No. 1 *+ Placing grass EVERYWHERE +*
At the start of the game people like to just place grass tufts all over the map without concern for their future selves.
Do not do this as most animals need a specific biome to evolve and stay happy. You can now fix this with the "Remove many" tool but this was not an option until a few updates ago.

No. 2 *+ Using to much DP before getting sheep +*
New players tend to spend loads of DP on grass and trees before getting sheep. This can hinder you and even softlock you at the very start; sheep need to eat and be happy but they also cost DP to buy. Sheep, like all animals, produce DP when they're happy.
A: One sheep can produce some of the DP for a second sheep, but you will want to start with around three; a single mature sheep will create baby sheep (with mitosis somehow). A single sheep is likely to die of old age both before creating a baby sheep and before you can buy a second sheep.

No. 3 *+ Putting your biomes next to each other +*
This will cause the biomes to leak into each other over time which will make a mess similar to the issue mentioned in mistake No. 1. Some plants and animals will also need a single biome to stay happy and make DP.

No. 4 *+ Not putting borders of rocks between biomes +*
Putting these borders will benefit you in three ways:
1) Biomes leak slower
2) The boulders will help rock-loving species to flourish (be sure a biome is big enough for rock-hating species to flourish inside it if there are any)
They also look nice and don't require maintenance!

No. 5 *+ Not planning your biomes +*
Planning the biomes makes the game repetitive and boring but also makes it much less of a headache!
Remember some biomes will have sub-biomes depending on the requirements of their specicies. For example:
Forest --> Acer tree grove
Grassland --> Wheat plains
Grassland --> Red maple highlands
