tread carefully. Stalkers will usually ambush Aloy without warning, dropping down on her and landing huge melee strikes. The best way to beat them is to turn their weapons against them, using arrows to detonate the powerful bombs they scatter across the battlefield. This is a significantly tough enemy to take down, and players should approach the fight with preparation!

Tips and Tricks for defeating Stalkers:

The Stalker’s most lethal weapon is its dart gun, which can kill a human with one shot. Even though the Stalker must momentarily de-cloak to use it, an unsuspecting human never sees the shot coming, since the Stalker fires it from long range. At closer ranges, a Stalker deploys proximity mines that damage and distract an enemy. Unlike the dart gun, a Stalker can deploy these mines while cloaked. It drops these mines as it swiftly changes its position, its cloak preventing it from being tracked. Stalker mines can be detonated by shooting them, and will typically insta-kill Stalkers with 3-4 mines. Though built for stealth and ambush, Stalkers are capable of formidable melee attacks, slashing with their claws and employing a swift bludgeon attack with their tails.

  • Dart Gun Shot - Up to 3 shots at enemy with dart gun

  • Mine Spread - Drops 2 proximity mines from each actively attached launcher

  • Mandible Stab - Swipe with jaw after pouncing

  • Back Swipe - Quickly turns to face Aloy while slashing with claws

  • Tail Swipe 360 - 360-degree bludgeon attack with tail

Stalkers are more vulnerable to Shock attacks than other machines. Repeated attacks with weapons that deal Shock damage will quickly stun a Stalker. This vulnerability is absent in Daemonic and Apex Stalkers; indeed, like all Daemonic Machines, they are highly Shock-resistant. Also, their head is a known weakpoint. A triple-arrow shot from a strong enough power bow into the head can destroy one in a single shot.

In Forbidden West, shooting their mines as they are deployed will detonate them, dealing heavy damage or outright destroying the Stalker.

Another easy way is to instead of the triple-arrow shot, is to use the focused shot or the braced shot technique for the sharpshot bow, and if shot in a weak point that will more often than not instantly kill the stalker or for an apex quickly deplete around 3/4 of its entire health-bar, also depending on your weapons quality and upgraded instances.

Taking down a Stalker is like dealing with that one overly ambitious office coworker who sneaks up on you from the shadows—only in this case, the office is a battleground and the coworker is a relentless mechanical menace. Outwitting this master of stealth and treachery proves you’ve got nerves of steel and a knack for staying cool under pressure. After surviving a Stalker encounter, you can confidently strut into the Forbidden West knowing you’ve bested the sneakiest of the bunch. Just don’t be surprised if you catch yourself double-checking your six every time you hear a rustle—old habits die hard, even in the game of life and death!

The Grimhorn: Siege Engine of Wrath
A heavily-armed evolution of the Plowhorn, the Grimhorn is a combat machine that can use a mix of melee and ranged attacks to dismantle its foes. Aloy comes face to face with these machines for the first time during the Dying Lands mission, teaming with Varl and Zo to take one down. From its cluster launcher to its brutal horns, Grimhorn's are a tough enemy if you don't come prepared. If you're going after one, you'll want to make sure you're packing powerful weapons and gear.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Grimhorns:

Grimhorns are much more dangerous than Plowhorns, being able to spew flames from its horns and shoot cluster rockets from its launchers. The launchers can be shot off and used as a weapon.

  • Piercing Charge - Charges at high speed to ram target, or to transition into Impaling Slash. Attack disabled when Slowed.

  • Impaling Dredger - Dives at target while slamming both horns into ground. Skids on landing, dealing damage with its body.

  • Scorching Meteor Shower - Lobs two flaming projectiles from its horns, exploding on impact and leaving residual Fire damage areas. Attack disabled when drenched with purgewater.

  • Scorching Slam - Coats horns in flames and rises on hind legs before dropping forward and slamming the ground, creating a Fire explosion. Generates residual Fire damage areas. Fire damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Cluster Air Strike - Fires two discs from Cluster Launchers, hovering in the air before splitting into multiple explosives that detonate on impact.

To defeat the Grimhorn, the player should use Purgewater and Acid-based damage since that is its weakness. If the player is able to hit the Grimhorn with enough Acid damage, it will enter a Corroding state. This means the metal on its body will start to melt off and expose some of its weaknesses. As the first begins, run to the nearby pillar and use the Grapple Point to get on top. Once at the top, aim at the Grimhorn and continue to pelt it with acid arrows.

Another way is While using Aloy's bow she can use the Tear Damage arrows to make the Grimhorn's Cluster Launcher fall off. Aloy can then grab it and use it against the Grimhorn for extra damage. The Grimhorn also won't be alone as it will have smaller machines for support. Focus on the smaller machines first before battling the Grimhorn if there are any surrounding it, you can also tie down the lot with a ropecaster if you feel you are getting overwhelmed too easily so you can more effectively single them out!

Tackling a Grimhorn might feel like stepping into a high-stakes game of dodgeball with a very aggressive opponent. Its mix of melee and ranged attacks can make it seem like it’s trying to outdo every other machine in the arena. But with a bit of strategy and some well-placed shots, you'll soon be adding this formidable foe to your victory list. Just remember, once you’ve dealt with the Grimhorn, you’ll have a great story to tell—and probably a newfound appreciation for quieter days!

The Ravager: Overlord of the Abyss
An intimidating, agile, predatorial beast, the Ravager is one of the fiercest combat machines roaming the Forbidden West. You'll likely experience them for the first time during the Shadow in the West side mission, although they also patrol the open world. Wielding powerful claws and a cannon strapped to its back, the Ravager won't hold back when it charges into battle. Aloy will have to focus fire on its various components if she wants a chance to bring it down for good.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Ravagers:

Before engaging the Ravager, it’s essential to prepare for a stealthy approach unless of course you have a maxed out legendary weapon, in that case just freeze it and a focus shot should do the trick lol. Utilise tall grass or any available cover to stay hidden from the machine’s line of sight. Begin by targeting and removing the Ravager’s cannon while remaining concealed. To do this effectively, equip arrows that have massive tear capabilities, which are specifically designed to strip away armour and canisters without causing explosive damage. This approach prevents drawing unnecessary attention from other machines in the vicinity. This will usually include either the hunter bow with triple notch or tearblast arrows. Either will do, however as to keep the ravager undetected and still in the yellow inquisitive state, you can't hit it with more than one arrow while its suspicious so you will have to pop a smoke bomb if you go with the hunter bow approach since you will be firing 3 arrows at once! You also have to be extremely wary of its multitudinous attacks -

  • Claw Swipe - Single lunging claw swipe

  • Berserker Fury - Multiple lunging claw slashes

  • Shock Jaw Smash - Electrically charged lunging bite. Shock damage disabled when Drenched

  • Leaping Jaw Crash - Single swipe with jaw after pouncing. Attack disabled when slowed.

  • Shock Cocoon - Defensive radial electric cocoon that spreads a 360 degree radius.

  • Thunderous floor - Electrifies jaws and smashes them into the ground, unleashing a wave of Shock that travels forward. Attack disabled when hit with enough purgewater ammo.

In case the Ravager becomes alerted to your presence, it's crucial to create distance and let the alert status dissipate. This can be done by hiding and waiting until the machine's awareness level returns to normal. To distract one Ravager, use a single rock or other environmental objects to lure it away from its partner. This tactic allows the other Ravager to wander off far enough to avoid simultaneous engagements, reducing the complexity of the battle.

Once you have isolated one Ravager, if you possess glue weapons, use them to immobilise your target. Strike the Ravager with glue, and then quickly back away while continuing to shoot from a distance. Aim to maintain a safe distance from the other Ravager to avoid accidental engagement. This distance helps you stay clear of the other machine’s detection range while focusing on your primary target.

When the isolated Ravager charges at you, it’s crucial to dodge or slide toward the machine instead of away. This technique minimises the risk of being hit by its follow-up swipe or shock wave attack. By moving toward the Ravager during its charge, you can avoid the damage it would inflict if you were to roll away. After successfully dodging, prepare to counterattack.

After evading the Ravager’s charge, focus on using elemental arrows to target its canisters. These canisters are weak points that, when hit with the appropriate elemental arrows, will cause significant damage and reduce the machine's combat effectiveness. Elemental arrows can be particularly effective against the Ravager’s various attack types and weaknesses. Make sure to aim precisely at these canisters to maximize your damage output.

Throughout the battle, keep an eye on the Ravager’s movement patterns and attack sequences. The machine’s powerful claws and ranged attacks can inflict considerable damage, so patience and strategic positioning are key. Avoid rushing in without a plan, as this can lead to overwhelming damage and a higher risk of failure. Instead, use a combination of stealth, tactical engagement, and precise attacks to gradually weaken and eventually bring down the Ravager.

Facing a Ravager might feel like you've stumbled into an intense game of "don't get mauled by the mechanical beast," but with these tactics, you can turn the encounter into your own personal victory dance. Picture it: you’re dodging its attacks and launching glue bombs like you’re the world’s most unorthodox decorator, all while turning its elemental canisters into fireworks. It’s a battle of wits and agility where your moves are as smooth as a choreographed dance and your arrows are as precise as a laser-guided confetti cannon. With these strategies in hand, you’ll transform a fierce fight into a dazzling display of skill—and maybe even leave the Ravager wondering if it’s missing out on a career as a stunt double in an action movie!

