Things you may not know you can do in Shadows of Doubt
By ActuallyEthan
[Updated 3/16/2024] This is a little compilation of little tips and tricks that you can do to help you solve cases. This mostly focuses on things that the game doesn't tell you that you can do, or somethings that it may mention but doesn't bring attention to. I will not be adding things such as bugs, exploits that break the game, or simple game play questions that the game tells you, there are other guides for those kinds of things.

When Updated, new tips will be added to the stop of the stack to save time for recurring visitors

No more to come.
This is all I have for now. I will update this as I find some more tips and tricks. Let me know if you know of any, and I'll add it to the board. And if you could please like this guide so that other people can see it, it would mean a lot!

The 1.0 release of this game not only felt like a disappointment, it felt like a betrayal to the entire community. I will not be updating this guide any longer but will be leaving this up because despite what the devs have done, I still love this community.

[Edit] For anyone reading that might be confused at 1.0, the devs released a very rushed 1.0 that did not deliver on several promised features, was broken on launch, and then stated they would not be adding anything more to the game. They did not add the promised steam workshop which would actually allow the community to continue adding content without using third party launchers, and over all have just not been communicating with their community. They want to move on with other things and instead of letting the community know well in advance of their plans to do so, they went along pretending that things were fine until the day of.

For more context, I highly recommend watching this 1.0 Release video by ThatBoyWags who was a long time Shadows of Doubt content creator, and whose content was even used in official promotional material. He expresses his disappointment quite well.
How to Use the Search Bar
The Search Bar when looking people up in the various in game computer systems doesnt always work the way you want it to.

First, you should know that the search bar in game requires you to type at least 2 letters letters into it before it shows you any results. So if you try typing in a single letter, it will not show any results.

Second, the search bar is not alphabetical. It returns the names in a seemingly random order and will return every name that has the combination of the letters you search for.

For example, if I type in Ed, it will not only return me will people named Ed, but names like Jared, Ahmed, Frederick, Kennedy, etc. All these named have "ed" in them somewhere.

The last thing is that the search will sometimes return more names then there are people that can fit on the screen. Always make sure to scroll down to see other pages of search results. Becareful to scroll back up though, if you search a new term while on a different page of results, you might see no results come up. This is because the game still thinks you are on the second or third page, and there aren't enough results to spill onto those pages. If you see a blank page, make sure to scroll up to check that you are at the top of the results list.

I think that is everything you need to know about the search bar in game. Let me know if there is anything else.
Knock out your suspect through the Door
If you need to knock out a suspect really quickly, you can sometimes knock people out using a door.

Knock on the door to draw the NPC towards it and listen for them to be standing on the other side.

Then you sprint towards the door and kick down the door to open it.

If the NPC is standing in the right spot, this will knock them back flying and usually knock them out in the process.

Thank you to a few different people for reminding me to add this here!
Use surveillance footage to your advantage.
This was given to me by RawHerring. I have not personally verified this.

If you have a surveillance photo of the likely criminal, you can print it out from the computer. From there under the photos connections tab you can pin the Unknown Citizen in the frame and ask if neighbors have seen them.
The Government Database is overpowered
I am reminded that new people aren't aware of this so I thought I would mention it here.

In City Hall, computers there will have access to the Government Database

This database has the profile of every single NPC in the game. If you have the name of a person you can immediatly get all of there information

Sometimes you only have the first and last initial to go off of. As stated in another tip, the database and all other search functions in game require you to type at least 2 letters letters into it before it shows you names. You can brute force the system by typing in every combination of 2 letters you need.

For Example, lets say all you have was that the initials of the Killer were W. E.

You could start searching with "WA" and then go through and find every citizen with the W first name and a last name starting with E.

Then you would repeat with "WB". You probably wont get any names from this but I do it to be consistent.

You would continue all the way to "WZ" and you should have gotten the name of every single citizen with the Initials W. E.

