Brawlers Guide to Boxing - A tutorial to fist fighting
By Sleepy Head
I really like the fist fighting in this game but wanted the full guide on hand without having to be on the first level again. Then I cut and cropped it all to be a bit easier to use, hopefully other people find this useful. Now with some arguably accurate conjecture at the end.

Boxing for Battle

- a boxer's guide to advanced brawling technique

Not all boxer's can sew, but they must be able to weave! Use DODGE while moving left, right, or back, to leave your opponent punching the air. Always remember to take deep breaths and mind your stamina! If you run out of energy, you can't attack until recovered.

THE COMMON STREET THUG
He is easily out-manouvered with a well-timed dodge

ATTACK delivers a basic jab. Jabs can sometimes be effective in quick succession, but this technique soon left Mr. Thane gasping for breath -- A measured pace is suggested to raise your chance of victory.

A BASIC JAB
Simple, but effective

(Page 2)

When your opponent isn't wearing gloves, it's more important than ever to protect your face. Hold BLOCK to shield yourself from incoming damage. While this won't entirely negate harm from all attacks, it's almost always better than taking a blow on the chin.

MIND YOUR MUG

A well-timed BLOCK, just as an opponent strikes, will parry their attack. A successful parry will briefly stun your foe, giving you an opportunity to dish out a heaping helping of violence.

An experienced boxer knows when their opponent is near defeat! Look for a flash, and deliver a finisher with USE.

TIMING IS KEY!

(Page 3)

If your foes won't fight fair, why should you? Press KICK to do what you can't in the ring. Kicking deals more knock-back than a jab, but at a higher stamina cost. KICK can also ensure a downed enemy stays down.

A swift kick can stop potential attackers in their tracks

GOON TASTES SHOE

Fancy footwork is good for more than just show! An ATTACK while moving left or right will throw a hook in the corresponding direction.

Holding ATTACK while moving forward will result in a devastating cross. Be careful with your timing! the wind-up is much longer than for a jab.

DIRECT YOUR BLOWS

(Page 4)

Hold ATTACK while stationary or moving backwards for a powerful uppercut. Introduce a goon's glass jaw to your steel fist and they'll be much worse for wear. Thane growled with effort and rage, as he drove his fist into the chin of his attacker.

TO THE MOON!
Knock your enemies flat

Enough Speed can turn the human body into a blunt projectile. SPRINT toward an enemy to knock them aside. When you're out-numbered, sometimes the best way is through!

IN HELL?
Make like a bat and get outta there

We at Gloves Off! extend our thanks to Mr.Thane for demonstrating these valuable techniques, and helping ensure that all Gloves Off! readers have a fighting chance every time there's a chance to fight

In Summary
  • DODGE when going left right or back
  • Mind your stamina!
  • Basic ATTACK is a jab
  • BLOCK to shield some damage
  • BLOCK before an enemy attack to parry
  • A parry stuns the enemy, a stunned enemy can be finished with USE
(Not here but a finished enemy restores some health)
  • You can KICK for a high cost, but high knock-back move.
  • You can KICK a downed enemy to kill them
  • ATTACK while moving left or right is a left or right hook
(This can fling enemies in the respective direction)
  • ATTACK while moving forward is a cross punch, has a longer wind-up
  • ATTACK while stationary or moving back is an uppercut
  • When you SPRINT you knock enemies aside and do a little damage
Bonus Info (WIP)
This is some extra stuff not specifically covered by the Boxer's Guide to Brawling you might find useful. I'm still testing some stuff out and a lot of the specific numbers probably could be more accurately found by digging through the files but this is just an incredibly rough calculation based on bar length when punched.

For this I used the three goons right outside the door on level 1. I measured the full health bar out to roughly 185 pixels and divide all our numbers by 5 to make them easier to look at. Let's call the health of these basic goons 37. The energy cost is based on a full bar being 100 energy total, but jab doesn't want to behave with neat numbers here

Jab
9 damage
5.8 energy
Basic attack, your bread and butter punch

Kick
2 damage
23 energy
Does very low damage but you can interrupt attacks enemies are about to do and push them pretty far away

Hook
4 damage
23 energy
Damage isn't great, but you can push people left or right and it's great at hitting everyone in front of you at once, as well as hit through a blocking enemy (Thanks Watereater)

Upper Cut
17 damage
23 energy
Highest damage punch in the game, but needs to start it's charge moving backwards or standing still, so it can be a bit difficult to land. Great on unsuspecting goons.

Cross
15 damage
23 energy
The lunging uppercut, it sacrifices a little damage for a lot of range

Blocking is the one thing I forget the most, but it will make you near unkillable if you're smart about it. If you look at the incredibly necessary red lines at the edges of your fists, this is pretty much your "shield" area where you want to keep your attackers in to count as blocking. For fist fighters it will completely negate their damage, but goons with weapons will still do some, albeit mostly reduced, damage.

Blocking with weapons can provide more protections at the cost of durability. Small weapons can't block incoming damage but everything else can, and for the trashcan lid and frying pan they can block bullets as well (Thanks CMD Arid). You can also switch guns to a melee mode in a pinch.

Lastly punching a goon in the groin will give you a small stun as they deal with the nut trauma. (Ty Spyro Jyro)

Sure thing, I'll play through the updated levels soon and update the guide once I've messed around with parrying more

do you think you could explain more about the parry? i can't get it right

Grunch it's actually in the manual on page 3, but I added a note about the thing Watereaters Pointed out in Bonus Info
Sleepy Head  [author] 30 Aug, 2024 @ 11:37am
Hey I'll add that in, slipped my mind to update it
Richard Watterson 30 Aug, 2024 @ 10:58am
you forgot to include the charged hook (holding punch while holding left or right does a stronger hook that costs more stamina) idk why the game doesnt include it in the manual
Watereaters 16 Jul, 2024 @ 9:35am
Hooks ignore front blocks btw.
Sleepy Head  [author] 12 Jul, 2024 @ 7:16am
Forgot to respond but thanks for the info, I'll add it in
CMD Arid 8 Jul, 2024 @ 4:26pm
As far as I'm aware, it's the Frying Pan and the Trash Can Lid that allow you to block bullets.

The knife, bottle, razor and any other 'tiny' melee weapon cannot block at all.

Everything else I didn't mention can block melee attacks, but not bullets.

Hey that's a good point, I forgot about that one
Spyro Jyro 4 Jul, 2024 @ 12:58pm
I'm not sure if its significant but I think you can stun goons by attacking the groin. Its short though.