The Snapmaw: Titan of Chilling Depths
A large, crocodile-inspired acquisition machine, the Snapmaw can be found after traversing past the mountains during The Sea of Sands quest. This hulking machine is usually swimming beneath the water (where it can and will attack Aloy), but it also has the ability to pursue its prey onto land. Not only does the Snapmaw have a powerful bite and brutal melee attacks, it can also fire ice and purgewater projectiles which do a ton of damage. Overall, it's a machine that's best approached later into Aloy's adventure, when she has some powerful weapons that can bring the mechanical beast down quickly.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Snapmaws:

Like crocodiles, a Snapmaw’s apparent sloth belies the great speed it displays when confronting a perceived threat. Snapmaws employ a ranged attack in which they belch projectiles of Chillwater at an enemy. These are similar to the projectiles hurled by Glinthawks from their beaks and, like them, cause damage, pain and markedly reduced ability to move in human enemies, and will freeze machine enemies such as corrupted or overridden machines provided enough of them hit home. Additionally, they employ melee attacks such as lunging jumps at an enemy, snapping with their jaws, and using their tails as bludgeons. They are also capable of attacking perceived enemies in water, such as swimming humans.

  • Spin Attack - Lunges forward while spinning 180 degrees in a sweeping motion with its tail.

  • Frost Mortar - Spits a series of 5 Frost projectiles in arcing trajectory. Projectiles create an explosion and leaves a residual Frost damage area. Attack disabled when Drenched.

  • Jump Attack - Winds up at a distance before leaping at Aloy.

  • Aerial Bite - Performs a short-range jump and bites once.

  • Snap Bite - Quickly snaps towards Aloy with its jaws.

  • Lunging Jaw Snap - While swimming on surface, dives underwater and emerges while biting twice moving forward. Underwater, surges forward while snapping jaw twice.

As for how to defeat them, a Snapmaw’s major structural and tactical weakness is its Freeze Sac. Strikes on it from high-powered impact ammunition such as Precision Arrows trigger a corresponding elemental explosion that freezes the machine and disables its ranged Freeze-based attacks. The Freeze effect of the explosion is powerful enough to overcome a Daemonic Snapmaw’s high resistance to elemental attacks. Additionally, Snapmaws are particularly susceptible to weapons that utilise fire, though the inflicted damage is less with a Daemonic Snapmaw, as is the number of strikes needed to induce a Burn state.

Not only that but since the machine is frozen, its a perfect time to follow up with a sharpshot bow focus shot to one of the weak-points, that mainly being the dispersal tanks, lined along its back as they are by far the easiest to hit, and since the snapmaw will be frozen, this allows Aloy to hit the focused shot for a 2.5x damage multiplier. In other words, over double the damage from a regular shot!

Battling a Snapmaw is like trying to wrestle a mechanical dragon in a frozen water park. Its surprise water ambushes and land-based assaults can make you feel like you’re in the middle of a high-stakes aquatic circus. But with these strategies, you’ll turn this ferocious leviathan into a distant memory. Imagine it: you’re dodging its icy projectiles and slashing at its vulnerable spots, all while it flails about like an oversized mechanical marionette. With a well-executed plan and a touch of bravado, you’ll make the Snapmaw regret ever stepping out of its watery domain—just remember to pack some serious firepower and a good sense of sanity for this unforgettable showdown!

The Sunwing: Radiant Conqueror of the Skies
A flying acquisition machine, the Sunwing can be found in various parts of Horizon Forbidden West's world. Powered by solar energy gathered from the panels on its wings, it can cause a lot of damage to Aloy using plasma elemental attacks.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Sunwings:

Sunwings are pesky machines and can be a real pain to take down. They have the ability to attack from the air or ground and will shoot players with Plasma elemental attacks. This can do devastating amounts of damage. Taking out the Plasma Fin on top of their head will cause an explosion, damage the machine, and disable any plasma attacks. Players can attack machines with different kinds of elemental attacks. Elemental attacks in the game include Fire, Shock, Frost, Plasma, Purgewater, and Acid. The Sunwing will be weak to damage from Purgewater attacks. They are strong against damage from Plasma attacks.

  • Burst Defender - Enters a fortified stance with wings outstretched and Shield Casters activated, then fires bursts of plasma. Attack disabled when Drenched.

  • Air Burst - Hovers and strafes around Aloy while firing plasma in bursts.

  • Power Fling - Shoots a plasma beam into the ground, then rips out a chunk of plasma-infused boulder with its talons before throwing at Aloy. Generates a plasma explosion on impact. Plasma damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Aerial Plasma Sweep - Backflips in the air and cleaves the ground with a beam of plasma. Generates a trail of plasma that shortly detonates.

  • Ground Breaker - Lunges forward, plowing its beak into the ground. Generates shockwave and a trail of plasma that shortly detonates. Plasma damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Ascending Burster - Takes off vertically, generating a wind blast that knocks nearby targets back while simultaneously firing a plasma beam beneath it.

Really in truth there isn't much information on the sunwings apart from this in terms of taking them down, but what I will say from my own personal experience is that I find that leaving them airborne makes them an extremely hard target, extremely when trying to procure its shield casters, so I would recommend using a ropecaster to tie them down to prevent their airborne antics from interrupting too many of their evasive manouevers.

Facing the Sunwing is like having an uninvited guest who insists on doing their own flashy light show. As it zooms around, channelling the sun’s power into plasma attacks, it might feel like you’ve accidentally stumbled onto a sci-fi set. But with a bit of strategy, you’ll turn this aerial diva into your personal spotlight moment. Outmanoeuvre its dazzling strikes, and you might just find yourself basking in the glow of victory—minus the over-the-top special effects!

The Clamberjaw: Nemesis of Jungle Chaos
Discovered lurking in the depths of the Forbidden West's jungles, the Clamberjaw is an ape-like acquisition machine that can climb walls, attack with razor-sharp claws and launch fire attacks at foes. They're agile creatures that can pose a major threat to Aloy if she's unprepared, so make sure to keep stocked up on purgewater as you wander the jungle. Clamberjaws are worth taking down to recover some great loot, whether you're looking to upgrade weapons or stock up on crafting materials.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Clamberjaws:

The Clamberjaw is fierce, fast and agile. It uses its claws and tail to salvage scrap from machine carcasses or scrap piles. It can cling to walls with ease and possesses a range of abilities that debilitate opponents, including throwing flaming scrap, concussive screeches, and using chemicals in their tails that prevent the consumption of items.

  • Fist Slam Frenzy - Three-hit combo with its claws. Only follows up if the target is in range if it misses.

  • Tearing Tackle - Leaps towards Aloy and delivers a powerful bite with its jaws. Attack disabled when Slowed.

  • Noxious Tail Slash - Hops at Aloy and whips Tail Duster in a 360 degree spinning motion, releasing a cloud of noxious fumes.

  • Elemental Shrapnel Spit - Spits out pieces of Fire-infused shrapnel in a spread, exploding on impact and generating a residual Fire damage area. Fire damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Snatch and Hurl - Spins 360 degrees and launches scrap held by Tail Duster at target. Scrap generates a trail of noxious fumes and an explosion on impact.

  • Terror Screech - Inflates Concussion Sacs and lets out a deafening scream.

As for defeating them, if you even dare lol, the majority of Clamberjaws excepting the apex variants are weak against Purgewater damage and strong versus Fire and Plasma damage.

They have a Concussion Sac on the sides of their face that will explode when destroyed. Destroying the Sac will also disable concussion attacks. There are Sparkers on their shoulders that will explode when shot by Shock damage. On their hind legs are Blaze Sacs when will explode when destroyed. Their Tail Duster spreads and coats projectiles in gas. This is a key upgrade resource, so detach it if you can.

Still, Clamberjaws will be a tough fight. They have a stomp attack that calls up rocks from the ground. They will also jump onto the mountain cliffs and use that to propel them to wherever you are. The Clamberjaws' tail can do significant damage if they get too close to you. Blastslings and Spike Throwers are very useful here.

Engaging a Clamberjaw is the fact you’ve wandered into a high-stakes game of "dodge the jungle gym's most rambunctious acrobat." With its agile leaps and relentless swinging, it’s as if nature decided to design a creature specifically for a chaotic game of tag—only this time, the taggers are armed with claws and a bad attitude. Picture yourself in a dance-off with a feral gymnast whose idea of a good time involves flinging you around like a ragdoll. Mastering this dance requires quick footwork and a knack for dodging—just remember, even the wildest performers eventually take a bow!

The Rollerback: Colossus of Armoured Annihilation
A transport machine covered in plated armour, reminiscent of an Ankylosaurus, the Rollerback lives up to its namesake, curling up into a large ball and rolling at Aloy to inflict massive damage. It has the ability to reattach its plating if it's removed, using a gravity generator to reclaim discarded armour. Aloy can encounter these large machines throughout the Forbidden West, using them to net herself some useful resources and experience.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Rollerbacks:

Rollerbacks might not be the largest and most dangerous machines in the game, but they fight in pairs and have many different attacks.