Keep in mind the database is not sorted alphabetically and you have to scroll to see all results. If you are scrolled down, and you search something, it might not show anything because it thinks you are on the second or third page of results and maybe the current page doesn't have that many. So you have to remember to always scroll up.
Only have a phone number for a lead? Call them.
If you go to a residential building, like your apartment, you can call the phone number and then find the room (usually in the basement) where call logs are kept. From there you can find what building the call went to. Go to that building and do the same thing to find a room number. You should be able to take it from there.
Rename items in your case file.
I didn't realize that you could do this for a while, but if you open an item in the case file and double-click the name, you can rename the item. This is especially useful for things like codes or writing descriptions of notes.
Customize your threads.
If your case file is too cluttered, you can right click on a thread to hide it, or change the color of it. I find it useful to be consistent and use different colors for different types of information. Red for general connection, blue for player-made connections, green for things related to work, etc.
Newspapers are super helpful when you are completely lost.
So in the game you can find/buy news papers. These newspapers automatically update everyday. When there is a murder, either the day of or the next day depending on when the murder happened, there will be information in the newspaper about it. This can include information like who discovered the body and things that you maybe didn't see on the crime scene. Also if the killer wrote something on the wall and you can't make it out the newspaper will usually say what it actually says in plain text. I just had a case last night where someone was murdered in the street and had absolutely no info to go on. The next day I read the paper and was able to find out who discovered the body and talk to them. They gave me a description of the killer leaving the scene and what direction they went. From there I was able to track them down and solve the case.
Take pictures with your camera.
If the murderer has written something on the wall, you can take a picture with a camera and when you pin it, the game will automatically make threads to the location of the murder. This can be helpful when you can't quite make out what was written on the wall. You can get a camera as a the weapons lockers in City Hall.
Scan hands and feet.
You can scan people's hands to get their prints while they are incapacitated. Though usually I find it easier to just get their name and grab their citizen profile from City Hall.

You can also use the finger print scanner to scan foot steps to get the shoe size.
Thanks to u/xRaynex for bringing this to my attention. I had known this was a thing but didn't think of adding it.
Use the elevator for protection.
If you are being pursued inside a building, you can usually get into the elevator and close to door in order to stop your pursuer. Then you can take the elevator and hand out somewhere else until things die down. If you are on a floor where the elevator is below you, you can call the elevator and run down stairs until it gets close. Then you can open the door and jump down onto it. There is a hole in the ceiling to let you do that. (I am not liable for any legs broken during the process. But broken legs are better than dead)
Check out black market shops.
This was given to me by RawHerring. I have not personally verified this.

There are black market shops in basements of some buildings that can be entered with a password found in grafiti around the city (or just broken into) which contain a registry of sales of the weapons sold to likely murderers.
Check Under Every Doormat
This is technically covered in the tutorial but I forget about it myself all the time.

Make sure the first thing you do when you get to a door you need to get into, is check the door-mat for keys.

@Dual Helix Hm. that is good to hear. If they do truly continue adding to the game than I am more than happy to take down my message and consider picking the game up again. What happened has kept me from playing it just because of the harsh feelings I had associated with the game. I hope that things do truly change, they deliver the things they promised on, and I can be happy supporting the game again.

@ActuallyEthan I agree that the game came out in a rushed state but the blog post on launch day said that they will be adding additions to the game as patches come out. As of their Dec 10 blog post they clarified further that they have been having issues with adding large features and want to focus on polishing what is currently in game before trying to do so. It is disappointing but the devs aren't just leaving it in it's current state.

Dang, that's so disappointing! This game had so much potential

Thank you for clearing that up!

I agree with your disappointment sentiment. What the hell? So much potential still. It was SO promising. But they just won't work on it anymore...

What happened at Ver1.0?
Michael 2 Nov, 2024 @ 2:56pm
@jahnahlove not sure. I bought it at early access and played it on and off the entire time, but am really digging into it now that it's 1.0 and I'm having a blast. I keep hearing the devs are done adding things to the game, so maybe that's where the ire is coming from?
Jahnahlove 31 Oct, 2024 @ 6:52am
Genuinely curious as I am new to the game, why did the 1.0 update make the game unplayable?
Crunchy Milk 4 Oct, 2024 @ 1:19pm
@StandingMan The killer will always strike again at some point if they haven't been arrested, you'll unfortunately just have to be patient.
