The Saboteur Graphic Settings Fix
By A Harmless Cat and 1 collaborators
This is a short and straightforward guide aimed at people who are not able to open the VideoSettings configuration executable and thus can't change their graphical settings. It will go over how you can quickly change settings to play the game and how to fully get the settings editor GUI working.

Configuration File Explanation
Settings changed via the "VideoSettings.exe" file are actually saved on a config file in your documents folder.

The location of the config file is:

"Your user profile\Documents\My Games\The Saboteur\Savegames\config.ini"

(If you don't see the config.ini file, open The Saboteur and start a new game, skip or watch the opening cutscene and then immediately pause the game and save it from the menu. This will create the file for you in the folder.)

You can open this .ini with any standard text editor such as Notepad.

Once you are in the file you will see a few options, the ones you really care about are below.

ScreenWidth - this is set based on your monitor's resolution (If you play in 1440p you need to set this to 2560, for 1080p it would be 1920)

ScreenHeight - this is obviously the other part of your resolution, you need to once again set it based on your display (if you play in 1440p you need to set it to, imagine that, 1440. For 1080p that would be 1080

RefreshRate - that is the most important thing when it comes to running this game normally. Make sure you set this to 60Hz as the game is not stable on anything higher than 60. It's a game from 2009 after all!

PostProcessing - Some users are reporting that setting the Post processing in-game to 0 fixes crashes upon launching. I have not been able to replicate this as I have not ran into such crashes myself. In any case it's worth noting, you can enable or disable it in the config file by selecting a value of either 0 or 1.

The other settings such as TextureQuality, SliceQuality and etc. can be set to anything you prefer, the highest setting here would equal the number 3. So if you would like to have the best texture settings you can set your TextureQuality to 3 and etc.

Fixing the video settings GUI
If you try to run the "VideoSettings.exe" and are not able to, this is caused by a few missing dependencies. In order to run the GUI properly, you will need .NET Framework 3.5 (installed automatically by Steam), the 32-bit version of Microsoft's Visual C++ 2008 packages and a few legacy DirectX components.

You can get all the latest C++ redistributables from Microsoft's website directly here.[learn.microsoft.com]

For downloading the legacy components of DirectX, click here.[www.microsoft.com]

These dependencies are only needed for the Settings GUI to run, not the game itself. Steam will automatically install the 2005 C++ redistributables needed for the game.

I personally suggest you follow the steps in the previous section and manually edit your config file as that will save you a lot of hassle and precious time.

For your convenience, a picture of the GUI with optimal settings. These settings are identical with the values shown in the configuration file.

I would like to give a massive shoutout to λrthur Holmes who left a comment mentioning that DirectX legacy components are also needed for the settings editor. I tried this myself and the GUI opens normally now. Keep in mind that the previous section of the guide is still very much valid and I would still recommend editing your settings via the config file as it will save you time.
Hope this helps you out :D

Just wanted to mention, the new version of The Saboteur Fusion Fix, will uncap FPS. I specifically asked the author to do this, since I could emulate the console version of The Saboteur uncapped.

I've played a few hours, and the only bugs I've seen are the AA guns turning slowly, and sometimes cars don't move until you tap the brakes. General gameplay and combat seems unaffected.

I'll need to do more testing, but there might be an FPS higher than 60 that doesn't have these bugs.

At least now, we aren't capped to 59.94 FPS, and can do a proper 60 if you want, or higher. I've always felt the frame times were a bit off in this game.

@mrdylangray Your best bet would be to use external software like DxWnd to window the game.

@AugustKron Does the config file show 2560x1440 or 640x480? If it shows 640x480 you should change it manually in order to try to set it to 1440p. If it shows that it's set to 1440p in the config file then the game might not have the proper permissions to write files to the directory, you can try to reinstall it to a different directory.

My system ran the configuration utility just fine, and created the config.ini correctly, but the game launches in 640x480 anyway - and has the nerve to complain that it should be in 2560. What to do now?