Fighting two simultaneously might be tricky, especially if an Apex is involved, so you better learn its attacks and patterns before engaging.

Be very careful, though. The Rollerback often combines different attacks to make its pattern harder to read. Play defensively and wait until it uses an attack with a long recovery time.

  • Rolling Charge: This is the Rollerback’s signature attack. It curls and attempts to roll over you. This is a surprisingly fast attack, so it might be pretty hard to dodge if you are close to the machine

  • Rock Attack: The Rollerback might cause some rocks to fly in Aloy’s way when rolling around.

  • Rolling Slam: This attack is scary, and it can be very damaging, but it’s easier to avoid. The Rollerback will use its thrusters to propel itself high up in the air while rolling. Then, it will attempt to land on Aloy.

  • Spinning Tail: This attack is annoying to avoid since the Rollerback’s tail is long. The machine will start spinning while it sweeps its tail in an attempt to hit you. It will keep spinning until it loses its balance.

  • Tail Slam: The Rollerback will use its hammer tail to try to slam Aloy. It will do it multiple times with its back turned to you.

  • Flamethrower: If you are behind the Rollerback, it can use its thrusters to launch flames against you. It can happen right after its Tail Slam.

  • Adhesive Blob: This is a ranged adhesive attack. The Rollerback might try to spit an Adhesive Blob at you, but it is easy to dodge.

Before beginning the fight, take a moment to familiarise yourself with the battlefield. The environment within particular environments can be hard to traverse, with floor pieces and other environmental hazards potentially impeding your movement. Understanding the terrain will help you maneuver more effectively during the battle.

Constantly keep moving; this is not a machine that you'll want to attempt to melee or get within melee distance of. The Rollerback's sheer size and power make close encounters incredibly dangerous. Keeping a safe distance ensures you have enough time to react and evade its formidable attacks.

When facing this colossal opponent, it's crucial to maintain distance to give yourself ample time to dodge its rolling assaults and retaliatory strikes. If you manage to land a significant shot while the Rollerback is mid-attack, you'll cause it to momentarily halt its advance, giving you a brief window of opportunity to adjust your strategy.

Don't underestimate traps! These tools can inflict substantial damage and offer a crucial advantage by allowing you to stay at a safe distance. Utilize traps effectively to weaken the Rollerback while minimizing the risk to yourself.

Facing a Rollerback can feel like you're trapped in a twisted carnival game where the prize is just survival. Picture this: you’re dodging a giant, rolling metal ball that seems to have a personal vendetta against you. It’s like playing dodgeball, but instead of a rubber ball, it’s an armored tank with a gravity-defying stunt show. As you weave through its relentless attacks, just remember: if you can outmaneuver this rolling juggernaut, you'll have bragging rights as the ultimate dodgeball champion of the Forbidden West. And who knows, maybe after the fight, you’ll be able to tell your friends that you survived a robotic version of "Extreme Makeover: Roller Edition!"

The Rockbreaker: Overlord of Subterannian Titans
A returning face from Horizon Zero Dawn, the Rockbreaker is a giant, tunnelling acquisition machine that can use its digging components to move underground. Living up to its namesake, this intimidating machine can launch boulders at its opponents, overwhelming them with a barrage of giant rocks. Rockbreakers are crafty opponents, using their ability to disappear beneath the ground to launch themselves at Aloy. To gain the upper hand, she'll have to use frost and shock attacks to take one down.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Rockbreakers:

Rockbreakers are more susceptible to Freeze attacks than other machines, although putting them in a Freeze state can be difficult as previously explained. They are reliant on their four digging arms for tunneling underground; removal of all four arms prevents them from going underground, thereby disabling all of their subterranean attacks, and reduces their surface speed to a slow, hopping crawl. Ranged weapon strikes on their exhaust ports inflict significant damage. Destruction of each fuel sac triggers a large explosion that will apply the burning effect. Finally, they are unable to dig under watercourses (likely a hardwired safety protocol); thus a hunter can move beyond all of their attacks save their ranged attacks by crossing a river.

  • Dirt Jet - Spews a torrent of rocks and debris in an arcing trajectory.

  • Dirt Volcano - Erupts below Aloy with upper half exposed and spits out burning rocks that rain down and create a Fire explosion on impact and residual Fire damage areas. Fire damage disabled when Drenched.

  • Lunge Bite - Rears back and lunges toward target while biting as it moves along the surface. Attack disabled when Slowed.

  • Spin Attack - Spins 180 degrees while swiping with its tail.

  • Jump Attack - Dives at Aloy when emerging from the ground.

  • Shark Gnaw - Angles body vertically and emerges below target while biting. Can do this up to three times in quick succession.

Rockbreakers are highly reactive to movement. They will breach wherever they sense activity, so either stay stationary or move to solid ground. To your advantage, create a distraction by firing arrows or bombs at a spot away from you. This will lure the Rockbreaker to breach at the distraction site.

Once you’ve lured it, begin by freezing the Rockbreaker with triple shot freeze arrows, modded for maximum freeze effect. Two volleys should suffice to immobilize it. Follow up with triple hardpoint shots to finish it off quickly. This method capitalizes on the Rockbreaker’s immobility to ensure a swift and effective takedown.

For a more tactical approach, utilize full stealth and crouch-walk into the Rockbreaker’s midst. This can be especially effective if you're using two-slot armor to minimize noise. Set up a series of tripcaster traps around the area—aim for around 15 traps. Once in place, toss a rock into the center of the traps and watch as the Rockbreaker surfaces into a catastrophic explosion, courtesy of your carefully laid traps.

When Rockbreakers go underground, they lose their ability to detect your movements. Use this opportunity to sneak around and position yourself strategically. Freezing them while they’re underground and then targeting their blaze sack will result in substantial damage. Alternatively, if you’re able to tie them down while they’re above ground, focus on blowing off their digging claws. Without these, the Rockbreaker becomes significantly less dangerous.

Facing a Rockbreaker can feel like you’ve signed up for an underground rock concert where the band’s biggest hit is “Boulder Storm.” Picture yourself dodging a barrage of flying rocks while your precision arrows transform the Rockbreaker into a giant, malfunctioning disco ball. If you play your cards right, you might even feel like the coolest underground DJ ever, orchestrating a seismic performance with a soundtrack of epic explosions. With these tactics, you’ll turn what could have been a head-banging nightmare into your own personal victory encore. Just remember: when a Rockbreaker’s around, it’s not just about survival—it’s about making sure the show goes out with a bang!

The Behemoth: Wielder of Gravity’s Wrath
A bulky transport machine, the Behemoth is a walking tank that can utilise its anti-gravity system to throw powerful projectiles at its opponents. Aloy can face various Behemoths while she's navigating the open world, although she'll be forced to take one down during the Blood for Blood side quest. Behemoths are powerful creatures that can pose a huge threat to Aloy, so if you're tracking one down, make sure you bring fire or acid weapons.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Behemoths:

Players can attack machines with different kinds of elemental attacks. Elemental attacks in the game include Fire, Shock, Frost, Plasma, Purgewater, and Acid. The Behemoth will be weak to damage from Acid and Fire attacks. They are strong against damage from Frost and Shock attacks

A Behemoth relies on its force loaders for its anti-gravity attacks. Their destruction or removal via pneumatic concussion weapons such as the Tearblaster or ammunition such as Tearblast Arrows therefore disables these attacks. Strikes on its Chillwater canisters with Freeze Arrows cause a damaging Freeze elemental explosion and induces a Freeze state, which makes the Behemoth much more susceptible to damage. Striking the power cell with a Shock Arrow releases a shock elemental explosion and stuns the machine.

  • Grinding Shrapnel Blast - Lowers grinder jaws into ground and spins them to fire rock shrapnel.

  • Gravity Boulder Throw - Uses Force Loaders to form boulder to hurl at target. Cancels into Quake Smash if target moves into close range while boulder is forming.

  • Gravity Purge - Uses Force Loaders to surround itself with rocks, then unleashes a blast that sends them flying in all directions.

  • Charge - Charges at full speed towards Aloy while swinging head from side to side. Attack disabled when Slowed.

  • Quake Smash - Rises on hind legs and smashes down with ram, producing a Tremor effect and explosion of debris beyond the point of impact.

In summary, all six of its Force Loaders are explosive and vulnerable to impact damage, along with being the main source for its most powerful attacks. If you can target these before the Behemoth spots you, it puts you in a good position to ambush this machine before it can use its abilities on you.

Facing the Behemoth can feel like being in the middle of a physics experiment gone awry. As this gravity-defying giant lobs projectiles like a cosmic slingshot, you might think you’ve wandered into a high-stakes game of The Hunger Games with the universe's most uncooperative player. But with some strategic thinking and a few well-placed attacks, you’ll turn this formidable force into a lesson on how to outsmart gravity itself. Keep your wits sharp, your aim steady, and remember—when battling the Behemoth, it’s not just about defying the odds, but making gravity your ally in an epic showdown.

