How to run ECWolf in 2024 (Source Mod)

Wolfenstein 3D is a classic game which deserves to be played with decent graphics and modern movement. In this guide I'll show you how to use the Source mod "ECWolf" in 2024. Simple and easy.

This is what you get with ECWolf

ECWolf is a source mod, which means it's based on the Source Engine. To start off with, here's some aspects of what this mod improves.

A smoother mouse and W A S D movement
16:9 aspect ratio
HD resolution
Better sound in general
Plus: The annoying sound when you bump into something is way more comfortable for your ears

This mod works also for the Spear of Destiny Add-On.

Very clever: You can always change options back to a more retro like feeling :o

1. Downloading the Mod

First:
Download ECWolf directly from the developer's website [maniacsvault.net] and choose the proper data for your system.

For me it's Windows 64 Bit . And because I'm still using Win10, all further steps will be completed on Win10 interface. But I suppose, for Win11 it's the same.

2. Browse Local Files

Second:
Browse your local files. To do so, open your Steam library, search for Wolfenstein 3D.
Then right click on it.

Select "Properties"
Click on "Installed Files"
Click on "Browse "

After that, you should've opened the game folder which contains two folders (base and DOSBox).
Open DOSBox.

3. Installing the Mod

There are only a few steps left to go.

Once DOSBox is open, rename the dosbox.exe to a name of your choice. For example "nodosbox" (yes, very creative lol). Otherwise, just delete it, if you don't want to keep it.

Now, unpack the mod you've downloaded before right into this DOSBox folder.

Rename ecwolf.exe to dosbox.exe

As you can see, after renaming ecwolf.exe to dosbox.exe the icon changed automatically to dosbox.

4. Play

Once everything is installed, you can run Wolfenstein 3D via your Steam library. Just click on Play.

Select what you want to run

Enjoy the gameplay

Note: I censored the crosses because I live in Germany :D The game and the mod is fully uncensored.

for everyone with the error message. what worked for me was not to rename the ecwolf.exe. i just started the ecwolf.exe and it worked for me.

this works fine. the guy below me, saying it's not working, is having a problem by itself. this guide is good. i think.. i've been using this source port for as long as i can remember

does not work any more will crash from changing res or to fullscreen

Go to your Wolfenstein 3D install folder.

Open the DOSBox folder.

Copy all files from the base folder (including ecwolf.exe).

Inside the DOSBox folder:

Rename dosbox.exe to dosbox_backup.exe.

Rename ecwolf.exe to dosbox.exe.

Launch Wolfenstein 3D from Steam—ECWolf should start instead of DOSBox.

When i open the game it says please use --console or start from command prompt to see error messages

An error has occurred (press enter to dismiss) wnd i click enter and the game just kicks me out what should i do

didn't work for me, I get a window that opens up the console with an error message
