First Step
So the first step to fix this is to check the proton version you're running the game on.

To do that select the gear icon on the right corner of the Tomb Raider game page, then go to Properties, and Compatibility.

By default the game launches in the native Linux version, you might not encoutner any issue with this version, but if you do, here's the next step.

Now check the box that says: Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.

And select Proton version 7.0-6.

It should start installling it for you, if you don't have it already.
Last Step
Now for our last step, in the same screen you're right now, go to the Betas section.

On the Beta Participation box, select the version named: build743.0 - TR Build 1.01.743.0.

Now you can launch the game and enjoy it without any more weird crashes.
Final Notes
You should be good to go now, but if you have more issues getting the game to run, make sure to add a comment bellow and I'll try to help you with it.

A little late but this has been bugging me for days. could not get past the initial cut scene on a new game without it crashing.

Have tried everything i could find online, I had also tried a few combos of betas and proton versions, but this combination worked pefectly with no other changes and everything else set to default.

THANK YOU!

Well this game has a lot of problems both on Windows and Linux. As a last ditch effort I would verify the game files maybe even reinstall it or cap the fps to 30.
That is if you haven't done those already.
Really a bummer that you couldn't get it to work, might have been an issue caused by a recent steam deck update.

Yup, tried that too. I might be out of luck. Bummer.

Have you tried switching to other proton versions? Experimental or 8.0 might work better.

Tried that just now and no luck. I tried reducing the graphics and basically everything to the minimum. Still no luck. I think the game is just broken and needs a patch to work on the steam deck

Some users pointed out that capping the frame rate at 60 fps can solve the issue, it's worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet.

The game freezes every time I get to a cut scene on the Endurance where Lara is about to kill a large brute with her axe. Any tips? I’ve tried changing the graphics settings as some users online have mentioned but it just cycles the sound endlessly and is frozen mid swing