The Dreadwing: Herald of Obsidian Terror
Encountered for the first time during the Seeds of the Past mission, the Dreadwing is a large, bat-inspired combat machine that comes equipped with a range of brutal projectiles, melee attacks and the ability to camouflage. Aloy's initial meeting with the flying machine leads to it appearing across the Forbidden West.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Dreadwings:

As always for fighting tough, relentless combat machines, your best strategy for finishing off a Dreadwing is to dismantle it piece by piece. That means we're aiming for some crucial components throughout this fight, preventing the Dreadwing from unleashing its biggest attacks and inflicting a ton of damage while doing so.

  • Pulse Stomps - While grounded, the Dreadwing moves forwards in a straight line, causing a pulse wave to emerge whenever his claws hit the ground.

  • Melee Flurry - The Dreadwing stands on its hind legs, unleashing a string of brutal strikes using its wings.

  • Dive - While airborne or on the ground, the Dreadwing charges in with a devastating melee attack, causing huge damage if it makes contact.

  • Camouflage - The Dreadwing turns invisible temporarily. It can't be scanned while in this state.

  • Bomb Barrage - The Dreadwing fires a series of explosives at Aloy from afar.

  • Ice Mines - The Dreadwing soars over the battlefield, dropping ice explosives that detonate after a short time on the ground. It frequently does this while camouflaged.

  • Flashbang - The Dreadwing sends out a flash of light that temporarily disorientates Aloy, blinding her and rendering her unable to use her weapons.

  • Acid Spit - The Dreadwing spits acid at Aloy, causing acid build-up and health reduction.

  • Plasma Bombs - The Dreadwing launches plasma explosives from afar, inflicting significant damage.

  • Noxious Gas - Emits a potent gas that prevents Aloy from healing with food or potions.

If you want to bring it down quickly, your best bet is to take something powerful that can dislodge parts with ease, meaning a strong sharpshot or hunting bow will help out a lot. When encountering the Dreadwing firsthand, prioritise aiming for the metalbite sac on its throat, the bomb launchers found on its chest (which can be used against it if detached), the flashblinder ears atop its head and the fangs found beneath its mouth.

Not only will destroying these take a huge chunk of health from the Dreadwing, but it'll also stop it from using its best moves, improving your chances of survival. With those out the way, it's time to focus on bringing it down. You can save a lot of frustration if you manage to knock out its stealth generator, which is located on the lower half of its torso. It'll prevent the machine from turning invisible, meaning you can stay locked on for the duration of the battle.

If you have a weapon that fires purgewater arrows or shock arrows, you can also inflict huge damage to the mechanical beast by hitting the purgewater canisters located on its tail or the sparkers on its shoulders. These will detonate when struck, taking off a lot of HP and giving you a few seconds of stun time to inflict a lot of damage.

Throughout the fight, the main strategy is to make sure you're not being greedy. The Dreadwing has a lot of attacks that can devastate your health bar if they hit, whether that's the bomb barrage, its charge attack, or its ice mines. Keep your distance, use cover and wait for the perfect shots to line up. If you play it smart, the Dreadwing should go down quickly, allowing you to net some crucial resources.

Facing the Dreadwing is like trying to outsmart a winged shadow with a flair for dramatic entrances and exits. This fearsome machine’s ability to blend into the darkness and rain down projectiles makes it feel like you’re fighting a nightmarish magician who’s all tricks and no treats. You’ll need to stay sharp, dodging its attacks while simultaneously hoping your arrows find their mark. It’s a battle of wits where every swoop and swoosh is a reminder that you’re dealing with one of the Forbidden West’s most menacing aerial foes. But with a bit of finesse and a lot of determination, you’ll show this dark flyer that Aloy doesn’t fall for shadowy illusions.

The Tideripper: Leviathan of Frozen Wrath
Introduced during Aloy's salvaging mission in The Sea of Sands, the Tideripper is what you'd get if you meshed the Loch Ness Monster with the Terminator. It's huge, heavily armed and can wipe the floor with Aloy if she isn't careful, making it an intimidating adversary that'll require a sound gameplan to defeat.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Tiderippers:

Tiderippers tend to mostly stick to one core strategy. They'll fire as many water attacks as they can in quick succession before barrelling in with some heavy-hitting melee attacks, meaning if your loadout is weak to purgewater, you'll be in for a rough ride. The benefit is you don't have to worry about other status effects, so grab yourself an armour set that protects against purgewater and be ready for a scrap.

  • Water Blast - The Tideripper fires two jets of water from a pair of cannons attached to its head, inflicting damage and purgewater build-up.

  • Body Slam - The Tideripper jumps into the air and lands on its belly, sending Aloy flying and inflicting a lot of damage. This attack also causes purgewater build-up.

  • Tail Whip - A melee attack that sees the Tideripper spin in a circle, knocking Aloy back.

  • Charge - The Tideripper charges forward, inflicting large amounts of melee damage if it smashes into Aloy.

  • Water Spin - The Tidal Disc on the Tideripper's back begins firing out jets of water, knocking Aloy back if she gets too close and causing purgewater build-up. These jets last for a long time, making it hard to move close to the Tideripper.

  • Boulder Projectile - The Tideripper throws a boulder projectile at Aloy.

  • Call for Backup - The Tideripper uses its Antenna to call for back-up, enlisting the aid of nearby machines.

First things first, you'll want to make sure you're moving as much as possible when fighting this aquatic beast. The Tideripper will do its damndest to lock you down using its water blast and other attacks so it can leap in for huge damage. A good strategy is to wait for it to charge forward, dodge out of the way and then land your attacks while it's repositioning itself to face you. As the Tideripper's a heavy machine without legs, readjusting where it's facing takes some time, meaning you can lay in the damage while avoiding taking any of your own.

Now you're in position, there are a few spots worth aiming at early. If you're just looking to whittle down its health, the blue purgewater sacs beneath its torso and purgewater pouches on its neck are easy to hit, exposed often and do a decent amount of damage when attacked. They limit the purgewater status effects of certain Tideripper attacks, but ultimately, these are more about targeting the machine's health bar than nixing its more powerful moves.

If you're looking to limit how the Tideripper can hurt you, a good strategy is to use a hunter bow (you'll want something with decent power but quick drawback speed) and aim for the two purgewater cannons on either side of its jaw, the tidal disc on its back and the tail.

The cannons will prevent it falling back on its water blast projectile attack, which it favours heavily at long range. As for the tidal disc, it'll stop it from using its water spin move, which it usually deploys in the middle of the fight. Finally, taking down the tail stops it from using its tail whip, nixing one of its more brutal melee moves. With all three attacks down, the Tideripper becomes much less dangerous.

If taking down all three components still hasn't emptied its health bar, use electric arrows and plasma arrows to hit the sparkers and glowblast containers located on its back. If hit with the corresponding arrow, they'll detonate, inflicting huge amounts of damage and finishing off the beast quickly.

Facing the Leviathan of Frozen Wrath, the Tideripper, might feel like you’ve accidentally walked into an arctic water park with a particularly angry lifeguard. With its hydro attacks, it’s as if this machine has decided that your best chance of survival is in a frozen, water torrent of extravaganza. It will end up with you dodging frosty blasts while it tries to turn the arena into a giant slip 'n slide. But with the right tactics, you’ll make it through this chilly ordeal and come out with a victory that’s warmer than its icy demeanor. And hey, once you’ve conquered this frosty foe, you can always brag about being the only one who can handle a cold shower without even flinching!

The Shellsnapper: Warlord of the Brackish Expanse
A gargantuan turtle-like combat machine, the Shellsnapper is essentially what you'd get if you turned Blastoise into a Transformer. This massive machine packs some major firepower and has a huge health pool to boot, making it one of Aloy's most intimidating mechanical foes. You'll mostly come across them in desert/swamp environments, although you'll be forced to take one down during the Burning Blooms side quest.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Shellsnappers:

Seeing as you'll likely come face to face with a Shellsnapper during the first half of Horizon's adventure, they can be a tough enemy to take down, with only a few of their projectiles potentially finishing off Aloy's entire health bar. The main tip here is to find as much cover as possible and to pick it apart slowly but efficiently. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a good spot to hide from ranged strikes, with Shellsnappers usually cropping up in rocky environments.

  • Shoulder Mounted Cannons - The Shellsnapper uses a set of shoulder-mounted cannons to fire rockets at Aloy.

  • Ice Cannon - The Shellsnapper uses a large cannon to fire deadly ice projectiles at Aloy.

  • Ice Plumes - The Shellsnapper sends a channel of ice plumes towards Aloy, inflicting major damage if she's hit by one.

  • Belly Flop - The Shellsnapper jumps onto its belly, hitting anything in the near vicinity with melee damage.

  • Tail Strike - The Shellsnapper spins, using its tail to slash at foes.

  • Burrowing - The Shellsnapper burrows underground, reappearing at a new location and attacking enemies.

  • Shield Absorption - The Shellsnapper absorbs damage to its shell and uses the energy to power its more deadly moves.

Although you can try to play a faster style here, strafing around the Shellsnapper and dodging its attacks, its shell (and turrets) will follow you as you move, meaning you won't get much downtime to heal, craft or strategise. It makes it a hard fight to dominate aggressively, especially as he hits hard.

