The snowy and frosty winter of 1941/42 created the conditions for the widespread use of airborne combat and transport equipment. The "hint" of the Russian winter was taken by our troops. And in January 1942, in many sectors of the fronts in the Moscow region, in the region of Staraya Russa, on the North-Western Front, the first aerosleigh units appeared. In off-road conditions, combat and transport battalions, equipped with the appropriate types of snowmobiles, received one of the main trump cards of the war - mobility and speed of movement. In the most unexpected places for the enemy, our units rapidly appeared and carried out successful combat operations. The enemy guarded the roads - snowmobiles appeared due to impenetrable snowdrifts. The effect of surprise, the transience of the battle behind enemy lines produced a stunning effect on the Nazis.

The RF-8 snowmobile was created by the Design Bureau of the People's Commissariat of River Fleet under the leadership of the chief designer M.V. Veselovsky on the instructions of the State Defense Committee of the USSR.
At the end of December 1941, the first batches of vehicles of the RF-8 type, which received the factory index GAZ-98, had already arrived at many sectors of the front. They were equipped with combat airsled battalions.