Whichever method you choose, we're aiming for the shell bolts, frost blasters, and chillwater sac primarily here. The shell bots can be found on the Shellsnapper's shell and will remove the shell if you can get rid of all of them, giving you the opportunity to access the machine's most important components. Meanwhile, the frost blasters are found on the front of the Shellsnapper's shell and its tail. Taking them out will stop it from hitting you with brutal ranged attacks (and net you a useable heavy weapon).

Finally, the chillwater sac is located on the Shellsnapper's underbelly, so wait for the massive tortoise to stand on its hind legs and then unload. It's best to use a powerful weapon for this component, as the Shellsnapper won't let you just tee off on that spot, so a sharpshot bow or boltblaster should do the trick.

If you manage to dislodge the shell bolts, you should also get access to some weak components that will seriously hurt the Shellsnapper, so take advantage. You should be able to hit the refining core and several sparkers (which will detonate and cause huge damage if hit with an electric projectile). The kinetic dynamo is found in there too, which deals huge damage if hit.

Protect yourself, stay healed up and pick your shots wisely. Stick to the plan and the Shellsnapper will be out for the count in no time at all.

Taking on the Shellsnapper feels like you’ve accidentally challenged a tank to a tug-of-war—except the tank has a shell, a cannon, and sever anger issues. It’s like fighting a giant, grumpy, swamp-dwelling robot who’s convinced it’s auditioning for a role in a new lead play! Just remember, patience is key, because once you figure out how to crack that shell, you’ll be left with a story about the day you outwitted a mechanical turtle with more firepower than a fireworks factory!

The Stormbird: Sovereign of the Tempestuous Skies, Herald of Thunder
An intimidating flying combat machine, the Stormbird can be found in several locations throughout the Forbidden West. Equipped with an electric cannon and sharp talons, this mechanical bird can be a thorn in Aloy's side if not taken out quickly, pressuring her to knock it out of the air and finish it off fast.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Shellsnappers:

The first Stormbird that Aloy encounters cannot be snuck up on, so this will not include any stealth tactics. Instead, I will cover skills that will be useful, as well as weapons, and tactics. As the Stormbird is quite difficult, Aloy may have to try these tactics a few times before getting it quite right.

Stormbirds employ powerful electric attacks from the air, such as carpet bombing with electrical energy projectiles, and equally powerful melee attacks on the ground using their beaks, talons, and tails. Additionally, they employ their wings as weapons by using them to generate damaging wind gusts, and to execute air-to-ground melee attacks. They can also use their weight to crush an enemy that moves directly beneath them while airborne. They possess no elemental weaknesses, and are resistant to Shock damage.

  • Storm Cannon Blaster - Charges up Storm Cannon and fires a single Shock orb that creates a large Shock explosion and residual Shock damage areas on impact. Attack disabled when Drenched or Slowed.

  • Storm Cannon Shots - Uses Storm Cannon to fire a series of 3 Shock orbs in quick succession that creates a small Shock explosion on impact. Attack disabled when Drenched or enough adhesive ammo is used.

  • Carpet Bomb - Flies in straight trajectory while dropping 8 Shock bombs in quick succession. Each bomb creates a large Shock explosion and residual Shock damage areas on impact.

  • Wing Flap - Spreads wings and flaps to generate a large wind blast, knocking Aloy back. Attack disabled while flying when Slowed.

  • Thunder Walk - Generates bubble of electrical energy around it and walks towards target.

  • Quick Land - Smashes ground with both feet and creates a spherical Shock blast on impact

  • Thunder Dive - Soars to a high altitude, then dive bombs target and smashes into the ground, creating a large Shock explosion on impact. Shock damage from the attack disabled when Drenched.

Stormbird is a strong machine that can’t be defeated easily. But you’ll be able to defeat them if attacked on weak points. Their weak point is in their chest and wings. Moreover, they will be neutralized through acid or plasma arrows.

So, use an explosive spear on its chest core to knock it down and make it fall to your control. When it falls, placing acid or explosive elemental traps within the area will cause it to receive massive damage and thus prevent it from withdrawing again. After that, all that continues to be is to loot its metallic body to gather a decent amount of very useful legendary pieces.

You can also use the rope launcher to lock it to the bottom. When it falls, placing acid or explosive elemental traps within the area will cause it to receive massive damage and thus prevent it from flying again. After that, all that is still is to loot its metallic body to gather a decent amount of very useful legendary pieces.

Facing The Stormbird is like entering an intense aerial dance-off, where the stakes are your very survival. Imagine dodging its electric cannon shots with the grace of a seasoned dancer while strategically aiming your own attacks to clip its wings. It's a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, except the cat is a giant, electrified bird, and the mouse is you with a bow and a lot of determination. Once you finally bring this tempestuous terror crashing down, you might feel a mix of triumph and exhaustion, like you've just won a sky-high tango competition. And hey, if you ever get invited to a dance battle, you can confidently say you've already taken on the fiercest partner out there!

The Frostclaw: Primal Ape of the Glacial Permafrost
A large bear-like acquisition machine found in the mountains northwest of Memorial Grove, the Frostclaw is an aggressive opponent that will hit Aloy with a mixture of ice and melee attacks. It's very similar to the Fireclaw, with the two sharing almost identical attacks and components despite dealing out opposite elemental damage types.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Frostclaws:

When going one on one with a Frostclaw, your best chance for success is to stay close, learn to avoid its melee strikes and hit the various weak points dotted around its body. Although getting up close and personal can seem counterproductive considering the Frostclaw's size and strength, it's actually much easier than dealing with the more unpredictable ice boulders and ice plumes it has in its ranged arsenal.

  • Ice Boulder - The Frostclaw launches ice boulders from far away, inflicting significant damage

  • Ice Plume - The Frostclaw summons a large plume of ice beneath Aloy's feet, inflicting massive damage if it connects.

  • Ice Claw Attack - In close range, the Frostclaw stands on its hind legs and slashes forward with a flurry of ice-infused melee attacks.

  • Jump Attack - The Frostclaw jumps into the air and lands on its backs, causing AOE damage to anything around it.

When you're ready to fight, the components we're looking to focus on are the chillwater sacs on its shoulders and the chillwater unit on its chest. These are both fairly easy to hit as they're large targets, meaning you can focus on dodging the Frostclaw and getting shots in when you find ample space and opportunity.

If you want the fight to be over quickly (or have exhausted both weak points), the sparkers are your next target. Found on the Frostclaw's back, these will detonate when hit with an electric arrow, meaning you can momentarily stun the Frostclaw and attack it with follow-up strikes.

If you can find a moment to circle the beast, you can also take aim at the four resource containers positioned on the lower half of its back. These will deal a decent amount of damage and net you some useful resources at the same time. Keep dodging and hitting it with big shots and the Frostclaw should go down in no time.

When you finally take down The Frostclaw, you'll feel like you've just wrestled a frosty grizzly bear and lived to tell the tale. Imagine yourself sliding through the snow, dodging icy swipes, and launching fire arrows like a pyrotechnic master. Each hit is a small victory, and each dodge is a dance move in the most epic winter ballet. By the end, you’re not just a hunter; you’re the ultimate snow conqueror, leaving behind a story of bravery and, of course, a very chilly pile of scrap metal

The Scorcher: Emperor of Fiery Conflagration
As its name suggests, the Scorcher is a fire-wielding combat machine that resides in the mountains northwest of Memorial Grove. It has a range of brutal attacks and the agility to execute them quickly, making it one of the most dangerous machines roaming the Forbidden West.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Scorchers:

Unlike some of Aloy's other intimidating foes, the Scorcher doesn't have a hugely diverse move set, as can be seen above. However, the moves it does use can be quick, brutal and unpredictable, making the Scorcher an enemy that you'll need to fight cautiously.

  • Fire Dash - The Scorcher propels itself forward with flames and strikes its target, inflicting melee and flame elemental damage.

  • Mine Cannon - The Scorcher uses its back cannon to launch a wave of explosive mines.

  • Fire Channel - The Scorcher launches a channel of fire towards its opponent.

  • Fire Strikes - The Scorcher stands on its hind legs and launches quick claw strikes infused with flame elemental damage.

For one, it's worth noting that it will close the distance frequently, using its brutal fire dash attack to get up in your face at every opportunity possible. Not only does the move hit like a truck, but it also forces you to constantly move out of range so it can't bully you with melee strikes. In short, you'll want to make sure you're on the move frequently, using the battlefield to keep your distance.

The components you're looking to take down in this fight are the mine launcher, the power generator and the scanning ears. All three should be relatively easy to hit, with the mine launcher located on its back, the power generator on its rear and the scanning ears on either side of its head. If it's moving too fast to hit any of these, wait until it launches mines at you and strike, as it'll stand still while it executes the attack.

Taking down the mine launcher will nix the mine attack (meaning you might want to leave it for last), while the power generator will cause a powerful explosion and the scanning ears will prevent it from tracking you when you go into stealth. If it's still up after all three components are destroyed, use purgewater arrows and aim for the two canisters on its back. They should detonate, inflicting a lot of damage. Stay out of its range and dodge its melee abilities, and you should come out of the fight on top.

Facing The Scorcher is like trying to outwit a flaming, mechanical wolf with a penchant for pyrotechnics. Imagine you're starring in your own high-stakes fire dance, where each step must be perfectly timed to avoid becoming a crispy critter. You'll be dodging and weaving like a seasoned dancer, sending arrows into its vulnerable spots with the precision of a master archer. When you finally topple this fiery beast, you might just find yourself craving some well-earned barbecue – though preferably not cooked by The Scorcher itself.

The Thunderjaw: Apex Colossus of Devastating Dominion
A towering mechanical monster, the Thunderjaw is easily one of Horizon Forbidden West's most imposing combat machines, bringing firepower, size and brute strength to any fight it's in. Although Aloy can encounter Thunderjaws in the wild, she'll be forced to take one down during the Faro's Tomb mission.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Thunderjaws:

Although the Thunderjaw is an intimidating threat, there are a handful of useful tips you can rely on to help bring it down. First off, it's worth identifying which components are the best targets to direct your aim at. Your best bets are its heart, its rapid-fire cannons, its tail, and its disc launchers.

  • Rapid-Fire Cannons - Uses the two cannons attached to its jaw to fire at Aloy, launching a series of fast-paced plasma projectiles, that deal devastating damage if not evaded.

  • Laser Beam - Uses the canons on its jaw to fire three laser beams that move in a straight line, causing significant damage to whatever's in its path.

  • Disc Launcher - Fires explosive discs which hover in the air, find a target and shoot towards them, inflicting significant damage on impact.

  • Monarch's Charge - Charges towards Aloy quick, bulldozing through whatever's in its way to trample her. Be especially wary as this attack will easily one shot a max level player if they are anywhere under half health.

  • Tailwhip - Uses its tail to hit Aloy with significant power, knocking her down and inflicting heavy damage.

  • Call for Reinforcements - Uses its antenna to call for back-up, enlisting the help of nearby machines.

For defeating this monstrosity of eternal agression, start with the disc launchers as these will be essential to winning the fight quickly. They're located on the Thunderjaw's shoulders. Use a powerful hunter bow, sharpshot bow or any weapon with decent tear damage, and launch everything you've got at these huge turrets. They shouldn't take too long to pry off, and once they're gone, they become useable heavy weapons that will make short work of the beast's components

You can also very easily use these steps but instead tie the thunderjaw down, as its a lot easier when he isnt trying to achieve a word record for the fastest pancake made and eaten, which he excels at to say the basics lol!

As for the heart, this component is invincible, although hitting it will deal a ton of damage to the Thunderjaw. To expose it, you have to remove the metal plating on its side. If you're not sure you're hitting the right spot, the heart glows orange, making locating it much easier. If you're finding it hard to hit the heart, you can also focus some electrical fire on the three sparkers on its tail. These will explode, doing a ton of damage to the imposing machine.

It's worth noting that the Thunderjaw won't make your job easy here, charging at you frequently. If it hits you, it can easily knock down half your health bar, so you'll want to make sure you're using well-timed rolls to evade its attacks and putting unbreakable objects between yourself and the beast. Acid arrows can also be a huge help, as they can melt away the Thunderjaw's armour and do lingering damage.

Facing a Thunderjaw is like trying to outsmart a giant, irate lizard with a flamethrower and a personal vendetta against your survival. Imagine it’s your first day on a chaotic obstacle course where the obstacles are all out to get you, and the grand prize is not being crushed by a gigantic robotic T-Rex. With every step, it’s like the Thunderjaw is throwing a tantrum, and you’re stuck trying to dodge its rage while making it look like you’re just casually strolling through a mechanical apocalypse. And once he falls, you'll be screaming to your friends, their awe-struck faces showing everything you need to know. I've had my share of that once in a while!

The Slitherfang: Monarch of Serpentine Vortex
Aloy's first true test of skill, the Slitherfang emerges for the first time during the conclusion of the Reach for the Stars mission, with Aloy's attempt to access the Data Center seeing her come face to face with one of these serpentine combat machines. Its intimidating appearance isn't just for show though; the Slitherfang can hit Aloy with a barrage of big attacks, including an acid spray, a sound blast and a tail whip.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Slitherfangs:

The first thing to note about the Slitherfang is that, initially, it has a lot of attacks at its disposal, being easily the most agile, swift and unsuspecting predator out there in the west. Your core goal with the Slitherfang (as in most fights in Forbidden West) is to render it powerless by disabling the most intimidating additions to its arsenal.

  • Burrowing Attack: When burrowing into the ground, continually move around the Arena without slowing down, as the Slitherfang will shoot out of the ground in your last location.

  • Sonic Blast: When rearing up into the air, move as quickly as possible to avoid the incoming Sonic Blasts. You’ll be temporarily stunned should you get hit by one of the blasts.

  • Purgewater Attack: When rearing up in the air, look for clouds of white steam that appear by the Slitherfangs mouth. When this occurs, it’ll mean that a Purgewater attack is incoming. The Slitherfang will shoot a blast of Purgewater across the area during this attack. If you time your dodge carefully, you’ll be able to avoid taking any damage at all.

  • Acid Attack: Before an Acid attack is set to occur, the Slitherfang will develop a green cloud by its mouth. When it’s ready to attack, it’ll charge forward and sweep across the area in front of it, leaving behind clouds of Acid.

  • Tail Shock Attack: When coiling up and shaking its tail in the air, it’ll launch its tail towards your location, slamming it into the ground, where it’ll create an electrical shockwave. You’ll need to quickly move out of the way and dodge this attack to avoid becoming stunned.

  • Charge Attack: Coiling up, the Slitherfang's eyes will begin to glow red, followed by a charging noise, before it proceeds to launch itself towards your direction, dealing large amounts of damage if you get caught. Note, this attack can destroy any obstacles blocking its path, so hiding isn't always an effective method.

  • Body Sweep: Rearing up into the air and leaning forward, the Slitherfang’s head will move forward quickly, smashing into the ground, performing a quick body sweep that's hard to dodge, so remember to be on your toes.

A good idea early in the fight is to get rid of the Slitherfang's ranged weapons: its acid spray, sonic blast and purgewater spray. That means you'll want to focus on the metalbite sac, the purgewater sac and the sonic hood. You can see all of these components and where they're located via the slideshow above.

Aim for the metalbite sac first. It'll be a black panel located just underneath the set of earthgrinder gears beneath the serpent's mouth. Destroying it will prevent the Slitherfang from shooting acid.

Next up, the sonic hood. To destroy it, you'll want to shoot at the metal plates that extend from the serpent's hood. These will prevent it from using its sonic blast attack.

Finally, if you look at the Slitherfang's back, you should see another black panel similar in shape and size to the metalbite sac you destroyed before. This is the purgewater sac. Destroy it and the Slitherfang can't fire purgewater.

With all three ranged abilities disabled, the Slitherfang will rely on melee attacks. It has four to worry about: a charge attack, a burrowing attack, a tail attack and a body sweep attack. When it does the charge attack, it'll violently dart towards you, inflicting a lot of damage. The tail attack sees it smash its tail on the ground, causing electrical damage. As for the burrowing attack, it'll dig into the floor and then leap at you from afar. Finally, the body sweep attack will see it hurl itself as you, smashing into the ground. Make sure to note the animations for all these moves so you can dodge appropriately.

With it mostly fighting at close range now, you'll want to focus fire on the glowblast canisters (which are located either side of the earthgrinder gears and can be detonated with plasma arrows), the sparkers (which are located at the bottom of the Slitherfang's torso and can be detonated with shock arrows) and the purgewater canisters (which are located on the tail and can be detonated with purgewater arrows). When hit with the right projectiles, these will explode, inflicting massive damage to the Slitherfang.

Facing a Slitherfang is like trying to outwit a mechanical serpent that looks like it was designed by someone who had nightmares about snakes and futuristic tech. Picture it: you’re facing off against a robotic snake that moves with the grace of a ballet dancer and the speed of a caffeinated squirrel. Every time it lunges at you, it feels like it’s trying to prove it’s the most agile, slithering machine in existence. It’s the epitome of what a child imagines when they picture a snake: all the coils, hisses, and flickering tongue, but with added laser beams and acid sprays. Dodging its attacks might make you feel like you’re in a high-stakes game of dodgeball, but remember, the key to victory is staying nimble and keeping your cool—because if you slip up, you’ll be finding out firsthand why mechanical snakes don’t need a “hiss” to intimidate.

The Tremortusk: Titan of Seismic Devastation and Earth-Splitting Cataclysms
A giant mammoth-like combat machine, the Tremortusk's imposing size and strength makes it one of Aloy's most significant threats. You'll first encounter this mechanical elephant during the Broken Sky quest, teaming with a certain person who I will not mention to take down a rebel-controlled variation of the machine. From then on, they'll appear throughout Forbidden West's world.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Tremortusks:

As with most machines, the key to finishing off a Tremortusk is to focus fire on the correct components, weakening it while also disabling some of its best attacks. Namely, we'll want to look for several areas that can stun the Tremortusk, as its range of moves can be overwhelming during the early stages of the battle.

  • Electric Stomp - The Tremortusk rears onto its hindlegs and then smashes the ground, sending out a shock wave that stuns Aloy if it connects.

  • Charge - The Tremortusk charges forward at Aloy, inflicting huge damage if it connects (but opening itself up to a counter-attack if it misses...)

  • Amplifying Mist - The Tremortusk emits a crimson mist, amplifying the power of both allies and its own attacks.

  • Tusk Strike - The Tremortusk sweeps its tusks towards its opponent, dealing huge damage if it lands.

  • Quad Rocket Fire - The Tremortusk fire a barrage of rockets from the turrets on its shoulders. These will lock onto Aloy, forcing her to time her dodge perfectly.

  • Plasma Blast - The Tremortusk sends out a deadly plasma projectile from turrets above its tusks.

  • Electric Blast - The Tremortusk sends out a deadly electric projectile from the turrets on its back.

  • Fire Boulder - The Tremortusk hurls a burning boulder at its opponent.

To start with, it's best to look at taking down the blaze sac on its underbelly, the shock cannons on its back, the salvo cannons on its shoulders and the plasma cannon above its tusks. Destroying the blaze sac will prevent it from using fire attacks (and also set off a huge explosion, dealing major stun damage and taking the beast down for a few seconds).

Meanwhile, taking out the shock, salvo and plasma cannons will prevent it from hitting you with electric, plasma and rocket projectiles. Better yet, you'll be able to pick up the plasma and shock cannons and use them against the beast.

Having knocked out the majority of its projectiles, it's now time to deal some major damage. Destroying those components (or at least two or three of them) should've left the Tremortusk on its last legs. An easy way to finish it is to take an electric arrow and hit one of the sparkers on its front legs. This will detonate the component, inflicting huge damage to the Tremortusk and potentially taking it down.

The best tactics for evading the Tremortusk's attacks is to use cover to shield yourself from projectiles and use its plodding speed to your advantage. The robotic elephant will also stand on its hind legs often, so use that time to hit hard to reach parts lying beneath the machine.

When you see the Tremortusk emitting red gas, don't worry too much. This won't affect Aloy but it'll make its attacks stronger. Once it's started emitting the gas, there isn't much you can do to stop it and the effect will last for a while, so just continue with what you're doing and key an eye on your health bar. If it drains below half, top it off with berries to make sure the Tremortusk doesn't one-shot you. With some fine shooting and agile dodging, you should be able to fell this magnificent mechanical beast.

Facing a Tremortusk is like trying to outmaneuver a colossus that’s decided to throw a tantrum on a seismic scale. As this mechanical behemoth lumbers toward you, every step sends shockwaves through the ground, turning your battle zone into a personal earthquake simulation. You’re effectively dancing on a quaking stage while the Tremortusk throws its weight around, making you rethink every step you take. The sheer force of its movements feels like nature itself is conspiring against you. And when you finally topple this mammoth marvel, the ground may still be shaking, but the pride in your victory will be rock-solid! Get it? Because ya know... rock? Like an earthqu... ok ok I'll stop! XD

The Fireclaw: Infernal Ape of the Scorched Inferno
A bear-like acquisition machine, the Fireclaw is quite likely in the top 5 most powerful mechanical machines, in this case being a beast that uses its range of brutal fire attacks to get the upper hand on its enemies. It's a more powerful variation of the Frostclaw, boasting a higher level and stronger attacks.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Fireclaws:

When going one on one with a Fireclaw, your best chance for success is to stay close, learn to avoid its melee strikes and hit the various weak points dotted around its body. Although getting up close and personal can seem counterproductive considering the Fireclaw's size and strength, it's actually much easier than dealing with the more unpredictable fire boulders and fire plumes it has in its ranged arsenal.

  • Fire Boulder - The Fireclaw launches fire boulders from far away, inflicting significant damage

  • Fire Plume - The Fireclaw summons a large plume of fire beneath Aloy's feet, inflicting massive damage if it connects.

  • Fire Claw Attack - In close range, the Fireclaw stands on its hind legs and slashes forward with a flurry of fire-infused melee attacks.

  • Jump Attack - The Fireclaw jumps into the air and lands on its backs, causing AOE damage to anything around it.

When you're ready to fight, the components we're looking to focus on are the blaze sacs on its shoulders and the blaze unit on its chest. These are both fairly easy to hit as they're large targets, meaning you can focus on dodging the Fireclaw and getting shots in when you find ample space and opportunity. Be warned that it hits hard and fast though, so don't get greedy and take risky shots unless you need to.

If you want the fight to be over quickly (or have exhausted both weak points), the sparkers are your next target. Found on the Fireclaw's lower back, these will detonate when hit with an electric arrow, meaning you can momentarily stun the Fireclaw and attack it with follow-up strikes. These can give you a nice reprieve during the battle, so it's wise to use them when you need a moment to heal, restock ammo or want to focus on taking out a specific component you're struggling to hit.

Alongside the Sparkers, you'll also find two Purgewater Canisters on the upper half of its back. Hit these with purgewater arrows to detonate them and cause huge damage. Keep dodging and hitting it with big shots and the Fireclaw should go down.

Battling a Fireclaw is like attempting a cook-off with a flamethrower in the middle of a volcano. It’s as if someone threw a bear into an incinerator, and now it’s out for revenge with a side of charred enemies. You’ll find yourself dodging fiery projectiles while trying to cook up a plan that doesn't end with you as the main course. When the Fireclaw heats up, it’s less about strategy and more about avoiding becoming the ultimate barbecue—because nothing says "crispy" quite like a close encounter with a mechanical inferno.

The Specter: Quintessential Pinnacle of Futuristic Elegance
A highly-advanced combat machine that assists Aloy's main adversaries in their secret plans, Specters are never found in the open world but crop up in an array of main and side missions. Specters are covered in white-gold armor plating. They resemble the Chariot-line Corruptor, although far more advanced. Their 'eyes' are two rectangular blue lights. They are much more graceful and elegant in their movements, presumably due to their nanotech composition.

Tips and Tricks for defeating Specters:

Unlike any other machine, the Specter has the ability to regenerate armour, making it a tough opponent that you need precision and speed to defeat. As such, the strategy here is to break through its shielding and focus on nailing certain weak points before it has time to regenerate its shields.

  • Cannons - A pair of cannons emerge from the Specter's back, firing lightning-fast projectiles at Aloy.

  • Tail Whip - The Specter uses its tail to inflict severe melee damage, knocking Aloy down.

  • Fire Dive Bomb - The Specter leaps into the air and dives at Aloy, inflicting significant fire damage and leaving a trail of fire behind it.

  • Wall Mount - The Specter jumps to a nearby wall, using the elevated vantage point to fire at its opponent.

  • Regeneration - The Specter summons back all of its missing armour, shield several core weak points.

Make sure you're using cover whenever the Specter's pulse cannons emerge from its back, getting shots on them to deal incremental damage. If the Specter moves towards you, it's also worth making sure you're ready to dodge, as its melee abilities hit hard. It's best to generally stay out of range and hit it from afar, as the Specter won't take kindly to you getting up in its face.

The parts we're aiming for mostly are the shock unit, the resource repository, the vector thruster, the plasma unit and the control nexus. The shock unit can be found beneath the armour at the front of the Specter and the plasma unit can be found behind the armour at the back, with both detonating and inflicting a lot of damage if hit with an arrow of the same elemental type. These are a good way to chip off a lot of health early as they're some of the easier components to hit.

With those done, you can either play it safe or risky. If you want to slowly but surely finish off the Specter, aim for the resource repository beneath the armour on its sides or the vector thruster by its cannons, knocking off the armour and hitting them before it can regenerate. However, if you're looking to end the battle quickly, get behind the Specter and try to hit the control nexus right beneath its tail. It'll deal a ton of damage, ending a Specter fast.

To make the fight easier, it's wise to make sure you're taking out the cannons ASAP, as these will be the weapon it relies on most. You can also attempt to disrupt its regeneration powers by hitting the regeneration unit beneath its head, although it can be finicky to hit.

Facing off against a Specter is like being challenged to a high-stakes dance-off by a robot ballerina from the 31st century. It’s as if someone took the most graceful swan from a futuristic ballet and turned it into a deadly white marble spider with a penchant for elegance and destruction. Dodging its attacks feels like trying to outwit a laser-guided waltz routine which I would not be surprised at all if they had by then. Just remember, when you finally bring it down, you’ll be the one getting a standing ovation—albeit, a very relieved and sweat-drenched one.

The Slaughterspine: Eternal Sovereign of the Abyssal Plasma Dominion
The Slaughterspine is one of the most dangerous machines created, combining agility with a large arsenal of Plasma attacks, as well as incredibly heavy armor which makes damaging the machine difficult. Both varieties of Slaughterspine are resistant to most elemental damages, with Shock and Plasma resistances being shared among them. In my opinion, this is easily the most difficult and intimidating machine in the ENTIRETY of Horizon Forbidden West, so tread carefully. Things are about to get malicious!

Tips and Tricks for defeating Slaughterspines:

The Slaughterspine can bite the ground and try to charge into Aloy, slash her with its tail or stomp her if she gets too close. It can power up with the Plasma Energizers on its legs and release a massive plasma-infused shockwave, along with a high pitched screech that can deafen targets, giving the machine a window of opportunity to attack. Using its tail, it can fire 5 plasma beams at Aloy or infuse its normal attacks with Plasma. It can also blast a laser of plasma from its mouth, launch a plasma wave from its earthblaster, and shoot energized plasma missiles from its spinal launchers.

It's worth noting that Slaughterspines are largely a very different threat to anything else you'll meet in Horizon Forbidden West. For one, they have one of the highest levels of any enemy in the game (with the standard variant sitting on the same level as the final boss and the apex variant exceeding the max player level), but they also operate very differently to other foes.

  • Doom Bringer’s Rampage - The Slaughterspine charges at Aloy, inflicting a lot of damage if it successfully connects.

  • Titanic Tail Cataclysm - A massive sweep with the Slaughterspine's tail that can knock Aloy back and inflict a lot of damage.

  • Seismic Groundbreaker Slam - The Slaughterspine slams its foot on the floor, knocking Aloy back and delivering a lot of damage.

  • Infernal Plasma Barrage - When in plasma mode, the Slaughterspine fires three plasma beams that move in a straight line, inflicting damage and plasma build-up.

  • Crescendo of Plasma Propagation - The slaughterspine will open the plasma energizer nodes on its hips and above the earthblaster and start charging a powerful force. If not shot to decrease the Plasma bar, it will officially enter Plasma Mode, unleashing a new and deadly arsenal of attacks.

  • Cataclysmic Plasma Meteor - When in plasma mode, the Slaughterspine fires a large plasma orb projectile that inflicts a lot of damage and plasma build-up.

  • Devastating Plasma Eruption - When in Plasma mode, the Slaughterspine sticks its tail in the ground, causing giant plumes of Plasma to emerge from the ground where Aloy is standing.

  • Eviscerating Plasma Surge - When in plasma mode, the Slaughterspine sends homing plasma attacks across the ground towards Aloy, inflicting damage and plasma build-up.

  • Apocalyptic Plasma Cyclone - When in plasma mode, the Slaughterspine charges up a powerful beam, firing it out of its mouth and moving in a circle. If it lands, it has the power to deliver a one-hit kill.

Unlike most machines, the Slaughterspine operates in two different modes. Its standard state isn't too tough to deal with. It mostly leans on melee strikes and a few ranged plasma attacks, allowing Aloy to capitalise on its various weak spots as she dodges attacks.

However, this all changes when the glowing purple plasma energizers on its legs begin to charge up. If these reach maximum capacity, the Slaughterspine goes full-on super Saiyan, as plasma flows through its body and begins amping up all of its attacks. As such, you have a few objectives to follow if you want a manageable fight.

Number one is to target those nodes. When they start charging up, hit them with everything you've got. If you damage them enough, the charge up process will falter, although they can't be destroyed. If you're successful you should have less trouble, but if you don't, keep on your toes and try to dodge as much as possible. If you get hit, you can get trapped in a void of plasma build-up hell, so it's best to be more passive during the phase and wait for the Slaughterspine to power down.

When you aren't running for your life, the plan is to aim for the plasma earthblaster on its stomach, the plasma spine launchers on its back, the spinetail lancer on its tail and the chillwater canisters at its rear. The earthblaster prevents it from launching powerful homing plasma strikes (and exposes the plasma core), the spine launchers disable its homing orbs, the spinetail lancer prevents it from firing plumes and laser beams, and the chillwater canisters (if hit with ice arrows) will cause ice explosions.

These will render the Slaughterspine near powerless, but also inflict a ton of damage, allowing you to focus fire on the plasma core to bring it down for good. All of these pieces contain great loot too, so make sure to scour the battlefield for them after the fight's concluded. Make sure to use tripwires too, as the Slaughterspine will make no attempt to dodge them, allowing you to inflict elemental build-up quickly.

Facing off against the Slaughterspine is like being thrown into the ultimate mechanical gladiator arena where the stakes are your very survival. Imagine you're in a catastrophic chess match with a furious, electrified king that moves at the speed of a lightning storm and has a penchant for making your day extremely short. When it charges, it’s like a freight train with an attitude, and its tail whip? Think of a hurricane on a rampage. The stomp reverberates like an earthquake orchestrated by a particularly cranky deity. Plasma beams crisscross the battlefield like streaks of cosmic lightning, while plasma orbs could easily double as alien artillery. And let’s not forget the plasma plumes, erupting like volcanic fury from the ground. With its Earthblaster attack sending deadly plasma missiles straight at you, and the Godzilla beam threatening to end your run with a single, devastating blast, every encounter is a harrowing dance with doom. If you manage to survive this monstrous showdown, you'll have earned not just victory but legendary status among the bravest of Aloy’s foes. And as for the Apex Slaugherspine... we don't talk about that one... we don't talk bout' that, EVEN THE SUNWING'S RUNNING AWAY! XD

Inevitable Conclusion of splendour across the merciless Forbidden West The cusp of finality! ;D
Thank you for joining me on this electrifying journey through the formidable machines of Horizon Forbidden West. Crafting this guide has been a labour of love, and I hope you’ve found it as engaging and enlightening as the battles themselves. Each machine in this guide was chosen not just for their power, but for the unique challenges they present, pushing the limits of strategy and skill in the Forbidden West.

If you are wondering about the burning shores enemies such as the Bilegut or the Stingspawn I will quickly detail them here.

Stingspawn: The easiest way is to use a shredder with shock shredders, my personal favourite being the Ancestors Return achieved by getting all the ornaments. But if not the thunderbolt shredder gauntlet would do nice as well. Just hit the stingspawn anywhere on their minuscule body and it will ignite the shock canister on its back because of the shredders elemental AoE and as a bonus it will also destroy any other Stingspawn in a small proximity! Its like the fourth of july! Just slightly more microscopic!

Waterwing:
  • It's far easier to sneak up on a Waterwing than it is to defeat one in the skies. Once in the air, the Waterwing will alert its nearby allies, and you'll get swarmed.
  • The Specter Gauntlet is inarguably the best weapon to defeat Waterwings due to its designators. Place designators on your flying foe, and the shards you fire will home in on the target, allowing you to focus on avoiding incoming attacks.
  • Destroying a Waterwing's Chillwater Canister with Frost Damage or Blaze Canister with Fire Damage (Apex Waterwing) causes an elemental explosion that deals significant damage and causes the machine to exceed its elemental limit.

As for the rest, just think of it as a sunwing, but its been mechanically turned into a water balloon, and mind you, if you bring it to the balloon fight, lets just say the children wont be coming back with their puny water balloons anytime soon lol, humanity has a new kind of waterballoon, and ITS A WATERWING BABY!

Bilegut: Simply tie down the enemy with a ropecaster to stop its frantic movements. Then while beside the Bilegut, focus on targeting its Acid Sac and Adhesive Sac. The Acid Sac is located under the Bilegut's chin and on its stomach. Destroying it will trigger a massive explosion, causing severe damage and obliterating any Stingspawn in the blast radius, if they happen to be onto you. Apart from that you can also freeze it by hitting an amour plate like we talked about earlier in the guide, where the tie down state reduces less when hitting an armour plate and also greatly decreases physical impact damage, but not elemental buildup. So simply freeze it with a triple notch of ice arrows, easiest being the Seeker Hunter Bow in falls Edge, or my personal favourite, the Sun Scourge, by defeating all the Rebel Camps. Either way, once you freeze it, load up your favourite boltblaster, choose the Advanced Bolts, and used a sustained burst weapon technique straight to the face or the resource containers, and you have yourself a lovely frog barbecue. However don't eat it! I don't think metal would go down ya stomach that well lol!

If you enjoyed exploring these mechanical behemoths and found the insights helpful, I would greatly appreciate a thumbs up or a rating. Your support fuels the creation of these detailed guides and helps in bringing more such content to enthusiasts like you.

And if you’re feeling particularly generous, an award would truly make my day and serve as a wonderful acknowledgment of the effort and energy poured into this guide. Here's to many more epic battles and discoveries in the world of Horizon Forbidden West. Thank you for reading, and may your adventures be ever thrilling!

Definitely a way, especially if you are a fan of the melee combat style, I used it less frequently however as I prefered the whole scenario of far ranged attacks and spike throwers, however I was a fan of the resonator blast, especially on lower tiered enemies as it allowed me to take them out in a single strike with an arrow from my Graveslingers Lament, which as so far is my favourite form of dealing damage. Ropecaster them down with "the tie that binds" then use "the sun scourge" which can be obtained surprisingly early, to freeze the enemy, making sure to hit the armour plates so the ropes dont break early, if you didnt know, and then focus shot my sharpshot bow right into the weak point, insane damage ngl, and I play on the hardest difficulty and collected all achievements lol, that's how you know I've lost my mind lmao :thor_lul:

Not so far into the game, but the easiest way to kill burrowers, scroungers and the like are two consecutive heavy hits (sometimes 3, so they lie on the floor) and then a crit. :)
